Product Description
As with many developing countries, Ghana relies heavily on the extraction of its renewable natural resources such as forests, wildlife, soil and water to meet its economic growth and other social development objectives. As a result, the pressure on these natural systems is enormous and has led to serious resource degradation in many areas of the country. Through theoretical concepts, applied research and case studies, this book examines the biophysical, social and economic dimensions of renewable natural resources management in Ghana. ... Read more

Aimed at the general reader, this book attempts to document, as much as possible, the useful plant material from Ghana. The plants are divided by use into subjects such as food, fuel, potions and medicines, poisons, dyes, construction and weeds. They are listed by their scientific and Ghanian vernacular names as well as by their English names, if available. Product Description
Boundary studies in Ghana have focused primarily on the evolution and impact of the international boundaries, to the complete neglect of internal administrative divides. Filling the gap, this comprehensive study reconstructs the originating circumstances of the administrative regions of Ghana: the Gold Coast Colony, the Colony of Ashanti and the Protectorate of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast. It analyses the evolution and impact of the internal colonial and regional boundaries as barriers to the movement of people, goods, ideas and capital, and particularly the effects on the border populations. The five parts cover evolution and problems of the internal colonial boundaries 1874-1951; evolution and problems of the internal colonial boundaries 1951-1997; internal colonial boundaries and amalgamation; regionalism, federalism and the emergence of the Unitary State; and the problem of unity and the creation of regions. ... Product Description
This study of Nkrumah provides a compelling account of one of the most significant politicians in post-colonial Africa. Hadjor argues that although Nkrumah’s experiment failed, it continues to have relevance for Africa today. He also illustrates how certain mistakes were unavoidable during Nkrumah’s time. He writes of the clarity of Nkrumah’s vision, which helps to throw light on the problems many Africans face today. In this important way, Hadjor’s reworking of the essential themes of Nkrumah’s presidency contributes to the debate on the political future of Africa and promises to give focus to the recent revival of interest in Nkrumah.

From the Author’s Conclusion:

Nkrumah...always managed to stay ahead of his time. If anything, his greatest tragedy was the fact that he was so much ahead of those around him. Very few were able to follow the implications of Nkrumah’s perspective. Even those who were often inspired by his vision could not, on their own, follow on the right road.

Nkrumah’s legacy of thought retains its vitality precisely because it is the intellectual product of Africa’s historical experience. With Nkrumah, ideas point the way to action and develop further through action. It is this dialectic between ideas and action that made Nkrumah such a sensitive tribune of the people. He captured the mood and aspirations of his people and translated them into a universal message for Africa and for black people everywhere. That is why African Americans can so readily identify with the perspective outlined by him.

Nkrumah requires not adulation but consideration. All Africans owe a debt of gratitude to his liberating vision. The best way to repay the debt is for a new generation of Africans to learn for themselves the value of study and political education. Africans need not only to share his dream, but also to share his determination to build a new Africa. ... Read more

Description:
The sustainability of introduced technology in rural contexts is based on the socioenvironmental networking of local stakeholders, a point generally ignored in Ghana. A case study is given of an irrigation project from the coastal savanna of Ghana, a region appraised by contested assessments of drought and social conflict. Using a methodology based on a strand of actor network theory (ANT), including social surveys, meteorological and field data, it is concluded that such analyses of spatial linkages, serve as an effective methodology for assessing technological developments and socio-cultural contexts of various scales, and has applied relevance for environmental and development planning. ...
