Product Description
Information about shoreline evolution trend hasinfluenced coastal policy formulation and enableddevelopment of sustainable coastal managementpractices worldwide. Numerous studies have reportedvaried rates of change ranging between 1.5 and 15m/yr in Ghana's Accra shoreline, a data starvednation. This has resulted in the lack of effectiveand sustainable management of the coastal resources. The study reported in this book addresses thisissue using mapping data from 1904, 1974, 1996 and2002 to estimate shoreline recession in the Accraregion. Predictions for the next 250 yr were thenundertaken using a variety of modelling techniquesand accounting for uncertainties. The rate oferosion in the Accra region was found to be 1.13 m/yr (±0.17 m/yr). Subsequent predictions were used toidentify a series of significant economic, ecological and social features at risk, and toestimate when they will most likely be lost toerosion if left unprotected. The study illustratesthat it is possible to provide reliable statisticalinformation in support of sustainable coastalmanagement for developing countries in the face of achanging climate. ...
