Product Description
A trip through the history of glassmaking and the rediscovery of an ancient art form. This premier publication from the vast and variegated de Boos-Smith Collection offers a comprehensive and fascinating view of nineteenth-century Murano glass production, from filigree to millefiori, from aventurine to chalcedony. The different techniques highlighted allow a better understanding of how ancient works were revived by Venetian glassmakers after the deep crisis suffered by the glass industry after the fall of the Serenissima Republic. The 250 pieces come mainly from the English market of the period. They were bought by Fiorella and Phillip de Boos-Smith, Londoners of Australian background, and make up a collection that is emblematic of the typically nineteenth-century English taste for color, creativity, and technical expertise, at times taken to the verge of kitsch. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Glass Candlesticks
Very beautiful pictures, but limited.Wish Florence has used a different format instead of listing by color. It would have been helpful if he had stated the colors and etchings available for each candlestick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Candlesticks
This book is a very colorful and well written book. However, I expected to see many more pictures of candlesticks than are offered in this book. There is 165 pages of candlesticks with 2 - 3 examples per page, which isprobably around the amount made during the Depression Era.Florence givesthe company name, the pattern, color, size and mint value. The photos aregreat and I believe this book is valuable to those just getting intocollecting candlesticks from this era. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Book was adissapointment,
OK.. I admit I purchased this book simply based on the title. This was a mistake. The price was cheap enough and I was shipped it on time and it arrived in excellent condition. 2 stars for shipping, service and price via Amazon. As for the book itself, I was hoping to find some advanced projects and stained glass cutting and assembly technique information. The information seemed to me to be a bit dated and the project and examples used uninteresting. While the book did offer a few things beyond the basis, there was nothing here that would cause me to recommend it for someone looking beyond the basis.
A 3 stars rating hereis generous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Basic Stained Glass Book
This book is fantastic!I love the step by step pictures and the detailed instructions.I have purchased other stained glass making books but this is by far the best one. I look forward to making some of his projects because he makes it look so easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
Very nice layout, easy to follow instructions. Love the binding. Looking forward to the projects.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in stained glass.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition for your stained glass library
This is a very good book with outstanding photography and functional book binding. The basic skills reviewed are a bit redundant and don't advance the readers knowledge very far but it is a good review for beginner stained glass artists. The author should consider writing another book which assumes basic skill sets and focus on taking the reader further into advanced techniques and project design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jeff's review
The cover gives 14 color examples. The 78 pages are packed with
an average of 8 black and white outlines to a page.
This is a lot of ideas but would be challenging to enlarge for
pattern making. A limited range of symetric styles are divided
into four groups.

4-0 out of 5 stars Design by eras/styles
This book is not my cup of tea, but it's great for someone who's looking for a design from a certain era. The book is broken down by the different eras or styles: Victorian Geometric, Art Nouveau, Victorian Floral, Edwardian, and 1920's. All the designs have a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in them. Also, it's all in black and white so you have to use your imagination to color it. The back of the front cover and back cover has examples in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stained Glass Designs from Dover
This is an excellent resource book for stained glass artisans. It has a variety of styles and eras in easy to duplicate drawings.Projects range from easy to intricate, designs (in some instances) can be mixed and matched.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful because there's not much else out on this subject yet
It seems certain that many books will be published on the use of dichroics in just about all phases of the glass arts, but there isn't much in print yet. Unfortunately, this small book doesn't go very far in filling the void.

It does provide a fairly good background on how dichroic glass is made and the history of its use. And it does go into practical matters involving the use of dichro in various glass techniques.

However, the practical information is really pretty sketchy and in places is a bit vague and/or redundant.

In particular, those who like step-by-step projects may be disappointed. Such projects can be very helpful--not because they provide an easy recipe for a finished piece, but because they can further help the reader get a feel for what the medium is like. There are only two of these, neither of which is especially illustrative or inspiring.

Conclusion; this book is kind of expensive for what little it offers, but at the moment it's about the only show in town.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for ages 6 and up (including adults)
I bought this to expand my children's coloring skills past the coloring book stage. They fell in love with complex and not-so-complex pictures. I'd hear them debating between the two color choices for each picture and pouring over which picture to do next. It looked like fun, so one day when I needed to relax, I picked up the book and picked a picture. Before long I was coloring and forgetting all my cares in the world. Now I routinely pick one to color, too.

Product Description
Students and scholars of the Italian Renaissance easily fall under the spell of its achievements: its self-confident humanism, its groundbreaking scientific innovations, its ravishing artistic production. Yet many of the developments in Italian ceramics and glass were made possible by Italy's proximity to the Islamic world. The Arts of Fire underscores how central the Islamic influence was on this luxury art of the Italian Renaissance. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum on view from May 4 to August 5, 2004, The Arts of Fire demonstrates how many of the techniques of glass and ceramic production and ornamentation were first developed in the Islamic East between the eighth and twelfth centuries. These techniques - enamel and gilding on glass and tin-glaze and lustre on ceramics - produced brilliant and colourful decoration that was a source of awe and admiration, transforming these crafts, for the first time, into works of art and true luxury commodities. Essays by Catherine Hess, George Saliba, and Linda Komaroff demonstrate early modern Europe's debts to the Islamic world and help us better understand the interrelationships of cultures over time. ... Compiled and deftly edited by Catherine Hess (Associate Curator of Sculpture, Getty Museum), The Arts Of Fire: Islamic Influences On Glass And Ceramics Of The Italian Renaissance is informationally enhanced by the contributions of George Saliba (Professor of Arabic and Islamic Science, Columbia University) and Linda Komaroff (curator of Islamic Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Graced with a map, 61 color images and 17 b/w illustrations, The Arts Of Fire showcases luxury glass and ceramic objects made by Italian artists and craftsmen during the 15th and 16th centuries -- an era considered to be a high point in Renaissance art. What's less well known is that none of these wonderful creations would have been possible without the introduction of the technological and formal advances in the art and production of glass and ceramic ware imported into Italy from contacts within the Islamic East where they were originally developed and practiced. Also available in a hardcover edition (0892367571, $65.00), The Arts Of Fire is a superb and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic Art History reference collections, The Arts Of Fire is a joy to simply page through and will leave the reader wondering what other treasures the Getty Museum has within its collections. ... Product Description
Randy Kazandy, Where Are Your Glasses? was rated the best children's book for the fall through SheKnows magazine. The book is helping kids all around the nation adjust to eyeglasses in a fun and clever way. Randy's motto of loving himself is reflected into the minds of children as they read this musical rhyme over and over again. Randy doesn't like glasses but his mom is a detective and keeps her keen eye on her rambunctious child. Mom is like a rocket who takes off into action as Randy tries to ditch his specs at every turn. Mom is loaded and ready to fire by bringing out a new pair of glasses, then another pair, then another. Will she win this war with Randy? This is a must have book for everyone. The illustrations are vibrant and beautifully drawn by Kim Sponaugle, fun filled and packed with surprises. This book is very unpredictable with hidden glasses throughout the story for the detective in your child to find. This amazing children's book has a keepsake message that is "I love being me!" Won the Book of Excellence award through Creative Child's Magazine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Randy Kazandy Where Are Your Glasses is a groundbreaking book for children!
Randy Kazandy, Where Are Your Glasses is a great book for children, whether they might need glasses or not. The real lesson of the book, is that things that make you different aren't bad, just different. Randy doesn't want to wear his glasses at first, though he needs them badly. He thinks they make him look "like an alien from space." It's understood, though not stated, that he's afraid he'll be teased by the other children. Unlike any other book of it's kind, the book is written in lyrical rhyme, with perfect meter, something rarely if ever seen. It's also a high quality book, printed in the USA, that should last for a good while, even though the children that receive it tend to take it everywhere they go. It may even last so they can hand it down to their children, maybe even their grand children. The illustrations are brilliant, Kim Sponaugle did a wonderful job of getting the pictures just right. The author, Rhonda Fischer, is a brilliant, classically trained musician that has focused her considerable skills on writing children's books. One need only read the lyrical rhyme to know that there is music in the soul of the author, it shows that much in the way the words flow. The underlying theme of Randy Kazandy isn't that children should wear their glasses, it's that they should love who they are, even the things that make them different. Randy's motto becomes, "I love being me." Do have your children visit the Randy Kazandy website, ([...]) there are games to play there that ophthalmologists say are actually good for children's eyes, yet they're fun and entertaining. I highly recommend this book above most children's books, since there are few if any like it, done with the style and quality of this one. Hopefully, you'll agree that quality is still important. Get this book for your children or grand children, you won't be disappointed, and neither will they.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book for Children!
Randy Kazandy, Where Are Your Glasses? is a great book! It is written in rhymes, that are fun and easy for kids to follow. This is the story of a little boy, Randy Kazandy, who can't see very well, always misses the ball, bumps into things, and so on, until he goes to see Doctor Bee, the eye doctor. As it turns out, Randy needs glasses, but he does not want to wear them, he tries everything to get rid of his glasses. In the end, Randy decides that he likes to wear his glasses. This is a great story, especially for a child who has impared vision and needs to wear glasses. It shows kids that glasses can be fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons for little ones, told in the spirit of fun
As a schoolgirl who was given glasses at age 11 (and never wore them!) I was intrigued by my young sons' reaction to Randy Kazandy's vision challenges. My grade-schooler thought that Randy should have sunglasses for outdoors, with shark stickers on the side.He loved the artwork, especially the colorful children and animals. My pre-schooler loved Randy's playful side and his generosity in sharing his new glasses with the cute baby in the story. We all enjoyed playing "I spy the glasses" on each page spread.

I don't recall any of my children ever mentioning classmates or friends who wear glasses. It's nice that Randy Kazandy can introduce them to the concept of corrected vision with sensitivity, humor and playfulness.Poor eyesight runs rampant in my family.I wouldn't be surprised if one or all of my children will have to have corrected vision some day.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Smashing Book
Simply Marvelous indeed. Fun and enlightening with musical rhyme and hidden glasses throughout the story. Randy's motto: "I love being me is catching on," ... Read more

Product Description

This enticing new book brings the magical qualities of luminous, color-rich glass to a wider audience. In step-by-step detail, Gillian Hulse demonstrates how to layer and combine clear, dichroic, and textured fusing glass with inclusions such as bubble powder to create gorgeous flat and three-dimensional pieces.
Designs such as a dragonfly panel and passionflower coasters take their inspiration from the natural world, while a love of art and textiles is the foundation of other creations---both flat and slumped---such as the Klimt-inspired Vienna bowl.
A comprehensive techniques section, detailed photographs and instructions, and clear templates ensure that glass enthusiasts of all levels---including hobbyists with access to a kiln---can create spectacular results across a range of decorative items for the home, as well as exquisite jewelry items.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but...
This book was moderately informative and seemed aimed at advanced beginners.I did not find the projects appealing, but that is personal/artistic taste.

As a beginner to glass art, this book has been extremely helpful in giving me ideas and showing me how to execute beautiful pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kiln Formed Glass
This is a beautiful book with numerous projects for fusing and slumping glass, all of which are decorative and useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars simplistic but fun
Bought this book as well as a few more to learn about fusing.I have just started fusing after doing stained glass for 30 years. This book is a little simplistic and goes absolutely to the beginning of cutting glass and basic tool use. However I was soon charmed by the wonderful and simple patterns for fusing.Whimsical is a good word for it.Although someday I would like to produce something truly original and artistic, this is a great and fun place to start and just have fun with it while I hone my skills. Don't over think this book and it's a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass
I recently ordered from Amazon the book titled "Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass" which is in amazing condition and for a great price!!I have never been dissappointed with any purchase from Amazon. The book is a great reference for me since I own many different pieces of Depression Glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression Glass
As always, Florence has good information on collectible glass. New to this book are pictures with numbers so we can tell which piece is which, a very helpful addition. The pictures are very good with attention to detail on the patterns. His section on reproductions is also a very helpful portion, as there are many people out there who don't know how often this glass has been reproduced. I am sad that it's his last book, as I've had several of his editions on glassware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Gene and Kathy
Don't know how many past issues of Gene Florence's depression glass books I've got, but they are invaluable for the collector.I used to get the new edition every year, but now I just get one every 2 or 3 years.Depends on how far into your collections you are, or if you are selling.I've read books by other authors, but in my opinion, the Florence books are the most accurate and have the best photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Depression Glass Collectors!
