5-0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite as a little girl
I've always loved stained glass.I couldn't get enough of it.Stained glass design books were my favorite coloring books as a little girl (20ish years ago) and this particular book was my most favorite.Everything was beautiful and sweeping, and with the right markers, it all looked like jewels when held up to the light. It was a delightful surprise to find this on amazon just now. This kept me entranced and happy for hours, and if I recall correctly, the paper being of particularly good quality with little to no bleedthrough from the markers I used.

This is a sweet little coloring book. I gave away as a gift. I think I enjoyed it more than the giftee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous pictures and solid descriptions
This book has gorgeous pictures for the various projects and the descriptions are nicely broken up and detailed.I find it a great book to foster my creativity and jump start my projects.I think the author uses colored wire in a fun but elegant manner. The projects are more sophisticated that I am used to seeing with this medium.(My only disappointment was I was hoping for instructions in a tightly scrolled bead which the book does not provide.)However, I was happily surprised with the down-to-earth conversation about color combinations.Overall, a well-done book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!
This book is Totally Twisted! And I mean that in a very good way.

If you love art glass beads and are looking for fun and creative ways to incorporate them into your jewelry projects, this is the book for you.
You'll learn wire working techniques, coiling, finishing and everything in between.

The instructions are very easy to follow and the photographic illustrations are rich and colorful and beautiful. This is one jewelry making book I will never regret purchasing. It's so nice to get a jewelry book that lives up to my expectations where so many others fall short.

If you are a beginner or advanced jewelry maker, this book will give you lots of ideas and inspiration. Get this book, you will not regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, Well-Constructed Book on Jewelry Making
Totally Twisted is a beautifully conceived and executed book which details how to create wire jewelry incorporating lampworked beads. Obviously, there is a great deal of freedom in the materials that may be chosen to create the pieces, but it is wonderful to see what an artist selects and go from there. The designs are innovative and the clear instructions make them accessible to everyone.

I am not a jewelry artist, but rather someone who periodically makes jewelry. It is an interest I have returned to again and again. Through the years I have read numerous books on the subject of wire jewelry, but this one is quite distinctive. Clearly written and beautifully photographed, step- by-step the reader is guided through each project. Whether new to jewelry making or someone with experience, all will be able to create beautiful pieces.

The book starts out with an explanation of the craft, what tools and equipment are necessary, an inventory of the materials used in jewelry making and how to choose colors that work well together. A particularly useful section includes clear pictures and instructions detailing how to create clasps, earring hooks and other basics that give handmade pieces such a distinctive look. The back of the book includes a great list of suppliers (some of whom I use and know are good.)

The creations in the book revived my interest and I can't wait to start work. Some of the designs reflected in the twenty-four separate projects are ones I will replicate and some simply triggered my own ideas. This is a quality book and I would not hesitate to buy as a gift for anyone interested in jewelry making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Exuberant Wirework and Art Glass Design Book!

There are a lot of designers who use beads and wire to make pretty jewelry of all sorts. However, nobody does this fantastic style better than Kerry Bogert! She is the queen of a wonderfully well thought out sort of exuberance which will delight you from page one. Kerry Bogert's book, Totally Twisted, is intended specifically to show readers how to work with brightly colored wire, sterling silver wire and beautiful art glass beads to make the kinds of jewelry you buy in boutiques. Yes, you can do it yourself! It's a lot of fun, too, with her guidance. The book begins with an introduction and a reference to Connie Fox. I had to laugh when I saw that Kerry had gotten her start on her own unique path by initially learning from Connie's great online tutorial. I had done the same thing! Her path "diverged in the woods" at that point however, as she set out to blaze new trails with her coiling, wireworking, and her lovely lampworked beads. She is a true original. Everything she makes is irresistible. Get ready to be blown away by the energetic yet always clearly explained pages of this remarkable book. After an excellent and thorough beginning, which even includes a fascinatingly, slightly different type of way to understand the color wheel, the reader will be introduced to the brilliant, charming, well made projects.
There isn't one I wouldn't wear in a New York Minute. The projects often have alternate views, which are terrific as well. Several of the projects which delighted me were: the very first one, "bang gals!" with several alternative choices of how to make these wonderful bangles, as well as "taken for a whirl", a pair of totally wild, orange and red swirled earrings with accents of turquoise and lime, which make me want to go on a road trip to anywhere, showing these off in the breeze as I drive an open convertible. There is an amazing bracelet called "scrollirific", which does have an lovely elegance to it, as the author says, due to the manner in which she combines the S links she has used to connect the beads. I also fell for "hook line and sinker", a superspecial necklace using one wonderful focal, combined with a lot of coiling wire and many jump rings. I loved the bubbly view of the alternative choice on that one, in particular. I have to say it is really difficult for me to stop writing about this book. Beads and wire are two of my favorite things in the jewelry world. I believe that if they haven't been yours as yet, try Kerry Bogert's amazing offering: Totally Twisted Innovative Wirework & Art Glass Jewelry. You will be jumping out of your seat with excitement at the way the author teaches her delightful manner of jewelry design. I was also impressed by her friends who participated by creating some of the beads. They are some of my favorite bead makers. I guarantee that if you are looking for fun, something different and special, as well as consistent high quality in your jewelry designs, Totally Twisted has your name on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
The projects in this book are very well writen and illustrated. It gives some great ideas for incorporating beads for various types of earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. Best wire/book purchase to date. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description

“Paint should not be applied thick,” James McNeill Whistler once famously stated. “It should be like breath on the surface of a pane of glass.” Through an innovative manner of handling paint, a group of American artists around 1900 created deceptively simple canvases that convey images of shimmering transience, visions suggested rather than delineated. Focusing on this singular aesthetic characteristic—softness—Like Breath on Glass explores this painterly phenomenon through works by fifteen important artists, including Whistler, George Inness, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, John Twachtman, and Edward Steichen.

Leading scholars in American art consider a wide variety of topics: the very different motives—technical, social, religious, and scientific—that prompted these artists in their experimentation; their materials; their techniques for creating the appearance of effortlessness; period notions of “the vague” through art and writing; and the revival of "painting softly" in the 1950s and 1960s. This beautifully produced and lavishly illustrated catalogue highlights a surprisingly understudied yet important aspect of American cultural and painterly achievement.

5-0 out of 5 stars stunning
The often ignored "Tonalist" movement finally gets its due in this exquisite catalogue of what must be a remarkable exhibition. The reproductions are beautifully controlled (thank goodness for modern printing technology) and broadly selected. There are a few nice surprises (Crane, Steichen!!, and Carlsen stand out), along with the expected Whistler, Twachtman, and Inness. The inclusion of a section on American lyrical abstraction was also a nice linkage. For any serious collector of art books this tome is an essential. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book........
I was glad I only paid a few dollars for this book because it's not very good. It has picutes of beads and a bioraphy of the artists that made them but has no instructions or "techniques" on how they were made. It had instructions on how to string jewelry with the beads but nothing on how to make them. Very dissapointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Soul of Glass Beads
This is a great book.Interviews with the artists and description of techniques used for each project.Very creative

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE
I too wish I had read past the first reviewer. Must have been a born optimist!! The best thing about this book, THE PRICE. What a total waste of my time. I learned stringing beads as a toddler! I was looking for a GLASS BEAD BOOK and how to MAKE THEM. Why not put this book with the stringers! Shame on you Amazon for leading us down the wrong path. No wonder this book did not have pictures of the inside. shame shame shame!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading Title
I should have read the other reviews first. If you are looking for a book to outline and explain the technique of glass bead making, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!!!!Only buy this if you want some pictures of beads or are interested in making jewerely.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title!
While I do believe that this book has merit, it is as a JEWELRY MAKING BOOK, not as a bead making book. I feel that the Title of the book is misleading.....to me, a "Bead Artist" is a person who MAKES beads, not a person who makes jewelry with beads. That is a "JEWELRY ARTIST". A small point, but significant, since this book is listed under "Lampwork". Nice photographs, and as I said, the book has merit if you are looking for some VERY SIMPLE stringing ideas. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars creative glass techniques
vendor shipped on time and item was as stated, good vendor will buy again.

As far as the book, was somewhat disappointed that many of the projects required you to purchase glass items (campaign glasses, vases) that are already made and you just slump and paint. As an experienced glass artist, I wanted to know how she made the items she just decorated. The cover piece, requires that you first purchase the glass vase, good luck in finding the piece. I would put this under "crafts". There are several kiln projects however, if you haven't ever bought a book on fusing. The few pages devoted to lampwork will not get you there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Glass Techniques: Fusing, Painting, Lampwork
This is one of the best glass fusing books I've purchased. The projects are very beautiful and easy to create.I give it 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and delightful
I have to admit that, despite a few flaws, this remains one of my favorite books on making your own glass. Ms. Eberle has written a book that gets my creative juices flowing every time I read it. Her approach to creating functional/decorative glass is (or was at the time) unique, and I especially appreciate her use of mass-produced glassware to create some really beautiful things. It's well-illustrated.

That said, there are some frustrating aspects to this book. She doesn't really explain where to find some of the materials she uses, such as her "paints" and "crystal ice." While I can guess at their identity I can't be quite sure. I've also tried to locate the author (and in fact have sent several e-mails to what I *think* is the correct address) with no luck. She does describe the mechanics of full-fuse firing, but you'll need a pretty good understanding of firing schedules to fill in the blanks.

Even with the frustrations, though, this book is well worth the purchase price. I would love to see more from this author!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fusing book
I have been fusing for 3 years now.I started with this book and still look back and get good ideas. You evolve and still can get something on a different level.Buy it.

Product Description
In this first full-length study of a largely forgotten optical device from the eighteenth century, Arnaud Maillet reconfigures our historical understanding of visual experience and meaning in relation to notions of opacity, transparency, and imagination. Many are familiar with the Claude glass as a small black convex mirror used by artists and spectators of landscape to reflect a view and make tonal values and areas of light and shade visible. In a groundbreaking account, Maillet goes well beyond this particular function of the glass and situates it within a richer archaeology of Western thought, exploring the uncertainties and anxieties about mirrors, reflections, and their potential distortions. He takes us from the magical and occult background of the "black mirror," through a full evaluation of its importance in the age of the picturesque, to its persistence in a range of technological and representational practices, including photography, film, and contemporary art. The Claude Glass is a lasting contribution to the history of Western visual culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars Through A Glass Darkly
Arnaud Maillet's study of the Claude Glass was informative and insightful in the main. As an artist and geometer I found all of the information contained in the book of great interest and instructive. As one who has of late been studying the subject of reflections and mirrors in general, as well as applications to the nuero-visual and geometric, this filled an improtant gap in my knowledge. It may not be a perfectly organized study but it is the only one I am aware of in English. It had the effect of my creating my own Claude Glass with a converse clock face glass cover and enamel black paint sprayed on the back. I have been enjoying experimentation with it since and will no doubt employ it in some art work. Any book that prompts one to use the information inside is a book worthy of reading I think. It seemed to cover the various areas of the subject; It's developement and history, occult use for scrying, as a device for reducing an image and also for
accessing the tonal values. I doubt I would require another book on the subject after reading and studying this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is quite rediculous

The "Claude Glass" sounds like a very interesting topic, but the handling of this topic by the author A. Maillet is out of the limits of professional academic research. The very short chapters filled with heterogeneous thesis and arbitrary pictures and diagrams evade a clear art-historian or philosophical approach of the Claude Glasse's use for artists in the 18th century. The first interesting thesis, that you expect normally in the introduction, is presented on page 163 (of 221 pages main-Text): "The Claude Mirror... is... an apparatus that enables one to transpose reality into a melodious harmony." In the internet you find articles that give you more insight for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
What's not to like? The pictures are beautiful and the information is good. Prices are accurate too.One of the few items in my short history of collecting glass that I've found actually can be bought and sold for the prices listed. My only complaint is that a number of times they picture the same item twice. We love pictures, surely there were enough items available that pictures didn't have to be repeated.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive encyclopedia and outstanding reference!
Author Kenneth M. Wilson passed away before publication of his opus MT. WASHINGTON & PAIRPOINT GLASS - but he reviewed and approved the page proofs and had written two chapters of the projected second volume (which will be prepared in future using his research materials and illustrations), so nothing lacks in MT. WASHINGTON except the author's ability to enjoy his finished product. The Mt. Washington Glass Works and the companies after it make up America's second-oldest glass manufacturer: the factory opened for business in the mid-1800s and spun off another business in silver plating. Glass collectors will find MT. WASHINGTON & PAIRPORT GLASS the definitive encyclopedia of the manufacturer's works: the volume has been long awaited by collectors and provides an extensive company history to compliment an in-depth coverage of its many products. Chapters come packed with black and white and color illustrations and photos, providing descriptions and color illustrations of all glasses and silver-plated wares and reviewing design, craftsmanship and unique attributes. Add indexes of patents and trademarks, glass decorators who operated in the region from 1867 to 1902, and illustrations of ads, production records and more and you have a truly outstanding reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW-You Will Not Believe This Book-Beautiful!!
We have waited a very long time for a comprehensive book on this beautiful American art glass and Betty Sisk has provided us with a treat for the eyes! The photos are beautiful in full color and plentiful. I did not know that such examples of this artform existed until feasting on this book. All collectors of art glass must add this to their libraries. The information with each type of glass is insightful and just enough to ready the reader for the pictures to follow. The insight provided is both scholarly and from a collector's perspective. Prices are given in a fair range to give a fair market value. And what pictures there are to enjoy! Many glass types are well covered for the first time. This book will set a very high standard by which all other references on this glass will be judged in the years to come. We indeed owe the author a debt due to this subject's neglect until now. This is a must buy! We have waited a long time to get this book-thanks Betty!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
This book was above and beyond what I expected. I am very pleased with the quality of the designs, the paper. I couldn't be more pleased.

2-0 out of 5 stars lots of geometrical shapes
Many of the designs are just geometricals and those with characters are a little bit simple shaped. I defenetly prefer the book of sun signs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you like vellum
The designs in this one are fabulous. It's just too bad I only got to color one of them before my cat knocked over my drink and spilled Pepsi all over it, ruining the entire book.Even vellum can't stand up to liquids...lol.

I will be ordering another, eventually.

If you love art deco, this is definitely for you.

I do stained glass designs not as window ornaments, but to hang on walls.I color them with markers, then affix a bright colored sheet of paper to one side, matte, and frame.

5-0 out of 5 stars adult coloring book
this book is fantastic! Once you start on a picture you cant put it down until its finished. you come up with what color goes where to create the best picture and hang in a sunny window to show it off. really does look like stained glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a trip to Radio City Music Hall!
Combine your love for nostalgia, art, and relaxation so wonderful it'll lower your blood pressure with Art Deco Designs Stained Glass Coloring Book. This is another amazing winner from Dover Pictoral Archive Series, and if you are a fan of Art Deco, you MUST have this book.

Copy the PAGES, and you'll be in heaven working and re-working these pages, incorporating them into other crafts projects you dream up!

Product Description

The cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, France, is most famous as a failure--its choir vaults came crashing down in 1284--and only secondarily for its soaring beauty. This lavishly illustrated and elegantly written book represents the first serious look at the stunning collection of Gothic stained glass windows that has always dominated the experience of those who enter Beauvais Cathedral.

Chapter by chapter, Michael Cothren traces the glazing through four successive campaigns that bridged the century between the 1240s and the 1340s. The reader is transported back in history, gaining fascinating insight into what the glazing of Beauvais actually would have looked like as well as what it would have communicated to those who frequented the cathedral. Contrary to the widespread assumption that these windows are heavily restored, Cothren shows that they are in fact surprisingly well preserved, especially in light of the cathedral's infamous history of architectural disaster.

More importantly, Cothren goes far to dismantle a long-held misconception about medieval painted windows, and indeed monumental medieval pictorial art in general: the notion that it was conceived and produced as a substitute text for ignorant, illiterate folks, providing for them a "Bible of the Poor." Indeed, Cothren shows us that stained glass windows, rich with shaded meanings, functioned more like sermon than scripture. As an ensemble, they created a radiant interpretive backdrop that explicated and situated the performance of the Mass in this giant liturgical theater.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound, beautiful and erudite book
PICTURING THE CELESTIAL CITY is an astonishingly beautiful book: majestic in plan, magisterial in execution. Perhaps the most profound work on stained glass anywhere in the English language, every word choice has been carefully weighed. Attentive to detail without inundating the reader in a rain of leaden statistics, dates and archival information that can be so deadly in current art historical trends, instead this book is a revelation of the age that built Beauvais and the era and faith that rebuilt it after the collapse of the highest Gothic choir in 1284. Each stained glass window is annotated in full color with oldest to latest restorations shown precisely in place, each window's historical and thematic context presented, plus historical photos show Beauvais before and after devastating world wars. Two of my favorite crafted sections are Cothren's wry tale of the Theophilus Window cycle about this anecdotal Faustian bishop who made a pact with a devil only to later repent (pp. 71-96) and Cothren's fine sleuthing of noble 14th century cathedral window sponsor Bishop Jean de Marigny (pp. 155-159 & ff) whose subtle religious symbolism survive in the sublime windows created for him. Biblical passages amply illustrate the divine Celestial City's visions of light and hope. A must for stained glass studies and clearly a labor of love that took many scribal years, this lavish book sets the highest standard, for which the publisher Princeton must be gratified. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE - This book is physically tiny
I obviously did not have read the reviews close enough. This is
a tiny book with pictures so small that it's useless to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wright+glass=beauty
"Frank Lloyd Wright's Glass Designs," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" devoted to the work of one of the world's greatest architects. This volume, which explores Wright's interest in glass, contains many praiseworthy features: Lind's concise yet informative text, a wealth of stunning full-color photographs, fascinating sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a useful bibliography for further reading.

The plentiful photographs truly capture the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright. We can see his bold work with colored glass and geometric patterns in windows of many different shapes and sizes. It's marvelous to see how each glass creation complements the larger architectural space of which it is a part.

Houses represented in the book include the Darwin Martin house, the Schaberg house, the Roberts house, and many more. But my favorite photograph is a breathtaking two-page spread of the second Jacobs house. If you love Wright, if you love glass, or if you love the art of home design, you will certainly love this excellent little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in small packages
I ordered this book to get glass design ideas for my new house. It's tiny but worth its weight in gold. Sharp photographs (32/57 pp.) and minimal description provide just what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars How I learned to cut stained glass
I purchased this book only to learn how to cut stained glass. The book was easy to read and had plain and simple examples of how to cut stained glass. I was trying to do a stepping stone and didn't need to know anything else about working with stained glass. However, I will say that browsing through the rest of the book that I believe the book would be helpful if I had wanted to learn more aspects of working with stained glass. I like how the book is spiral bound so that I was able to set it open next to the project I was working on. All the pictures were very clear in showing you exactly what to do next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Book and Rfresher for Those Coming Back
I haven't done stained glass in years and years. I decided to do a quick refresher and to make sure my skills and supplies were current. This book was perfect and assured me of exactly the tools i need to replace or keep.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Copying Permission
Although the content of this book is clearly written and comprehensive, imagine my chagrin when I visited my local copy store and was refused service when I requested that the lesson pattern pages be copied. Directions for enlargement and type of paper to be used were printed right on the pages, but permissions were not secured to allow purchasers to use the patterns pages (which are intregal to the lessons) without getting permission from the publisher. Ridiculous!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what it seems
The stained glass images are great, but the cheesy "You can do it, Christian Soldier!" quotes on every other page are a real drag. These images speak for themselves, and the ill-conceived joining of them with motivational quotes, a tasteless re-packaging, steal the majesty of the stained glass itself. Also, a number of the pieces the authors chose to display are modern stained glass pieces, and I don't give a damn about modern stained glass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light=Love
This is book for those moments of quite contemplation. When the world seems chaotic and despair seems to be the order of the day, and there seems to be no remedy, this book will provide you with joy.As you reflect upon the quotes from the people of diverse time periods and backgrounds you will see the common thread throughout history;faith , hope and light. Each page has a beautiful stained glass window from some house of worship, museum or private collection from various corners of the world. The colorful illuminations are magnificent and date from early Christendom to contemporaryart all reproduced in exquisite detail. On the opposite page are quotationsin big bold letters. The sayings are thought provoking, concise reflections on our purpose on this planet and our relationship to the seen and unseen. The themes are organized around the title of the book with the exception of love replacinglight. The art work from the stained glass windows is only half the treasure of this book as the sayings are at times profound. Some of the simple examples from the bookare as follows: from Love; "Love in its essence is spiritual fire," Emmanuel Swedenborg(1868-1772), from Hope; " Laugh and grow strong," St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556), from Faith ; "People see God every day, they just don't recognize him " Pearl Baily (1918-1990). These are some of the shortest quotesand very typical of the diversity . The sayings come from the unknown and known figures of time. I would recommend this book to you , to share with a family member, to give as a gift for a special person in your life, to spread the interchangeable terms of light and love. This is a good book to have near and read often, to look at the wisdom and common thread that binds all mankind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The light fantastic
This book made my heart leap with the beautiful juxtaposition of inspirational quotes and breathtakingly lovely stained glass windows. The art print colors are vibrantly rich and glowing. The windows and text span a broad historical and geographical range. They include windows from diverse places and times; 13th century French and English cathedrals, modern works by Marc Chagall, and windows from 20th century cathedrals in South America. The quotes are equally broad from Louis L'Amour to Leo Tolstoy; St.Francis of Assisi to Pearl Bailey. The text creatively intertwines with the art work to stop and make you marvel and wonder. This book is a perfect aid to meditation It warms the soul and spirit,it makes you contemplate and wonder and ultimaltely give thanks. It is a hope renewer in both art and faith and their wonderful ongoing connection. ... Read more

This lavishly illustrated book devotes itself to Wright's formidable contribution to the medium and features a number of powerful two-dimensional graphic designs and a number of three-dimensional units. Stained glass in the USA as well as the technical aspects of glass making are discussed. The majority of his work in glass was concentrated into the first decade of the 20th century when Wright abandoned old-fashioned stained glass windows and began experimenting with light screens of concrete developing into wood fretwork and glass block and tubing. ...
