Product Description

Kiln-forming as a technique to shape glass was in use for centuries before the Romans developed glassblowing, which has since become the more widely used method. Today, modern glass artists are rediscovering the versatility of kiln forming and are using the technique to produce works of great beauty and strength. In this book, Keith Cummings reviews the history of kiln forming and discusses pertinent materials and methods, such as slumping and fusing. The work of an international group of artists is used to illustrate the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview on kilnforming
I've got both this and the previous edition of Cumming's book in my collection. The author has plenty of hands-on experience and a broad knowledge of many glass techniques and processes. I wouldn't call this a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial in studio technique but it will certainly get you started. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You!
I have a selection of instructional books on Warm Glass techniques, but I found this one very clear and precise. It was easy to follow and I enjoyed working with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good eye candy with tech stuff too!
friend likes eye candy to motivate but needs technical info to actually make pieces and we got that. Thanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, poor translation
This book is a great source of information. Comprehensive, thoroughly illustrated and graphically appealing. It is a shame the translation is a poor job. I am a translator and a potter and I am new to craft glass. I'm sure I'll use this book a lot, but I really wish it hadn't been translated from Spanish, because the English rendition is definitely not good.

3-0 out of 5 stars warm glass
Purchased this book basically because of the title (fusing), but there really isn't alot of information about fusing and slumping.Good background on glass though.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Glass Fusing Bible!!!
My friend Andy works for a local stained glass studio and teaches classes at BYU. I enjoy talking to him about stained glass and he is full of really good advice about kiln fired glass. Recently he recommended Warm Glass to me. I got it and I love it.

This volume is full of examples of work which has been created in a kiln, but it's much more, it's like a classroom in a book, a primer on what went right and what went wrong. It is by far the best book I've seen to learn about kiln fired glass.

You really need to get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of nice floral projects
This book has lots of doable projects. I would classify the skill levelas beginner to intermediate, but be prepared to come up with you own colorschemes because there are no photographs of completed projects.

About 95%of the patterns have floral themes: lots of tulips, roses, lilies and othergeneric flowers. There are also a few pattern with women's profiles, twopeacocks, a fish, and a very impressive butterfly pattern (I have seen thisone for sale at the auction sites several times). All-in-all this bookwould be a nice addition to your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art Nouveau Stained Glass Pattern Book
This is a great book..as long as you have a good grasp of the relevant colors and at least a little experience with the whole painting on glass idea. The patterns are wonderful and very reminescent of a lot of thefabulous work seen in the art deco period hotel windows and in oldertiffany glass. There are some wonderful projects even for more or lessbeginners, although I would not class these projects as"starterprojects". But heck its only paint and glass basically so if you makea mess...start over! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is an excellent example for the beginning glass bead maker. It demonstrates then shows examples of each procedure the author describes. As a beginner, bead making can be intimidating. This book breaks the steps down in layman terms to demystify the process. I loved the bead examples from other artists at the end of the book. The step by step photography are clear and straight forward.I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This book is not for beginners or novice lampworkers. The instructions are fairly clear, pictures are good.In order to make the beads represented, you need to have a fully equipped studio and other fairly expensive equipment like a sandblaster. The book is for the more experienced and serious lampworker, not the occasional hobbyist.

With glass paint, almost any glass surface can glow with the look of stained glass. Turn a window into a work of art with a painted glass border, or hang painted glass in a window for a festive holiday or party mood.
Amazon.com Review
Real stained glass is glorious--and terribly expensive. (Yes, you can construct your own, but it requires advanced cutting and soldering techniques, not to mention costly materials.) With translucent glass paint, however, a simulated stained-glass look is now possible, and the effect is a pretty decent imitation of the real thing. Plaid's "Gallery Glass" is the industry leader and is available at almost any craft store for minimal investment. By tracing pattern outlines with simulated liquid leading and filling in the design with some of the 24 window colors, anyone can give their windows, glass doors, and home accessories the appearance of stained glass. Plaid's own book on the subject offers good directions and photos and complete patterns. Though the smaller items (suncatchers, night lights, candlestands) tend toward the cutesy, the large-scale window designs are often restrained and sophisticated. Some practice is required to achieve a professional look, but the basic methods are quite easily learned. --Amy Handy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How I learned to cut stained glass
I purchased this book only to learn how to cut stained glass. The book was easy to read and had plain and simple examples of how to cut stained glass. I was trying to do a stepping stone and didn't need to know anything else about working with stained glass. However, I will say that browsing through the rest of the book that I believe the book would be helpful if I had wanted to learn more aspects of working with stained glass. I like how the book is spiral bound so that I was able to set it open next to the project I was working on. All the pictures were very clear in showing you exactly what to do next.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Is Nice, But Not Realism...
This is a nice book, but I don't think the title matches the contents. Though the Artist has rendered some nice pieces, and shows decent step-by-steps, the art work doesn't look real. There is an Artist Alyona Nickelson who does realism with colored pencils. Her work looks real, the work in this book in most cases is just alright, some really nice, but none realistic. I was looking for a book that would assist me in rendering lifelike colored pencil art. This book, isn't it. The price is also too much for what is given. If you want true realism, check this book out! Colored Pencil Painting Bible: Techniques for Achieving Luminous Color and Ultra-Realistic Effects

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding guide through the major steps in realistic colored pencil drawing
About a month ago, as an absolute beginner, I started reading the classic Betty Edward's "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and working with the associated workbook - my goal was to eventually work with colored pencils and I was most intrigued by realistic colored pencil drawing. After a couple of weeks of drawing practice,I decided to not delay the colored pencil experience but to at least try the first demonstrations in Veronica Winter's "Master Realist Techniques in Colored Pencil Painting in 4 Weeks".From the first page I was hooked -- I was immediately engaged and knew I was being lead by a very talented artist and teacher. This book is very well written with clear demonstrations that I as a beginner found easy to follow. The subjects of the demonstrations are interesting and beautiful. The demonstrations are teaching me how to see with an artist's eye and how to handle the pencils with an artist's hand, laying a solid foundation upon which to evolve my drawing. I am having so much fun and my results are inspiring friends and family to explore art themselves.I look forward to each new demonstration and enjoy the time I spend drawing.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other beginners and I would expect that more advanced artists would find it very valuable as well.
