Family History
I bought this book for my husband; the Tuthills are one branch of his ancestry.My husband, Carl Barnhart's comments follow.

Fred and Sue Tuthill are my great-aunt and great-uncle. While my family still has many pieces of Tuthill glass in the family, we had only fragments of the story behind it.I bought this book to fill in the story, but found so much more: a story that is very well written and that makes vividly real the lives of the Tuthill family and the lifestyles of the times.It creates a full contextual tapestry for the details of the rich cut glass industry and Charles Tuthill's life and achievements.It starts pre-telephone, pre-automobile, (even pre-golf,) and at a time and in an industry that was still apprenticeship driven.It follows and illustrates Charles's passion for and education in the mastery of both cut and engraved glass, but also how life and business and society changed with the introduction and rapid acceptance of the telephone and automobile, and how the very nature of some businesses changed with the introduction of the unions.It even follows the lengths men will go to to get a golf course!It was a time of great change, told through the lives of a real family.Excellent scholarship and delightful, easy reading.

While this book is an invaluable source for filling in the blanks in my family history, it should be equally invaluable to anyone interested in or collecting American rich cut glass, or even just interested in life in late 19th and early 20th century America.

Charles Tuthill: An American Artisan-Entrepreneur
An enthralling chronical of the career of a remarkable man, Charles Tuthill, founder of Tuthill Cut Glass of Middletown, New York, and his family. Beginning as an apprentice at T. G. Hawkes & Company in 1887, Tuthill went on to become both a master glass cutter and a master engraver. He rose to foreman at Hawkes by the time he was 24 years old, resigning in 1895 to set up his own glass-cutting shop in his father's carraige house in Corning. From there he moved to Middletown where he was joined in the business by his sister-in-law, who served as general manager, and his brother. Well known for its original designs combining engraved fruits and flowers with geometric cutting, the Company prospered and, in 1915, was awarded a gold medal for its display at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

Written in the you-are-there style of the "new journalism," the book is a lively read. Drawing heavily on interviews with Tuthill family members, it fills a large gap in our knowledge of the cut glass industry. Cut glass collectors will recognize the names of the players in this unique American success story and get to know them better through the many anecdotes offered by author Maurice Crofford. The book should appeal also to those interested in American business history, in general, and the unique period around the turn of the 20th century when brilliant cut glass decorated the tables of the rich and famous. Great overview
This is a great book that covers all of the basics about usingnon kiln fired glass paints.A must read book for the hobbiest and a good place to start fot those serious about adding color to their clear glass art.

Glass painter's must have
Yes for anyone who does glass painting, especially faux stained glass, this is a MUST HAVE for glass painting reference libraries. This is the only cfraft I do and I was amazed at the number of things I learned from these guys. Also the problems I've had in the past were resolved in such a way that went away thinking "Why didn't I think of that?"...because I didn't have this book! I'm on the hunt for more from these same artists/authors.

Since I am a beginner to glass painting and have one book on the subject I was looking for something more comprehensive that covered other techniques.After reading the review and previewing from amazon's "look inside", I had to buy the book."The Complete Guide to Glass Painting, is just what it says, it is a good start for beginners and and provides lots of projects, techniques and motifts for the more advanced glass painter.There are so many techniques I never though of that was not covered in my one glass book.When the book first arrived in the mail, I glanced through it quickly; now I am reading the book word for word so as not to miss a great tip.Each page is well designed and layed out for easy reading and understanding with visual direction.You can't go wrong.For those who have more knowedge, this book has 400 motifs to use or combine to create fantastic glass paintings and projects that spark ideas.If you must have a glass painting book, this will be the only one you will need.Allan and Barry, thanks for sharing your 20 years of experience, this is a great book.If the authors ever collaborated to produce anther book; I will be looking out for more of them.

Excellent book for beginner to intermediate
If you just are getting one book about glass painting to try the hobby out then this is a good choice.It has a good overview of the materials available, step by step instructions for different techniques and templates to trace over (glass is perfect for tracing ;-) so you can get started on some small projects.The color pictures are plentiful and pretty, and the price is not too high as one might expect with color pics.Even if you are just into crafts and later find that glass painting isn't your thing the templates and pics can carry over into other crafts.

This is a good book if you know you want to try glass painting out.

DISAPPONTED!
Cost for shipping does not match the time for delivery for one. Secondly, no color choices exists except on covers. Thirdly, patterns are very small. Fourthly, you would have to be a professional with tons of equipment/resources to accomplish any completed project. All patterns require technical resizing. 99% of patterns too complex for the novice or intermediate hobbyist.

Author is a Murderer
I just returned from Joel Wallach's parole hearing.He has been in prison for 26 years for killing my father over the prints used in this book.The police never recovered the prints that my father sent to Wallach's wife.Wallach went on to have the book published while he was in prison.I view any money collected from the sale of this book as blood money.PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!You can verify this information through the San Diego District Attorney's office.I also hold the publisher morally responsible, too.I'm sure they are aware of the circumstances.

Excellent pattern book
I have this book and have referred to it many times and have used several of the patterns.There is a nice variety and the patterns cover a broad collection of interests and tastes.Excellent book and a must have in the stained glass studio.

Fascinating Introduction

A well illustrated history of this rare art
This book covers the almost lost art of point engraving on glass. The history is quite thorough, from the Romans to the Renaisance, to modern times. The photographs of point engraved glass are just incredible (as apoint engraver myself, it's an extremely hard subject to photograph well).The author has included photographs of his own work, which do not dominatethe book, but rather serve to illustrate that this a subject of which Mr.Whistler has great personal mastery. The bowl on page 63 isincredible.

Good basic instruction -- best for lamps
After I began taking a stained glass class, I ran to the library and the bookstore. My instructor is good, but he's only one opinion. I must have looked at a dozen books -- but this one didn't quite make the cut. I might pick it up in the future, but it isn't in my must-have pile.

Like many such books, there are three sections: basic techiques, projects, and a gallery that shows what you can do (but offers no instruction -- just an ooh-ahh opportunity).

The weak part here is the basics. There's nothing wrong with them, but other books have a lot more meat here.

On the other hand, this book is superb at some tasks that get short shrift elsewhere. There are ten pages of instructions for making a Tiffany lamp, including 23 photos that illustrate the steps. I'm just in the process of learning how to do this, in my hands-on class, and this book is giving me a good idea of what's involved.

However, Stained Glass Crafting -- which also has a short intro to glass fusing -- has very few projects. It's more of an extended "here's what you can do with stained glass" overview than an illustrated instruction.

It's a nice book, but it shouldn't be the only one on your shelf.

Nice variety of projects
I enjoyed this book for the variety of projects included.Some of the tools and techniques appear to be those used in someplace other than theU.S.It is listed in the catalog as a hardcover book, but I have seen itin softcover at a local chain bookstore (after I had already paid hardcoverprice.)It is one I refer to fairly often.A good book, but probably notthe absolute best for an inexperienced first-timer.For that, I recommendStained Glass Basics.

Just an OK to sub par book for glass painting
Just beginning glass painting and swayed by the previous glowing reviews, I purchased a copy of "The Glass Painting Book" by Jane Dunsterville.Also, the photo of the gorgeous painted mirror on the back cover certainly helped!I will say that I am VERY disappointed as the book didn't meet my expections.

Since this book is geared towards "the first-time glass painter", I anticipated some discussion about different kinds of glass paints, different techniques, ideas, etc.The book only glosses over these introductory subjects.

For example, in her "Materials and Equipment" section, she discusses different kinds of glass paints.Some paints need baking and some are air drying only, or that some are more translucent than others.This is all fine and good, but I want to know what types and brands of paint are currently on the market, what are the benefits of using one kind over another, how many looks can I achieve (like stained glass), etc.There is a supplier index in the back, and it may be useful to those people residing in the UK, but there is only ONE supplier listed for the US.And I didn't realize QVC was a major supplier of glass paints to the US!NOT!

Introductory paint projects should be written as scientific experiments:very detailed and easy to replicate.This is not the author's approach.She doesn't even tell you the color paints needed or how to replicate the "look" of the project.For the painted mirror project (as pictured on the back cover) she states a GENERAL list of materials (mirror, your design, glass paints, etc).There is NO instruction on technique in the project steps!They are trivial ... clean mirror, transfer design, paint over black outline, etc.I suppose the author relies soley on the 1-2 pages in which she discusses techniques in the beginning of the book.But how some of the projects looks are achieved remain a mystery as many of the "techniques" discussed should not be categorized as such.Cleaning the glass and paint smudges are not painting "techniques".The author gives artistic license to the new student prematurely by advising to "experiment" which actually disguises the lack of teaching direction from the author.

On the upside, the book has beautiful pictures of the projects and useful design stencils.

Overall, I do not recommend this book.I was very disappointed especially given the previous reviews.I have learned more about beginning glass painting on my own than through this book.

The Glass Painting Book
I was so struck by the beauty and vivid colors of the projects in this book that I just had to buy it. The picture lanterns on page 30 are ofinterest to me for they require no special glass, just old jars and suchthat we all have around, or can find at flea markets for little cost and weactually recycle and make them beautiful by painting. I also love herkindly faces of the Sun & Moon........just beautiful. Her techniquesare clear and easy to follow.The book is just so EXCITING!

Just what I was looking for!!
When looking for a glass painting book, I was after a book that not onlyshowed me how to create the effect I am looking for, but to also give meidea's on what I want to paint.This book has it all.Technique, colouras well as design ideas. Brilliant!!

This book helped me a lot
I am glad I found this one. I recommend to all. I have not been doing this for long, and yet it still assisted me in getting into all facets.

Great book!
I am new to stained glass.This book is one of the most helpful, well written, easy to understand books that I've read to far.The author explains not only the steps to doing something, but why you're doing it.Great pictures to go with the instructions.

One of The Best Self Teaching Books for Stained Glass!
This is an excellent teaching/design book for the neophyte and intermediate stained glass worker. An outstanding feature is the above average quantity of color pictures throughout that will make it a pleasure as well for anyone who simply wants to enjoy the beauty of stained glass without going through the large group class experience. The book opens with descriptions and examples of various types of glass. The tool chapter demonstrates the basic tools needed and variations of them. Workspace setup and safety cautions are discussed with an illustrated design for a bench with glass storage. Next are true step by step sequential visual aids with 'build-along' patterns. The beginner will not be afraid to learn to cut glass as Daley goes through the process with step by step photos, the proper methods of handling, scoring and breaking glass. This is the same successful exercise she has taught for over 20 years to her beginning students.Pattern design is discussed with advice on choosing the glass for your project. Detailed information on lead came and copper foil construction follows with techniques for reinforcing the work. Stressed throughout is hands on experience. Daley has included the patterns for 'build-along' sessions for the lead came Fleur d'Lys, copper foil (demonstrating double glazing) Butterfly panel, and a stained glass box. Good source of information
I found this book to be very informative on engraving. I found the patterns to be useful, also. They are copyrighted, but you are allowed to use them to make products to sell or for personal use, just not to sell the actual patterns themselves.

There are some nice patterns, and you get ideas for other patterns and other materials to use. All equipment is not covered, but it is a good starting place. I learned alot and would recommend the book to others who are interested in glass engraving.

this is a pattern book, with all paterns protected by copyright. how is ist possible to copyright the works of artists that lived from 500 to 2500 years ago, as well as traditional celtic patterns.

some of the patterns are big globs of black ink, that can't be copied.

the author does not even know nor adhere to the most basic principle of glass engraving:"engraved lines are white, unengraved polished glass is black".

there are some interesting paterns, if we would be allowed to use them, a pattern that we are not allowed to copy is no longera pattern. ... Read more

Perfect simple examples & templates
This book is exactly what it claims and perfectly fit my needs.The designs are lovely, effective and quite usable.

Great for beginners!
True, at first it does look a little like a coloring book but that's the fun of it. Why does everyone always need examples? What happened to using your imagination? This is a form of art. This book gives you the room to make decisions about the colors and textures of glass you want to use, which is what I like about it. Actual stained glass artists create their own color combinations. In order to preserve these type of books the pattern is photocopied and then each section is cut out so you have a template to use to cut out the glass. If anyone's worried about color then just do what others do. Either use colored pencils to color the pattern so you have an idea of what it will look like or pic out glass that appeals to you. It's really not that hard.
