From the supplier: Controversies continue to hound the calculation and uses of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the most well-known inflation indicator in the country. The CPI is blamed for overstating inflation rate, resulting in a federal deficit and prompting Federal Reserve Board Chmn. Alan Greenspan to suggest to lower it by one percentage point. Speaker Newt Gingrich agreed with the idea, but some Democratic senators denounced political pressure concerning the CPI and called for careful study. The dispute offers two lessons, namely, that there is no 'perfect' index and that politics should be kept out of good statistics.

From the supplier: An independent commission appointed by Congress to study the Consumer Price Index (CPI) found that inflation was being overstated by 1.1% annually, resulting in billions worth of overspending on benefit payments. Slowing CPI growth would slow down inflation growth and increase federal tax revenues by $21 billion by 2001. Federal, state, and local government spending growth would also decline if benefit payments were linked to CPI.

The effort gone into producing the data for this book is impressive. Appears to be extensive (exhaustive?) research through books and periodicals on American sanctions. However, the end result is a strict reference. A dictionary, more or less, with little or no information on each entry. A researcher needing this book would still have a lot of work to do, even in a preliminary investigation of the usefulness of the entries.

On another note, today this book is more useful as a CD or set of pages on the web, with simple searching ability. ... Read more
