4-0 out of 5 stars Useful but incomplete
Grammar books should be as sparkling and as vivacious as may be, but not too superficial and trivial in style. These attributes can be found in Professor Eugene Ehrlich's book; the author presents a clear and lively picture of the English grammar. Available with answers -making it ideal for self-study-, the book seems to have been done to make material and exercises as straightforward as possible without any "catches" or special difficulties -including a glossary of grammatical terms that the author prepared with great care. In the first chapter, the one I liked most, Professor Ehrlich expounds the principal elements of the sentence (the verb, the subject, the direct and indirect object of the verb and modifiers) that no one bothers to comment. Furthermore, he stresses the difference between a clause (a logical grouping of words that DOES contain a subject or verb) and a phrase (a logical grouping of words that DOES NOT) a distinction that no one bothers to make. But as you peruse the book you will quickly realize the absence of major English grammar structures such as the rules that govern the possessive, the double genitive, an exaustive explanation of the use of articles, and phrasal verbs; topics that are a big headache for those who learn English as a foreign language.

I certainly recommend the purchase of the book but I hope Professor Ehrlich will rectify these flaws in a fourth edition to deliver his wish expressed in the third ("...This third edition of English Grammar was developed to make the study of English grammar as current and as effective as possible for all students whether or not English in their first language...").

5-0 out of 5 stars English Grammar...
An excellent Outline that shows that English is a far more complex amalgamation that most people realize. It almost reads like a technical journal (simplified, of course!) for the uninitiated.A great reference, indeed!

I rate this book/outline: 5 Stars (R.I.P., Msr. Ehrlich)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected but still really good.
As with other Schaum's outlines, this one has lots of exercises for students to practice with. I was confused because I thought this book and Schaum's "theory and probs of english grammar" were different. In fact, they are the same (basically), but this one is simply an earlier edition... Perhaps the earliest?? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a marvelous and fun way to supplement and enhance the traditional grammar lesson and make it FUN!
The teacher, a cool orange cat in a dashing polka dot dress leads the class as they each carry their signs in a conjunction train. Most of the little kittens are paying attention and they have all learned that "conjunctions are connecting words like but or and or or, yet, until, unless, and as, along with for and nor.Conjunctions are joiners and oftentimes bridge "one phrase to another."They can be linkers too and "help to link a pair of verbs."They also can join sentences together into one.In this book you'll learn all about conjunctions in an easy way AND learning about conjunction can be painless by following these crazy cats as they teach you all about them.

There are some rules that people think are absolute, such as never using a conjunction to start a sentence, "But I say that's absurd," spouts out the professor at a grammar convention. He's got that big red book of Grammar Myths to prove his point. And everyone in the audience seemed to understand and carried him on their shoulders as they cheered. In this book you will learn all about conjunctions, the rules and the myths and how to use them.

This is a marvelous and fun way to supplement and enhance the traditional grammar lesson and make it FUN!Brian Cleary's ingenious rhyming schemes in his CATegorical books make learning grammar much easier, especially for the reluctant student who `just doesn't get it.'Each conjunction is highlighted in color, which makes them easy to spot throughout the book. The cats, needless to say, are always a bit zany and some of the sentences in this book will make everyone chuckle. This series of books will make a perfect addition to any homeschool OR classroom shelves! ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Plurality, Conjunction and Events presents a novel theoryof plural and conjoined phrases, in an event-based semantic framework. It begins by reviewing options for treating the alternation between`collective' and `distributive' readings of sentences containingplural or conjoined noun phrases, including analyses from both themodern and the premodern literature. It is argued that plural andconjoined noun phrases are unambiguously group-denoting, and that thecollective/distributive distinction therefore must be located in thepredicates with which these noun phrases combine. More specifically, predicates must have a hidden argument place for events; thecollective/distributive distinction may then be represented in thepart/whole structure of these events. This allows a natural treatmentof `collectivizing' adverbial expressions, and of `pluractional'affixes; it also allows a unified semantics for conjunction, in whichconjoined sentences and predicates denote groups of events, much likeconjoined noun phrases denote groups of individuals. ... In logic and mathematics, or, also known as logical disjunction or inclusive disjunction, is a logical operator that results in true whenever one or more of its operands are true. E.g. in this context, "A or B" is true if A is true, or if B is true, or if both A and B are true. In grammar, or is a coordinating conjunction. In ordinary language "or" sometimes has the meaning of exclusive disjunction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars yet another terrific book by Mark Lester, Ph.D.
ESL grammar is quite different from the traditional English grammar that Americans get--it uses different terminology, covers different subjects, and it is much more thorough. This becomes evident quickly when nonnative speakers ask native speakers grammar questions about determiners or phrasal verbs, for example. This book covers all the important subjects in detail, and it would be very good for intermediate/advanced ESL students as well as ESL tutors who need a quick reference guide with concise and clear explanations. The Introductions says "This book is for nonnative speakers of English who have already attained extensive fluency is classroom English. It is designed to help you move to the next level of functioning comfortably in a fully English-speaking environment . . . . The most important feature of this book is the immense amount of information about English grammar in general and about four specific areas of English grammar that are mostly likely to cause difficulties:
*Areas of unusual grammatical complexity.
*Areas of unusual irregularity.
*Areas in which native speakers routinely use special forms in conversational English.
*Areas in which both native and nonnative speakers of English often make mistakes."The book is divided into three sections: Noun Phrases, Verb Phrases, and Sentences.Like his other books, this one reads well, the explanations are in depth and clear, and there are hundreds of sample sentences to clarify the concepts.(The tone isn't as zaney as his previous books--no example sentences about Senator Fogg or the Seven Dwarves here, sorry.)Lester packs a lot in these 340+ pages.I keep looking for the One True Grammar Book handed down from on high that covers all contingencies, but there is no such thing. But this book does a pretty good job, considering its affordable price and small size. The truth is that educators need many different weapons in their arsenals, and this is a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic grammar guide even for non-ESL students
I am not an ESL student; I am an English speaking US citizen. I was looking for a grammar refresher, and could not find a decent book that went through the grammar structures I was looking for.

I started to look at ESL grammar books that helped ESL students, because I am about to take a Spanish immersion class and needed to know very specific grammar structure definitions to translate into Spanish.

For example, I needed to know the verb type infinitive, future perfect, etc, and I could not recall what those meant from my earlier years.

I couldn't find a single decent American guide out there. But the ESL guides cover them all in great detail.

If you are looking for a great grammar guide and are not even an ESL student, I highly recommend the ESL Grammar guides. This one in particular is fantastic.

I wish I could have purchased this in physical format, but I don't have the room to take it with me to Mexico. But on Kindle, I can do searches, etc, so it works out great for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESL Grammar by Lester is a real gem!
The author is a Professor of Linguistics who has written several successful textbooks and has taught English grammar to both college students and teachers. He thoroughly knows the subject and has a gift for creating sample sentences that are clever, entertaining, and clearly illustrate the points he wants to make. A highly recommended book for serious students of English! ... Read more

Product Description
This study applies linguistic research on discourse markers to sentence conjunctions in Matthew's Gospel. The treatment combines linguistic insights with a detailed examination of Matthew's use of kai, de and similar conjunctions in narrative passages, culminating in a verse by verse commentary on the structure of Matthew's "miracle chapters", Matthew 8-9. Black breaks new ground in linguistic theory by modelling the interplay between features such as sentence conjunction, word order and verb tense in the portrayal of continuity and discontinuity in Greek narrative. The volume is aimed at New Testament scholars, classicists, discourse analysts and linguists. ... Read more
