Dis ain't a bad gramer book.
The book is informative and funny. I learned some got grammar points and enjoyed reading it. What else can I say. I wish she would write another.

FUN, FUN BOOK!!!!
I listen to quite a bit of audio books when I am behind the wheel and sometimes the books can be a bit boring.Not this audio book!Fun listen.

Besides having a laugh while listening to the authors stories you're also brushing up on your grammar skills.Learning that the rules are forever changing and that most of the time chances are you the writer or speaker are right.

One of the reasons I enjoyed it is because in my head I was able to stick it tothose annoying people I've referred to as the "grammar police" or what the author called the "grammar snobs" who feel the need to correct or "one up" on others.I am related to a few of those and if I were inclined I would send them this book but I am sure the significance of it would go over their heads.

Anyway, it is a good book where it will either reinforce what you already know/knew or teach you something you did not know in a fun way.

Highly recommend!

A good time learning grammar???
This book is really awesome.I don't know the last time I actually wanted to sit down and read a grammar book.Surely, if you have a test to study for-- this probably isn't the book for you, but if you want to learn how to write better, this book is a great start.

This book provides funny lessons that not only teaches, but makes you remember because of the humor.For instance, in the first chapter she discusses two authors that she considers as "meanies". She says, "A bug crawled up Kilpatrick's and Safire's behinds and died."While trying to teach about possesives she notes: "if they shared a single behind, it would be 'Safire and Kilbatrick's butt.'"Genius-- I couldn't stop laughing.

Another Must-Have Book for Those Who Care About Their Grammar
Hilarious and educational. I've given this book to many people as gifts. You can't have enough on hand to let people "borrow". I wish I could buy a million and just give them out freely in the hopes that people everywhere will improve their grammar - even if just a little!

I wanted to be a English major, and now I are one!
Casagrande writes in an accessible style, with wit wrapped in sarcasm, inside a joke. Such is the springboard and follow-through for each lesson. Blackwell should be ashamed of this cheap, photocopied edition
This review does NOT speak to the quality of the content, but to the abysmal, borderline unreadable publishing job Blackwell did with this edition of the book. It is obvious that, rather than actually typesetting the book, they scanned a previous edition of the book at a low resolution, and then quickly, cheaply slapped it onto the pages of this edition. It looks like a "bootleg" copy. The lines of text are not even straight on the page, they are warped and crooked! The type is dirty and blurry. This is a 720-page book! Reading this much blurry text is at the least very unpleasant, and at worst might damage your eyes!

Dense, bad writing
Perhaps the best part of this book is that it has really good problem sets at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately that's where they the good ends. The writing is dense and hard to understand, as if the author is unable to articulate his thoughts cogently and concisely and hides it with vague words. There is a lot of information crammed on one page and the diagrams are not explained well. If you are a researcher it is important to articulate your ideas clearly so that your work is understood. I think schools that use this do it mainly out of tradition rather than the actual quality of the book. As for me I am off to search for better books to supplement this one.

Well-informed, poorly laid-out
Kenstowicz's textbook is an excellent starting place for an more in-depth examination of phonological theory. While he presents his arguments in a cogent fashion, the structure of the textbook leaves a great deal to be desired. It is probably most beneficial for a student or teacher to jump around the book putting things together that for some reason have been separated. But on the whole, I feel like this book provides a detailed presentation of both linear and non-linear phonology with a wealth of challenging and informative exercises. An excellent resource for graduate level work in phonology.

Search Elsewhere
I had to use this book for my intro phonology class at Harvard, and i have never been led so astray by a textbook in my entire life.Even my professor apologized for it's horrible quality on numerous occasions.It'sa shame that there aren't more textbooks on the subject available, becauseif there were, they would certainly be preferable to this catastrophe of apiece of academic writing.

Wonderful Intro to basic problems in phonological theory
This text is a classic and should be required reading for any non-introductory student of phonology.Its strengths include its discussion of the basic issues of phonology and its lovely problemsets.

Its greatest weakness is that many of the issues so clearly laidout in this book were of great concern to phonologists in 1977, but less sotoday.

Still, while the model that phonologists use to represent, forexample, "rule ordering" has changed, the discussion of"feeding," "counter feeding," "bleeding," and"counter bleeding" in this text, and certainly the languageexamples are relevant today.

This book may not be ideal for a student whotakes only one course in phonology since some of the discussion is outdatedand a bit complicated.It is, however, a good place to start for anystudent who wishes to understand the issues of generative, linearphonology, even if only out of historical interest. ... My children stuck their noses into this book!
They really enjoyed this book!

I didn't believe anyone can make "grammar" interesting to children. I have been teaching children English grammar for ten years. I was bored to teach them such boring things but the author of this book has changed my thought absolutely.

I want to show them this book, but I'm afraid my children won't let it go until they have read it thousands of times!

Milne's Practical Bengali Grammar is a wonderful resource if you are doing research on Bengali grammar. It is NOT suitable for people who want to learn Bengali. Milne wrote this in 1913 and it was reprinted (with 13 pages of errata still in place) in 1993. His interpretation of grammatical structure is often idiosyncratic and his example sentences far from everyday normal language. He has a lovely section on idiomatic expressions, proverbs etc where you can find all sorts of weird and wonderful things: 'we lose in hake but gain in herring'. In many ways this is a delightful book, but in order to appreciate it you need to know Bengali well and enjoy grammatical speculation. For help with learning Bengali I would recommend something more modern. ... Read more

Apontamentos de estudante
This book resembles my apontamentos de estudante (student notes) when I was a beginner learner of Portuguese. It is far from being an authoritative grammar book that will lead you to the mastery of Portuguese, as it appears to think it is. It lacks the background knowledge of the language that will enable to streamline what is important and what comes second. It is very much, as I said, a tentative work of a beginner learner, not the competent guide a master can devise. Not good enough.

As someone who can speak the language quite well, I was asked my opinion on this book. That is how I came across it. Here it is my opinion, not just for the learner who asked me but for all the learners looking for good books who may read this review. Look elsewhere is my advice.

What is this book for?
If this book is for a beginner, then it should give better basic information on the language. Everything is oversimplified, and much is misleading. Some statements are positively wrong, like saying that the gender of words for people and animals is determined by the sex. Not always, eg, 'pessoa', 'crocodilo', and many other examples. A beginner also does not need to learn things like the archaic form for the second person, used in church services. Equally not for the beginner are the complicated tenses that usually you can find in more advanced grammars, like 'we would not have visited the castle' (nao teriamos visitado o castelo) or I would have been speaking (eu teria estado a falar / falando).

If this is for someone who already knows the basics and wants to brush up his or her Portuguese (my case), then the reader spots the flaws. Flaws are not just oversimplifications and misleading statements; there are also true mistakes. In particular need of revision are the sections on the personal infinitive, the passice voice, and radical changing verbs etc.

very adequate
My jaw dropped at reading the horrible reviews of this book so I followed the advice and bought Prista's, expecting to see some magic and here's what I found.

Prista's book, though ok, is NOWHERE near as thorough as this one.This small book, by Sue Tyson-Ward, covers just about every section of portuguese you will need to be a fully functional speaker and I credit what I've learned to this book.I speak Portuguese with native speakers who correct me when necessary and I can say that they don't do that so often.

I see Prista's book as something for someone who is in a massive rush and who will not grasp the necessary intricacies of the language because the explanations are chopped short for the sake of saying SEE, WE TOLD YOU IT WOULD BE SHORT!

I confidently recommend the book on this page for those who need thorough explanations backed with examples.Prista's book has some pros - for example clever ways to remember Port words by learning english suffix equivalencies, etc., but at the end of the day you will walk away from the Tyson-Ward book with the capability to to read and speak Portuguese on a high conversational and literary level.

Self-promoting and flawed
When i bought this book i looked up the word 'pessoa'. This means person and plural 'pessoas' means people. Grammatically this word is always feminine but applies to both male and female. This does not fit in with what this grammar teaches. I sought help. Then i was shown several faults in this book. The worst apears to be the verbs.

I bought this book because i believed what it says, that it is a practical guide to the mastery of Portuguese. I fell for it andam quite annoyed with myself for being so gullible. Perhaps some good will come out of this bad experience. If this review stops other learners from making the same mistake, then it wasn't a cmplete waste of time and money.

80% gimmick 20% substance
This book boasts it gives you verbs and grammar (as if verbs were not grammar!).Sweeping statements, muddled notes, this sums up what you find when you open the book. I gave it up and bought Prista's grammar. Great reference
This is a great reference grammar for anyone studying Latin. Complete, concise, portable, well-organized, and cheap. It has short, to-the-point explanations of all points of Latin grammar. Perfect for the beginning/intermediate student of Latin who just needs a quick explanation of usage or forms. There are excellent tables of forms for nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, etc. that are very helpful for review. The only problem i have with this book is the omission of 'v' in favor of 'u' throughout, hence 'vivo' is spelled 'uiuo' making the obvious derivative "vivacious" not as obvious. I understand the argument, but if I'm not mistaken wasn't 'V' the letter that was used in Classical Latin? 'IESVS CHRISTVS' not 'IESUS CHRISTUS'. Also, if we want to read Latin as Cicero did shouldn't we eliminate punctuation LOWER-CASE LETTERS AND WORDSPACINGTHESECONVENTIONSWERENOTUSEDUNTILHUNDREDSOFYEARSLATER That said, this is a great little reference grammar for those starting out in Latin.. buy it!

Pretty Good
This is small and compact yet still has more than enough information readily at hand.One nice thing is that for the paradigms, for instance, something other than the usual 'porto' and 'femina' are used.This isn't really important, but it's nice.Also each grammar rule has a couple of illustrated sentences, which often show how to recast English thought into Roman thought.
It has a few paragraphs on the pronunciation of Latin in England that, while not particularly useful and vaguely interesting, does show what classical --as opposed to Church -- pronunciation is/was.
One bit of pretentiousness: the author is "delighted to have banished the letter 'v' from the Latin alphabet. It was never there."Maybe not, but neither were lower case letters.
But as a one volume, fairly inclusive grammar, it's worth the price.

Most concise Latin grammar available
This book is a must have for the student of Latin. It is by far the most concise book on Latin grammar out there. It is excellent for review and as a reference tool. It is not a textbook and should not be used to learn the langauge. Wheelock and others are more helpful for that purpose. But you have already studied a year or two of Latin and need an occaisonal refresher on the conjugations, declension or grammatical rules this is a highly useful book to own. It is remarkably well organized and I have found it especially useful as a way of reviewing and reinforcing previously learned rules and forms.

Short and sweet
This is not a course in Latin but on the other hand it is not a reference grammar either. As the introduction says, "it aims to be a 'primer' (a first book) and at the same time something more than that." In fact, it is a short introduction to all the major grammatical points of the language as well as a handy reference for the accidence, without covering all the fine points you would expect to find in a true reference grammar like Gildersleeve. I particularly like the convenient groupings of things like place words (ubi, hic, illic, inde, etc.) and some of the confusing adverbs and conjunctions like quidem, quin, quominus, and quamuis (not quamvis, note; the letter "v" is not used in this book). There are a few short exercises, but no keys. Appendices cover dates, money, Roman names, literary terms, and weights and measures. A short vocabulary includes only words used in the exercises. All in all, a surprising amount of information is packed into less than 200 pages, yet the book does not feel at all dense or cramped.

There is a hidden gem...
The grammar portion is no-frills, and as the other reviewers have mentioned, parts are out dated. So why 5 stars? Because it is a great vocabulary book!!In the back, there is a list of 2400 cognates....words that have the same meaning and are virtually identical in spelling to English words. You already know 2400 Spanish words...you just don't know which ones they are.The author is dead on when he states "There aren't many short cuts to learning and study. This (list) is one of the few of real value"It's worth way more than 6 bucks...trust me.

Concise, but lacking one thing...
This book is a nice reference tool, however, it lacks one important thing. Tu. The familiar "you". I don't know how this book discounts such an important thing. If I were Dover Pubs., I'd make an updated version including tu. As a former high school Spanish student that wanted some review before traveling to South America, this book disappointed. If you are looking to travel to Brazil or learn a little bit about Portuguese, the "Essential Portuguese Grammar" by DaPrista is an excellent reference covering most bases.

Needs to be updated
I bought this guide after purchasing Resnick's 1001 Most Useful Spanish Words, which is an incredibly bargain at [price].Essential Spanish Grammar, at [price], isn't so bad either EXCEPT for a critical need for updating in terms of pronouns and verb conjugations.In the 1950s, when this guide was written, it was a given that one did not use the familiar "you," so Resnick ignores it completely.Of course, these days it's "tu" not "Usted," and someone, perhaps Resnick's editor, needs to acknowledge that with a revised edition.

Somewhat lacking
This book isn't bad if you consider how thin and cheap it is. It sacrifices completeness, emphasizing learning in a short time "what you'd be most likely to use."It completly omits using "tu", claiming that one only essentially needs "ustedes" (a bit annoying).Overall, it does serve its stated purpose of serving those with limited learning time. ... As long as you like Pinyin, you'll like this Grammar Book
This is one of the few Chinese Grammar books written in English for the English speaker studying Chinese. AND, it contains both the simplified characters used on the Mainland as well as the traditional characters used in Taiwan and a few other places. The book is comprehensive and has an excellent index. The only thing keeping it from a five-star rating is the errors of fact it contains in various statements about how Mandarin is being used in Taiwan. For example, page 9, section 2.4 states that some characters lose their original tone and are changed to neutral but only on the Mainland and never in Taiwan. I cannot speak for the Mainland but the tone change is most certainly current in Taiwan. (Ref: Taiwan National Normal University, Mandarin Training Center where I am studying.) There are a number of other errors of this kind.

Ridiculously simple
I really felt that this workbook was a waste of money.There's no substance any to the exercises.Most of them are fill-in-the-blank where you choose one of four or five words, and all based on what you studied in the last two or three pages in the textbook.A kindergartner could do this.

An excellent workbook for learners of Chinese!

Between the years 350 and 500 a large body of Latin artes grammaticae emerged, educational texts outlining the study of Latin grammar and attempting a systematic discussion of correct Latin usage. These texts—the most complete of which are attributed to Donatus, Charisius, Servius, Diomedes, Pompeius, and Priscian—have long been studied as documents in the history of linguistic theory and literary scholarship. In Grammar and Christianity in the Late Roman World, Catherine Chin instead finds within them an opportunity to probe the connections between religious ideology and literary culture in the later Roman Empire.

To Chin, the production and use of these texts played a decisive role both in the construction of a pre-Christian classical culture and in the construction of Christianity as a religious entity bound to a religious text. In exploring themes of utopian writing, pedagogical violence, and the narration of the self, the book describes the multiple ways literary education contributed to the idea that the Roman Empire and its inhabitants were capable of converting from one culture to another, from classical to Christian. The study thus reexamines the tensions between these two idealized cultures in antiquity by suggesting that, on a literary level, they were produced simultaneously through reading and writing techniques that were common across the empire.

Biblical Aramaic Grammar
Fairly clear grammar, though organization of the book is somewhat lacking. A better grammar is by Rosenthal, though I believe you can only get that book used. This is an okay book for a brief overview of the topic however a more detailed book, such as Rosenthal, will be needed for anyone hoping to progress in their understanding of the language.

A Much Needed Companion to John's Book
This book makes up for the one key deficiency in John's Grammar which is that it lacks an answer key.Jumper gives more than answers in this book.He explains how the answers were arrived at and he also provides alternatives.Anyone using John's Grammar needs this book.

A Necessary Supplement
Jumper's Answer Key provides what has been lacking for decades. As Alger Johns's Grammar has been an excellent resource for the study of biblical Aramaic, it offers the student helpful exercises without a full explanation of the answers. That is where Jumper meets the reader's need. By offering answers to Johns's exercises along with thorough annotations, he provides information which is invaluable to the student desiring a full explanation of the methods for interpretation of each exercise. The cross-referencing to Johns's book is very useful. One text should not be used without the other!

Jumper's Annotated Key to Johns's Aramaic Grammar
As one who teaches Aramaic annually, I can attest that Johns's "A Short Grammar of Biblical Aramaic" is a quick, efficient way to learn biblical Aramaic well.Yet its exercises contain practice sentences that are purposely very challenging, and therefore can be offputting to students.James Jumper has put together, with the permission of the publishers (Andrews University Press), a clearly annotated key to all the exercise sentences in Johns' grammar, de-mystifying those sentences and adding a lot of helpful comments and grammar reminders in the process.
Johns's grammar has some real advantages for learning Aramaic. For example, it takes seriously the proto-semitic reflexes for virtually all forms (great for those interested in comparative Semitic grammar, but not necessary for using the book to learn Aramaic). It also treats the Peil as a separate conjugation, which is certainly how native speakers in OT times understood it, however certain modern grammarians may "theorize" about its role.
Jumper's "Key" makes Johns's grammar more accessible than ever -- a real gain for Aramaic students.I think that anyone who uses Johns's Grammar would find it advantageous and time-saving to purchase Jumper's Key along with it.
