Great grammar fun
This is a great supplement to your English grammar lessons for grade-school age children.My kids are 9 and 6 and they really enjoy these silly tales.We use them to reinforce concepts that we have already studied or to introduce new concepts.My son read the publisher's description and remarked, "It really is rib-tickling!" Everyone needs one!
When I retired from teaching AP and IB English language and literature, I had a very old copy of the original printing (Warriner's) of this book on the eleventh-grade level, but I donated it to a young foreign language teacher who was struggling to teach her students because they did not know their own English grammar. Then, as my grandchildren began high school, their parents complained that their own children were making dreadful errors in composition because they did not know their grammar. More troubling was that their young teachers didn't know their grammar either and were awarding A's for writing that not only did not deserve the grades but also would not be given a good score according to the SAT guidelines when the students prepared to enter college. Each of my children's families now have one of these on an appropriate grade level, and I regularly give the senior level as a high school graduation gift. ... Read more

The Glencoe Grammar and Composition handbook looks pretty good.I also purchased the Writer's Choice student text and find that I probably won't need the W.C. text.The handbook looks like it is all I really need to teach my kids grammar/composition.The handbook is awesome for additional reference and practice. ... Outstanding!! Wonderful product from Critical Thinking Co.
What makes this book so great is that it demonstrates why grammar/puncuation rules are so important in a humorous way - a bit like "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" (although this book came first by 3 years).Each lesson begins with a funny, illustrated misunderstanding caused by improper grammar, then clearly explains the grammar rule.For example:

You write:"The girl caught the ball running."
Readers think:The ball was caught as IT ran.
You mean:The running girl caught the ball.

A few pages of exercises follow the example - including a couple of challenge exercises for kids who enjoy logic/thinking thinking games.Some kids might need more practice in the concepts being taught, particularly kids on the lower end of the recommended grades (4-7).I just throw in a couple of extra worksheets for the concepts my daughter struggles with.

Overall, the Language Mechanic is quite comprehensive.It covers capitalization, run-ons and fragments, pronouns, modifiers, verbs, agreement, unnecessary words, punctuation (a separate section on commas), friendly letters, spelling and vocabulary.

I give this book an A+.It encourages a child to think first about what he/she is trying to communicate, and then to use the correct grammar to make his/her point.The humor, the visual, the clear rules, and the well-thought out practice exercises are bound to help help any child learn and retain grammar rules. ... Good book, not for advanced learners
I bought this book for my 8th grader, and it has great basic grammar instruction. However, my daughter is a pretty advanced reader and writer, and this was way too simplistic for her. I would say this is more appropriate for a lower grade level or for a remedial or ESL learner. ... Read more
