Product Description
The material in this book documents the presented papers, the discussions and additional contributions triggered by the EUROGRAPHICS workshop on Graphics Hardware held at the annual conference EG '87 in Amsterdam. The first part considers Algorithmic Aspects of graphics systems realisation. It is worthwhile to note that besides "classical" topics like Hidden-line Elimination or Ray-Tracing, new results of computional geometry are presented in a hardware-oriented context. The second part on Subsystems describes hardware solutions for special tasks in the computer image generation pipeline, e.g. fast coordinate transformation and perspective projection. The last part addresses System Architecture. It demonstrates by rather different examples the wide range of possible and feasible solutions to build graphics hardware. Unlike the situation in graphics software where a common understanding and an accepted concept has been formed by the standardization process, many architectural options are still to be exploited and evaluated. Especially the interaction between VLSI opportunities, newly developed algorithms, and the increasing diversity of applications encourage again and again innovative solutions and keep graphics hardware a lively working area. ... Product Description
This book is a collection of the finalized versions of the papers presented at the third Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware. The diversity of the contributions reflects the widening range of options for graphics hardware that can be exploited due to the constant evolution of VLSI and software technologies. The first part of the book deals with the algorithmic aspects of graphics systems in a hardware-oriented context. Topics are: VLSI design strategies, data distribution for ray-tracing, the advantages of point-driven image generation with respect to VLSI implementation, use of memory and ease of parallelization, ray-tracing, and image reconstruction. The second part is on specific hardware, on content addressable memories and voxel-based systems. The third part addresses parallel systems: massively parallel object-based architectures, two systems in which image generated by individual rendering systems are composited, a transputer-based parallel display processor. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The only book there is?
Image generation -- especially real time image generation -- is a VERY difficult subject to present.. or to understand. In the present case the book does not sufficiently cover the priciplesof perception -- how humansperceive the outside world and thus how visual information must bepresented to maximize its impact. Certainly, the importance of flicker, peripheral vision, contrast and the acuity of the human eye are essentialto presentation of image generation theory and practice.

The importanceof polygon rates and pixel fill rates were not presented adequately.Inaddition, transport delay and its destruction of valid training benefitswas not adequately covered. The fact that image generators have internalprocesses which can vary in processing time from frame to frame was notadequately covered.

The various methods of handling levels of detail andtheir impact on frame rates and transport delay were not covered.

Moredata on the impact of Phong shading or Gouraud shading on frame rates wasneeded.

A better discussion of nearest neighbor, MIP MAP, bilinear MIPMAP, triliniear MIP MAP and Anisotropic texture was needed.

As fordisplay systems, collimated displays -- glass and MYLAR -- and especiallyCalligraphic displays are all essential to understanding real time imagegeneration and its display systems. ... Read more

Product Description
The Eurographics hardware workshops have become an established forum for the exchange of information about the latest developments in computer graphics hardware, a field of growing importance. This volume contains papers representing a comprehensive record of the contributions to the fifth workshop at EG '90 in Lausanne. The first part is devoted to rendering machines. The papers in this part address techniques for accelerating the rendering of images and efficient ways of improving their quality. The second part, on ray tracing, describes algorithms and architectures for producing photorealistic images, with emphasis on ways of reducing the time needed for this computationally intensive task. The third part, on visualization systems, covers a number of topics, including voxel-based systems, radiosity, animation and special rendering techniques. The contributions show there is flourishing activity in the development of new algorithmic and architectural ideas and in absorbing the impact of VLSI technology. The increasing diversity of applications encourages new solutions, and graphics hardware has become a research area of high activity and importance. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A stencil buffer is an extra buffer, in addition to the color buffer (pixel buffer) and depth buffer (z-buffering) found on modern computer graphics hardware. The buffer is per pixel, and works on integer values, usually with a depth of one byte per pixel. The depth buffer and stencil buffer often share the same area in the RAM of the graphics hardware. In the simplest case, the stencil buffer is used to limit the area of rendering (stenciling). More advanced usage of the stencil buffer makes use of the strong connection between the depth buffer and the stencil buffer in the rendering pipeline. For example, stencil values can be automatically increased/decreased for every pixel that fails or passes the depth test. ... Read more

The latest developments in graphics hardware are reported in this book, which contains papers forming a comprehensive record of the 1989 Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware. The Eurographics workshops have become an established forum for an exchange of information on the latest developments in this field of growing importance. Starting with computationally expensive graphics algorithms, several architectural solutions are given and contrasted to general purpose solutions. The main focus is the potential to exploit the options of VLSI designs for high-performance graphics systems. Contributions give detailed descriptions of realized systems for volume visualization, high-speed ray tracers, a two-pass radiosity solution, and highly efficient solutions of the anti-aliasing problem. The reader is given an in-depth presentation of the various systems a designer can now choose from, including transputer solutions and the Intel i860TM processor. ... Read more

Excerpt: This is a list of home computers, sorted alphanumerically, which lists all relevant details of their video hardware. A home computer was the description of the second generation of desktop computers, entering the market in 1977 and becoming common during the 1980s. A decade later they were generally replaced by IBM PC compatible "PCs", although in actuality home computers are also members of the class known as personal computers. Examples of typical early home computers are the BBC Micro, the ZX Spectrum, the MSX 1, the Amstrad CPC 464 and the Commodore 64. Examples of typical late home computers are MSX 2 systems, and the Amiga and Atari ST systems. Note: in cases of manufacturers who have made both home and personal computers, only machines fitting into the home computer category are listed. These systems, except for Early Macintosh personal computers, are generally all based on the VGA standard, and use a video chip known as a Graphics processing unit. Although very early PCs used one of the much simpler (even compared to most home computer video hardware) video display controller cards, using standards such as the MDA, Hercules Graphics Card, CGA and EGA standard). Only after the introduction of the VGA standard could PCs really compete with the home computers of the same era, such as the Amiga and Atari ST, or ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8873033 ...
