5-0 out of 5 stars A BEGINNER'S TREAT TO THE WORLD OF GRASSHOPPERS!
It seems that the author, Cheryl Coughlan, has written numerous small, introductory books about insects. She has her craft down well and knows how to communicate with the very young simply yet easily. The Product Details state the book is for reading level ages 4-8.I believe that 8 year olds could tackle something somewhat more advanced. But it is perfect for the other ages.Comprehensive, brief and really quite fascinating!

The photographs are glorious. They are credited to a number of photographers, not just one.In my recollection, the only grasshoppers I've ever seen have been green. But the grasshoppers in these photos look more like the colors of precious jewels than anything plain. They are stunning!

The author describes the grasshoppers' habitats, colors, anatomy, biological makeup, and notes some very interesting facts, such as that grasshoppers have breathing holes in the sides of their bodies called spiracles (and we get to see a photo of this), they have four wings, and last, but not least, they use brown spit to keep enemies at bay.And we even get to see a photo of this too!And all of this in brief 24 pages, which include a short list of "Words to Know", a further reading list, as well as internet sites on the subject, and an Index/Word list so that a child can assimilate the learning of new related words.Words such as keep, jump, grassy and, of course, spiracles.

I had fun reading this book. And it would be a delight to read/show it to a child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book I could understand!!
I can say, without hesitation, I have never read a book on the mysterious 'Revelation' quite like this one. First, it is a (relatively) short book. When I finally decided to study Revelation, most books (including the 'Idiot' books) were WAY to long for me. Not this one.

Second, this book is simple. Can you say SIMPLE? It explains the book in short, bite-sized pieces that don't cause me theological indigestion.

Third, instead of going on and on, it is wonderfully organized. No wasted space, but no leaving out stuff either.

Fourth, and best, this interpretation doesn't get bogged down in twenty-five different views on Revelation most of which appear absurd even to a layperson like me. It is BIBLE-centered, and CHRIST-centered. Kudos on that.

Last, it is practical. I like the 'backpack for the road' style in each chapter which gives us practical lessons to use everyday. I didn't realize Revelation had so much of this.

I guess my point is that young people (over about 14) as well as Christians wanting a simple but complete explanation of Revelation will love this book. I must note that it does teach the Rapture, so if you aren't into that, you might be lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Stole my daughter's copy; NOT just for teenagers despite the title..."
OMG--I never thought I would ENJOY the Book of Revelation! Here's the scoop on how this came down.

My teenage daughter came home from youth group where the kids had been studying the end times. The only book Miguel (her youth director) could find on Revelation was this one. He gave away 5 copies to the kids with best attendance. As you can probably figure, my daughter got one and showed it to me.

Well, I read it through in a couple of hours. What that did was make me so excited about studying Revelation that I got out my Bible, and have been comparing notes for the last week and a half! I never knew how simple the last book of the Bible could really be, or how much God loves Planet Earth and His creations! Who would have thought a middle-aged mom would get such as thrill out of a Bible study!

I won't add to what everyone has said. This little book is NOT, I repeat NOT just for teens. It is a book for anyone interested in more than an overview and less than a theological snoozer--on Revelation.

It is thematically organized, Jesus-centered, and truly digestible reading! It is faithful to the Scripture (believe me, I checked) and honestly, explains every aspect of Revelation so that even a mom can understand it.

Yes, my daughter will get her book back, but not before I organize our working moms Bible study group around this new topic!

5-0 out of 5 stars "A smashing success....absolutely fascinating!" (Revised review by Dr. David Reagan,'Lamplighter Magazine', Nov. 2006)

Jerry Parks may have a doctorate in theology, but it has not made him intellectually stuffy, or rendered him incapable of communicating effectively with young people. His commentary on the book of Revelation entitled "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" was designed to communicate with teens, and it is a smashing success!

I was absolutely fascinated by the book. When I started reading it, I just could not put it down. I was shouting `Halleluiah' by the end of the very first chapter! Dr. Parks is obviously a person who really knows and understands Bible prophecy in general, and the book of Revelation in particular. And, he has been blessed with formidable communication skills.

When I wrote to Dr. Parks to congratulate him on the book, I asked him how he had come up with the idea of writing hit. He replied: "The idea came from my 7th grade, after-school prayer group. They wanted to learn Revelation. To write a handbook simple enough for teens to 'wade' across, and yet thorough enough for new Christians to learn from, was a daunting task."

Dr. Parks is a middle school teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, where he teaches at Southland Christian Church

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5-0 out of 5 stars "If Dave Reagan liked it, I knew it must be pretty good"

I am a lifelong listener to "Lamb & Lion Ministry" and Dr. David Reagan. When I heard him mention that he liked this little book, since he knows Revelation better than just about anybody, I knew I really ought to read it.

I have studied Revelation all my life, so I can't say I learned a whole lot. I must say I never heard about the secret message in the order of the 12 tribal names (which gave me goosebumps!), but for anyone who is new to Revelation, I will assure you this book is solid.

As a few other said, the way it is organized is the strong suite of this book. If you just want to see how Revelation 'pictures' Christ--read that. If you just want practical daily application, you can just read 'backpack for the journey'. If you only want to learn the terms, you can just do that in each chapter. I love this organization.

I guess what I like the best was how ALL the chapter pictures of Jesus in each chapter form one final message to all His children at the end of Revelation. This shows how AWESOME our God is in the way He reveals secret information for those who know where to look. This makes all the 'Bible code' stuff look pale in comparison.

I would say anyone 15 and older will find this very, very helpful if you are just getting into Revelation. This won't be the last book on it you'll want to read, but it might be your best FIRST one.

5-0 out of 5 stars "This little handbook is the finest short work on Revelation I've ever read. Loved it!"

I am not a teenager or new Christian--the target audience for this book. I also thought I knew the Book of Revelation pretty well, having studied about the Millennium, the Rapture, and the Second Coming for many (many) years.

So why did I get this book? Partly because if Dave Reagan liked it (see his comment) it must be pretty good (I love 'Lamb & Lion' ministry), but mostly because I so loved the author's other work: "With Joseph in the University of Adversity". But, I soon discovered this book on Revelation is a completely different style. It's also the finest short work on Revelation I've ever read.

I can't add much to what others have said. The winning points of this book are:

*It's simple enough for a 'newbie' but deep enough to teach us all. (The 'message' in the list of 12 tribes is awesome! Never heard that before!)

*It's got a lot of really PRACTICAL things for everyday life. Most Revelation books just explain the verses.

*It's short enough to make an easy-read, but still contains every verse of Revelation and wonderfully organized content.

*It's lightly illustrated (OK, I like this kind of stuff, so there!)

*It's got a primary focus on Jesus Christ--not just as the coming Messiah, but as Revelation pictures Him in SO many ways. This is almost a 'life of Christ' picking up after the Gospels.

This book would make a great handbook (that's what it is) for group bible study, or gift to a young person who is interested in Revelation. HOWEVER, I do think young teenagers might find even this simple book too much. You have to understand some bible to appreciate it, but that's why Revelation is the last book in the bible anyway, don't you think?

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic Story retold for Young Readers - a review of "The Ant and the Grasshopper"
This little "Read-it! Readers" book is a Yellow Level.Yellow level books are supposed to have more challenging ideas, more challenging vocabulary, and a variety of sentences.Since that is not a terribly helpful description for moms and other people, I went and looked up the 'Accelerated Reading' description. The AR designation is 1.9;or in other words "The Ant and the Grasshopper" is basically at thesecond grade level.[1.9 really translates as a book for first graders in their 9th month of school.Since children vary in their accomplishments at this age don't take this number as written in stone. It is however a good way to judge level after you figure our where your child(ren) currently stand on its scale.]

More difficult vocabulary includes: field, serious, harvested, begged, bored, neighbor, and knocked.
Here is some actual text from two pages that you can also use to judge appropriateness.

The ant woke early
each summer morning.
He was a serious worker.

From sunrise until sunset,
the ant harvested food.
He stored it in his home.

Three Stars. The theme for this version of the classic Aesop story is best summed up by the final sentence in the book:"There's a time for play and a time for work."This is a nice book that retells the classic Aesop tale in words that fairly accomplished readers can understand and enjoy.Artwork is cute and colorful.Okay Read-aloud.Sentences are presented in large font and 'chunked' phrases.AR [Accelerated Reading] designation is 1.9.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who's Got Game? Not the Author!
It's ok to have an appreciation for the arts. What's NOT ok is the author's message to kids that it's ok to completely cast aside your responsibility to provide for yourself in the pursuit of your dream of being an artist. What would have been a better twist on this story is that in the end the ant was not only a responsible citizen but an artist as well. I don't recommend this version. Stick with the original Aesop's fable version. ART IS WORK but if nobody wants to buy it then you better be able to eat it.

This is an unusual book. The Grasshoppers Come is fiction: Rabbit in the Air in non-fiction. They are however united by the subject of flying. Of The Grasshoppers Come, T. E. Lawrence wrote to David Garnett, 'The Grasshoppers is however imperative need for a letter. In it you have suddenly broken, I think, into sincerity. The flying is real. For the first time, in all that you have written, I feel a necessity of utterance, a fusion of matter and manner so complete that the manner is almost absorbed. . . It is the first account of real flying by a real writer who can really fly: and it gave me a very great sense of long distance, and of the incommunicable cradle-dandling which is a cockpit in flight.'T. E. Lawrence was right, David Garnett could fly and A Rabbit in the Air is worked up from 'notes from a diary kept while learning to handle an aeroplane.' Of this book it has been nicely said, 'a book through whose pages the wind blows.'Although David Garnett's aim appears to be modest, to describe the two years he spent learning to fly Bluebirds and Moths, this is a classic of aviation literature, almost inviting comparison with Saint-Exupery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still the Best Guide to the Orthopteroid Orders
Helfer's monumental guide to grasshoppers and their relatives was originally published by William C. Brown many years ago.Fortunately Dover reprinted this classic. While behind in taxonomy, this book is still very useful and by far the most complete guide available.I only wish they would revise it, but I doubt that it will happen any time soon.

I used this guide extensively while I was co-authoring a manual of grasshoppers in New Mexico and found it then to be the best and most accurate publication (despite the dated taxonomy) for both amateur and professional orthopterist. Helfer's book is still the only source for a non-technical overview of camel crickets, mantids, walkingsticks, and some others for North America and holds its own against more up to date books on grasshoppers, katydids and crickets, despite the lack of color plates.

If you are interested in the hopping, chirping and scuttling inhabitants of your part of the world, you can't go wrong in obtaining a copy of this marvelous book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of hopping hoppers
Although scientific names are a bit out of date, this book helps the serious student identify almost all of the roaches, mantids, walking sticks, earwigs, grasshoppers, and crickets in the U.S. I had a copy some time ago, lost it, and am glad to find another to replace it. The information in this book is at the level of a good field guide, but more complete than any could be. This is a great reference for the naturalist or field biologist involved with grasshoppers and their kin.

This book was recommended to me by a local naturalist and I'm so glad I took the advice to buy it.Its very complete. There are no photographs, its all drawings and text but the drawings are very good.Lots of detail.I think this is for someone who is already familiar with insect taxonomy since there are a lot of refernces to specific part such as pronotum, tegmina, etc.Its a fantastic book though and one that I for example have been able to grow into. Appearance ofthe insects, sounds they make habits etc are all discussed.Latin and common names are used. Its a fun book. For the id, I use this book in addition to others that have photographs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Encouragement for Christians
Enjoyed reading Mitchell's book encouraging people to stop living the "grasshopper mentality" of 10 of the 12 spies who on Moses' orders went to spy on the Land of Canaan.

Among the important points Mitchell covers include:

1.If we attack giants in our own strength, we will be defeated every time!
2.Medical evidence suggests positive thinking is good for our health.
3.Be careful of who you spend time with.Be around encouragers and avoid overly negative people.
4.Faith is best placed in God, not self.
5.We must be willing to pay the price for dealing with giants.
6.Be an encourager!Encouragers are strong and secure enough to give of themselves to other people.
7.Larger successes result from larger challenges - God uses challenges to mold us into His likeness.
8.Sometimes God will get us out of our comfort zone because He wants to do a great work in our lives.
9.Slaying giants can benefit others as well as ourselves.
10. Joshua was one Biblical figure who was successful because he was able to keep his focus.

If you are looking for an easy read full of encouraging thoughts and words, then this is an excellent read.

The participants responded very positively to the encouraging and self-concept building message. In a culture which focuses on the "outward man" and robs youth of self-confidence, it is a blessing to have a guide which teaches today's youth that God looks inside and that each of them can be mighty, victorious, and successful! This book would also make a fine family devotional guide as well as in small groups.Though it is targeted at youth, adults will learn and grow by internalizing the concepts of overcoming "grasshopper mentality".You won't be disappointed. ... Product Description
For more than a century, the study of ceramics has been a fundamental base for archaeological research and anthropological interpretaion in the American Southwest. The widely distributed White Mountain Red Ware has frequently been used by archaeologists to reconstruct late 13th and 14th century Western Pueblo sociopolitical and socioeconomic organization. Relying primarily on stylistic analyses and the relative abundance of this ceramic ware in site assemblages, most scholars have assumed that it was manufactured within a restricted area on the southeastern edge of the Colorado Plateau and distributed via trade and exchange networks that may have involved controlled access to these ceramics. This monograph critically evaluates these traditional interpretations, utilizing large-scale compositional and petrographic analyses that established multiple production zones for White Mountain Red Ware—including one in the Grasshopper region—during Pueblo IV times. The compositional data combined with settlement data and an analysis of archaeological contexts demonstrates that White Mountain Red Ware vessels were readily accessible and widely used household goods, and that migration and subsequent local production in the destinaton areas were important factors in their wide distribution during the 14th century. Ceramic Commodities and Common Containers provides new insights into the organization of ceramic production and distribution in the northern Southwest and into the processes of social reorganization that characterized the late 13th and 14th century Western Pueblo world. As one of the few studies that integrate materials analysis into archaeological research, Triadan's monograph marks a crucial contribution to the reconstruction of these prehistoric societies. ...
