Its satellite islands of Ereikousa, Othoni and Mathraki counterclockwise NW, WNW and W respectively (with respect to the northern part of the island at the top of the map) and Paxoi and Antipaxoi on the SE side, are visible. The name Corfu is an Italian corruption of the Byzantine (Koryph), meaning "city of the peaks", which is derived from the Greek (Koryphai) (crests or peaks), denoting the two peaks of Palaio Frourio. In shape it is like the sickle (drepan, ), to which it was compared by the ancients: the concave side, with the town and harbour of Corfu in the centre, lies toward the Albanian coast. With the island's area estimated at 227 square miles (588 km), it runs approximately 40 miles (64 km) long, with greatest breadth at around 20 miles (32 km). Two high and well-defined ranges divide the island into three districts, of which the northern is mountainous, the central undulating, and the southern low-lying. Product Description
Focusing on the Mediterranean area where water management is crucial, this pioneering study is the first to show how the supply, distribution, and drainage of water contributed to the urbanization of ancient cities. Drawing from classical archaeology, the theory and history of urbanization, geology, and hydraulic engineering, Crouch examines water-system elements, including springs, fountains, wells, channels and drains, latrines, laundry, and dishwashing, as they relate to each other and to the physical, historical, and social bases of ancient Greek cities.Studying numerous sites including Pompeii, Pergamon, Athens, Samos, Delphi, and Corinth, she concludes that increased knowledge and skill in management of water contributed directly to the urbanization of the ancient Greek world.Illustrated with excellent photographs and line drawings, the discussions of supply, distribution, and drainage of water are organized topically, rather than chronologically or by site, offering an excellent example of the interdisciplinary approach. Crouch's study raises stimulating questions for further research, indicates entirely new directions for established academic disciplines, and suggests useful procedures for modern cities facing problems of water supply and management. ... Product Description
This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many recent studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and more recent historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society. ... Product Description
During the Hellenistic period, the Greek city states were thought to have lost their independence and thus also their means of democratic government. This study shows that interstate relations among the Greek cities of coastal Asia Minor were still active at that time. Measures were taken to solve conflicts and to strengthen ties of friendship among cities, but the cities did not refrain from claiming their rights from each other and even waging wars; in the power struggle between the changing hegemons, the polis had possibilities to maneuver fairly independently. By systematizing and analyzing the frequency and contents of Hellenistic decrees enacted by the councils and the demos of four East Greek city states, this study shows that the latter were democratically ruled, and the issues primarily concerned foreign relations. However, in the second half of the second century BC, polis decrees gradually decreased, ceasing altogether towards the end of the first century BC. A possible reason was the growing power of Rome and the establishment of the Roman province of Asia in 129 BC. Under a sole hegemon, the polis no longer had possibilities to set its own agenda. ... Product Description
The transition from feudalism to capitalism has occurred in many different ways and the variety of forms and methods of this transition is particularly evident in Southern Europe. Focusing on Greater Athens between 1948 and 1981--the crucial period of transition--the author explores the role of social classes in urban development in the cities of Mediterranean Europe. Based on extensive research, the book presents for the first time a history of the Greek urban popular classes during the twentieth century. The author challenges urban growth models based on the Anglo-American experience and convincingly presents her own theoretical framework combining economic and ecological considerations with Gramsci's theories of culture, spontaneity, and informality. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This book addresses cult and religion in the city of Corinth from the 4th to 7th centuries of our era. The work incorporates and synthesizes all available evidence, literary, archaeological and other. The interaction and conflict between Christian and non-Christian activity is placed into its urban context and seen as simultaneously existing and overlapping cultural activity. Late antique religion is defined as cult-based rather than doctrinally-based, and thus this volume focuses not on what people believed, but rather what they did. An emphasis on cult activity reveals a variety of types of interaction between groups, ranging from confrontational events at dilapidated polytheist cult sites, to full polysemous and shared cult activity at the so-called "Fountain of the Lamps". Non-Christian traditions are shows to have been recognized and viable through the sixth century. The tentative conclusion is drawn that a clear definition of "pagan" and "Christian" begins at an urban level with the Christian re-monumentalization of Corinth with basilicas. The disappearance of "pagan" cult is best attributed to the development of a new city socially and physically based on Christianity, rather than any purely "religious" development. ...
