5-0 out of 5 stars Best Greek Cookbook Ever
My late wife Diane, of British ancestry, bought Aphrodite's book as a way of better understanding and being able to prepare the Greek foods that I grew up with in our Greek-American home.As a home economist whose specialty area was foods, she dove right into the book, and was making foods that would melt any yayia's (grandmother's) heart.I have since purchased copies for my sons, so that they and their very American wives can carry on the good eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aphrodite is awesome!
My father is greek. my mother is not. she had no idea how to properly make greek food that was close to the way my grandmother would make it for my father. this book gives authentic greek recipes. wonderfully tasting andeasy to understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Immersion into Greek culture along with great recipes
Excellent recipes and a travelogue of Greece and the Greek Isles. I foolishly gave away my first copy so I had to order another.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Food of Greece
If you're looking for a cookbook with authentic Greek recipes like your grandmother (yiayia) used to make then I would highly recommend this one. As a Greek woman I was searching for an authentic Greek cookbook a few years back and I happily came across this one. I love the background history associated with the chapters and individual recipes and my Greek and non-Greek friends rave about the dishes I make from this book. I've even given it as gifts to others. As far as I'm concerned, this is the "bible" of all of my Greek cookbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greek cooking
This book gave a touch of Greek history with easy-to-follow recipes. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yaya Would Approve
I stumbled across this book in a bookstore down in Texas about four years ago and it's become my favorite Greek cookbook. The author collected these recipes back in the 70's when she went on a trip and traveled all over Greece. She would go to someone's house or out to a restaurant, and if the author liked the dish, she would ask the cook for the recipe. She took these recipes from all the different regions of Greece, put them together, and compiled this cookbook.I love this book because the dishes are very traditional like - the ones my yaya (grandmother) use to make. This book isn't about Greek food trying to be French, or anything else...but Greek.I also like the fact that the author gives the reader some background on the historical origins of the recipes. The one drawback of the book is that it doesn't have any pictures, so it might be difficult for a beginner or someone who is not familiar with Greek food.My suggestion them is to get a book with pictures so you can see what the dish is suppose to look like...but definitely use this book for the recipes."Kali Orexi"!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for a project I am doing.
I think this book is very helpful for people that want to know more about food and cooking in Greece. I read this book or looked through it for my greek project in school and found it very helpful to find recipies and info. ... Read more

This cookbook has great end product pictures and a few of in the process pictures.I really enjoyed the eggplant boats grilled recipe. The traditional Moussaka recipe isnt really like my mom makes, but it gives me a start to look for others online and compare. Culinaria Greece (Culinaria)my mom says culinaria greece is the better book, but this one does give alot background info on foods in greece as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes: easy, tasty and Greek
About once a year I need make something that is 'Greek', so I reach for this cookbook.(I got tired of borrowing the cookbook from friends so I bought my own and now between us we have 2).The recipes were collected from those used when the Greek church had a pot luck, so the recipes create generous servings. The recipes that I've made have been easy and tasty.Wide variety of recipes so if you need a recipe for a specific dish or are searching for a type of recipe it is probably in here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a try!
I bought this book recently b/c I love Greek food.So far I've only had the time to try two recipes -the moussaka & the baklava. Both were very, very good! The moussaka was not too hard to make except for the time involved to make each component (make the meat sauce, make the bechamel, roast the eggplant). The baklava, however, is time consuming due to all the puff pastry sheets you have to individually brush with butter.I'm sure it's just commonplace not just to this cookbook but the dessert itself. I'll just buy mine from now on! Overall, I recommend this book & look forward to trying more of its recipes. If they turn out to be just as good, I'll come back & give it five stars! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all cooks!
I'm so glad Marina Kamilatos has collected her family recipes in a book! I have eaten at her restaurant for years....it's a marvelous experience each time. She and her family care deeply about the food and it shows, herdishes sparkle with flavor and love. Whether you think you like Greek food or not, you will after you read this book...Marina will make you a believer! It's for both those who love Greek cuisine already and those who are new to it.

It's not just ingredients that make a meal and feed us, but family and history. Marina Kamilatos always welcomes everyone to her table as if they were family. The book is a treasure trove generations in the making. We aren't all lucky enough to have a Greek YiaYia (Grandmother). Marina generously shares hers with us!

Thank you Marina!

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic Greek cuisine
This is a delightful book. It includes a large collection of Cephallonian recipes as well as several impressive photographs, all of which were taken by the author herself. Lourdas (or Lourdata) is now one of the main tourist resorts on the island of Cephallonia and perhaps the most beautiful, as the photos show. This region of the Ionian island is also noted for its rich variations of Greek cuisine. For instance, the author (also a recognised chef with her own restaurant) includes her own family variation of 'skorthalia' (also called 'aliadha' in Cephallonia and Zante). There is also a welcome variety of recipes, reflecting the author's dual Cephallonian and Macedonian heritage.
One enjoyable part of the book is the author's information about her own family life as well as various traditions and customs related to certain recipes. For instance, the note that 'kourmbiethes'(the white sugar-covered sweets popular at Christmastime) are also used at weddings. This is one of the best Greek cookery books available and is beautifully illustrated and well-researched. It is written from the author's lifelong experience, leaarning recipes from her mother and grandmother and from her own experience as a noted chef. Even for those who love Greek food and who already have a few Greek cookbooks, then I am sure that there will be several recipes here that have not been printed elsewhere. One of the best books witten about Cephallonia in recent years!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lourdas: A Greek Family Cookbook
What a fabulous cookbook.I have many Greek cookbooks, but this is by far the best.It is not as thick as most cookbooks but includes all of the recipes that you would make at home. Also, all of the items on the menu at Marina's restaurant are included and absolutely foolproof and easy to make.I loved that she had stories about her family and growing up Greek as well as the recipes. It made me feel that I was sitting in her kitchen while she was cooking and listening to her stories about her family.Just wonderful cookbook. ... Product Description
Since prehistoric times, the sun-blessed Greek land generously offered its fortunate inhabitants an exceptionally good quality of produce, so that they could develop the nutritional need of the human body into a sensitive science and art. Gastronomy, one of the most significant manifestations of an entropic and ephemeral applied art, characterizes the ancient cultures of the great civilizations. Hence the French cuisine is a natural evolution, developing through the years from the roots of ancient Roman gastronomy; whereas the Chinese equivalent has its roots in the old Chinese Empire. But in both cases, the historic events and contacts with other nations and cultures enriched and widened the original gastronomic experience. These were either cultural contacts, which contributed new ideas and forms of cooking, or commercial contacts that introduced new products and flavours. This is also what happened with the ancient Greek cookery, which developed into Byzantine cooking owing to the Roman admixture, and later into the modern Greek cuisine, from the influences contributed by the Venetian and Turkish occupation of Greece. However, even today Greek cookery with its wonderful local varieties is basically the same as that described in ancient times by Homer and Hesiod and later in the Hellenistic period by Athenaeus. The sun's warm rays still caress the olives, vines and fruit The delicate soil of Greece and the mild climate give an especially subtle taste and fragrance to the vegetables, fruit, pulses, cereals and herbs. The Greek seas supply delicious fish and a large variety of other seafood. The meat and fowl, due to the traditional way of feeding, have kept their original taste. In quality, the Greek oil is superior to that of the other Mediterranean countries and Greek wines have a delicate taste and a subtle aroma. To all of the above you should add the warm Greek hospitality, and the joy of life, derived from the bright Greek landscape, and through the paths of tasty delicacies allow yourself to be led to the height of pleasure. ...
