I discovered this resource about ten years ago and I have used it ever since. It is a great way to introduce stuggling readers to the world of mythology. It is a great way for students to read about the Illiad and to introduce The Odyssey to students before reading the actual text.I teach high school and it works well with my ninth grade Languge Arts classes as an introduction to classic liturature. This book has maps, questions you can use for journal writings, activities and vocabulary. ... I have added to the "Story of the Seven Chiefs against Thebes" the
description of the single combat between Eteocles and Polynices, which
occurs in the _Phoenissae_ of Euripides. Some changes have been made in
the "Story of Ion" to make it more suitable for the purpose of this
book. Throughout the Stories compression and omission have been freely
used. I can only ask the indulgence of such of my readers as may be
familiar with the great originals of which I have given these pale and
ineffectual copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent "Cliff Notes" intro to Greek Myths
I wanted to have a little something to help me out as I read the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, and this book helped in that regard. The brief synopses of each mythic figure are done with whimsy and I quite enjoyed it all. It is presented in a style that would appeal to the short attention spans of today's kids, but I (a grown man) found it fun as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Educational
My daughter learned a lot from this entire series. We both love to sit down and read all of the Mytholopedia books together. The books aren't very big but they are packed with info and entertainment. There are a lot of fun illustrations and the writing is clever and current. These books are a great way to get kids interested in Mythology.

This book is part of a great series that explains the complicated family tree of the Greek Gods.As a teacher, I bought the complete series to supliment the materials that I already had to help my students. 5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing mythology collection
I suppose that some of the work in this book, one of a 13 volume set written between 1916 and 1932 (reprinted in the 1960s, has been changed by more recent scholarship, but there is still nothing to equal this fantastic achievement. The set includes not only the more familiar myths such as Greek and Roman, but pretty well succeeds in its goal to include all of humanity. The text is extremely detailed but very readable; none of the turgid prose so often associated with academia. The volumes contain numerous illustrations, both in the text and as plates (mostly black & white.)
One of the most useful parts of the set is the final volume, an extremely detailed index, which allows the reader to pursue a theme, or even a topic as specific as the significance of belts, across all the volumes. The individual volumes do not have their own indices, but the tables of contents are fairly detailed. The books appear to have been issued without dust jackets.

From the strong-arm heroics of Heracles, to the trickery of the Trojan Horse, from the seductions of Circe the sorceress, to the terrors of the Cyclops and Minotaur...

First published in 1934, Gods, Heroes and Men of Ancient Greece has become one of the most popular, enduring-and captivating-retellings of the ancient myths for modern readers. Rouse delighted his students at the Perse School in Cambridge, England, with a conversational style and childlike wonder that made the legends come alive-a rare storytelling gift that continues to engage young and old alike. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to greek mythology
I think this is a good starting book to engage people, like myself that are just beginning to get interested in mythology.Obviously some stories are severely shortened in order to include many stories, but this was a good read and movtivated me to go further--I am re-reading the Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell now.

2-0 out of 5 stars GODS, HEROES AND MEN OF ANCIENT GREECE by W. H. D. Rouse
Gods, Heroes and Men of Ancient Greece: Mythology's Great Tales of Valor and Romance is a 1934 book of Greek mythology by W. H. D. Rouse, who was known for pioneering the Direct Method of teaching Greek and Latin in Britain. This book contains the Greek creation myths, the tales of Heracles, Jason, Theseus, and Perseus, and miscellaneous smaller stories. It is geared to a young adult audience.

Gods, Heroes and Men of Ancient Greece has been heavily edited for content and length. The book is only 200 pages, which isn't enough space for half of these stories. Some of the tales are completely butchered; there's so much left out of Odysseus's story, for example, that one wonders why Rouse bothered with it in the first place. At times, Rouse rushes through stories and recounts events in a dry, history book way that completely robs these tales of their charm and appeal.

Rouse doesn't tell the stories in the most coherent fashion - not that the reader can't follow what is going on, but Rouse often leaves out characters' motivations for doing things. He will trudge through a pedestrian narrative only to omit some of the most interesting parts of many of these stories, as well as explanations for why or how things happened. Frequently the reader will reach the part of a story where he expects the payoff, only for Rouse to say, as he often does, "I can't tell you about that now."

This book includes commentary from the author in the text (example: "You see, Achilles and King Agamemnon had both lost their temper. I do not make any excuse for either of them; I am just telling the story."). Few of his observations are particularly astute or clever, and almost none of them would be necessary if he had done a better job telling the story.

In the best books of mythology, a writer breathes life into the ancient stories. Rouse, conversely, has made them dry and tedious. There's no real need to be lenient here because there are a million books on Greek mythology, for every target audience, and it shouldn't be difficult to find a better one than Gods, Heroes and Men of Ancient Greece, which is frustratingly poor.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent translation, with one big flaw
This book serves very well as a translation and commentary for the Catasterismi of Pseudo-Eratosthenes and the Poeticon Astronomicon of Hyginus.I would recommend this book to the scholar and archeoastronomer.

However, reading from the text, it is clear that this book is primarily a labor of translation rather than Astronomy. In order to identify stars, Condos compared the texts of Pseudo-Eratosthenes and Hyginus to that of Ptolemy's Almagest. If she could not positively comfirm the identity of a star by cross-referencing it through Ptolemy, she simply left it unidentified in her translation (designating it with a ?).A clear example of the problem with this came when she tried to identify the three stars in Orion's head as lambda, ?, and ?.In this case, if she had a simple star atlas in front of her (like Norton's), she would have been able to easily identify the two unknown stars as phi-1 and phi-2.The sky hasn't changed that much since the time of the Greeks and an atlas might have been helpful to Condos in her work

So, yes, this is a recommendable book, but keep in mind that Condos' translation was made through referencing ancient texts alone without a proper study of the actual sky and stars upon which the texts were based. This flaw isn't fatal, but it is significant enough for me to dock one star and recommend that the reader have an atlas of his or her own to reference when using this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More scholarly than entertaining.
Star Myths is an excellent sourcebook - for a serious student. If you're looking for entertaining and engaging writing, look elsewhere. If you want a learned (if brief) overview of how the Greek and Roman constellations were named, by whom, and what stars are contained therein, then you've got the right volume!

Theony Condos, the translator, draws mostly on two prime sources; Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy), attributed to Hyginus; and Catasterismi (The Constellations), by Eratothenes. In the introduction, Condos discusses the backgrounds of Hyginus and Eratothenes, their influences and sources, and some supporting and relating works by their contemporaries and historical peers. Moving on from the (mercifully!) brief introduction, Condos procedes directly to the heart of the matter, and launches into an alphebetized listing of the major 'western' constellations, each with a idealized line-drawing of the constellation and its namesake image, a brief discussion of the associated legend(s) as discussed in the primary works, and a translators commentary. Primary stars, where possible, are indicated by their symbols (rather than spelling out their names) in the text. This last I found most frustrating, for while a serious scholar of Latin and Greek would recognize these symbols immediately, I found myself struggling to interpret them.

This book comes with fairly extensive end notes and appendicies, useful to the student looking for more insight. While I find this volume to be useful in a limited way, it's really aimed towards the more serious student, and not to the casual sky-watcher. If you want an education on the origins of the Western European constellations, this is a good place to start, though it's not the ultimate word on the subject. However, if you want to identify that intriguing cluster of bright lights in the nighttime sky, you'll probably want to go elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars recommendable book
This is a very interesting and readable book. I hope to read HYGINUS' "The MYTHS of Hyginus" once translated by M. Grant in 1960. I think the latter is more interesting to read for the fans of Greco-Romanmythology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Retelling of Ovid's Metamorphosis
Interestingly, one of the great sources of Greek mythology comes from the Roman poet Ovid's epic poem, "The Metamorphosis".Ovid's examines his theme of transformation by retelling two hundred and fifty myths.By the time Ovid composed his great poem, the Greek cosmology had almost been entirely adopted into the official Roman religion. One of the main critiques of this book is that Mary Pope Osbourne has used the Roman names for the Greek gods. This only makes sense to me since Pope Osbourne is engaged in a retelling of Ovid's Metamorphosis. Granted the names are bit confusing but not so much that the confusion cannot be overcome with a little work.

Mary Pope Osbourne has become a famous children's author because of her Magic Treehouse series of books. She understands her audience and has crafted her mythological stories to fit her audience's reading level. As a parent, I thought the book was well written and I found it to be quite enjoyable. For anyone who enjoys this book, I would highly recommended Mary Pope Osbourne's mulitple volume retelling of the Odyssey. Both the Greeks myths and the Odyssey are foundational stories which every educated person should be familiar with. It is never too early to introduce these stories to children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disgraceful!
I was handed this book by a fellow teacher to use in a Greek Mythology Unit. Too bad all of the names are those of the ROMAN gods and goddesses. What was this "reteller" thinking? I would look for a different book so that you don't totally confuse the two cultures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series of mythology books!
Our whole family loved this book. The illustrations are beautiful and provoking. The stories are so well written and interesting. Mary Pope Osborne is amazing! My kids are learning about Greek mythology and begging me to do it. We also liked her Norse mythology book. I wish she would write a similar book of Bible stories, so many of the Bible story books are boring and insipid.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Kid Would Enjoy This
... but some adults might get really annoyed.I was drawn immediately to this book when I saw the title.Greek myths were a favorite of mine as a child and I think all children should be acquainted with them.In many ways, this book is very good, in particular with the inclusion of the explanation of modern words of Greek origin. What a great thing to add to a book! The first thing to annoy me, though, was the illustration of King Midas. The artwork in this book is beautifully executed.Howell has a sort of Pre-Raphaelite thing going down, but with what must be an unintentionally funny kink here and there.Midas is pictured crouched down in cartoon-y horror.I moved on.Hey, no wonder Atalanta won all those races if the men were burdened with those heavy bronze helmets and shields.Minerva has the hair and supercilious look of a friend of mine who had a drag act.Wait a minute ... Minerva?I looked at the cover again. This was supposed to be Greek myths!I can see the problem: if you are using Ovid as a base, you get the Roman names and "Favorite Myths of the Greeks and Romans" is too unwieldy. This turned the whole deal sour for me.
Despite the Osborne authorship (which had so heartened me at first glance), my experience with this book went rapidly downhill. And it's a shame, because it is a beautiful book that some kids would treasure all their lives.I wish I could pay compliments to the writing, but I was ready to red-line the least little thing once I got started.Proserpina (who seems to be running without moving a hair) mourns the loss of her life with her mother and refuses to eat, but I didn't find that in the story. That's why that one (or three, depending on the version) pomegranate seed gets her in trouble. If you eat the food of the Underworld, you must stay.I'm left with some questions, too.How exactly was Midas so hospitable to Bacchus?I feel like I've walked in on the middle of some conversation.
One of my coworkers thinks I should get over this. There is just so much good in this book. The stories flow well one to the other, sometimes referring back to a previous story. But if you're an old fuddy-duddy like me, a stickler for minutiae, a veritable pain in the posterior ... where was I?Oh, don't listen to me.Go ahead and buy the book.Or better yet, get it from the library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Uses Roman names instead of Greek names...
"The myths in this collection use their Roman names..." -Quoted from page 71 of book.

Um...why does this book use Roman names if it is supposed to be a collection of Greek Myths?Very confused.

I think that "D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths" is a better book of the same caliber. ... Read more

Product Description
The ancient Greeks worshiped a complex group of deities, weaving their characters into timeless tales of love, heroism, and intrigue. Plays, poems, paintings, and sculptures commemorating these tales have survived for centuries. Even as world religions and scientific knowledge have evolved, bringing with them new beliefs and understanding of the world, the ancient Greek tales continue to provide a basic foundation for Western thought and sharp insight to the human psyche. The virgin goddess Artemis ruled the hunt, preferring the quiet wilderness to society. As an immortal, she lived a life mortal Greek women never could one that kept her away from men and marriage. Men (and women) who crossed the boundaries that protected her virginity were punished, often with their lives. But Artemis s boundaries also protected Greek women during childhood and childbirth. As a virgin warrior, women prayed to her to keep them safe when a husband could not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Considered "Essential Reading" for Study of Classical Mythology
I shopped for this book on Amazon because it is included in the "Essential Reading" part of the bibliography for "Classical Mythology", one of the Teaching Company's courses. The lecturer, Professor Elizabeth Vandiver, U. of Maryland, describes the work as follows: "A clear, concise introduction for the general reader.Contains chapters on definitions of myth, approaches to myth, the appearances of Greek myths in literature, and the nature of Greek heroes. An excellent place to begin any study of classical myth or of theories about myth in general."Professor Vandiver's course, by the way, is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars G.S. Kirk provides analysis, not fun
As a doctoral student, I would not recommend anything written by Kirk to anybody but an academic. What Kirk does is to deconstruct, in the technical sense, theories of myth in the agora that is the Greek pantheon, explaining how no theory can completely map upon the confusing state of Greek religious thought and text.It is not perfect but nevertheless sufficient. The reader would do himself well to reread Derrida prior to attempting Kirk's formulation of Greek myth.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the other hand . . .
Although I've not read this book, after reading the vituperative attackabove I feel I must mention that no less a critic than classics scholarBernard Knox (himself as enjoyable to read as he is informative) hascompared Kirk's book to Dodds' "epic-making" _Greeks and theIrrational_, saying of Kirk's work in myth that it "presents the samestimulating combination of professional expertise and newperspectives."Coming from Knox, this is high praise indeed.

Ifyou're looking for a quick "who did what to whom," you'd best gowith Edith Hamilton. But if you want an insightful and informed adultjourney into the character and substance of myth, perhaps this is the bookyou seek.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to have fun, don'tread this book.
I found this book highly unenjoyable. It was written well, if you aretaking a doctorate level course, otherwise good luck. If you expect tolearn what a Greek Myth is, Kirk will confuse the hell out of you!!! Hedoes an excellent job of never giving his own opinions, but would ratherbelittle the thoughts of previous authors on the nature and beliefs ofGreek Myths. Sorry Kirk, but I would have to give you two thumbs down forease of reading, comprehension, and explanations on the Greek Myths. ... Read more

Product Description
The seventy-two entries in this volume explore, among other topics, the history, geography, and religion of Greece, Plato's mythology and philosophy, the powers of marriage in Greece, heroes and gods of war in the Greek epic, and origins of mankind in Greek myths.Ancient Egyptian cosmology, anthropology, rituals, and religion--closely linked to Greek mythology--are also discussed. "In a world that remains governed by powerful myths, we must deepen our understanding of ourselves and others by considering more carefully the ways in which the mythological systems to which we cling and social institutions and movements to which we are committed nourish each other.Yves Bonnefoy's Mythologies not only summarizes the progress that has already been made toward this end, but also lays the foundation for the difficult work that lies ahead."--Mark C. Taylor, New York Times Book Review"The almost 100 contributors combine, with characteristic precision and élan, the arts of science and poetry, of analysis and translation. The result is a treasury of information, brilliant guesswork, witty asides, and revealing digressions. This is a work of genuine and enduring excitement."--Thomas D'Evelyn, Christian cience Monitor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars WORST SHIPPING IN THE WORLD!!!!!!! (read whole review)
I purchased the book on 12/16 and I have a five page report due 1/8. They send it two, TWO, weeks after I bought it on 1/2. They tell me it is going to come two weeks later. Now I cant even use it for my report. This is the worst shipping ever!!!!!!!!! I don't recommend buying from them when you have a fast report to do. I could of got it from ebay and got it three weeks faster. I recommend going to barnes and nobles for this book for a cheaper price and more efficiency. They also never respond to your emails so don't even try sending one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible...insightful...inspiring...
I could attempt to write a review of this work, but
it is so rich, satisfying, informative, and inspiring
a volume that I would rather quote from the back
cover, which seems to me to sum up the perfections of
this compilation.
"GREEK AND EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGIES features seventy-two
articles, reproduced in full [in English translation]
with illustrations, from the acclaimed two-volume
MYTHOLOGIES. Written by distinguished scholars, the
articles explore a fascinating variety of themes and
topics. The section on Greek myth surveys mythologies
of creation, power, war, death, and sexuality; articles
on gods, goddesses and their cults bring fresh perspectives
to our understanding of religion in Greek societies. The
discussions of myth in Egypt are equally wide ranging --
from cosmology, anthropology, ritual, and religion to the
cults of Isis and the fate of the Egyptian gods from the
Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
"The articles offer illuminating examples of the working
of myth in cultures past and present -- how we create, use,
and are guided by systems of myth to answer fundamental
questions about ourselves and our world: Where do we come
from? Who are we? How shall we live? What happens when we
die?
"Building on perspectives developed by such scholars as
Claude Levi-Strauss and Georges Dumezil, and drawing on
such diverse sources as the history of religions,
anthropology, archaeology, literature, and linguistics,
the contributors define a new approach to the study of
myth in society.Rather than simply cataloging gods
and symbols, the articles in MYTHOLOGIES explore the
complex working of myth in past societies and in our lives
today."

The "Introduction: The Interpretation of Mythology"
is incredibly rich and informative. It includes the
essays (never dry or dull! -- always extremely interesting
and inspiring) on: Toward a Definition of Myth. The

Interpretation of Mythos: Nineteenth and Twentieth-
Century Theories. Myth and Writing: The Mythographers.
Prehistoric Religion. "Nomadic Thought" and Religious
Action.
The essays in the rich Part 2 section on Greek mythology
contain such topics (which really interested me) as:
Myth in the Greek City: The Athenian Politics of Myth.
Philosophy and Mythology, from Hesiod to Proclus.Plato's
Mythology and Philosophy. The Neoplatonists and Greek
Myths.Greek Cosmogonic Myths. And these are only some
of the many.
The Part 3 section on Egypt contains such topics as:
Egyptian Cosmogony.Egyptian Anthropology.The Divine
and the Gods in Ancient Egypt.Egyptian Rituals.Death
in Egyptian Religion.Meroitic Religion. The Cults of
Isis among the Greeks and in the Roman Empire.Isis
the Magician, in Greek and Coptic Papyruses. The Fate
of the Egyptian Gods from the Middle Ages to the
Eighteenth Century. And that is the full list of
titles in that section.
All in all, this work is even more stimlating and
insightful than Robert Graves, and I would even put
it far ahead of THE LAROUSSE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MYTHOLOGY,
which I also own and use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars responding to previous writer
Im assuming you did horrible on your essay due to grammatical errors you typed in your reply on this book. What a shame.I am a senior in college, and was able to use this source for a paper I did. This particular book is for elementary grade level students, and yet I was able to gain insight from it's pages. As far as the writer checking her creditials, maybe you should check...?All you have to do is type her name in google, and all your answers lye there.

I bid you good day... moron ( I mean that in the nicest way possible:))

I really think that tis publisher needs to get her licensechecked to be a writer but hey thats only my opinion. Bye, Bye. Anyway Ireally don't think that this is important but you see I got this report andit gotta be done by friday the 26th. Well I dont wanna run up your time soI'll be seeing ya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever modern introduction to Greek gods
Most art historians describe the Greek gods and goddesses as the super heros of their time. Each had its own image easily recognized on ancient pottery and sculpture. In this comic book presentation of the stories of the Greek gods children can enjoy the stories in a current format with which they are familiar. The stories are well presented in amusing ways. My 3 and 4 year old granddaughters think this book is great. The stories are not too long nor are they complicated. Highly recommend for children of young through adult ages. A fabulous intro to the myths.

5-0 out of 5 stars When it's all Greek to your child
Does your child look at you blankly when you mention "Pandora's Box"?Do they think that "Hercules" is a Disney-originated character? Even the most stubborn young reader will get a kick out of this comic book version of some of the Greek myths, and you will too when you read the hilarious little speech boxes of the cartoon drawings.

This book introduces the following myths in a very basic bare-bones format, but without sparing the gory bits:

Pandora's Box - starring Prometheus, Zeus, Epimetheus and Pandora

Arion and the Dolphins - starring Periander and Arion, with a cast of a couple dozen extras and some dolphins

Orpheus and Eurydice - otherwise known as "Don't Look Back", featuring Orpheus and Eurydice of course, plus Charon, Cerberus, Pluto and Persephone

The Twelve tasks of Heracles (also known as Hercules) - this story also has Hera, Eurystheus, some Amazons, and a lot of beasts and monsters. Some animals were reportedly injured during the making of this story.

Daedalus and Icarus - also with Athene and King Minos

Perseus and the Gorgon's Head - Acrisius, Danae, Perseus, Dictys, Polydectes, Athene, Hermes, plus the all-girl groups of Gorgons, Grey Ones and Ocean Nymphs.

Theseus and the Minotaur - King Minos, Theseus, Aegeus, Ariadne, and a Minotaur in a labyrinth

Arachne versus Athene - A weave-off to end all weave-offs

Illustrated in vivid color and injected with humor, this book may not have all the myths, but will be enough to develop your child's interest in mythology. You can also make a note to try the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series (young adult fiction), which also introduces Greek mythology.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREEK MYTHS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
I LIKED THIS BOOK - I ORDERED IT FOR MY SEVEN YEAR OLD AND READ IT TO HIM. THE CARTOON FORMAT IS FUN AND THE TEXT IS TRUE TO THE ORIGINAL MYTHS. SOME OF THE HUMOUR WAS OVER HIS HEAD, BUT IF YOU STICK TO THE TEXT AND LEAVE OUT THE DIALOGUE "BUBBLES" THE STORIES ARE WELL TOLD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
My daughter is 10, and loves this book. Her Grandmother gave it to her when she was about 5.She reads it with her Grandmother whenever possible. I notice it has helped with her reading a great deal. She will "act" out the characters while they read and gets very into the stories. Her favorite is Pandora's Box. The stories are a great educational tool, she is learning lessons and doesn't even realize it. She will ask questions and want to know more about different subjects brought up in the stories.
I recommend this book highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son LOVES this!
When I first saw this book, before giving it to my son, I didn't think he would care for the format of it.Boy, was I wrong. I guess 5 year old boys have different tastes than their moms. We had to read this every night for months! Some of the comic strips are kind of gross, but of course, he loved that too. If your child is interested in Hercules, he or she will probably LOVE learning about all the other heroes (and villains) in Greek mythology. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more
