Product Description
An illustrated history of 170 years of Arctic exploration and its effects on indigenous peoples.

Ultima Thule is the terrible and yet fantastic story of European and American exploration in the polar north. Based on excerpts from the explorers' logs counterbalanced by Inuit testimony, it brings to life both sides of the clash that arose when white men arrived in the Far North, dreaming of conquest and believing that they brought with them a civilization superior to that of the indigenous peoples they found. Today, the outlook for the Inuit and the polar environment is bleak: the people and their landscape are in danger of disappearing for good. But according to Jean Malaurie, the situation is not altogether without hope.

Heavily illustrated with period photographs, engravings, artifacts, and drawings, the book gives the readers the impression of having an entire museum of North Pole history in their hands. 650 color and black-and-white photographs. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume in the Long-Term Ecological Research Network Series would present the work that has been done and the understanding and database that have been developed by work on climate change done at all the LTER sites. Global climate change is a central issue facing the world, which is being worked on by a very large number of scientists across a wide range of fields. The LTER sites hold some of the best available data measuring long term impacts and changes in the environment, and the research done at these sites has not previously been made widely available to the broader climate change research community. This book should appeal reasonably widely outside the ecological community, and because it pulls together information from all 20 research sites, it should capture the interest of virtually the entire LTER research community. ... Product Description
Using an Earth Model of Intermediate Complexity, experiments are performed during the Holocene to study the seasonality of precipitation in Greenland, the effect on the interpretation of ice core signals, and possible mechanisms that can account for the sudden decrease in temperature seen in ice cores from Greenland 8.2 kyr ago.Throughout the Holocene orbital parameters have changed resulting in an increase of the meridional gradient of the annual mean solar forcing. These changes influence the seasonality of Greenland precipitation. The isotope signal in ice cores are precipitation weighted, meaning that a signal is only recorded when it snows, and a change in the seasonality of precipitation will thus cause a bias in the signal.?O18 records from Greenland ice cores show a large excursion 8.2 kyr ago. It is believed that the event is caused by freshwater discharges originating from the melting of the Laurentide ice sheet.Orbital and freshwater forcings are built into the circulation model ECBilt-CLIO, and the results will give an indication of the ice core bias and the effects on regional and global climate. ... Product Description
Ice calving or iceberg calving is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often preceded by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 200 feet high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous wakes. The wakes formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than two miles. These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are infrequent and not often observed. Etymologically, calving is cognatic with calving as in birthing a calf. ... Read more

Product Description
The change in global climate is one of the highlyspeculative aspects in the Northern Hemipsphere, especially the onset of glaciation. Advances andretreats of grounded ice sheets during glacial- interglacial times play an important role in termsof the deposition of large sediment deposits.Depositional patterns on the continental slope andrise reflect interactions between the effects of icesheet fluctuations, mass transport processes andbottom currents. A for the first time applied seismostratigraphy onthe Northeast Greenland margin made it possible todifferentiate between glacial (younger than MiddleMiocene) and pre-glacial (older than Middle Miocene)sediment units. Glacial advances and retreats appearnot to have been synchronous along the continentalmargin. Therefore, either north of 70°N theextension of the shelf by glacial erosion seems tobe more intensive like on the Southeast Greenlandmargin or the onset of glaciation started earlier inthe north than in the south. This study demonstrates the interaction betweensediment accumulation, climatic changes and changesin ocean circulation. ...
