Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Acatenango is a stratovolcano in Guatemala, close to the city of Antigua. The volcano has two peaks, Pico Mayor (Highest Peak) and Yepocapa (3,880 m) which is also known as Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters). Acatenango is joined with Volcán de Fuego and collectively the volcano complex is known as La Horqueta. The Fuego-Acatenango massif comprises a string of five or more volcanic vents along a north-south trend that is perpendicular to that of the Central American arc in Guatemala. From north to south known centers of volcanism are Ancient Acatenango, Yepocapa, Pico Mayor de Acatenango, Meseta, and Fuego. Volcanism along the trend stretches back more than 200,000 years. Although many of the centers have been active contemporaneously, there is a general sequence of younger volcanism, from north to south along the trend. ... Read more

Product Description

Stretching across southern Mexico, northern Guatemala, and Belize, the Maya Forest, or Selva Maya, constitutes one of the last large blocks of tropical forest remaining in North and Central America. Home to Mayan-speaking people for more than 5,000 years, the region is also uncommonly rich in cultural and archaeological resources.

Timber, Tourists, and Temples brings together the leading leading biologists, social scientists, and conservationists working in the region to present in a single volume information on the intricate social and political issues, and the complex scientifc and management problems to be resolved there. Following an introductory chapter that presents GIS and remote sensing data, the book:

  • Considers perspectives on managing forest resources and the forestry and conservation policies of each nation
  • Examines efforts by communities to manage their forest resources
  • Explains the connections between resource conservation and use by local people
  • Highlights research projects that integrate baseline biological research with impact assessments
  • Explains the need to involve local people in conservation effort.

Timber, Tourists, and Temples explores methods of supporting the biological foundation of the Maya Forest and keeping alive that unique and diverse ecosystem. While many areas face similar development pressures, few have been studied as much or for as long as the Maya Forest. The wealth of information included in this pathbreaking work will be valuable not only for researchers involved with the Maya Forest but for anyone concerned with the protection, use, and management of tropical forest ecosystems throughout the world. ... From the author: Landscape interpretation, or "reading" the landscape, is one of cultural geography's standard practices. Relatively little attention, however, has been paid to reading landscapes transformed by insurgency movements or civil wars. Those landscapes can tell us a great deal about past and present political and social relationships as well as continuing power struggles. Guatemala presents a complicated postwar landscape "text" in which the struggle for power continues by many means and media, including how the war is portrayed on memorials, and in which the Catholic Church and the military/state are the two main competing powers. This essay explores some of the images and the text presented in Guatemala's postconflict landscape through contrasting landmarks and memorials associated with the country's thirty-six-year-long civil war that formally ended in 1996. Keywords: Catholic Church, Guatemala, memorials, military, postconflict landscape.

Excerpt: Bilbao is a Mesoamerican archaeological site about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the modern town of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa in the Escuintla department of Guatemala. The site lies among sugar plantations on the Pacific coastal plain and its principal phase of occupation is dated to the Classic Period. Bilbao was a major centre belonging to the Cotzumalhuapa culture with its main occupation dating to the Late Classic (c. AD 600800). Bilbao is the former name of the plantation on which the site lies and from which it has derived its name. Bilbao lies of the outskirts of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, situated approximately 370 metres (1,210 ft) above mean sea level. The archaeological sites of Bilbao, El Baúl and El Castillo were all parts of the same urban centre that extended over about 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi). This extended urban area is known as the Cotzumalhuapa Nuclear Zone by archaeologists and Bilbao lies in the sourthernmost part of this area. The urban growth of modern Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa has expanded to the edge of the monumental architecture of the site. The dominant geographical feature close to the Cotzumalhaupa Nuclear Zone is the Volcán de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, its crater rising to an altitude of 3,835 metres (12,582 ft) above mean sea level at only a distance of about 21 kilometres (13 mi) from Bilbao itself. The activity of the volcano must have impacted upon the population of the site, which must regularly have suffered from falls of volcanic ash, affecting agriculture, transport routes and perishable dwellings. Bilbao was occupied since the Preclassic and was the most important site dating to the Preclassic within what became in later perio...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24537733 ... Read more

    Product Description
Gender is central to the organization and functioning of Guatemalan society. In many Guatemalan communities, men work within the public and political domain while indigenous women's participation in rural highland communities is usually identified in the context of community development. Spanish-language illiteracy, family power relations, and a machismo culture have limited or EXCLUDED the public and political participation of women. At the extreme, Guatemalan women are targeted for murder and mutilation in rural and urban areas -- a phenomenon called femicide/feminicide -- simply for being women 'out of place'. In the mainly rural department of Huehuetenango, something else is going on. The organization Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de las Mujeres Huehuetecas (ADIMH) is working towards the INCLUSION of women into the public domain for the betterment of their communities through literacy, education, health, and production projects. In this book, we document the struggles and successes of Huehuetenango women, Huehuetecas, as they work towards community rebuilding after the 36-year internal armed conflict. Based upon our observations we agree with the participants that women's empowerment, as a form of community development, is integral for the future of their communities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading the book was like taking a mini-trip
At first I was put off by the organization of the book --- three separate parts on two pages. But I learned to read each section through to its end, and then go back and read the second part, and then the third part Then I had the broad overview.Since I'm a sedentary older woman, I would never have had the experiences these three young men had, so I enjoyed, with them, their unexpected adventures. They wrote well and I was pleased with their research on the various sites.I hope they do take another trip to Mesoamerica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An LDS guide to Mesamerica is a travelogue well done and executed by three laymen who travel through Mesoamerican ruins to point out the parallels to the Book of Mormon.

Despite being laymen, they carefully weave in the evidence from current scholarship to point to the parallels in the book of Mormon. They also weave in the trials and tribulations of their travels which serve to warn other fellow travelers of the pitfalls and the truth on the ground not found in travel books. The anecdotes are also very amusing to the armchair explorer. By dividing each chapter into three parts - how we got there, what is there, and the parallels to the Book of Mormon - they skillfully explain all the things the readers want to know. This is definitely the volume for the general reader to read to get a good feel for the topic. One waits eagerly for the promised next volumes. ... Read more
