A "must have" for the recent graduate
What They Don't Teach You in College is a Must Have for any college graduate. It's a shame that personal finance is not a required course in High School or College, every year thousands of students graduate and head out into the real world with little or no knowledge of what to do next.

This book is is a great handbook to have, it walks you through getting your first job, understanding contracts, managing finances, buying a car, renting/buying a home, insurance, etc. It basically covers everything you need to know from age 18 to 30.

If you want the student in your life to hit the ground running this is the perfect gift for them.

Learning from the Children
This review originally appeared on the Englewood Review of Books and my blog, Jacob's Café, and was made possible by a complimentary copy from the publisher.

As a child psychologist with a particular passion and speciality in spirituality, particularly spiritual formation, I was very excited to review Catherine Stonehouse and Scottie May's Listening to Children on the Spiritual Journey. This book discusses the results from multiple projects exploring childhood Christian spirituality. Before thinking it may be boring, allow me to assure you that it's not. While it could definitely be used in an academic setting (the publishing house emphasizes that), it really is meant for laity, not academics.

I recently began a spirituality group as part of my organization's child partial hospitalization program for psychiatric problems. This book was helpful in developing some activities to initiate discussion on spiritual topics. However, it really is meant for a parents and church-based ministries rather than therapists. And it is focused on Christian spirituality. So if you're looking for ways to explore the spirituality of atheist children, this book is probably not what you're looking for (although I would also argue it's techniques could be altered for the appropriate spiritual context).

Stonehouse and May begin their tome by beautifully introducing their passion for developing child spirituality and discussing their research methodology. It's detailed enough to moderately satisfy those of us with a critical eye on methodology (their more detailed appendix helps), but does not get bogged down in academic technicalities so as to lose readers of the intended audience. They then wisely move into beginning to tell some of the stories of kids' responses to various prompts. I think it was wise for them to begin this way because it emphasizes that children can and do talk about deep spiritual concepts... when given the opportunity. I can vouch for this in the groups I have run. In fact, as I discussed on my blog, I think children are just as sophisticated as many adults. What often seems to happen is that we, as a society, do not develop children's spiritualities, so as adults, we are essentially stunted at the childhood developmental level.

Stonehouse and May do not make this argument, but I saw continued evidence for this as I read the stories. The child participants are often more willing to ask questions than most adults. They are also able to more vibrantly verbalize their experiences with God and Christ. In fact, their desire to truly be with God far surpasses the desire of most adults I know (including myself).

From this foundation, they continue to tell stories, weaving in various techniques to stimulate spiritual discussion and also challenge children to grow. These are the techniques that are both useful for research and are incredibly practical for use in homes, churches, youth groups, schools, etc. At the core of many of the practices is a concept of reflective engagement, the idea of letting the children meditate and contemplate spiritual ideas for themselves. Some are done with others, some individually. While some people may think children may not be able to do this, Stonehouse and May's anecdotes passionately prove otherwise.

While this book is intended to help people develop children's spirituality, I think it has just as much potential (if not more potential) to help form adult's spirituality. In fact, several of the reflective engagement practices are conducted with the whole family or in dialogue with adults. It is meant to let everyone experience God together, in a true corporate worship experience. And then seeing the innocent and pure love of Christ cannot not affect the adult hearts that have been hardened by cynicism, pain, and suffering. Truly, we will learn from the children. ... Its a PAMPHLET! 68 pages of large type print.
I am sorry, but some of the prices for this thing are absurd. I paid $8 for it and I feel ripped off.Even if it is a fairly informative pamphlet.

interesting read
this book was recommended to me by one of my mentors at my company. i wish i would have gotten this book BEFORE i started my first corporate job. lots of really interesting information and advice. great read for a soon-to-graduate or recent college grad.

Great book, commond sesnse summed up
most of this book is common sense but it really sums it all up in 1 convenient place.Most person is going to know more then half the topics in the book but the other half can really help you along.I'm 26 and i wish i would have read this when i was in college.Get this for anybody in there senior year of college i highly recommend it.it transcends many degrees and professions.

Misleading at times
I couldn't believe this book went on for several pages about how to write a perfect thank you letter after an interview, but spent only a paragraph covering office romances. The author said in a few sentences it is basically OK to have an office relationship if you're smart about it. What?! Chapter one of every book about office politics should advise against going down that path. Another part I didn't care for was in regards to after work gatherings. The author explained that when alcohol is present, you dont want to get really drunk, since you can do that with your friends anyway. At the same time though, you dont want to be the person who never has an alcoholic beverage or two. The part about not getting wasted should be more than obvious to any 20-something college graduate. The immature reassurance that you can get trashed with friends outside of work should be comforting to those who didnt already realize this. I was confused why she advised readers to have a couple drinks no matter what at these events. Since when is looking cool around coworkers worth risking a DUI? On a positive note, I did appreciate the section about looking for hints of employee satisfaction before taking a new job.

Excellent Book
Having just published a book on the subject of "God's will," entitled Is That You Lord?, with Evangelical Press, I was eager to read Bloomfield's book, by the same publisher on the same subject. I am happy to report that our books dovetail nicely. While somewhat different approaches were taken, we arrived at the same conclusion--that Scripture alone is sufficient for guidance in the life of the believer.

One helpful insight not found in my book is an excellent critique of Wayne Grudem's New Testament prophecy theory. Grudem has taught, and Christendom has accepted, that during the New Testament era (aka the church age) God is still giving prophecies. However, unlike those given during Old Testament dispensations those prophecies may be partially inaccurate and/or misunderstood by the prophet. Bloomfield does a fine job poking holes in this theory.

Overall, What the "Bible Teaches About Guidance" is an excellent book, thoroughly biblical and to the point. ... Read more

Great book on the Nuts and Bolts of Comedy
This is a great book. Don't judge it by the cover photo.

Written by a working comic in London, it's understandable to Americans. The principles hold true even if I haven't heard of all the British comics.

He explains how jokes work. His key insight is the punchline comes as an afterthought.

Logan has lots of exercises for generating jokes. It's also good as therapy. Turning positives to negatives and vice versa.

I'm rereading it for the 3rd time. I learn something each time.

Great Book for Taking Action
Higher Education isn't a replacement for inspiration feel-good books; this book is in a completely new class, combining motivation with real steps someone can take to improve their life situation. Jedding's work is all about taking action to make your career and life goals become reality. I've found that the points of advice he gives are things I've learned myself over the course of several years. It would have been awesome to learn all of this right after graduation! Personally, I found the career and perspective advice in Higher Education to be most helpful. I didn't connect as much with the advice on parents and relationships. Stylistically, it felt a little lacking on research, but I still think this is a must-buy for new grads. It's so much more than just another motivation book.

Friendly Useful Wisdom--A Rare Find.
It's not every day, month, or year that we come across such smart, practical advice for getting our lives in gear. Jedding is like a new friend, someone who understands the confusion of confronting the choices we are called upon to make as we set out on our path. The stress affecting today's youth is not the same as generations before. The biggest worry concerning most is the amount of debt they will be in. There are other concerns that are just as important, such as, how do know if I'm making the right career choice? Will I make enough money to pay back my loans? What can I do to make sure that I don't end up sleeping on someone's couch for the rest of my life?

Ken is a life coach who has some special insight for today's young adults. He tackles the tough questions that keep college kids up at night. He's funny, smart and likable. It's obvious that he wants to help remove some unneeded stress and guide college bound students into the future. This would be the perfect graduation present.

I found the book to be a great reference not only for college grads but for anyone just graduating high school. Some people will not go to college and need to get a job to live in these trying times. The information provided was practical, well written, andincluded real life scenarios of people struggling to get a job. The book will assist you in facing the challenges that await you. Written Thoughts
The book, from the very first page was helpful. It answered some questions I had and encreased my awareness of what it takes to write a novel.

Writing a Novel by Nigel Watts
I enjoyed the book and it was a quick review of all the things I've learned from other sources. I didn't find anything astonishing in its newness, or anything like that, but it contained sound advice for all writer wannabes. I like it as a reference, to be honest, a book that I can return to for purposes of refreshing myself on certain points. Since the book's not excessively large or wordy, and there are many headings in bold print, it's ideal for such purposes, as far as I'm concerned. A welcome addition to any writer's "how-to" collection!

Most useful writing book I've read so far
Like most writers, I have read many a writing book and they all start to sound the same after awhile.The thing I love about this one is that Watts seems to take all the useful things in the other books and put them into one.I often feel like I'm sifting through books and gleaning only a few useful ideas and writing them down in my notebook.With this book I find myself taking notes constantly.If you're looking to spend more time writing and less time reading about writing, I highly recommend this book.

This Book Packs a Punch!
This is the book I keep with me at all times.I simple love it, because it is small, yet has a wealth of information. How to write, the 8 point arc, ideas and how to start and finish your novel is some of the information you'll find in this volume.

Worth the read
This how-to book has plenty of practical tips, food for thought as well as helpful warnings of common mistakes to avoid. The reading is brisk, due to smartly-organized mini chapters throughout.

Housekeeping note: of three how-to books on novel writing I've so far read, I was surprised that there were numerous spelling mistakes or misplaced words in Watts' book (and I'm not referring to mere British vs. American word spelling variations). For a book on the art of writing, one would expect -- or at least hope -- that the proofreader wasn't quite so asleep. That, and a few too many vague instructions on "do this, but don't do what I just told you too much" lowered an otherwise 5-star book to a 4 or 4 1/2. Hopefully they'll clean up the sloppy typos and make some of the instructions clearer on a subsequent edition of this otherwise nifty work. ... Read more

I read this book once and scored a 966/1000 on the Workstation test. Trust me... buy this book!

Great Book!
Too bad there isn't a book like this for all of the MCSE exams. It's concise but detailed enough to give you all the info you need to pass the exam.

Good for testers
I found the book to be a good exam reference. Unattended installations are really nailed as is troubleshooting.However, the coverage of RAS is cursory and network monitoring was not even included in the topics.

It isbest suited for test takers alone so I would have reservations for anyonebuying it as a blanket reference guide for NT WKSN.

I took it back
This book starts with an outburst of British patriotism, everyone speaks the language, but on reflection we are trying to teach it to the poor folks who dont speak it yet. Then these folks and their teachers are thoroughly patronized, they are all stupid, but this book will guide everyone. Very unpleasant reading. Some information is biased and clearly flawed.

Trivial and unfriendly
This book is very much the same as the other books on the subject of teaching English as a foreign language. Some chapters may even appear to say exactly the same as previous authors. But in some aspects this book is quite original. It starts with an outburst of patriotic praise of the English language.You get the message that the world speaks English and we must teach the very few who are so unfortunate not to so so yet. What about them, your students? You are advised not to be preconceived, to avoid stereotypes. Unfortunately the book does precisely what it tells you not to do. It says that the Arabs are too demanding, the Spaniards get too excited, and so on, complaining about different nationalities. In my view this book is rather trivial and too unfriendly.

Not the best!
There is a lot of information in this book, the same you find in others on the same topic. And I have read them all! Two things I do not like in this one. It appears to expect the EFL teacher to be totally incompetent and tends to state the obvious in a very patronising tone. It tells you what a CV is:"A CV is a record of your education, training, emplyment and related aspects of your life...". It tells you that you should find out the address of a chemist before you go abroad just in case you fall ill. And more advice of the same nature and at the same level. Finally!Answers!
I was worried about going abroad to teach English in South Korea, and this is the best source I found to calm my fears.It has a list of resources in case you run into trouble, too, at the back.

Worthless
Korea has the worst reputation in terms of teaching jobs. Look up "Korean school blacklist" on Google and see the State Department's travel advisory on Korea - gives a lot more useful info than this piece of fluff.

Not quite four stars, but a few jewels may make it worth more than three.
When this arrived, I couldn't believe it qualified as a book, so I checked out the product pages. Yup, there it was--50 pages. IMHO, that's a fat pamphlet, and at $7.95, somewhat overpriced.

Nonetheless this book contains some practical knowledge. For example, a list of things that aren't readily available, and therefore worth taking; other items that are available, but a lot more expensive. But most important, though no one expects to need it, she includes a list on phone numbers. You can find numbers for embassies easily enough elsewhere, but the true gem is an assortment of phone numbers for Korean government agencies that deal with foreign English language teachers.

So, okay, maybe a lot of the rest of this book could have been found on the internet. Here it's gathered in one place.

Overall, it's worth at least a read at the library even if you have to request an interlibrary loan, if it's not in the bookstore--because it's so short, it won't take long! And if you're short on cash, copy out those phone numbers for the Korean agencies involved with foreign language teachers.

Another book to consider: Korea Calling: The essential handbook for teaching English and livingin South Korea. At 173 pages, it has more than triple the coverage of what are mostly the same topics. At $14.95, that's the better value--except for thost phone numbers...

M Jo hates Korea, not the book
I thought Korea was great, and enjoyed my year there. I was surprised to see the review, and then checked out other Korea books and the same person said the same things about Korea. I doubt M Jo read the book.
