Besides Christmas, two other important holidays celebrated in December are Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The History of Hanukkah Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday, celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. King Antiochus of Syria ruled Judea 2,500 years ago, and forbid the Jews to practice their religion. A group of Jews secretly united and formed an army to fight the Syrians. They called themselves Maccabees, with Judah as their leader. Eventually they grew strong enough to defeat the Syrian army and reclaimed Judea. The Syrians had polluted all but one container of olive oil, which was used to light the menorah, a light that burned continuously in the Temple. Because there was only enough oil to last for one day, Judah sent for more, but learned it would take at least a week to arrive. Miraculously, the menorah burned for eight nights on that small amount of oil. Hanukkah (also spelled "Chanukah") begins each year on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev and lasts for eight nights. This year the holiday begins on December 4. Each night, the family says a blessing and lights the menorah. A special candle, the Shamosh, is lit first each night, and the other candles are lit from its flame. The first night, the candle on the far right is lit; each night the family lights an additional candle.

It is precisely during such bleak moments that we are compelled to celebrate. Rejoicing in past victories helps put our current troubles in perspective, reminding us that we have suffered before, and not just survived but thrived. Moreover, with terrorists trying to rob innocents of any joy, and any semblance of a normal life, observing holidays becomes yet another act of defiance, a leap of faith asserting our commitment to stick to the everyday. In the modern world, this festival of gelt-giving and of lights became the popular Jewish response to Christmas envy, the malady that seized many a Jewish household each December. In fact, with eight nights, and thus eight opportunities for gift-giving, Hanukkah became a way for Jews to trump their Christian neighbors.

One of the celebrations which we frequently view as mostly for the children is Hanukkah. It is true that much of the ritual is attractive to our young ones, much more so that say, Yom Kippur. But proper study of Hanukkah can produce new and useful interpretations. Therefore, let us take a few moments to examine a few possibilities. In the time of the Maccabees, there were two struggles going on. The first and more well known was the fight against the external forces. The Grecco Syrians had taken control of Israel and were forcing the Hebrew to adopt their ways and customs. The Maccabbees were few in number and ill equipped compared to the invading forces. Yet, through patience and perserverance, the few were able to overcome the mighty. There was also an internal struggle. Some Jews found the Greek culture very inviting. There were those who were all too willing to capitulate.

When he died at a very young age, his four generals divided the conquered territories between themselves. The Ptolemies took the area around Egypt, and the Seleucids took the area that is today Syria. Judea was almost a no-man's land between them, fought over by both sides. Eventually the Seleucids under Antiochus IV gained power and control over Judea. In 168 BCE to secure his position and dominance, Antiochus required all the captured people to adopt the Greek way of life called Hellenism. This was not a problem in most areas because the Greek culture was very respected in those times and many of the Jews adopted it and gave up the Commandments and teachings of the prophets. There were, however, many dedicated observant Jews who would not give up their worship of the one true G-d thus angering Antiochus.

Students, faculty, staff and members of the community - both Jewish and non-Jewish - arrived at Winthrop University's Dinkins Student Center to learn and teach about Hanukkah, the Jewish celebration of a miracle in Jerusalem about 2,100 years ago. Although Hanukkah begins at sundown tonight, the campus event was held a few weeks early, before students began taking exams and departing for the holiday break. Members of the Jewish Student Organization, the event's sponsors, had adorned one wall with a large poster of a menorah. Each guest was asked to inscribe one flame with a wish for a miracle. The menorah was radiant with yearnings for "Peace."

When I approached the CEO of Solarax in Frederick, Maryland and told him of our plan, he became very excited about the prospect, as he was an orthodox Jew himself. The cost was around $3500 for the entire installation. It was a small price to pay for its symbolic values to teach about Judaism and environmental issues." Rabbi Stone also chairs the Central Conference of American Rabbis' committee on the environment, and was instrumental in the resolution passed at the CCAR 2000 conference calling for Reform congregations to develop environmental policies and consider installing a Solar Ner Tamid. He shares that the Solar Ner Tamid sets an important example, as it serves "to teach Jewish concern for the earth and our responsibility for using resources wisely."
