[Ps 119.89] Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. [Ps 119.90] They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants. [Ps 119.91] The name of the Twelfth Letter (Lamed) signifies both learning and teaching. Many are familiar with this root through the associated noun, Talmud - the compendium of Rabbinical learning. Lamed's meaning is profoundly integrated with the grammar of the Hebrew lanuage. When prefixed to a word, it signifies the preposition "to", "for", or "according to" as in the verses above. It is used this way in 15 of the 21 Lamed Alphabetic Verses. The integration of the meaneing of the letters with their grammatical functions allows us to analyse words in terms of their constituent letters. For example, the word For Me is analysed as: Yod (Me, Mine) Hebrew is supernaturally self-consistent. A Holographic HOuse where the large-scale structures reflect the meaning of their constituents.

W4613 Assimilation and Jewish Identity in Modern Times Since the large-scale entry of Jews into Western society and culture in the wake of their political emancipation, they have been confronted with unprecedented problems and tensions between the need for assimilation and the struggle to reappraise and redefine their Jewish identity. This seminar, based largely on original sources in English translation, will offera series of case studies of individual Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries whose lives and writings exemplify the rich variety of response to the crisis of identity. Among the figures to be examined are: Rahel Varenhagen; Heinrich Heine; Moses Hess; Otto Weininger; Theodor Herzl; Frans Rosenzweig; Arnold Schoenberg; Franz Kafka; and Sigmund Freud. Mummies, Bialik, And The Lanuage Of Slaves nothing works. Finally, Beni pulls out a star of David and recitessomething in hebrew. That stops the Mummy in his tracks. Ah http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0500/mummies1.asp
Extractions: the language of slaves http://www.jewishworldreview.com THERES A MOMENT in the otherwise forgettable 1999 Universal Studios remake of its 1932 classic film The Mummy when Imhotep, the resurrected high priest of Osiris, played by Arnold Vosloo, corners the professional thief Beni, played by Kevin J. OConnor. Fearing for his life, Beni pulls out a crucifix and quickly mumbles a prayer, to no avail. Increasingly frantic, he tries a number of other religious symbols and traditions, but nothing works. Finally, Beni pulls out a star of David and recites something in Hebrew. That stops the Mummy in his tracks. Ah, the language of the slaves, the Mummy says in what passes for ancient Egyptian, translated into English as a subtitle at the bottom of the silver screen. Imhotep spares Beni, making him his assistant. For the mummified Imhotep, Benis broken Hebrew is a bridge to the ancient world he knew. I was reminded of that line recently after I drove my father, Abraham, across West Orange, New Jersey from Daughters of Israel geriatric center to the Solomon Schechter lower school. My daughter Annas fifth-grade class had been studying the life and work of Hayyim Nachman Bialik, the great poet of the Hebrew renaissance. My father, now 96 years old, as a child had visited with Bialik in Odessa. As if he were visiting a Jewish Santa Claus, my father sat on Bialiks lap and heard poetry and songs from the great mans lips.
