NEWS The Thunder Bay Hiking Association i s a non-profit organization that promotes recreational hiking and related seasonal activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, backpacking and canoeing in Thunder Bay and the district. Full and half-day outings are mainly organized on weekends. Midweek, evening or camping events may also be planned. Skill level and equipment requirements differ depending on the outing. Some outings are easy strolls through gentle terrain, while others demand stout boots and well-toned muscles. Groups average in size from 10 to 20 people, thus the outdoors can be shared while the solitude and rapport with nature are preserved. In the spring, hikers are sometimes out before all the snow has melted! Spring brings with it new growth and an outpouring of hikers anxious to view the wild flowers, smell the fragrances and feel the warmth of the sun. Many summer hiking trails are found on the diverse terrain around Thunder Bay. A terrific view from Mount McKay, interesting flora and fauna on the shores of Lake Superior, and rushing rivers at Silver Falls and High Falls are just a few of the highlights of the area.

You can ride along the wide shoulders on the Trans-Canada Highway, all the way between Calgary and Banff, though the route has some serious hills. The best route is west to east, to go with the prevailing wind and the general drop in elevation. Around town, there are plenty of trails along the Bow River, Policeman's Creek, to the west of town around Quary Lake, the Canmore Nordic Centre, Three Sisters, and to the east of town, around the Benchlands and SilverTip. Correllus State Forest Correllus State Forest occupies over 5,100 acres in the center of Martha's Vineyard. It was created in 1908 as the "Heath Hen Reserve," in an attempt to prevent the bird's extinction. Sadly, the last heath hen (an eastern subspecies of the prairie chicken) was seen in 1932. Today it is managed for passive recreation, mostly hiking and cycling on its 15 miles of bike paths. It is also the focus of one of the largest environmental restoration projects in the country. As part of a cooperative effort, the State Forest is now working to bring back the site's native ecosystem. The Great Plain that forms much of Martha's Vineyard supports an unusual concentration of rare species and extensive examples of several uncommon sand-plain communities, including grasslands, heathlands, barrens, and woodlands, dominated by mixed oak-pine. It was the abundance of woodlands and shrublands that enabled the heath hen to persist here long after they had died out elsewhere in the northeast. Although widespread land clearing began on Martha's Vineyard soon after European settlement in the 17th century, settlement and agriculture were focussed around the perimeter of the island, and the area that is now the state forest remained wooded with forest and scrublands for centuries.

Extractions: You could literally spend weeks hiking the abundant trails in and around the north Olympic Peninsula. Ranging from gentle to aggressive, these trails offer spectacular views. For example, hiking to the nine-story Marymere Falls near Lake Crescent results in a 2,100 rise in elevation and a stunning view of the lake, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island. Olympic Discovery Trail is also an easy outing. This trail mainly follows old railroad routes from Sequim to Port Angeles without entering the mountains. Hurricane Ridge Trails are somewhat moderate with more opportunities to view wildlife and various scenic Olympic Mountain ridges. Kayaking is another popular activity in the Port Angeles region. Last months second annual Port Angeles Kayak Symposium was a huge splash at the city pier and Hollywood Beach. Kayaking in and around Port Angeles is offered in lakes, the ocean and rivers. A few popular sites include Ediz Hook, Lake Crescent, Dungeness Spit, Freshwater Bay, the Elwha River and Lake Ozette. Other water sports that attract numerous visitors include diving, rafting, surfing (yes, surfing!) and windsurfing. The aforementioned Ediz Hook and Lake Crescent attract divers of all levels. The Elwha River has class II+ rapids for those wishing to experience whitewater from Olympic National Park glaciers to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The mouth of the Elwha River, just west of Port Angeles on Hwy. 112, becomes a surfing hot-spot when Pacific storms arrive. A couple of break points near the county park at Salt Creek make the area occasionally as popular for surfing as diving. For windsurfers, Sequim Bay, Port Angeles Bay and Freshwater Bay offer exciting opportunities throughout the year.

This park offers beautiful hiking trails, scenic picnicking and is a quiet place to relax. Trough Creek State Park is along a scenic gorge created as Great Trough Creek cuts through Terrace Mountain and empties into Raystown Lake. This 554-acre park is bordered by Rothrock State Forest and Raystown Lake Recreation Area. The park can be accessed by traveling 16 miles south from Huntingdon along PA Route 26, then 5 miles east along PA Route 994 near the village of Entriken. A popular short hike crosses the suspension bridge and follows Rhododendron Trail to Rainbow Falls. Climb the steps along the waterfall, then hike on to Balanced Rock and return the same way. Some trails are steep and follow along cliffs with drop-offs. Exercise extreme caution and wear hiking shoes. Children must be supervised at all times. Trail conditions may be slippery when wet or icy depending on weather conditions.
