Pullen, 89, of Willow Grove, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at his home. His first wife, Jean A. DeLong Pullen, died Aug. 27, 1982. He graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and Colby College in 1935 and received honorary degrees from Bowdoin, Colby and Ricker colleges. He was an Army captain during World War II and served on the staff and faculty of the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla., and in the 65th Infantry Division during the campaigns of the Rhineland and central Europe. He was a newspaper reporter for the daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta and in advertising with N.W. Ayer and Son agency in Philadelphia, Pa., where he became vice president and head of the creative department in 1957. He resigned in 1965 to devote himself to writing. He authored "The Twentieth Maine," published in 1957, "Shower of Stars," subtitled "The Medal of Honor and the 27th Maine," "Patriotism in America," " Transcendental Boiled Dinner," "Comic Relief," "The Life and Laughter of Artemus Ward" and "Joshua Chamberlain, A Hero's Life and Legacy."

The Palaeontology Museum is housed in the same building and serves as the national treasure chest for fossils numbering more than 1.5 million from Norway and abroad. A dinosaur hall is also popular together with a display of mammoth remains found in Norway.
