Extractions: It is generally accepted that the Gossetts originated in France. Not all, if any, Gossetts who emigrated to America in those early years, however, came from France. On April 13, 1598 King Henry IV authorized the Edict of Nantes. That marked the end of the War of Religion, establishing the legal toleration of Calvinism in Roman Catholic France. During this time French Protestants could hold government office and had special courts to adjudicate disputes between the faiths. The Huguenots (Calvinists) made much gain during that period. In the Peace of Ales (1629), which followed three revolts by the Huguenots, Cardinal Richelieu modified the edict and the Huguenots lost their capacity for armed self-defense. On October 18, 1685, Louis XIV withdrew the edict and declared France entirely Catholic. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes caused thousands of Protestants to emigrate from France rather than accept Catholicism. Many Gossetts left France for other European countries, most commonly Germany, England, and the Netherlands. Whether any came to the Colonies of America at that time, is unknown to this writer. One of the more documented Gossetts of that period was Jean Gosset. A quotation from J.B. Payne, An Amorial of Jersey, p171 "John Gosset, a member of an influential French family, settled in Jersey, shortly after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and founded a family now existing in various branches, both in that island and in England."

Extractions: Edict of Nantes (1598) said that Catholicism was the official religion of France, but Huguenots were allowed to worship in their own castles and a few other places. Things were fairly peaceful for about twenty years. Then the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) began as a Catholic-Protestant confict in Bohemia and spread to Germany. France joined the war in 1632, sending men to help the Swedish. In 1639, French armies entered the war directly. It was France/Sweden against Spain/Austria. The war ended with the Peace of Westphalia. France was again the leading power of Europe, replacing Spain. France took large parts of the Alsace.

Extractions: In late-June 1999 Austin Meredith traveled to London and the day after his return, on 30 June, sent the Thoreau E-Mail Distribution List the following interesting message under the subject heading "Some Thoreau genealogy saved from the German occupation of the Isle of Jersey": I've just gotten back from a trip to the British Library, now in its new digs. The planning commission required them to precisely mimic the hue of the old slate atop the lovely historic pile of the St. Pancras RR station next doorand then replaced the roof of that old structure with a different hue of slate! The old reading room, the biggie with the dome over at the British Museum near Russell Square, is all closed off, being restored. (One is no longer to shift in one's chair while doing one's research and musing of Karl Marx's piles.) In the original King's Library hall, the only "books" now appearing are the pasted-up false spines which once obscured the servants' entrances.
