4-0 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbor
I found this book really interesting, its like little stories in the one book. It also puts u in perspectives of the people in the book, which was sorta cool, but all the same concept of course. I would recommend this book to 7th and 8th graders.

4-0 out of 5 stars my review
my favorit part is when the whole world found out that prarl harbor had been deyastated in a japanese air raid. they thought nothing could hurt this deck until japs. came along. Although the wuited states prossessed to advanced on technolgy such as rador and purple . a top scertecode braker, the informationgathered was often discered of misclassified. but once the raid was luanched , bravery abounded- on booth sides.

3-0 out of 5 stars my book
My book, Air raid Pearl Harbor, was a mixture of good and bad parts.First I found out that the war was unexpected to the Americans. On december 7th the japanese attacked our air base on Oahu.they sank many of our ships and airplanes.i felt that the begining ofthe book was not very exciting because the author madethe book toocomplicated and diffcult to understand. The action got a lot better and the got more exciting. The Americans entered the war and ships were sinking and planes were being blown up.Iwould recommend this book to somone who is interested in complicated books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Air Raid Pearl Harbor!: The Story of December 7, 1941 is a really good book. It tells you everything about pearl harbor. It just tells you what happend. Theres no characters but it is still really good. read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars deth tolls on ye strange travelor
this book is inbetween action and history and by that i mean that 6 out of 8 chapters involve no action whatsoever besides i little thing on spys while the 7 chapter involved the bombing and the 8th involved whom died and who was a hero if i had wonted to learn about the purple machine then i wouldve gone to a museum and learned about it instead of learning what they said before the attack which is totaly useless and it does inolve if not racial hatred itself it still "forgot" to tell of dead japanese and the japanese hero born that day anyway read this book if you wish to read a poorly substituted substitue for action or your moms forcing you too ... This was the best book I have ever read!Loved it. . .loved it. . .loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dan's Review
In just 30 minutes a boy's life would change forever! My story takes place in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii during World War 2. The main characters are Frank, who is 11 and Kenji who is 11. Frank and Kenji both like baseball and reading. My book starts with 2 friends just meeting. Frank is American and Kenji is Japanese. The problem of this tale is that Pearl Harbor gets bombed. The Americans couldn't do anything. My favorite part is when they play baseball. I give this book 4 stars. I liked this book because it had a lot of detail. I think you should read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I would rather read the dictionary
If the goal was to bore you to sleep the writer did a very good job. The writing style was terrible; boring, condescending, and almost comical in its psuedo-sadness. Even during the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was monotonous and repetitive. The story line is undeveloped; the book reads more like a first draft than a final one. The conclusion was predictable; even though the book was a let down, the ending was even more so. This book might have been good with some work; as it was, it stank.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Much History Here
My son is reading PEARL HARBOR IS BURNING, which is short not only on the mood and atmosphere of the time but also on facts. One child dons a "Baltimore Orioles" jacket even though the baseball team didn't move to Baltimore until the 1950's.

The book should focus on the events of Pearl Harbor, not on the story of racial tensions, which is grafted on. That's an important theme, but it doesn't belong here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbor is Burning!
The story takes place in Hawaii, where two boys from very different backgrounds become friends during the strike on Pearl Harbor. This short story is a very good read.My only complaint is that the story ends too soon. The author took time to develop characters but ended the story. It really makes you want to know more about what happens to them in the aftermath of the attack. This book would be a great choice for teachers to read in their classrooms in light of recent events. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of Action for the Young Reader
Ricky Kidd is on a family trip in Hawaii for a wedding. Joseph Norbert, an old friend of Ricky's dad, is getting married. Along for the trip are Ricky's parents, Ricky's little brother and baby sister, Mike - Ricky's friend, and Lisa - Ricky's friend and babysitter for his baby sister.

Not long after they arrive in Hawaii, Norbert tells them he must go out early in the morning to go shark fishing. Ricky's dad thinks this would be a great adventure for Mike and Ricky so he convinces Norbert to take the three of them along.

They venture out in the small boat long before the sun comes up. In the still darkness, Ricky starts doubting that shark-fishing is such a great idea - small boat, big sharks - until a shark bites. With the pull of his line, Ricky's adrenaline flows. He envisions how it will be at school when he shows everyone his necklace of shark teeth and tells them how he caught the beast.

Just when the shark is starting to calm down on the line, Mike falls overboard. Norbert cuts the line and Ricky watches as his prize disappears through the dark water. Norbert jumps in for Mike and they head back to shore.

Ricky can't believe Mike was so clumsy to fall off the boat and ruin his chance of catching the shark. Mike begs him to believe that he didn't fall, he was pushed.

Mike sets out to prove that Norbert pushed him overboard and in the process discovers some very unsettling things about Mr. Kidd's old friend.

There's something about a buoy carrying an antique statue that a white haired man picks up from Norbert's boat and then throws it in a dumpster. The dumpster is emptied before anyone realizes that Mike has the statue. Then, the real adventure begins.

Who are these people trying to get the statue? Why was it hidden in a buoy and thrown in a dumpster? how does Norbert fit into all of this? How will Ricky, Mike, and Lisa learn the truth?

"The Volcano of Doom" is the first book in the Accidental Detective series. Sigmund Brouwer does an excellent job of balancing danger and suspense for the young reader. Boys and girls will enjoy the action of "The Volcano of Doom."

5-0 out of 5 stars Back in Action
Ricky and his friends Mike and Lisa are enjoying their Easter vacation in Hawaii.Ricky's dad is going to be the best man in his college roommate's wedding, and everyone is enjoying relaxing on the beach the week before. But then Mike discovers a Japanese statue that was hidden on their host's boat. What was Norbert doing with it?And who is trying to steal it?But when Norbert disappears, the friends find they have more questions then answers. Can they piece together the clues they do have in time to save the wedding?

I've been a fan of this series since it's initial release, and it's wonderful to have a new story staring the Accidental Detectives.I was a little startled by the additional of Rachel, Ricky's one-year-old sister. But once I got used to this new character, I felt back in the groove of the stories.

As is always the case with this series, the plot is truly mystifying. The characters are well established in Mr. Brouwer's mind, and it shows in how well developed they are in this book. The only one who wasn't quite up to par was Joel, but that's probably because he had a small part in the story.

Once again, this group of friends is playing jokes on each other and solving life-threatening cases. This is one of my favorite series, and it's great to see it back in print. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Under the Blood red Sun
World War I had just ended, a Japanese family had also just moved to Hawaii. Tomi was born in Pearl Harbor and his parents raised him folling the Japanese culture.
He only has but the friends on his baseball team, the Rats. Tomi's grandpa still wants to be a Japanese family but Tomi doesn't agree. Tomi is used to having his dad very happy, but once Japan invades Pearl Harbor he has his life changed forever. Once Tomi comes face to face with an officer who is looking for his grandpa and father. The officer believes that they are Japanese spies. After this, Tomi's life is changed forever.

I suggest this book for all historical fiction lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young adult book re: japaese american life during wwii
This is a great way to introduce the dark side of the US during WWII.Our own racism and treament of Japanese Americans is portrayed appropriately for older children and young adults. It is a great companion to books for this age group learning about the holocaust (such as Boy in the Striped Pajamas or Anne Frank)as it demonstrates how pervasive racism is and the consequences of it on a society. The central character is a young Japanese American boy living in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The conflict between his heritage and his country and how his family is treated is well portrayed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming a Young Man
My favorite book that I read this year for Paces PAidiea is Under the Blood-Red Sun by Graham Salisbury. It tells the story of a Japanese boy named Tomi who lives in Hawaii. One day Japanese airplanes bomb Pearl Harbor, causing great fear and anger towards the Japanese-Americans living there. Now it is up to Tomi and his friends to stop this nonsense and restore peace to their community. To see if Tomi can accomplish this, you must read the book for yourself.
This book magnifies examples of one of the fourteen ideas, becoming, that I've learned about by using the Paces PAideia study guide for this book.Including elements like vocabulary, homework items, and journal entries, the Paces study guide for Under the Blood Red Sun enhanced my understanding of this historical fiction paperback. Anyone looking for action and adventure should read this marvelous book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tomi and the War
The book, Under the Blood Red Sun, is an historical fiction book that tells how some Japanese were treated during the war in Pearl Harbor. This book is a chilling and thrilling book that has action in every page.Tomi struggles losing his dad and then his grandpa yet his friends keep him joyful by keeping his mind on playing baseball.I feel if he did not lose his dad and grandpa, Tomi would not have become a working man at an early age.I recommend a PACES Study Guide to go along with the book which helped me learn more about the author and more about that time period. There are vocabulary words each week that help you understand new words that relate to the Japanese culture and traditions and their language. Each week has a parent discussion which helps students expand their minds even more.If you like historic fiction you will enjoy this book. ... Product Description
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the largest landowner and richest woman in the Hawaiian kingdom. Upon her death in 1884, she entrusted her property--known as Bishop Estate--to five trustees in order to create and maintain an institution that would benefit the children of Hawai`i: Kamehameha Schools. A century later, Bishop Estate controlled nearly one out of every nine acres in the state, a concentration of private land ownership rarely seen anywhere in the world. Then in August 1997 the unthinkable happened: Four revered kupuna (native Hawaiian elders) and a professor of trust-law publicly charged Bishop Estate trustees with gross incompetence and massive trust abuse. Entitled "Broken Trust," the statement provided devastating details of rigged appointments, violated trusts, cynical manipulation of the trust's beneficiaries, and the shameful involvement of many of Hawai`i's powerful.

No one is better qualified to examine the events and personalities surrounding the scandal than two of the original "Broken Trust" authors. Their comprehensive account together with historical background, brings to light information that has never before been made public, including accounts of secret meetings and communications involving Supreme Court justices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Roller coaster ride through an epic struggle
This book is pretty readable from the beginning, even as it gives the necessary background: the early Hawaiian kingdom, Pauahi's education and character, the early establishment of the trust and Kamehameha Schools, the vacillation between trade and prep school. But the book really starts to pick up steam as Hawaii achieves statehood, accelerates through the Gov. Waihe'e appointments and then becomes epic as Lokelani Lindsey is appointed as a trustee.I was amazed to find my self sucked into the action as if I were reading a Michael Crichton novel. I couldn't put this book down and found myself reading into the wee hours when I should have been sleeping. As a resident of Hawaii, I also found the relevance to current politics compelling. It talks of the efforts of Ed Case (recent candidate to replace Representative Neil Abercrombie) to reign in trustee compensation, and shows Abercrombie (currently running for Hawaii Governor), himself, in a group hug with the head trustee. This is an amazing book, a must read for anyone interested in Hawaii and a sheer joy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calling all history buffs! (And everyone else)
This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever been enchanted with the beauty of the Hawaiian islands. It grabs your attention from the first page. I don't normally read historical books but this one deserves to be taught in the classroom. We all know the story of Pearl Harbor, but few know about the corruption and mis-treatment of the native Hawaiian population.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Courageous Book
It is difficult to comprehend the courage it took for Randall Roth and Samuel King to publish this book, unless you lived in Hawaii.Hawaii is a small state and Bishop Estate is the big fish in the small pond. The book details how the one whistle blower was fired from Bishop Estate and hounded until he lost his house, was bankrupt and had to move away from Hawaii.

In 1990, Bishop Estate was conservatively estimated to have an endowment of $10 billion, invested largely in land in Hawaii. The value of land in Hawaii has increased since 1990.

The book provides a blow by blow account of how Bishop Estate was manipulated to become a political plum, with political insiders selected as trustees. Then trustees kept giving themselves pay raises.Compensation was nearly $1 million each annually as well as self-dealing contracts for additional compensation. The book also details non-bid contracts for trustee's family and friends.According to the book, from 1991 to 1996, Bishop Estate trustees admitted they suffered almost $400 million in losses and loss reserves on investments.

The book describes how the state judiciary threw out the criminal indictments against the trustees on procedural grounds.Without deciding whether crimes had or had not been committed, the judciary sharply criticized the attorney general's office for being overzealous in efforts to secure indictments. They also declared the entire matter finished and no new indictments could be brought. The Bishop Estate trustees were not required to compensate the trust for mismanagement.

The book makes one wonder if the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation could be manipulated in the future by politicians, like Bishop Estate was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended reading
Written by district court judge Samuel P. King and law teacher Randall W. Roth, Broken Trust: Greed, Mismanagement & Political Manipulation at America's Largest Charitable Trust is the true story of greed, corruption, and mismanagement that plagued the "nation's wealthiest charity" according to the Wall Street Journal circa 1995 - the Bishop Estate, legacy of Hawaiian Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who created the trust to maintain the educational institution of Kamehamea Schools and therefore benefit the children of Hawaii. In August 1997, four respected leaders of the native Hawaiian community and a professor of trust law publically accused the Bishop Estate's trustees with gross incompetence and severe trust abuse, to the point of being criminal, in a statement titled "Broken Trust". Now Broken Trust: Greed, Mismanagement & Political Manipulation gathers never-before-public information concerning the entire sordid matter, especially highlighting how corruption flourished in the legislature, courts, and legal profession, and how the media and the native Hawaiian community neglected to take a stand against it - virtually the opposite; the community would often be coaxed into protesting attempts to reform the trust or limit the power of the trustees. Broken Trust is not only a case study, but also offers larger lessons about the dangers of unchecked power and civil responsibility, and is very highly recommended reading for American and Hawaiian history shelves in public, college, and private libraries alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Followers of Non-Profit Organizations
As an attorney who serves on and counsels boards of non-profit institutions, I was espcially interested in this compelling tale of what amounts to a worst-case scenario.Princess Pauahi's last will left a trust corpus so large that it called for persons most experienced in management of investments. But for decades, the judge-appointed trustees (a decidedly amateurish lot) were insensitive to their awesome responsibility for providing high-level academic and cultural education to thousands of Hawaiian children, the beneficiaries under the last will of the Princess. This is a close account of the bumps and warts of trustees who have succumbed to temptation, from which we learn that trustees, regardless of the scale of assets under their administration, and regardless of the particular political system and the courts that have the duty to supervise them, need to be held to account regularly. ... FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A dramatic retelling of a Hawaiian folktale featuring a righteous family, a cruel and callous civilization and a deity whose wrath brings a terrible storm of destruction.Amazon.com Review
You could easily fall in love with just about any story that's illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist David Shannon, but that's doubly true for this mythic Hawaiian tale of justice and compassion from master storyteller Rafe Martin.

In an idyllic island paradise, two native kids save a shark that's become stranded in the shallows near their home, but just moments later they offend their hardhearted king and are condemned to death. Their parents beg for mercy but to no avail, and when even their neighbors refuse to help, they're forced to enlist some very unusual aid: Kauhuhu, the terrifying, shape-changing Shark God.

From the tanned, stoic face of the king to the 20-foot-tall, tattooed back of the Shark God, Shannon's rich colors and dynamic compositions serve well to pace Martin's iconic tale. The tension builds as the children's death sentence approaches, but with loving parents and a big scary friend like Kauhuhu, somehow you just know they'll be all right. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Shark God!
Rafe Martin is a very nice writer of stories having to do with legends and stories. He is also a very nice man to meet in person and is great with kids.David Shannon is a wonderful artist and has drawn beautiful pictures. This story is about young children who touch the king's drum and are threatened by death. The shark god helps. It is a nice story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok story, great art
Though not bad, the story is short and overly simple, probably because the author altered it from the original legends and made it more Americanized. However the artwork is where this book really shines, and is probably worth the price on that alone.I bought it as a gift for my Godson who likes sharks.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 6 year old son loves this story!!!
My son picked "The Shark God" as a reward for a reading challenge at his elementary school. He has requested this story be read and reread to him multitudes of times and has yet to tire of it. The story provides him a glimpse into a culture that he would not otherwise get. When we get to the page featuring the shark god, my son's eyes are big with awe. I like how Rafe Martin made changes to create a family that my son responds to. And I had not made the connection about the illustrator being the one who wrote and illustrated the "David" books, which all my sons love!! This would make a great gift book as the story has the excitement kids love and the education parents want.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Shannon outdoes himself
David Shannon ("No David") channels the spirit of Gaugin in this book. You can hardly believe it's the same artist. The story is thematically challenging for the early reader (6+).The protagonists are asked to place their trust in a shark god, which is portrayed with a touch of quiet malevolence.Yet they are rewarded for their kindness and faith.A beautiful, haunting story. ... This book is one of a series originally written by faculty in a Kamehameha reading program. The books were designed to increase students reading skills and their knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture by focusing on topics such as the Hawaiian monarchy.

Some of these books have been translated from their original English into Hawaiian through the efforts of the staff of the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Studies Institute.

We are pleased at the reception both the English and the Hawaiian editions have received from the educational and general audiences. ... Read more

Throughout the book moment-in-time panels bring a sense of immediacy to the reader by using eye-witness accounts of certain events. Including photographs to really bring the subject to life. ...
