Whereas the final adjournment of the Forty-fourth Congress without
making the usual appropriations for the support of the Army for the
fiscal year ending June 30, 1878, presents an extraordinary occasion
requiring the President to exercise the power vested in him by the
Constitution to convene the Houses of Congress in anticipation of the
day fixed by law for their next meeting:

Now, therefore, I, Rutherford B. Hayes, President of the United
States, do, by virtue of the power to this end in me vested by the
Constitution, convene both Houses of Congress to assemble at their
respective chambers at 12 o'clock noon on Monday, the 15th day of
October next, then and there to consider and determine such measures
as in their wisdom their duty and the welfare of the people may seem
to demand.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of
the United States to be affixed.

Thomas Nast has been called the greatest political cartoonist of all time. He was much more than that. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant attributed his presidential victory in the 1868 campaign "to the sword of (Indian-fighting Gen. Phil) Sheridan and the pencil of Nast." Nast could smite the most powerful titans with a single stroke of that pencil. New York's "Boss" Tweed would attest to this. He went to prison and died there because of Nast. So would Horace Greeley who saw his efforts to ascend the presidency flustered by Nast and his vituperative cartoons. But above his political tour de force, Nast gave us four memorable and immortalimages: the Democratic donkey, the Republican elephant, Santa Claus and Uncle Sam. Great Biographical Profile
Thomas Nast is not well known today. He should be. His artistic talent was unquestionable; he could have been a world-class painter. Instead he opted for the political arena and became one of the most powerful men of his era. He sliced political opponents with a rapier-like pen. He was as merciless as he was creative. Above all he gave us enduring images and this is where Alef does it so well. His article not only tells the Nast story with a vivid style, and quite a story it is, but Alef provides us with some of Nast's most famous images: the birth of the Democratic donkey, the Republican elephant and the basis for our present depiction of Santa Claus. This biographical profile accurately depicts an historical era--and is also a lot of fun to read.
