Product Description
Nutrition plays a key role in many areas of public health such as pre-term delivery, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular and renal diseases. Government nutrition policy, therefore, bears a huge influence on the nation's biggest health concerns. There is a clear need for information on this topic that unarguably holds the key to the primary and secondary prevention of some of the major causes of premature death in the US.

Nutrition in Public Health: Principles, Policies, and Practice provides an overview of the field and focuses on the role of the Federal Government in determining nutrition policy and practice. Beginning with a review of the definition and principles of public health, the book examines trends in the US population and nutritional epidemiology. It considers programs to help reduce disparities in the prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases among various populations, as well as a detailed chapter on obesity with discussions on global impact and cost, pediatric obesity, and the impact of socioeconomic status and ethnicity. Specific information is included on breastfeeding mothers, HIV/AIDS, and prison inmates. The book offers a look at the current nutritional status and guidelines in the US before providing a set of tools for the responsible practice of public health nutrition such as conducting nutrition assessments, designing and carrying out social marketing campaigns, writing grant proposals, and enacting programs to promote food security and ensure food supply and safety.

Focusing on nutrition issues in the urban setting, Nutrition in Public Health: Principles, Policies, and Practice provides an integrated view of nutrition needs and the policies and political mechanisms that affect the delivery of quality food and nutrition services. ... Read more

Product Description

One thing that women know about healthy eating is that the healthy habits keep changing. Who has the time or the patience to keep up? After all, today’s on-the-go working girl can barely pause to count the change from her morning coffee, much less count carbs, fat grams, or calories.
At last, there’s a guide to good eating, created just for women, that helps them navigate the dietary temptations they face every day and still enjoy the foods they love—no complex nutritional calculations or abandonment of entire food groups required! In The Daily Fix, nutritionist Alexa Fishback distills the fundamentals of good nutrition into 12 distinct, easy-to-adopt daily habits targeting “trouble zones” in which women tend to make unhealthy food choices, and includes on-the-spot strategies for staying on track.
For example:
-Healthy Habit #1: Need a cuppa to start the day? Drink up! Coffee is an excellent source of antioxidants. Just be wary of the add-ons—including artificial sweeteners, which can ramp up appetite
-Healthy Habit #5: Stuck in a lunchtime eat-and-meet? Learn how to healthfully navigate the conference room spread. (Hint: Discreetly peel away the cheese slice from the pre-made turkey sandwich, and save 100 calories)
-Healthy Habit #9: Socializing with colleagues after work? A margarita may be hip, but it also pads the hips. Order red wine instead; it’s up to 400 calories lighter—and it has health benefits as well
These are dietary habits for the real world, patterned after a woman’s typical daily routine. Fishback teaches women to “eat clean”—establish healthy dietary habits through habit management—rather than fear certain foods. With a few slight adjustments, they'll be on the path to lifetime weight control and well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will read again!
I love this book!I just bought several diet and nutrition books because I am trying to drop those unwanted pounds. You can never tell by looking at the summary and reading the reviews if it really will be good, and what you are looking for. This book is both. It's easy to read, realistic, actionable and entertaining. It is geared toward all types of women so it has something for everyone.Plus, I learned little tidbits like apples help to whiten teeth - who knew?I plan to read this book again in one month for a refresher. It's my favorite of all the ones I bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
This book was extremely helpful and informative. A must for anyone looking to make healthy, reponsible choices to their lifestyle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally... the proper mix of science and psychology!
Alexa Fishback is a Registered Dietitian.Fortunately, she doesn't let that get in her way when it comes to delivering helpful, useful, and accurate information about diet and nutrition. You won't find any "pop-nutrition" here, and she doesn't throw nutritional minutiae at you.For example, I recently read (not in this book) that my risk for prostate cancer was high because I am over 71 inches tall and I am "not eating 5+ servings of tomato-based foods (spaghetti sauce, etc) per week."But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that risk factors include:

- Age:Men older than 50 years
- Family history:Having a father, brother, or son who has had prostate cancer
- Race:Black

It would be nice if there was somebody to help sort out this conflicting information.Fishback is a big help in this regard.Through discussing the biological basis of nutrition and dieting, and detailing specific case histories on behavior management, Fishback makes a convincing case that it is within the power of most of us to reach a higher plane of nutrition and fitness.

How can you argue with that?

The Daily Fix is a book designed for women.Fortunately, it is chock full of information helpful to both men and women, so don't let the "Women's Health" label keep you from reading it.

What I really liked about this book, besides its steering away from pop-nutrition topics like "cleaning out your toxins," is its focus on YOU as the change agent. Not diet pills, or wonder fruits, or starving yourself.Fishback won't have you go hungry.

Fishback starts right off with those very real obstacles to weight (and health) control:

- we have easy access to excess calories everywhere.
- we have so many choices of things to eat, that we keep eating.
- we are bombarded with anti-health messages, junk food advertisements, and bad information.
- Our current levels of physical activity are very low or non-existent.Gardening, elevator riding, and chanting a million excuses for not exercising are not aerobic activities.

She then goes through a day... sleep, breakfast, lunch, dinner, a couple of snacking periods, perhaps eating out or eating while traveling... and makes suggestions on how to improve your diet.Exercise is important as well.

She summarizes these 12 "Daily Fix Healthy Habits" (p. ix), with my comments following each one:

1.Fix up your morning drink so you can enjoy it, guilt-free, every day (mine is a half caf, half decaf, non-fat latte with no sweetener).

2. Start every day with a breakfast regimen that includes both fiber and protein (try this recipe:1/2 cup regular rolled oats, with half a sliced banana, a tablespoon of dried cranberries or rolled dates, and 1/4 cup walnuts.Add 1 cup of water in a microwaveable dish with a broad or high rim [the oatmeal will bubble up as it is cooking].Cook on high for 2 minutes.Add some non-fat milk or maple syrup to taste.Yum!).

3.Aim for a midmorning and a mid-afternoon snack every day in addition to your three regular meals (but control... YOU choose the snack foods, not your coworkers).

4.Eat a lunch that contains high-fiber, high-water-content foods and a portion of lean protein (do you really need mayonnaise and sour cream?).

5.If you have a sweet tooth, have a 'sweet nothing' every day (make it count).

6.Drink up to one alcoholic beverage per day (a mega-sized margarita does not count as one drink).

7.Use dining out as an opportunity to each fish (but please be aware of the impacts of this on our oceans' bounty... check out the Monterey Aquarium's Seafood Watch program).

8.Make a resolution to cook dinner at least once a week (make your partner do this as well).

9.Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night (you're not eating, at least).

10.Walk at least 30 minutes almost every day and work out 4 to 5 times a week at a higher intensity for at least 20 minutes (make your health as important as your job... what happens if you ignore your work?).

11.Drink water with every meal and throughout the day (you'll also save money).

12.Remember, a workday is a workday regardless of where you are.Practice these rules as you travel (amen).

Good book. This would be a great present for your best friend. Then you can chat about it over coffee in the morning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick read; great info!
LOVED this! It's a quick read, with lots of great ideas for snacks and meals. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's really basic info, but I like having it available in an easy-to-read format that I could understand.

While I read, I took down some of her suggestions for snacks & meals, then put them into my phone's "Notes" section; this way, I can use it as a quick reference when I'm grocery shopping & won't forget to pick anything up!

The only downside? I was expecting it to have more of the same voice as Women's Health, and it read kind of bland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Non-Diet Book!!!A+++
This is a great book full of healthy advice. It's not a diet book per se, but instead gives you tips on how to live a healthy life. Will you lose the extra weight you're carrying around following her advice?Absolutely! But you'll also learn how to splurge on vacation without feeling guilty. It's all about compromise and moderation.I have the hardcover version and also downloaded it to my Kindle so I can easily reference it on the go.

A big thumbs up to the author for pointing out the negatives in artificial sweetners and frozen meals.

This book tastes great and it's good for you, too. FeedingYour Child for Lifelong Health: Birth Through Age Six is based onthe principle of "metabolic programming," the scientifically rootedidea that foods eaten in early childhood directly affect the functionof individual cells that control strength, intelligence, the immunesystem, and other vital functions. Think of it as a convolutedmolecular take on the old maxim "You are what you eat." Genetics andother external factors also play a role, of course, but those factorsare beyond our control. What goes on the dinner table, however, isnot. The point of this book is to help parents teach their kids tolike healthful foods, thus getting them into a lifelong habitof eating well and staying healthy.

There is a fair amount of science in this book, but the clear writingand good organization make it go down easy. Particularly helpful arethe numerous graphs and boxes that highlight such topics as the bestsources of calcium and iron (and why too much iron is dangerous), thedifferences between breast milk and formula, the eight key nutrientsfor different ages, and how to identify and even prevent allergies andintolerance to certain foods. The recipes, sample meals, healthysnacks, and tips for dealing with finicky eaters are alone worth theprice of the book. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health is aninvaluable guide to ensuring that not only will your kids eat theirvegetables, they'll even ask for seconds. --Shawn Carkonen ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dubious assertions weaken entire argument
This book has some good advice and suggestions for feeing one's child, but there are a number of assertions in the book that are put forth as if they are science but could only be the cultural bias of the author. For example, arguing that a child must begin solids by 6 months so that he can chew so that he can exercise his mouth for beginning to talk--mentioned on at least two pages--seems absurd to me. Her ideas about when a child needs to start solids and what and how he should be eating by 9-11 months is incongruent with a number of other resources I've consulted. I happen to disagree with her and believe her opinion reflects more cultural bias than anything based on empirical scientific evidence. This doesn't mean her other claims are unfounded, but with such glaring examples of cultural bias disguise as science making me raise my eyebrows, I am skeptical of other arguments and claims she makes that I might have taken at face value on the merit of her degree and training, in which I have less expertise. That said, I don't think her methods and arguments do any harm and truly do foster health. Her advice on how not to have food battles with achild is good. That said, I'll be looking for other resources to go along with this one. I'm disappointed this could not be my "bible," but perhaps that was just wishful thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
This is one of the best books out there about child nutrition. Everything is very well explained and easy to follow. There were so many things that I was confused about how, when and what to feed my child through out the different stages of life. This book helped me very much, specially since I am a first time mom. It tells you exactly how much your baby need to be healthy and happy. The only thing that I didn't like was that for a bottle feeding baby, I felt like I was doing something wrong and bad for my child's health. But when it comes to solids, it helps a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, useful information
Good source of information about what to feed your kid and when. For those of you who are careful about what you eat and know basic nutrition, none of this is rocket science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach
I read this book when my first child was born 5 1/2 years ago, and it set the course for how I feed my children.I came away from this book with clear, applicable guidelines for presenting food to my children. This is sound dietary and psychological advice that stays at an abstract enough level that you can apply the principles to your home diet, instead of presenting specific recipes or diet plans you must follow.

This is one of the few child rearing books whose impact has resonated five years after reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly excellent -- with a couple of caveats
Of all the books I have read on feeding babies, toddlers, and children, I find this the most realistic and most the clearly based in scientific research.

It's clearly written and well organized, and doesn't recommend any strange foods you wouldn't put on the table for guests or tuck into yourself.

That said, I was disappointed at the authors recommendation to start kids on refined breads and crackers because 'they don't need the extra fiber' -- along side the suggestion that you not start your child out on anything you don't want them to prefer. It seems contradictory to me, and my little guy is getting whole grains only.I was also disappointed at the author's lack of knowledge about breastfeeding. In the parts of the book that deal with slightly older children, they have some misleading and out of date information that discounts the benefits of extended breastfeeding and overstates the benefits of cows milk and artificial baby milks.

But, even so, I must say that they have some extremely wise and useful information about how children think about and respond to food and some excellent advice for how to raise a child with a good relationship to food -- it's balanced (an occasional piece of candy at a friend's house or a packet of chips after swim class won't kill most children) but weighted in favor of whole foods and higher nutrition.

Just what I was looking for! ... Read more

Product Description
An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics laid the groundwork for today's food revolution and changed the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. Now, a new introduction and concluding chapter bring us up to date on the key events in that movement. This pathbreaking, prize-winning book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why.Amazon.com Review
In the U.S., we're bombarded with nutritional advice--the work, we assume, of reliable authorities with our best interests at heart. Far from it, says Marion Nestle, whose Food Politics absorbingly details how the food industry--through lobbying, advertising, and the co-opting of experts--influences our dietary choices to our detriment. Central to her argument is the American "paradox of plenty," the recognition that our food abundance (we've enough calories to meet every citizen's needs twice over) leads profit-fixated food producers to do everything possible to broaden their market portion, thus swaying us to eat more when we should do the opposite. The result is compromised health: epidemic obesity to start, and increased vulnerability to heart and lung disease, cancer, and stroke--reversible if the constantly suppressed "eat less, move more" message that most nutritionists shout could be heard.

Nestle, nutrition chair at New York University and editor of the 1988 Surgeon General Report, has served her time in the dietary trenches and is ideally suited to revealing how government nutritional advice is watered down when a message might threaten industry sales. (Her report on byzantine nutritional food-pyramid rewordings to avoid "eat less" recommendations is both predictable and astonishing.) She has other "war stories," too, that involve marketing to children in school (in the form of soft-drink "pouring rights" agreements, hallway advertising, and fast-food coupon giveaways), and diet-supplement dramas in which manufacturers and the government enter regulation frays, with the industry championing "free choice" even as that position counters consumer protection. Is there hope? "If we want to encourage people to eat better diets," says Nestle, "we need to target societal means to counter food industry lobbying and marketing practices as well as the education of individuals." It's a telling conclusion in an engrossing and masterfully panoramic exposé. --Arthur Boehm ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay FAR away if you have read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes
I just finished reading Good Calories, Bad Calories and I was hungry for more! It seemed to me that this book would offer an interesting view on how exactly the flawed perception of "saturated(or just all) fats are the devil" about what we know came to be.

Bad idea. The author actually tries to shove this idea into your head over and over again, and seems to even have been a player in the move that actually religiously defended this school of thought. She goes on and on about how increased consumption of saturated fat has increased the chronic diseases in the USA since 1970's, but interestingly, she also acknowledges the fact that sugar consumption has skyrocketed at the same time, but pays no attention to that significance, "it's just extra calories". Did I mention that she's also a firm believer in the "calories in, calories out" theory? Her argument for poor people being overweight is that they are too stupid to understand their nutritional advice. Yes, really.

After the first few chapters I was fully aware of where this was heading, but I decided to read on anyway, hoping for some interesting tidbits about how the food industry was manipulating scientists (you know.. what the book is actually SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT, not telling me what to eat!). It however turned out to be an incredibly boring day by day descriptions of some insignificant events (yeah, I really want to read about the color printing of the food pyramid, thanks!) or how the food industry affected the "wording" of the guidelines (but not the overall meaning ("eat lean meat instead of don't eat beef" and so on)) and nothing of real interest.

Full disclosure: I read about half the book before I gave up, I just couldn't stand her trying to push her dietary advice into every paragraph.
If you are a critical thinker that has read GCBC you will absolutely LOATHE this book, as it is the exact junk science that Taubes laments in his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic

Originally published in 2002 and updated in 2007 Marion Nestle's "Food Politics" is an informative if academic read. She explains clearly and patiently how the food industry has co-opted nutritionists, government agencies, and schools, threatening the health and safety of consumers and children. And when they cannot co-opt they choose to misinform, lie, slander, or sue, as when Texas cattlemen sued Oprah Winfrey.Especially frustrating is how, thanks to their successful lobbying and close government connections (there seems to be a revolving door between the Food & Drug Administration and the executive suites of food conglomerates such as Monsanto) the food industry can legally mislabel their products to misinform consumers. This is especially true for vitamin supplements, which can make a lot of outrageous claims without ever having to go through FDA approval.

The only problem with the book is that it is perhaps too right.Since the initial publication of "Food Politics," a lot of other books, sometimes based on the original insights offered in "Food Politics," have been published that gives readers a more comprehensive and disturbing look into the manipulations and machinations of the vast and powerful food industry. And this past summer a documentary called "Food, Inc." came out, which puts in stunning and striking visual context the problems with the food industry.Even Marion Nestle's new book "What to Eat" distills all the insights from her first work.

Reading "Food Politics" then is slightly redundant. That is not the fault of the author.Indeed, it's a testament to how influential the book has become.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Had to read this for a college class on Consumer Science. None the less, this is actually disturbing and eye-opening about the industry. You can really see many of the examples that she points out in current time.

If you enjoy nutrition, food or health, this is something to put on your reading list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful info!
This book is packed with helpful information that I can really use...Rather than providing a dumbed-down, one-size-fits-all recipe for feeding, Briggs gives horse owners the facts and formulas they need to make sure their horses' nutritional needs are met.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try something else...
This book is complete and informative, albeit a little hard to read. Horses have many different dietary requirements: fiber, fat, vitamins, minerals, protein... and Karen Briggs doesn't create any charts or guides to help you figure out which elements are likely to be lacking in your particular horses diet. Instead, try "Beyond the Hay Days" which provides equally detailed and comprehensive information as well as helpful summary charts that help you understand what your equines diet might be lacking and how best to suppliment it. ... I found this book to be a cornicopia of health information. The author takes authority from the Bible to describe the way it is most healthful to eat. After all, who knows our bodies better than the very One who designedthem?I stumbled upon this book after the realization that I am the oneresponsible for the health of my family, the people I dearly love, and yet,I didn't know a whole lot about nutrition. After reading this book, I sureknow alot now.We all feel great too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!!
Great service. I received the book in excellent condition for a great price. Extremely fast shipping which I really appreciated because I waited until the last minute to order! Thank you!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars could use a cd
I find the book to be repetitive in language, it could be shortened and repeated in other area's of the chapter, it could also provide a cd with video presentation and testing, overall it served it's purpose for class, however, I feel it could be improved.

There's no question that a vegetarian or vegan diet is just as nutritionally sound during pregnancy as one that includes animal protein. 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful read!
Let me start off by saying I have been veg for 20 years and vegan for 12.I had been looking for info on having a healthy vegan pregnancy but most of what I found had to do with smoking, illegal drug use, etc. which was not helpful in my case.I was over joyed when I found this book. It's an easy read and really informative.I was a bit nervous when thinking about pregnancy and it really eased my nerves. It spells out what you need, how much you need, and where to get it. This book was worth the money and then some!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
The book is okay and somewhat informative but does not offer any true guidance as to what should a vegeterian woman eat during pregnancy. Very dissapointed. Waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected
This entire book is in Question & Answer format, which I find rather annoying. It was written by an obstetrician, and contains far too much general info about pregnancy. I have other books for that; I was expecting only information about nutrition from this book. The actual information and tables related to nutrition are the best part of this book, but comprise far too few pages relative to the whole thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay book
I didn't really like it and didn't find it helpful. Maybe if you're new to vegetarianism and scared it might reassure you. Being a pregnant vegetarian is no different than being a pregnant meat eater. Just eat healthy foods and you're good to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really useful.
It really didn't help. I have other pregnancy books that weren't veggie, that gave the same information. ... Read more
