Product Description
Did you know you were designed by nature to live to be an average age of 100? It is a common fact that an animal lives to be five times his maturity age. A horse matures at four years and easily lives to be 20. A cow matures at two and one-half years and easily lives to be 12. A dog matures at one and one-half years and easily lives to be over eight. Man is an animal, but the average man in the United States who matures at 20 will die in his 70’s. That’s more than 20 years before his time. Short lives, senility, obesity, excessive disease, especially cancer and heart disease, are not a part of nature’s plan. Modern medicine is directed mainly at curing diseases―diseases man should never have in the first place! The author believes that obesity is too often a visible revelation of inward sickness and deterioration. If we could curtail the causes of deterioration and premature death, obesity would automatically diminish.Over seventy percent of all deaths in the United States are prematurely caused by heart disease and cancer. Diet is a major factor in many of these latest findings of the National Cancer Institute and the National Heart Association. There is a striking parallel in their suggested diets. It’s obvious that there are basic ground rules that all of us should follow. If we break these rules, we suffer the penalties. Our bodies demand a balance of nutritional foods to sustain healthful longevity and ideal weight control. You can control your weight, your health, and your destiny. You can change your eating habits for life and live longer. ... Read more

Product Description
A powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart disease therapy.

Based on the groundbreaking results of a twenty-year nutritional study by Dr. Esselstyn, a preeminent researcher and clinician, this book illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. The proof lies in the incredible outcomes for patients who have followed Dr. Esselstyn's program, including a number of patients in his original study who had been told by their cardiologists that they had less than a year to live. Within months of starting the program, Dr. Esselstyn's patients began to improve dramatically, and twenty years later, they remain free of symptoms.

Complete with more than 150 delicious recipes, this book explains the science behind the simple plan that has drastically changed the lives of Dr. Esselstyn's patients forever. It will empower readers to take control of their heart health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligently and compassionately written
I won't go into details about this book. But what I will say is that I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in maintaining lifelong health. This book is about reversing heart disease. But what is good for the heart is also good for the brain, the blood, all your organs, your joints, your lungs. All my life, I've read books on diet and health. The end result from all the reading was confusion. This book along with The China Study put an end to that confusion. They are clear in their instructions and thorough in their research. The facts are irrefutable.A life free of the diseases of affluence is attainable.I wish I could get everyone I know and love to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuff your doctor won't tell you
I read this book after hearing President Bill Clinton talk on CNN about Dr. Esselstyn and why he went on a plant-based diet for his heart disease. This book really lays out the research: what you may think is "healthy" (i.e. olive oil, "low-fat" milk, or cholesterol of 200) is not. Or as Esselstyn puts it, "moderation kills." I have been gradually growing and eating more fruits and vegetables, but this book really gave me reasons to go all the way, and try cutting out eggs, dairy, and oils.
Although I don't have heart disease (yet), I do hope to grow old with my agility and wits intact and the author lays out reasons why this way of eating could help, while addressing some of the myths about vegan diets.
The book also has a good selection of recipes from the author's wife, Ann, that are easy to make and delicious. They also don't depend on a lot of fake meat, which I hate. Although his regime may seem strict at first, it's not that radical if you already like and cook with a lot of veggies. I find that I don't have to grocery shop as often because I don't have as many things that spoil quickly in my refrigerator--a benefit that isn't mentioned in the book, but is a big plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars totally surprised
I was prepared to consign myself to misery and blah food when I ordered this book thinking it was something I had to do to get healthy with middle age and high cholesterol.I was shocked to discover this is not "just another crazy diet" but a very rewarding and even satisfying life change. For the first time in my life I am losing weight at a reasonable rate of 2 lbs. per week and I am never starving or craving foods I cannot have.I wish I had done this 20 years ago.Hot flashes? Gone...interupted sleep patterns? GoneSeveral inches? Gone.I feel confident, radiant and actually healthy for the first time in I can't remember when and I have only been doing it for a month. Can't wait to see what happens after a year!

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY HELPED ME
THIS BOOK HELPED ME COPE WITH HEART DISEASE.IT WORKS FOR HEART HEALTH AND ITS DIET REQUIREMENTS ARE OUTSTANDING.
THIS BOOK GIVES SPECIFICS THAT YOU CAN USE IMMEDIATELY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book made a difference to me.
I have already had a heart attack and two more stents six years after my attack. My daughter told me about this book so I got it from my local library first.I decided it was time to try a new approach to eating since I didn't want to have another episode or more stents.
I read this book with great interest and found the diet changes to be very helpful in my weight loss of over 30 pounds so far.I'll admit I don't follow the guidelines to the letter, but I am guessing the reduction in my consumption of meat, eggs and dairy played a big part in my weight loss.My only exercise has been walking despite a having knee replacement too.
I decided I wanted to order the book after seeing all of the recipes included. They are tasty & simple and I wanted to be able to make them again.
If you're interested in healthy eating changes and weight reduction, I recommend this book. ... Read more

Based on his internationally acclaimed scientific study, which has now been ongoing for years, Dr. Ornish's program has yielded amazing results. Participants reduced or discontinued medications; their chest pain diminished or disappeared; they felt more energetic, happy, and calm; they lost weight while eating more; and blockages in coronary arteries were actually reduced.

In his breakthrough book, Dr. Ornish presents this and other dramatic evidence and guides you, step-by-step, through the extraordinary Opening Your Heart program, which is winning landmark approval from America's health insurers. The program takes you beyond the purely physical side of health care to include the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects so vital to healing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by my Cardio-Rehab Nurses
I was introduced to this at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Facility I go to.I have had a stent put in.I am reading this book, starting to follow the recommendations, and have found it extremely helpful.I'm not very good yet, but this is an excellent guide, and my path to health is starting to improve as I start to follow these guidelines.I certainly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Got bored reading it
Honestly I was put off by the first few chapters of this book because the author seemed to be "selling" his qualifications to the readers. He spends too much time citing his references and detailing the studies that others have done. All of that should have been summarized in the appendix at the back of the book rather than stuffing the first few chapters with those details. After reading the first few chapters I put the book down and have not gone back to it. The book is quite thick and there is ten times more in it than I have read so far. Undoubtedly he is a smart doctor and knows his stuff, but I found his writing style too wordy. As Sgt. Joe Friday from the 1950's TV series "Dragnet" would have said, "Just the facts ma'am."

5-0 out of 5 stars reversing heart disease
I am currently on this complete change in my way of eating and I feel better and i am losing weight.

It is very difficult to stay on this diet, after a lifetime of eating steaks, bacon, sausage and eggs etc. But i am slowly adapting to this new way of of eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars sometimes older is better with proven results!
this guy has a excellent take on healthy heart and has been researched and his methods PROVEN with patients whom are alive well and improved; and avoided heart transplants even. So it really DOES work as it DID work back then; and is STILL working for others. I loved the book as it has both method-how too; and what to do -and receipts I just cannot believe this book isn't EVERYWHERE being RE released and endorsed.Saw this man on Dr. Oz was shocked I could find this on amazon and at such a excellent price. Really APPRECIATED it from this vendor will-be back.

Product Description
Would you like to save yourself the indignity, inconvenience and foul taste of modern diet fads? Are you sick and tired of frittering away your money on heart medications that leave you feeling more wretched than ever?Do you spend frequent, precious hours jogging or pounding away at the gym?And despite all of this effort, are you still fatter and weaker than you want to be?

Then it’s time to abandon the Modern Gospel of low-fat food and long-duration exercise as a path to heart health. We need the very opposite, says Al Sears, M.D. in The Doctor’s Heart Cure.According to Dr. Sears, heart disease continues to be America’s biggest killer – and obesity has reached epidemic proportions – because of the fad for low-fat diets and despite aerobics.

Your heart’s salvation lies in reengineering the diet and exercise habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to fit our modern culture. What does this entail? To build a strong and resilient heart, says Dr. Sears, engage in brief, explosive bouts of intense exercise. Consume a diet rich in high quality fat, pasture-fed meat, free-range dairy, wild-caught fish and liberal helpings of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Avoid grain-based starches as best you can. And take appropriate supplements to counteract the nutritional deficiencies of modern produce.

As Director of The Center for Health and Wellness, an integrative medicine and anti-aging clinic in south Florida, Dr. Sears has used this plan to help more than 15,000 patients successfully reverse heart disease, build stronger hearts, manage their weight and abandon their heart medications. In The Doctor’s Heart Cure, for the first time, Dr. Sears reveals his entire, proven program, so you too can safely build an impregnable heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening Information
The Information is this book will OPEN anyones eyes...Dr. Sears gives information most Doctors don't understand-and sometimes dont want to understand-because they are to conditioned to think otherwise-...Bottom line is traditional healthcare...and traditional "Heart care" and exercise- fall short ...WHY ?...read this book...The Information (Research) in this book does NOT come from Dr. Sears..he is simply writing about it (Thankfully)--Although -he does offer info on how this research benefits his patients..this information and research has been around for decades,...DECADES people !...The real question is not "Does this information work "..but--"Why don't MORE doctors know about this ??" ...Harvard School of medicine has KNOWN about this information for years..and has research to PROVE it....Dr. Sears has just written a book about it..and tells you WHY it works with his patients...The Supplements are nutritional supplements(Added to diet)...He explains what is most important to take and WHY...Is he anti-Drug ? NO !!..he Knows drugs can and do save lives...But when a person's body is out of Crisis..How do they go about rebuilding it ?...and WHY ...Dr. Sears is against the abuse of Pharma Drugs...which is all to common in our Healthcare System...The information in this book is USED in other countries and has been FOR YEARS !( ex. Coq10 Ubiquinol form)..For Heart ENERGY...and healthy organs etc....None of the supplements have side effects..except a better feeling body...I have recommended this book to people, friends and family that have had heart issues, health issues,..or are just looking to get more fit and healthy....and everyone is happily surprised to find they feel better,..if not great- in a short amount of time... The information in this book..Must read for ANYONE- especially thosewho HAVE tried everything,..those looking for another way--and those KNOWING there "Has to be another way"...Thankfully someone has written about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I bought this book because it was mentioned in one of my mothers many (but very interesting) natural health newsletters. I'm working my way through but personally dont typically read this type of information and am finding it hard to get through all the "study" work. But continue to go through it as I am in strong agreement with the over all summary of the book written in the natural health newsletter which was a large amount of exercise is actually stressful to the body and produces the same chemical reaction in the body as stress. By adding a small amount of exercise each day that is equal to approximately the same amount of "natural" exercise we would get if we were not sitting at our desks all day is truly what the body needs to work properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
I am very pleased with the informaion in this book from Dr. Sears. My husband having had a 5-bypass over 13 years ago and being told to be prepared to be on the table w/in 10 years again, we have done everything natural that we could find in the library and over the internet. We are very careful w/exercise, diet and common-sense issues. We are following much of the advice within this book and feel it will add to our books that we use for our overall heart health.Thank you DeniseJ. ... Product Description
It's hard to believe you're dying when you feel fit and fine...but millions of Americans are harboring unaware a condition that can rob them or kill them outright--hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, the most common form of heart disease. Even when hypertension is diagnosed, treatment is usually based on drugs, most with dismal side effects, expensive, and of limited usefulness.

Really effective treatment of hypertension calls for getting at the cause--which, Dr. Eric Braverman has found, often relates to poor diet, elevated cholesterol, excess weight, stress, and biochemical imbalances. With Dr. Braverman's 30- to 90-day program, patients have lowered their blood pressure and, in some case, even reversed the course of existing heart disease.

Based on extensive research and long clinical experience, Dr. Braverman's program can open the way to the longer and better-enjoyed life that high blood pressure and heart disease are silently waiting to steal from us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
As someone who has suffered from hypertension since I was 26 years old, had an adrenalectomy to correct a potassium imbalance that did not correct my hypertension, I am a believer that there must be natural ways to cure disease. This book repeated some of the other schools of though about curing hypertension naturally, but also shared Dr. Braverman's natural supplementation that he uses at his clinic.I took this book to my Internist who is familiar with my struggle to control my hypertension, and I asked her to read the book and come up with a supplementation protocol for me.My doctor reported that she enjoyed the book as it had reminded her of some of the nutrition themes she had learned in medical school. We worked together on a supplementation for my treatment of hypertension.I wish I could afford to go to Dr. Braverman's clinic in New York, but until then I will follow the guidelines on eating, exercise and natural supplementation in this book.I have not yet weaned myself off of hypertension medication, but I have been able to resist adding more medication, which does not make me better, but only more dependent on chemicals to cure disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for heart disease
This is a very good book on how to take care of your heart. Natural way to help improve your heart. Easy to read, lots of good advice. Recomend

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this for everyone
This book gives so much information that is easy to understand and easy to put to use in your life. Even if someone doesn't have heart disease this would still be a healthy way to eat and live your life. The recipes are very tasty and easy to make. Drugs certainly are not the only answer in reducing cholesterol or high blood pressure. This book has helped us in just the first month of using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting!
This is an interesting book, and hard to believe.

It could use more case histories.Surely, they are available. Also, the case histories included do not seem to follow the supplement program recommended. The reasons for such deviations, when not obvious, could be detailed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Drugs are Not the Answer to Heart Disease
What a wonderful idea Dr. Braverman promises - "REVERSE HEART DISEASE, Naturally" with his "30- to 90-Day No-More hypertension and Heart Disease Program" in 198 pages. Who is Eric Braverman? As founder and Director of PATH Medical (the Place for achieving Total Health) in New York City he's "considered one of America's most innovative physicians" according to his publisher Basic Health.

Updating his 1996 research by adding daughter Dasha Braverman's RAINBOW DIET (choosing the right fresh colorful fruits and vegetables) the results to be expected are a "Drug-free, robust life" in one year.

So you ask - How can you do it? Well, Braverman says you can:

Lower blood pressure to 120/80 - 135/85.
Triglycerides and cholesterol to below 200 and increase HDL to above 50.
Discontinue all beta-and alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors.

Just replace with his Special Formula's number 1 to 14.

Then, Reduce Stress with Cranial Electric Stimulation (CES) by sending gentle electrical signals to the vagus nerve in your brain with his RELAX-MATE, a TENS - a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation unit, for 15-60 minutes a day to release GABA and acetylcholine in your brain because it's biofeedback like training for self control and peace of mind.

All that can help you to "break addictive food habits and destructive behaviors". Dr. Braverman defines depression "as anger turned inward" and suggests emotions "contribute to blockages in the large vessels supplying blood to the brain." New science that`s easy to follow and easy to use.

With this book anyone ought to be able to "Reverse Heart Disease -Naturally!"

Product Description
The connection between inflammation and heart disease, arthritis, and other chronic ailments has become increasingly clear. Many food allergies and poor dietary choices overstimulate the immune system and cause inflammatory responses that erode the body’s wellness and pave the path for ill health. Based on her naturopathic practice, Jessica Black has devised a complete program for how to eat and cook to minimize and even prevent inflammation and its consequences. The first part of the book explains the benefits of the anti-inflammatory diet with an accessible discussion of the science behind it. The second half contains 108 recipes. The author offers many substitution suggestions and includes a healthy ingredient tip with each recipe. Most of the dishes can be prepared quickly and easily by even novice cooks. A week of sample menus for summer months and another for winter are included, as well as a substitutions chart, allowing readers to modify their favorite recipes to increase their healing potential. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd had this book 50 years ago!
I studied everything I could find on keeping my family healthy according to the best available information at the time, and I practiced what I learned.I thought I was doing pretty well, but with the information in this book, I could have done even better! Fewer meds and more of the right kinds of foods (non-inflammatory)would have been very helpful. Anyone who is concerned about health for whatever reason could benefit.I certainly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
This is a great book everyone should read and Amazon.com is the best place to purchase it. THANKS for a seamless transaction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as well-researched or current as I had hoped
This book is an OK starting resource for those who know little or nothing aobut nutrition, but I was hoping for a one-stop resource that would concisely and accurately summarize the current research on diet and inflammation, and this is not it. While it does contain a list of references at the back, the many controversial assertions (such as drinking absolutely massive amounts of water, and avoiding all nightshade vegetables including tomatoes and spinach, which are very high in documented health benefits)are not footnoted and supported by specific research. The discussion portion of the book is only 54 pages and contains little one couldn't find with a quick internet search. While the recipes look tasty, they take up the rest of the 225 pages and I have plenty of other cook books. Also, while the author gives a few general tips about nutrition, she doesn't mention the research on turmeric, which is perhaps the most promising anti-inflammatory spice, and she doesn't mention other important areas of research such as the effects of low aspirin doses and the extremely important relationship between inflammation and gum disease. I will be looking further.

4-0 out of 5 stars some good recipes
This is an interesting and well written book. I wanted to get some easy starter recipes for the anti-inflammation diet and they have turned out better than I expected in most cases. The Easy Pancakes were easy to make - not so easy to eat! But the Hearty Healthy cookies are pretty darn good and the Sweet Potato soup was delicious! I would say that the few days that I've tried to stick to the Anti-inflammation diet - I do think I had less aches and pains.Unfortunately, I haven't worked at it like I should. The author provides all the information you need, reasons to do it, and a variety of easy recipes to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for patients
Dr. Jessica Black has eloquently explained how the food we eat can affect and is paramount our health and our well-being. Her eating plan is easy to implement, and all the recipes I've tried so far are delicious.I will definitely recommend this book as a resource for my patients.

Thank you!

Nice book to browse through. Tried two recipes...
nothing special.I would loan this from the library
for a look see and then return.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Omega 3 Recipe Book
My reading convinced me that an Omega 3 rich diet would be a good thing for me.Once I decided to change my diet, I looked over a number of pertinent books on the subject and ordered three:one on the diet itself; two on recipes.Of the two recipe books this was far and away the better book. The recipes are down to earth and varied.Everyone should find some recipes in this book that will get them started on the Omega 3 diet.I was especially impressed with the introduction of the book which, while short, is packed with information about the diet in general and the importance of balancing the Omega3 to Omega 6 fat ratio. The body of the work is organized by meal type:breakfast; lunches & light meals; snacks; dinners; and desserts. Each menu has its own page and in the margins each has a breakout informing you of the number of servings it makes, the ingredients providing the Omega 3 sources, nutritional facts per portion, and what to serve with the recipe, how long to make, and how to store. Each page/recipe is presented in the same simple, yet fact filled, way.Even the cover (front and back) is designed with flaps that can be used as bookmarks to hold open to a recipe in the kitchen.I recommend this as an excellent Omega 3 recipe book to introduce you to the diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flax Oil - Great Book
Excellent book, I recommended it to all my family.Everyone should read it and change their eating style.

5-0 out of 5 stars TO LEARN THE HEALING PROTOCOL... GET THE DVD!
If you are looking to learn and understand the COMPLETE PROTOCOL used by Dr. Budwig to heal thousands of cancer patients, then check out the amazon link below.
A Day in the Budwig Diet - Learn the complete home healing protocol to prevent and heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease & more

You will learn that "Yes, It's not just adding Flax Oil to ones diet", but all of her guidelines must be followed precisely, which are explained on the DVD. The body will then quickly begin to heal. The books do not explain the protocol.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different Approach
Dr.Budwig has a sterling reputation in the scientific world; her fidings are presented in a clear, comprehensive manner. This is serious reading even for the lay person. Perhaps specially for the lay person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important lectures from an innovative scientist and healer
This volume contains the text of 3 lectures given by Dr Budwig in 1959, 1976 and 1972.They present insights into the foundations of the philosophy and science behind her successful treatment of cancer over a 50-year period with her Oil-Protein diet.

As a blood specialist and biochemist Dr Budwig understood cancer as a fat problem. In these lectures she asserts that electron-rich seed oils (especially flax oil) combined with a sulpherated protein can re-activate the body's vital functions. She discusses the nature of sunlight, its relation to the human organism and how the sun's energy is stored in a concentrated form in these electron-rich seed oils. She discusses this in relation to quantum physics.

The treatment of fats and oils to make them keep longer alters their molecular structure and creates problems which can result in serious illnesses. The healing of such illnesses is therefore dependent on dietary and lifestyle alterations, in particular on the ingestion of the "good fats" (properly bonded with the protein) and the complete elimination of the "bad fats".

This little book by one of the world's most innovative scientists offers hope to those who are suffering serious illness. It is based upon an holistic but scientific understanding of the human being and offers a convincing explanation (and solution) for some of the main degenerative diseases that have been the curse of humanity throughout the 20th Century.

Her other works currently in English translation are "Cancer: The Problem and the Solution" and "The Oil-Protein Diet Cookbook" which offer further science and practical recipes respectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little book with lots of information
This small book is full of chemistry and physics of metabolic electrons and photons, and the benefit of flax seed oil when combined with a protein to make it water soluble in the system.

There are definitive sections on Sunlight as the energy source for all living things-if they are healthy; and if they are not they do not derive the great benefit.

There is a section on Oxygen since it is necessary for all the processes in living persons.A decrease in oxygen decreases vitality and longevity.

Overall you will have to read and digest this book because of the chemistry and physics the author talks about, and this material is mostly what was presented to fellow scientists.

As a wellness practitioner I found this book to reinforce my already confirmed knowledge about flax seed oil but it goes further and explains the electron basis for these things.

The author is one of a handful of people who studied fats and oils in the body, or more accurately how they act in the body.

If you are a student of nutrition and supplements, a wellness doctor, or in a related field, this small text will surprise you with the density of facts and knowledge you will obtain.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sinatra.
After discovering I had a very serious heart arythmia, I went on a quest to find information on how I could treat the root of my condition instead of just taking drugs (that had serious side effects). This book has literally changed my life. I currently am doing very well using what I learned from this book and drinking a Hawthorne Berry tea. This book is very deep, authentic and comprehensive. I have no ties to the author and I must say that if you know anyone with a heart condition who is willing to do some self examination, this book will give them incredibly important and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great credentials - interesting points - makes you think
Dr. Sinatra is both a cardiologist and a psychologist, a rare and useful combination. The thesis of this book is stated way back on page 239:

"My patients have taught me so much about the preciousness of life. If you want to heal or prevent heart disease, the first step is recognitiono fold wounds, losses and your emotional reactions to them. The next stepis mobilizing those trapped energies and feelings and discharging them inways that are nurturing to your heart.Following a healthy lifestyle isanother significant step toward obtaining optimum health. The final stepin healing is to realize the profound depth of spirituality and how heartdisease can, indeed, be a messenger of something more."

His objectivesare to answer his questions listed in his Preface as follows: 1) To whatextent do emotional factors and one's own intrinsic personality play a partin heart disease? 2) Are suppressed feelings and emotions significant? 3)Donegative feelings such as abandonment, heartbreak, betrayal or humiliationcreate conditions that invite death? 4) What do positive emotions such aslove, faith, and good humor play in the process of healing and stayingwell? 5) What is the significance of the way we breathe?

Dr. Sinatratakes us through his medical training and explains his reasons for pursuinga degree in psychology. As the above selection says, he emphasizes therole of heartbreak and loss in the child to the eventual heart diseasedadult. He explains the concept of narcissistic injury, how thenarcissistic parent inflicts it on the child, and the consequences in lateryears.

He prescribes his heart disease reversal program which is basedon established findings in cardiology, but also on his training andknowledge as a bioenergetic psychologist. His program seems a little outof the ordinary since it resembles alternative medicine, but he describesit in a way that makes sense.

The only shortcoming of this book, in myopinion, is his case histories since they do not seem to relate to hispoints very well. They could be omitted or put in an appendix.

As aheart patient, I learned much from this book, and recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
What even your doctor may not know about the real heart attack risk factors and what you can do to prevent heart disease now.

You count your cholesterol, monitor your fat and sodium consumption, and get regular exercise. But consider these facts: Many people who have heart attacks have cholesterol counts below 200. Low-fat diets can actually raise the heart attack risk in some people. And the wrong kind of exercise can do your heart more harm than good. Now for the good news: You can do something about it, and this book shows you how.

Recent research has revealed that the real risks are a combination of factors that you-and your doctor-may never have heard of, including the crucial differences between cholesterol types and much, much more. In The Heart Disease Breakthrough, Thomas Yannios, M.D., explains the state-of-the-art medical research and the science behind the latest breakthroughs in testing, diagnosis, nutrition, and exercise. And he presents a clear, easy-to-follow 10-step program for counteracting your individual risk factors and attaining optimum heart health.

"For those seriously concerned a with preventing heart disease, this is your guide: detailed, current, strongly worded guidelines. Yannios. . . isn't interested in cushioning the facts or the remedies in a feel-good framework. . . . Guidelines are set out here involving diet, weight control, exercise, and medication. Yannios doesn't let readers off easily, but that doesn't mean he can't offer realistic help: for instance, practically every cardiac risk factor can be countered by exercise; it just has to be the right type of exercise. Heart disease prevention is among the fastest-advancing medical research areas, with new, often conflicting recommendations being published daily. For those at serious risk, this is an understandable, serious, and worthwhile approach." - Kirkus Reviews ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.

I've read a number of books on preventing heart disease and this one is reccomended because it gives extremely important information you will not find in magazine articles, brochures, or other books. It goes into excellent detail on diet and exercise. The only reason why I think these facts aren't better known is that the extra complexity would confuse some people and cause a few to not to adopt low fat diets which is beneficial to most people.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first book to tell the lipoprotein story
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.

5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff in this book.
Just intensely interesting and highly informative material that is presented perfectly. This information will motivate you to make the changes in your life necessary for good health - and not through "scare tactics".

It's difficult for me to comprehend how anyone who reads this book can come away with a negative opinion that results in a bad review.

I only wish that I had come into possession of this knowledge at an earlier date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, some risky advice
It is encouraging that Dr. Yannios rejects many of the conventional (and incorrect) approaches to heart disease prevention. There have been no studies that conclusively link high blood cholesterol, high dietary cholesterol, high dietary fat, or high blood triglycerides to heart disease.(For more on this, see Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's excellent book "The Cholesterol Myths.")I was pleased particularly pleased to see him mention that many people who have heart disease have normal cholesterol. In fact, nearly half of the patients in the Framingham heart study who died of coronary disease had blood cholesterol under 220!

I am, however, concerned that Dr. Yannios seems to be so concerned with atherosclerosis as a cause of heart disease. As Dr. Ravnsknov's book shows, there is no evidence that atherosclerosis causes heart disease, nor is there any evidence that high blood cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. And without that evidence, it is plainly risky to treat otherwise healthy patients with expensive cholesterol-lowering drugs that may have serious short- and long-term side effects, simply because they have preatherosclerotic streaks in their arteries.Even fetuses have such streaks.Should we give newborns cholesterol lowering drugs? If so, I am going to go sink all my money into pharmaceutical stocks.

I say, read this book, but read it skeptically.Do not go out and ask your doctor to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs for you, especially if your cholesterol is normal.Go to a good library and read the journal articles on cholesterol and heart disease yourself, including the numbers.(Summaries can and do lie!)Read the clinical trials of cholesterol lowering drugs to discover the side effects of these drugs, and ask yourself whether, if you are currently healthy, you want to live a life riddled with those side effects in the name of your "health."Read a book on statistics so you'll understand what is and is not statitistically significant. And read "The Cholesterol Myths."

5-0 out of 5 stars Have an MI, then BUY THIS BOOK
I had an MI at the age of 36 (ouch).Since then I've tried to keep up to date on all the real, important research about heart disease causes and prevention.Trust me, you don't want to have a *second* MI.

This book takes all the important stuff you need to know and gives it to you in a form you can understand.Better than that, you can take *action*.Action that is tailored to *YOU*.

Both my GP and my Cardiologist knew less about all the risk factors than I did.We did the super-low-fat diet thing and they wanted to treat my lipids with *only* statins. This book has helped me educate them and given me what I need to advocate for myself.I'm know doing everything I can for my *specific* risk factors.

My diet is now low in carbohydrate. My doctors, of course had put me on an ultra-low-fat diet, which, for me (and for 25% of the U.S. population), was *exactly the wrong thing*.When I went on a high-protein, low carb, moderate fat diet my lipids ***greatly*** improved (oh yah and I lost 30 pounds).

Given my lipids, I know now that Niacin *and* statins are the right choice for my profile (I had an LDL-GGE test recommended in the book).

Hey I just had a thought...maybe *you* should buy this book *before* you have an MI... ... Read more
