4-0 out of 5 stars Dense, but Decent
I like histology, but this text just didn't match my learning style.

Pros:
1. The cd was a little useful, but don't get your hopes up. It's the same "plate" images provided in the text with an ability to enlarge them.
2. Organized fairly well.
3. I haven't found many errors

Cons:
1. Too dense. Honestly there is considerably more information provided in this text than what's needed in medical school.
2. The text also lacks any type of end of chapter summary/review or quiz questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars med school histo
Great book for my purposes, lots of images, details where they are needed and broad range of info.

1-0 out of 5 stars Long Chapters With Not Much Substance
This book is our textbook at the med school. It does not really cover the material that we need to know, while there are a lot of other things there that we don't need to study for our class. It is also not a well-written text that you can read fast and at the same time make connections between the materials that you read. I use Basic Histology by Junqueira, which is more compact in size and delivers more useful info for medical histology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Text
Understanding histology, especially histology of diseases, is essential for success in medical school. I found the chapters on the immune system organs to be most helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Masterful Use of Netter
I have had Netter's copy of Anatomy for decades I believe. It is a beautiful work of art and science. This book is also another contribution using his brilliant work.

It uses the Netter drawings to provided a basis for the structure and then combines this with light microscope and electron microscope slides. The text is all in color and it is of the highest quality.

There is no histopathology in the text and that might have been useful for medical students. The discussions are by the normal sections of cells; blood, bone, muscle and by organ. It is longer than most texts of this type and if you studied histology in the dark ages of poor quality black and white photos this is worth the purchase just to see how things are being taught now.

There are several things I would have like to see such as the use of stains and the preparation of slides but in today's world that has become a technician's task. Yet a great deal can be learned from these techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR ACING MED SCHOOL HISTOLOGY!
This book is comprehensive, informative and an excellent resource for medical school histology. Easy to read and makes histology interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good one
this book sucks compared to the last older edition, but our professor made us buy it. So I got it great, thanks Amazon, it's wonderful. but BOOO to the writers who didn't take good pictures this time around

5-0 out of 5 stars Good pics, only the text you need
This book is an excellent beginner histology text. It has well labeled pics of just about anything you will need to recognize under the microscope as a 1-3 year vet student. The online version is also handy in class if you have wireless internet available because then you don't have to lug an extra book around! It is a book that I plan on keeping in my personal library. The best part is that the text is only there to explain what you are seeing in the photos, rather than having the photos as a support for the text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Histology
Wheater's Functional Histology: A Text and Colour Atlas, 5th Edition really helped me out in both my Histology Lecture class and Histology Lab class. if you take up any kind of Histology or maybe even microbiology this book is a great buy to help serve as a reference and a study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy and straight to the point
Just excellent!!! At med school you have very little time to assimilate your readings...This book helps a lot in summarizing lectures and Histology textbooks!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars All You'll Need for Microanatomy
I admit, I'm a bit biased here because for my Microanatomy class we were assigned Gartner & Hiatt's Color Textbook of Histology.Since they wrote this as well, it was a great companion to the textbook. In fact, the organization is essentially (if not exactly) identical, & in this format you're given everything you need to study in under 20 pages rather than in several long chapters. This book was a lifesaver for me.I used it in conjunction with BRS Phys - get the physiology down pat, then completing the story by going through all the different cell types discussed in this book. It's a fast, clear read with some great clinical correlations at the end of each chapter. My only complaint would be that the review questions tend to focus solely on the page or so of CCs at the end & less on the concepts presented in the outlines. If you have a Cell Bio course separate from your Micro or Histo course (as I did), I don't know if the Cell Bio coverage (only 3 chapters) will be sufficiently in depth, but what's there is definitely high yield.Bottom line - you'll definitely want this book if you're using G&H's text.If not, I thought it was a great (& fast) review book for the NBME, & ultimately worth the money regardless of your assigned text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of BRS Cell Biology & Histology
I think that this book is an ok review book, but a bit to superficial to use when learning histology.I recommend purchasing a larger text book to learn histology... I wish I had. The students in my class that read larger histology text books did much better in histology and subsequently pathology than I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Kaplan's review for Histology.
A must have. Really important and understandable facts in the light of USMLE. I'm reading some other books on this subject too, and I have inferred that this one is very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for Histology
This book is broken into systems and has nice board related pathology info at the end of each chapter. Exp: The Chapter on Neuro Histology will give you a clear understanding of the histo, physio, and then give pathology examples such as what happens when there is demyelination->MS.

I was never taught histology, but this book is so well laid out, I could make the correlation between histo, phys, and path. Excellent resource if you want to understand histo in a short period of time. I see where other people say it's not high-yield enough. That may be true. But what's the point of memorizing specific details if you don't understand the big concepts they pertain to. If you have a strong background in histo then I would recommend something else.

I just feel this book has made me understand phyio and path so much better. It's like biochem. Gives you better insight on the mechanisms of pathophys. I was very disappointed with BRS Phys, but BRS Cell Bio and Histo is the real deal. I would scrap BRS Phys and just buy the Histo one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed
Was searching high and low on a textbook on Microscopic Anatomy. All have been a disappointment, but this one.
It has colored pictures, that are clearly labeled, and a breakdown on the different tissues of the body in an organized and easy to read manner.
The only thing lacking is that it is weak with mentioning the epithelium in the different types of tissues. But overall it is a perfect companion to my lecture.
Be warned it is not an Histology atlas, is more of a read with some pictures, a textbook.
Very pleased with purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images and layout

Powerpoint presentations for the chapters can be found on-line for users of the text.

I liked the paperback binding and the quality of the paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW...they shipped it super fast!!
Could not be more pleased. the book was brand new, and they shipped it REALLY fast. i got it literally 3 days after i ordered it. Would HIGHLY recommend this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars SHELF
I used this book to review for the SHELF, and I found it very useful. I am even planning on using it as one of the resources to study for the USMLE 1. I highly recommend this book, they are short, easy to read and they have good practice questions after each chapter to test your knowledge on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than BRS or High Yield for quick review!
I used this book as an MS1 and it got me through class- now I am going back and using it for a quick read in my Board review. Although I haven't taken the Boards yet, I believe this is the book to have for this subject. I also own the High Yield Histo but it lacks detail and BRS is way too thick to go through it for reviewing a low yield subject like Histo.
If you do have the time BRS would be better but if you are like me and running out time fast- then stick to Road Maps

The above was my review prior to the Boards. Now looking back i stand by it. Histo is not a very high yield subject. So just pop this book open for two full days of studying for the Board and move on to a more significat subject such as path (which is at least 60-70% of the exam)

4-0 out of 5 stars I like the clinical correlations.
I haven't finished reading this book, yet. And I haven't taken the step 1 exam, either. However, I really like this book. So I will write a brief review now. Be the first that I can be. ;)

The best part about the road map books is that it has clinical correlations. And I am surprised that there can be so many clinical correlations from the beginning of the first charpter. It is like a short review for pathology at the same time. And because of that, it made reading much more interesting than just reading basic concepts which can get boring quickly. I also like the format and wording. I just finished reading the high yield immunology, that one was so hard to read because those two authors tend to write long sentences without any coommas. This author's wording is short and easy to understand.

One thing that this book needs to improve is to get more pictures. After all, it is a histology book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Histology
This book is very informational. It has alot of information needed by students and is also very helpful in identifying cell structures that are seen on histologic slides after staining.
I use it daily while QC'ing slides after H&E staining.

1-0 out of 5 stars eh
I still havent received the book and its been about month...its taking forever to get here and i needed the book like 3 weeks ago

5-0 out of 5 stars Great basic text with lots of good images
I purchased this text for a course in histology that had no assigned text, and have been very pleased with the book. There is also a DVD of images which is a little hard to work with, but helpful once you get the hang of it. there are a number of different texts in the class, and this is the one we all rely on for identifying images in our lab sessions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a stand alone Histology Text
This book was required reading for histology class as an undergrad. It was not bad as far as strict histology went, however, in my opinion, this book is not very useful as a stand alone book.It seems it is designed to be read along with a histology atlas, or more importantly, a gross anatomy text. This book seems to assume that one already has some basic concept of gross anatomy and this book is most suited as a suppliment to anatomy. The writing in some places is hard to follow, and there are a few typo's.All in all, i would not recommend this text as a histology text if you are taking only histology. If however you are taking anatomy as well, this text may be sufficient.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook, but be aware of the limitations
I found this book to be a good introduction to histology. It is limited in two ways:The first is that it is truly 'Basic Histology'.This is a plus and a minus. On the plus side, the book resists the temptation to drown the student in a sea of detailed molecular and cellular biology.I think this was intentional, and they do a good job of cutting to the chase. On the minus side, too many of the images are of poor quality. As an instructor of this subject, I found it quite frustrating that some of the schematics (which are supposed to help me get my point across) were of such low resolution that they appeared out of focus on a powerpoint presentation. This is not acceptable in this era of digital imaging.I would use this book again, but only if the image problem is corrected. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars color atlas of histology

2-0 out of 5 stars didnt need it
When I was looking at reviews to see If I should buy this book last year, it would have been helpful if someone told me that this book is not going to be used very much, even as a reference. Your schools ppt/notes of histology should be sufficient to grasp the material, this atlas is superfluous.

I recommend this book for those who are seeking a basic introductory book to histology. The chapters and content have a nice flow, and illustrations complement the diagrams very well. There aren't a lot of special stains featured, but more focused on basic H&E.

3-0 out of 5 stars not a comprehensive guide to histology

Product Description

diFiore's Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations, Eleventh Edition, explains basic histology concepts through full-color, schematic illustrations. These illustrations are supplemented by more than 450 digitized full-color online photomicrographs of histological images. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their systems; Part Two addresses organs in a similar way.

Targeting undergraduate, allied health and first and second year medical students, the Eleventh Edition includes new and enhanced images through redrawing and digitization to provide increased detail. This edition also features updated illustrations and information on the functions of cells, tissues, and organs of the body based on advances in research and expert recommendations.

The atlas' student-friendly "Functional Correlations" sections help students study structure and function together. Students also benefit from a "realistic" perspective as more than 70 micrographs appear adjacent to color illustrations.

A companion Website offers student and instructor versions of diFiore's Interactive Atlas with all of the images from the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
I bought this book for my niece and she is absolutely tickled with the info for med school also that she is able to view the website is a bonus

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Histology
Good reference for microscopic anatomy. It is with sufficient text that explains topics. It's better if it had a hardbound version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't need the new edition
I am a medical student and I actually had the main author as my instructor - Victor Eroshenko.
The atlas is helpful, although the most helpful part is the CD.If you have histology lab as part of your course, the CD is helpful for giving tissue slides, labels, and descriptions. If you don't have a lab as part of your course, I'm not sure if this text is necessary.
I had the opportunity to look at the 2007 and the 2005 editions, and there doesn't seem to be much difference.Save yourself a lot of money and buy the tenth edition! ... Read more

Product Description

Now completely revised and updated, this ground-breaking text focuses on the borderland between histology and pathology. The text describes human histology and its variations, with emphasis on avoiding overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of normal variants. Presented by leading international specialists in thology, histopathology, anatomical pathology, surgical pathology, and neuropathology, the text is innovative, well organized and generously illustrated. Coverage includes the structure, composition, and function of tissues from a pathologic perspective; a systematic review of each major organ system, as well as structures of special significance; and histologic subtleties, such as unusual variations in staining reactions, little-known fixation artifacts, and frequently missed gross observations.

This edition is reorganized to better reflect an organ-system approach to histology. Immunohistochemical findings in normal tissues have been added, based on the latest antibody panels.

A bound-in CD-ROM image bank is included.

3-0 out of 5 stars Need to Improve your Packing Method
I received the book in a very timely manner. Thanks!BUT, the packaging caused the corner to be damaged.I returned it and received the 2nd book very quickly. Thanks again.BUT the packaging was the same and the corner was damaged!THis was to be a GIFT/Award for a graduate. There wasn't time to ask for another.Using cardboard with the corners cut off does not protect the book in shipping. You really need to look into this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Customer review
This book is actually (for those of you who haven't worked it out) the latest edition of that wonderful book first edited by Sternberg, entitled "Histology for Pathologists". It is an excellent reference book and I consider it to be essential reading for all trainee tissue pathologists. It is well set out and written in a fluid style. If you are thinking of buying it, just jump in and do it. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best tool for Medicine Students and First year Pathology residents
Im very pleased with my purchase and with the service provided by amazon. I'm really amazed.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource for under 200$
You are looking for a histology resource, probably as a pathologist or pathology resident. With a little modification, the third and updated edition of histology for pathologists may be the thing for you (if you have some time to read and tweak).
If you are looking for a "fast and furious" review, combine the histology sections of each chapter of Robbins and Rosai. However, if you really like histology - or feel that the knowledge of normal anatomy is the foundation to diagnose diseases, a more indepth review is required.
But: does histology change? or will the second edition do it?
The new version is really updated with many new color pictures and excellent makeover of the "not so colorfull" pictures in the older version. The main organ system structures stays the same and the apoptosis chapter from the 2nd edition is integrated in the different systems by site. All tables show a new, colored layout and even the myofibroblast chapter shines with multichannel immunohistochemistry. The big bonus is the included CD-Rom with almost all pictures from the book (including line-drawings).A nice option of the CD is to search by key-word (eg. endomterium pops up all figures with endometrium in the legend - a very nice feature) and all pictures can be downloaded for presentations. Two new figures about the sampling of the conduction system integrate gross sampling and histologic examination.
Summary - it's worth 160.
Now the tweaking.If you really want the ultimate resource you would have to go to the library, get the 2nd edition and copy/add the following pages/figures: Fig11.2, 86.2, 159.22, 259.23 293.7, 299.12, 306.19, 338.5, 340.6, 343, 345, 361, 362, 364, 435, 441, 533, 534, 664, 676, 684, 776, 800, 801, 802, 803, 827, 828, 1061 and 1134.Most of these are either classic figures not incorporated or modified in the new edition; some are simply better in black and white; and some are just old-school but still cool.
As a result you have a very complete histology text/atlas with updated references and a personal touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book was suggested to me by my University as part of the Histology curriculum of the General Med. program. It took me quite a while to understand that this is probably the best histology book there is, and I have 3 other books to prove it..

Some may find it diffucult to digest at the beginning, the middle and the end, like I had, but now I understand that Histology as a subject is hard and nothing more.
For a medical student there are other books out there, may be more consice and with more graphics, but if you want to excell in your Histo class, this is the book. Ross doesnt neglect anything! I found the illustrations sufficient and accompanied by short summaries of what was already mentioned and not mentioned in the text. They were exellent as a review of the material.
For those who find the graphics insufficient I would suggest buying an Atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Text, Needs more diagrams
This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject.
Advantages:
1.Lucid style in writing
2.Sentence type headings makes the essence of the following text very clear.
3.Most of the details that you need in the histology course could be found in this single volume.
4.Atlas is separately included in the end of every chapter other than the regular diagrams between the texts.
Disadvantages:
1.Lack of line diagrams- without a good number of line diagrams it would be difficult to grasp the material for a normal student like me.
2.No clear chapter outline in the beginning of each chapter. The Wheater's histology has an edge over this in this aspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I really felt that this text could have given a little more. You will need to buy an atlas to supplement the text, but I do like the explanations given with the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for my medical histology class
I found this book very helpful and packed with good info on histology. This book is quite thorough and is essential for any medical student taking a class in histology. The pictures are quite helpful because it was easier to identify simple epithelia verses squamous epithelia as one example. If you want a great study guide for the type of questions teachers ask get the following: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN; 0971999686)
The last book helped me to focus on the type of questions asked on my exams.I was recommended this book from a few friends who have already taken the class. They said it helped them get good grades.I guess they were right. With the help of these two books I did wonderfully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases. You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This
Stick to the histology Road Maps. Most of the High Yield Series is good except this one. The pictures and explanations leave too much room for wanting something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for usmle prep
This is not a typical histology book...in the sense that it contains, pharmacology, pathology, physiology and anatomy and very little histology and histopathology. The book is extremely HIGH YIELD for usmle but not for a class in histology. It covers topics ranging molecular biology of signal transduction to the coagulation cascade. First year medical students will not recognize much of the info in this book and think it is "fluff"....it is one of the best kept secrets to scoring high in the USMLE, since many of the questions aren't exactly pathology or physiology stand alone questions, rather they are a mixture and a blend of many subjects. This book does that for you, it integrates many..many concepts. Its a great buy for 2nd years.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so hot
this book is missing alot of information, especially if you are trying to use it for a course review. Some examples: no parotid, no tounge, no esophagus, no pineal, no tonsils. Also the figure captions are hard to read and the quality of the figures is only so so. All in all, not the greatest histology review book.

3-0 out of 5 stars You could probably do without this book
If you use First Aid for the the USMLE Step 1, you probably will not use this book. There is a lot of "low yield" information disperese throughout and it may not save you much time to filter through all of it to make it worth while. If you insist, read through it fast and note the clinically significant items in boldface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, must buy
I used this book and the following which is also on amazon: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
The first book is written in an easy style to make histology much easier to absorb for medical histology.I found this book to be righton for the topics I needed to know for my medical histology test.I also like how the material was presented; it was reader friendly and a very thorough review. The second book that I used for my medical histology class called:Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi was so on target with the type of questions asked on my histology exams.I highly recommend these two books to any medical histology students.I also wish I used these books when I took histology in undergrad.Anyway, I have brothers and sisters who have used these two books in other medical school histology classes and they got A's .Both books are must buys. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic and review text
This work is an excellent textbook or review source for tooth morphology, dental histology and embryology. The text is more geared for the education of hygienists than for dentists. The format is clear, to the point, yet it is quite comprehensive for its length. The sidebar clinical examples for the application of the accompanying topic are excellent and helps see the value of the topics covered.I have elected to use it as a text for a dental morphology course in hygiene school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speedy and straight to the point
This book is so good...! I bought the 4th edition. It helps a lot particularly in preparing for exams. It helps in filling the gap when you thought you knew what you need to know if you understand what I mean!!!!...By far I prefer it than the BRS which is not helping you in directing your reading when you need to master a concept. It saves me a lot on my study time by re-directing me from reading to mastery...If they had other ones like that for the other basic science subjects, I would not hesitate to buy...The only reason why I don't give it 5 stars it lacks in diagrams and colours. It is a bit abrupt which does not suit my learning style. I would be so grateful if they would add some colours to the charts and make it more fun with drawings, cartoons and colourful diagrams...

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than BRS Histology
I bought both this book and BRS Cell Biology and Histology for review and used them mainly as a source for practice questions.I found that the questions in this book is much better and more challenging than those in the BRS book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy Service, Good Product!
This seller did a very good job. The service was speedy, the book was well protected and in good condition as described. I will purchase other bookers from this seller and reccommend others to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Of Standards
The decision to buy this book is one of the most apt I have ever made in the medical school. Paulsen gives the rather abstract histology a vivid approach, that engulfs just what is required.

However , illustrations arelackingand because of its compactness, no sentence is to be ignored.Consequently , progress is not very significant and thusinappropriate torush through the day before the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best Histology book
Just for using human tissues this book is wonderful. Enough for monkey, pig, rat or horse tissues. Besides, the proposal of discarding the old classification of tissues and instead use now an cellular approach is very appropriate. And above all clear and precise descriptions. This book would be better with more mollecular details, and more information in morphology; but it ouststands many other books in the field.

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful.
I used this book as a first year medical student. It's just terrible. I have three main issues. First, the language is vague, confusing, and terminology is not consistent within the book. Second, the authors are single-handedly attempting to change medical terminology. As a med student, I couldn't care less about semantic battles of anatomists. All I want is the words defined AS THEY WILL BE USED ON BOARD EXAMS. This book does NOT provide that; instead, early in chapters, it says 'Older books (that is, every textbook ever published except this one) may use the word X, but we prefer the word Y because blah blah blah. So every time you see Y, mentally substitute X if you ever want to communicate with other people or read scientific literature.
And speaking of scientific literature, the authors apparently don't read it. There are multiple areas of questionable scientific validity and just plain misleading content-I know because I used several histology texts throughout, due to this one being so vague and simplistic.
The best text that I used was Histology: A text and atlas by Ross, 4th ed. Ross and Stevens directly contradict each other on many details, though, so if Stevens is used in your class, Ross won't help you pass your tests. It will, however, help for Boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for making histology easier to learn!!!
I'm a med student and found this text right enjoyable and an alternative easier to text to learning histology. The pictures are quite detailed, which is important especially for histology lab exams. The organ systems are explained in a clear matter without extremely hard vocabulary to understand. This text does what it is supposed to do, which is to teach.I also found the Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686 very good in helping me prepare for my medical exams in histology class.I highly recommend both books.

3-0 out of 5 stars More funny than useful
I bought this recommended book for my Histology class at the University of Copenhagen. At first it was fun to read the authors' dedication of the book to different winemakers, but eventually I grew tired of the endless joking around. The actual core text is not very in-depth but the illustrautions are beautiful, thus the mediocre rating. And another thing, the book is useless when it comes to the central nervous system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whatan awful book!
This may seem quite strange but it is true.Reading this book i was totally terrified that histology could bea dificult and demanding task to deal with. But to my own surprise, i surpassed thisobstracle with the help of another totally unknown book called " Basic Histology" by Adonis Kalligaropoulos.I recommend it to you if you want to acquire a clear and simple idea of histology and take an A in your exams. ...
