4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I needed to be able to identify slides of the different tissues, and be able to label the different components of it. This atlas has been of great help. It does not have much on text or background on the tissues, but it does have tons of pictures to train your microscope eyes.Have not come across the issue of not finding a picture of the tissue I am currently studying. Also, labels the different components of the tissues, not just the layers. I was very pleased with this.
As a side note this book just shows normal tissue, not pathology.
The only thing I did not like about it was the binding. For a $60 book, I would think they could afford a better plastic coiling binding. As it stands now, I have to continuously readjust the binding to make sure it holds all the pages. Planning on taking it to a print shop to get a better binding.
A suggestion to the manufacturer would be to place this in a binder of some sort, so that student can just take the pictures they need with them, rather carrying around the whole book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study tool
My professor had recommended this text, though did not require it for her histo class. I found it extremely helpful in studying for lab exams outside of class, but it wasn't very helpful in learning about cell types that we hadn't discussed in lecture first. An overall helpful study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas
I'm a med student and found this atlas to be a great source for studying for the my class exams. The pictures are great and it makes the facts easier to learn.Squamous cell epithelium never looked so good.I also used the following:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me with test preparation because it showed me what to focus on and the type of questions that were asked on my tests.I highly recommend both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent atlas.
I found the color atlas to be extremely helpful. The images are very clear and structures are labeled. It's a useful guide for medical students new to histology.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a the name says just an atlas
You need to know from other sources to understand the pictures.
Quality of the paper and pictures are good but unfortunately there is hardly any explanation what they are, what the functions are. It is not just because they run out of space, one side of the page is generally empty. I guess it is the concept that needs to be changed. Yes pictures are worth tousands of words but it would be much nices with some talk.Book is divided into systems. Book is also missing a short introduction that could have been very helpful. ... Product Description
Histology is the discipline of biology that involves the microscopic examination of thin  stained tissue sections in order to study their structure and correlate it with function. Histology can detect signs of disease not easily recognized on gross examination and can therefore be of interest in fish health supervision. The aim of this volume is to present a general reference guide providing an extensive set of histological images of fishes (about 40 species). This atlas is designed for use by students and researchers, biologists, ichthyologists, fish farmers, veterinarians working in fisheries and, of course, by comparative histologists who want to learn more about the fish world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well done and highly useful
I was not one to make textbooks part of my medical school experience as many of them were bland, uninspired, and just did not hold my attention that well. This little gem, however, is very nicely done on several different levels.First, with regard to the first reviewer's negative thoughts on image quality, I truly beg to differ.I have seen a number of different histology texts and do not understand how any of the EMs are of low quality.Similarly, the contrast and light levels of H&E stained sections are sharp, well-focused, and certaintly representative of what is seen under the microscope.Just as importantly, though, the well-organized flow of the tissue types, image descriptions and labeling, and use summarizing tables are well done.I also find the constant attention to clinical correlation refreshing; it helps students to remember the relevance of histology to clinical medicine, which is all too easily forgotten sometimes due to the intensity of the first year of medical school.I would certainly recommend this book to any of my peer physicians and medical students with whom I came in contact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative, comprehensive, and user friendly
I found the atlas to be quite innovative in its organization. One major difference between other histology atlases that stood out was the labeling of illustrations and micrographs. They are extremely easy to grasp due to the fact that the labels are "complete"(no numbers or letters, just full names). Most photos have both low magnification and high power insets. In addition, the clinical correlations, synopsis, and summary tables at the end of each chapter are very helpful. With the access code included in the book, an electronic version with an interactive labeling atlas and text search make this histology atlas unique and advantageous over other atlases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am a second year medical student. I think the organization of this book is excellent. It was very easy to locate specific topics. This makes it a wonderful choice for a reference and review tool for the step or board exams. I think the first chapter of definitions and terms is wonderful. The book we used in class did not have this and I really wish it had. There are picture examples of every clinical correlation which makes it much easier to understand the difference in pathological and normal specimens. I like that this book includes a huge number of clinical correlations. The synopsis of pathological and clinical terms at the end of each chapter is fantastic. The charts included in this book are especially useful. They provide clear, concise descriptions of the cells and tissues being addressed. The EM pictures are not great but they are still useful in identifying structures. I plan to use this book to study for the USMLE step exam and I would highly recommend it for any one taking a histology course.

1-0 out of 5 stars There are many better choices.
I received a copy of this book in my capacity of medical school faculty. My first thought was "ANOTHER histology atlas?" but perhaps this one offers advantages over the many fine choices already on the market? No. Many of the transmission electron micrographs are of very low contrast. Inexcusable, even in the pre-PhotoShop era. Many of the light micrographs are too small (fig. 11-10C) to give the student an accurate view of the subject matter. Also. some of the light micrographs are too dark, lack sufficient contrast or of poor quality (see the fibrocartilage on page 82) compared to the competition. As I said, there are many better choices for the student or physician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A+++
I had Bob for undergraduate histology in which we used this book. I am now a first year medical student and have found this book to be absolutely fantastic. The book emphasizes how to understand what you are looking at under the microscope and teaches you how to rapidly orient yourself based on defining histological characteristics. One feature I found very helpful in preparing for lab practicals is the commonly missidentified tissues sections found throughout the book. These sections, combined with several decision trees, helped me develop the thought process I use whenever I look at a slide. I would recommend this book for any medical student, especially when preparing for practicals or boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
So, I had Bob Tallitsch as a professor in college and we used the "copy/working version" of this text in our histology class.I loved the book so much with all of it's hints on "how" to identify things, instead of just looking at things and trying to recognize them like recognizing a person from a line up, that I bought it use in medical school the day it came out!I highly recommend this book for any that would like to learn histology the "right way" and be leaps and bounds ahead of your classmates in this area! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
many years after i bought it, i read it again from 1st to last page. i find it is a wonderful book: simple, logic, easy to read/understand, cover so many important things in pathology. highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver
This book is what saved my life in the pathology, microbiology and immunology course at my med school. The book put all the histopathology which was very dense and made unnecessarily complicated by the lecturers and the Robbins PBOD book in a very logical way. It has great micrographs with thorough text accompanying them and is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer of pathology
If you agree that seeing is believing, then this book is for you. Microscopic images with accompanying texts illustrate important concepts and salient features of common diseases. The language is clear and facts are presented concisely. I particularly loved the part on general pathology : it contains one of the most beautifully written summaries of the recurring themes in pathology...i.e. cell injury, necrosis, adative response, neoplasia, inflammation, thrombosis etc. Read, re-read and re-read the first few chapters of this book, so that those concepts get stuck in your brain. Once that's mastered, you'll have little difficulty facing systems pathology.
Unfortuantely, no book is perfect... this one has no gross/macro pictures, and the texts while perfectly summarised, are not enough to get you thru the boards or other path exams. If you're looking for uncommon or esoteric stuff, search elsewhere.
Nevertheless, I would call this the perfect primer of pathology, and an essential companion to the bigger textbooks.
Buy it if you really want to UNDERSTAND and APPRECIATE pathology. ... Read more
