The most problematic of territories for the pathologist -- the borderland between histology and pathology -- is the focus of this groundbreaking reference. Innovative, organized and generously illustrated, this essential guide brings together the leading international specialists in pathology, histopathology, anatomical pathology, surgical pathology, and neuropathology. 4-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable book for pathologists and path students

Just great!!! The author explains some important details that are not given in basic histology books. It's worth it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Pathology intern?
Practical, helpful, useful book.An excellent, wise choice; you won't be disappointed.
I'm a bit puzzled by a phrase in the previous reviewer's review, however:What is a pathology intern?
As someone who did a year of internal medicine (that is, an internship) before going on to pathology residency, and who now works with pathology residents, I'd like to point out that, as far as I can tell, there is no comparison between the first year in internal medicine, or surgery, or pediatrics (that is, the internship), and the first year of pathology training (called simply the first year of residency).
My internship year was the first year that the term "internship" was officially supposed to be NOT used; rather, we were to be referred to as "first-postgraduate-year" or "level I" residents, or something like that.
Typical foolishness from folks with too much free time.
Guess what: we were still referred to as; were still treated as; still referred to ourselves as; and still worked the ridiculously, unreasonably, brutally long hours of: ...interns.
Anyway, a great book - buy it, and use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for the Pathology intern
If you are a pathology intern or resident, this book was written just for you.How many of us graduate from medical school and remember basic histology? My guess would be few to none. The book is organized into sections based on organ systems and further subdivided into chapters on specific organs within those systems. It provides a "refresher" about the embryology and gross appearance of a particular organ before launching into the histology, and most people could probably use the review. The color pictures are excellent, and, in my opinion, a MUST for any book detailing histology; black and white photos just don't help me very much at this early stage in my career because they don't convey the details the way color photos do.

My only complaint is that the book has no photos that display the tissues as we actually see them in surgical pathology. For example, when I look at pictures of the histology of the colon, I would like to see a few shots of biopsied tissue rather than tissue that has been nicely sectioned from a colectomy specimen.Often, the tissue received for histology review is just a small fragment that is frequently missing some layers or may be crushed in areas, and it would be beneficial to see photos of the histologic appearance of these tissue fragments. That being said, the book is sometimes helpful in its written descriptions of artifact that may occur during tissue processing, and there are a few photos to go along with these descriptions.Perhaps I'm a little greedy in my desire for more photos, but someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words!

Don't buy this book to learn pathology; buy it to learn normal histology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, too voluminous, a bit boring, not great.
It is not easy to write a good histology book. Most histologists are not pathologists, and do not know a bit about real histology. These guys are M.D.'s, but because there many of them, the book is not a great success. E.g. there is no Toker cell, try to find a Merkel cell (not in the index, present in text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for path residents
One of the most difficult parts of starting a path residency is knowing what is normal. This book is perfect as a review book and also during the residency.
I have reffered to it many times and feel it is an indispensible part of a pathologists library. ... Read more

I was in need of a new Stedman's Path/Lab book as my other book was old and outdated. This is a must have for any medical transcriptionist to have.Recommend highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stedman's word books are the best!!
As the 2-star reviewer noted, this book is not a dictionary; it's a word book.Stedman's word books are specifically designed for medical transcriptionists.Stedman's does make a medical dictionary, which is also wonderful.

If you're a medical transcriptionist who's wanting to create or update your reference library, Stedman's is the way to go.The terms are listed alphabetically, of course, and these books also include multi-word terms which can be found by searching for the first word or the last word of the term.Stedman's word books also include common, not-so-common, and slang abbreviations.

More specifically, this path/lab word book includes a section for normal lab values (grouped by type, i.e. blood, urine, etc.).It also contains anatomical diagrams and word histories.

STEDMAN'S IS THE BEST!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stedman Books
So far I love all of the Stedman books I've purchased.I use them all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sue's Review
This book is in excellent shape. The delivery was fast and I am sure I will use it for many years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for transcriptionists
As stated by the other reviewer, yes, this is a list of words. That's why its title says "Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Words."If it were to include definitions, it would be a dictionary, not just a word book.

As such, it excels.I rate it less than 5 stars only because there are several other Stedman's books that I use on an almost daily basis while this one doesn't come in handy quite as often; however, for such necessary items as microorganisms and lab abbrevations this is indispensible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comtemporary text
This edition of Ten Cate has moved this text into a position of being the true definitive reference for dental education. The text is contemporary, makes great strides in standardizing terminology, and provides adequateclinical correlation to this basic science area. The only shortfall is thelack of color micrographs of the histologic sections. While this does notdetract from the solidity of the content, beginning students prefer this toB&W. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
With the research summarized in this monumental two volume treatise, Santiago Ramon y Cajal founded modern neuroscience and thus joined Darwin and Pasteur as the leading biologists of the 19th century. Starting around 1887, Cajal refined a neurological staining method developed almost 15 years earlier by the Italian histologist Camillo Golgi, and applied it first to relatively orderly parts of the nervous systems like the cerebellum, spinal cord, and retina. The conclusions he drew about the organization of neural circuits were, however, diametrically opposed to those advocated by Golgi, spurring an acrimonius debate that lasted well after the two shared the Nobel Prize in 1906. Early on, Cajal concluded that neural circuits are made up of individual units or nerve cells and interact by way of contact, whereas Golgi believed that such circuits are formed by a reticulum or net of contiguous nerve cells. Cajal was the first to see how neurons interact in the brain, laying the foundation for what came to be known as the neuron doctrine. His second great contribution was the ability to predict the direction of information flow in neural circuits based strictly on morphological criteria: dendrites and soma form the input side of a neuron while the axon forms its output side. This became known as the functional polarity hypothesis.

Using these two foundation stones, Cajal went on to analyze systematically all parts of the mammalian nervous system, along with selected parts in all classes of vertebrates. A synthesis of that work, this volume, which is accompanied by over 1,000 original illustrations, is based almost entirely on personal observation and offers a wealth of factual, historical, and theoretical information. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Multi-choice only
If you just want 528 multi-choice (or true-false) questions which cover a basic course to try your hand at, this might be the booklet for you. The answers are there too - without any comment as to why they are right, or how the alternatives are wrong. The questions are printed in black type on red paper. I found this distracting and harder to read than black and white. If your test is likely to contain paragraph, short essay, or 'explain why.." questions, this guide would be of little help.
