Product Description
This richly illustrated, thoroughly researched and completely unauthorized biography takes readers behind the legend of the great Gordie Howe. Signed by the Detroit Red Wings at 16, Gordie became a six-time leading scorer, a six-time Hart Trophy winner as the most valuable player, and he surpassed Rocket Richard’s NHL goals record to reach an amazing total of 801 — unmatched for years until Gretzky finally caught up to his mentor and idol. Gordie also includes a new introduction in this recreation of the glory of hockey's golden age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT HOCKEY BOOK
Gordie a Hockey Legend is book is a great book for anyone who knows about hockey and what the sport is and how it has evolved for its early stages with the popular players like Gordie Howe, He really set the bar in hockey back in his days. He held the NHL scoring title with the most goals in his career with 801 goals until "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky passed him in April of 1993.Gordie is really a Hockey legend.

Gordie is really a legend. He was Known for his ability to be tough anytime during a game, and get the goals, and stand up for his team at anytime needed. This Book was really good in my view. It described his great career, and his life leading up to and being in the NHL.

I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends, especially to my friends that like, and or play hockey. This book really shows the meaning for, and how hockey started to become more popular especially in the United States and in Canada. I really liked this book, and it is one of my favorites, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is truly a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gordie Howe
Gordie Howe: A hockey legend tells about his whole life. From when he was little kid, to when he made it in the NHL. It tells about how he first came upon hockey as a little kid. It tells about his carrer and the NHL. I thought that this book was ok. Not horrible but not excellent. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about gordie howe, or wants to read about him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Gordie Howe!
This book tells about Gordie Howe, one of the best hockey players ever, and his career in the NHL.In the beginning, it tells about his first couple of seasons, and then tells more about his great career and facts about himtoward the end. I learned a lot about him from this book, for example, Ilearned that he has played for two teams, the Hartford Whalers and theDetroit Red Wings, and that he was considered one of the greatest playersof his time.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enthralling look at professional hockey's past, and stars
As a lifetime fan of the Detroit Red Wings, I was overjoyed when I found that there is a recent biography of Howe that is much more up to date than many written in the 60's and 70's.This book gives the reader an insidelook at what it was like to get into the NHL in the 50's, and what it tookto stay there and become a star.Mackskimming is very candid when talkingabout the front office's team management "politics"The readeralso gets an up-close look at other great stars of the era such as RedKelly, Ted Linsay, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, and coach JackAdams.A must read for any TRUE hockey fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, but ends up only a good book on Howe.
The book starts out covering Howe in excellent detail. Several pages coverhis first seasons. Then as if the author lost interest, the decades goflying by.My reasons for reading the book was to find out, why Howe wasconsidered great, how Howe compared to Richard, how the game changed overthe years and what it was about Howe that enabled him to play for so long. The book only addressed how Howe established his early greatness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wayne Gretzky Review
By: Travis Reeves

This book was very good at giving information about the sport of hockey and one of the best players that ever played it, Wayne Gretzky. This book also kept me wanting to read. It did this too by using information I didn't know about Wayne Gretzky such as, his family life and the role he played off the ice.
Even as a smaller guy on the hockey teams he played on in the NHL, including the Rangers and the Oilers, Wayne Gretzky dominated. With his swift moves and technique he was able to score high and set records. One of his records he set was 300 points by his 30th consecutive game in an NHL season, which he continued to break by his 31st game.
Also in this non-fiction book of the hockey pro it mentioned some of the role models Wayne Gretzky had. These role models included his father, Walter Gretzky, a man who guided Wayne through his career and further.
This book really shows the good points to hockey. Also it gives good information about Wayne Gretzky and his accomplishments. I recommend this book to hockey fans and even those who aren't into hockey at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN!!

The nice part about the book is that each drill has an illustration with a description of how to perform it.Each drill also contains an explanation of the purpose, tempo and who can participate.Another nice feature is the variations section, which offers an idea of a different approach to the drill.

From its earliest days on frozen ponds, hockey has been a sport of speed and elegance, but also one demanding courage and physical will. The Hockey Book goes deep into the heart of the game, celebrating with astounding photographs and insightful words the great players and the inspiring teams, as well as an ethos-robust and selfless-that defines the sport as much in its dynamic present as it did in hockey's hardscrabble (and helmetless) past.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a great conversation piece
because people who know me or thought they did, do a double take of this book that's found a home on my coffee table.
"Hockey..?!"they say.
Yeah, hockey.
It opens up a new dialogue for my guest. Just flip through the pages and the history, record breakers, photos and personalities, giving the game another dimension for those who are often the ones at home, wondering what it's like to be in the stands, hearing the puck glide across the ice, feeling the cold atmosphere surround them or see the body slams in mid-air, leaving one speechless and in awe.
The photos, of course, are lovely with the stories universal, dialogue simple, keeping my interest, often reminding me why I want to read it. The chronological set-up provides a good reference without confusing or distracting me from my attention, with bits of trivia sprinkled throughout, placing a face on the game. S.I. knows how to have a sense of humor in good taste. Makes a great gift for those who love and appreciate the game.

P.S. Congradulations, Jordin Tootoo! You made S.I!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Illustrated The Hockey Book
This was a gift for my 13 years old cousin that plays hockey, he is very happy with this book, and it makes a great gift for those that like sports.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Mo?
The only mention of Mike Modano is his picture on the back with 19 other skaters, and the listing of names in the back inside flap has him in the wrong order. Sorry, but someone in SI has a problem with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Must Book for Hockey Fans
Sports Illustrated has put together the definitive book about the sport of ice hockey, drawing on its article archives and its photo library. This is a marvelous book, with huge, gorgeous color photographs. If you are a hockey fan, this tome is a valuable edition to your library. It also makes a great gift.

The book is best when it draws on its vintage files of the hockey greats. The best of the book, in this fan's opinion, are the stories and photos that covered the golden age of the NHL, immediately after World War II, when the NHL consisted of only six teams.

The minuscule number of teams (Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers) meant that only the cream of the crop in hockey made the big leagues. All the big boys are here:Maurice (the Rocket) Richard, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and the Esposito brothers;also the acrobatic goalies of that era, including Jacques Plante, Terry Sawchuk and Glen Hall.

Those were the days when the goalies didn't wear facemasks. The book includes a spectacular photo of Jacques Plant that appeared on the SI cover of Feb. 17, 1958 (unlike the cover photo in the magazine, the photo in the book is uncropped). The photo shows Plante peering out of his goal with his chin almost on the ice as he prepares for an assault by the New York Rangers. The tense-ness of the moment not only shows on Plante's face, but also on the faces of the fans in the stands behind the Montreal goal.

The book also includes the hilarious story written by George Plimpton when he played 15 minutes of an exhibition game in the Boston Bruins goal. Plimpton later published a book on that experience, but the original magazine article reprinted here will leave anyone squirming with laughter as the Big Bad Bruins set up the hapless writer - who played in the goal by while skating on his ankles.

One of the highlights is the famous photograph of Bobby Orr, stretched out horizontally three feet off the ice after scoring the wining goal in the 1970 championship game that gave the Bruins their first NHL Stanley Cup in 29 years (disclosure: the writer covered that game for UPI and interviewed Orr in the locker room after the game.Earlier this year, I ran into Orr and he signed a copy of the photo with the inscription, "Thanks for covering this game").The account of how the photographer shot thatamazing photo is also included.

Of course, the story of the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal won by the Americans is here, but for once the SI editors missed a chance to tell the complete story of American Olympic hockey:in the 50's, 60's 70's and 80's Olympic hockey was played by amateurs, no pros, and it was hockey at his finest.Dave Christian was on the 1980 team - and he was the son of Billy Christian and the nephew of Roger Christian who were two of the stars of the 1960 team that also won the gold medal in a fairy tale manner. And, of course, Herb Brooks the coach of the 1980 team was the last player cut from the 1960 team (further disclosure:the writer played on the 1965 U.S. National Team that included both Billy and Roger Christian, as well as Brooks).

There is also the touching story of Travis Roy, the young hockey star from Maine, who was permanently paralyzed in the opening seconds of his first game for Boston University in 1995.

If there is a weakness to the book it is the lack of documentation on the earliest days of hockey in Canada. Howie Morenz and the great goaltender Georges Vezina are mentioned, of course, but the focus of the SI book is on modern day hockey. This hockey fan wished there were more of those grainy photographs of the earliest players wearing their skimpy uniforms. There is too much lore from that era that is missing in this otherwise excellent book.

The book also seems a bit disjointed. When we do get photos from the earliest days, they are interspersed with photos of modern-day hockey. It can be confusing.

But overall, this is a fabulous book that documents the wonderful sport of ice hockey - the national sport of Canada, and a sport that has spread throughout the United States and Europe and more recently in Asia.If you love hockey, you're going to love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gravitated From Canada
This is an old book full of information about the beginnings of ice hockey as we know it.It was popular in Canada for a long time before America decided to try it out. This volume (not exacty an enclclopedia) is full of old information up to 1970.The key lyrics in that old song, "Has Anybody Seen Kelly?" have always served to remind fans of the most versatile All-Star in the history of the National Hockey League by the name of Leonard Patrick Kelly. In 1947, he was recruited by the Detroit Red Wings and went on to make history.

No man on skates was ever too big or too tough for Ted Lindsay to challenge. He was small (5 ft. 8 in. and 160 lbs.) but he always carried a big stick. He was smart.I have decided he may have been right to do so as crazies and crooked felons will pick on a smaller person. We have to be able to protect our bodies and our dignity.Ted certainly could do that with style.

The new Ice Hockey is a game of aggression and violence on the ice.We have the Ice Bears who are a pleasure to watch as they always play fair with less aggression of the bigger leagues.See my review of ESPN. ... Read more

I could not put this book down because this book symbolized what it takes to succeed in life.I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for what it takes to be successful at whatever you want to do with yourlife.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent sports book.
Dryden may be the Canadian hockey equivalent of basketball's Bill Bradley. I wouldn't be surprised if Dryden becomes Prime Minister of Canada in 20years.

Dryden studied at Cornell and took a year off playing hockey(after winner a playoff MVP award and Rookie of the Year)to complete hislaw degree at McGill. He won a fistful of trophies and Stanley Cup ringsduring his brief Hall of Fame career as a goaltender with the MontrealCanadiens. The rare combination of scholarship and athletic brillianceresults in an very well written book.

The book is a diary of the lastpart of his final season. While light on anecdotes, it delves into theheart of what is right and wrong with hockey.

Is is most likely thebest book ever written by an athlete.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best hockey book ever written
This is the definitive book of hockey. Dryden's thoughts on goaltending, the city of Boston, and on the state of hockey cannot be matched. Dryden had an incredible insight on what was wrong with the game and where the game was headed, even back in 1983. I read this book once a year, it is that good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun and quick read
Not much to say about this one, it's basically Don Cherry telling hockey stories. His personality comes through very well, he's frank and honest as always, and it's entertaining.A quick and lighthearted read, probably more of a rental or used purchase though.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
great hockey book don cherry is one colorfull man.if you just like hockey alittlebit .you still would like to read this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Really entertaining!
I wasn't a Don Cherry fan until I read this book.It was written as if he was sitting across the table telling me stories about moments in his life.I liked the way that it bounces around, instead of starting at the beginning and heading towards the end. It's a great book for anyone interested in the last 35 years of hockey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Light entertainment
The book is filled with little stories of hockey. I didn't really know all the names, teams and places that came up in the stories. I also found the book a bit boring at times because I didn't get all the jokes or stories. Part of it is because a) I'm aged 26 and haven't been around at the time of most of the stories in the book and b) I don't play professional hockey and that way miss the insider view on things.

Best parts were the ones telling something about everyday hockeylife, team members and some intangible stuff that goes on in the rink.

So for me this book was a two star effort. Someone else will get more out of it with a background better suited for reading this kind of hockey stories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Three-and-a-half stars out of four on normal rating scale...Pls. Read on...
The latest from Don Cherry with my fellow
Sirius Radio Toronto broadcaster, Hockey's
Al Strachan. Don details some of his lengthy
Hockey career as a player, then Coach and for
many years now, Antgonist/Anaylst. Great new
pics are included as well. The tree-humpers
and others leftist may cringe at the thought
of him, but I love him. And I'm only of the
Political Middle and not Right-wing (the phrase
sounds like a Hockey position anyway)!

Don's books and DVDs are always a highlight
when they come out because of the putrid
albatross of 'political-stupidity' that hangs
from neck these days. Screw 'The Bloc'! Don
did well in telling Harper how to straighten 'O
Canada' out! God love ya, Don. Slapshot On! ... Read more

Product Description
Most people recognize hockey superstar Bobby Clarke as the tough guy with the toothless grin. This fast-paced and energetic new book tells the story of Clarke's fights on and off the ice -- not with rival hockey players, but with diabetes. Long-time sports editor Nicole Mortillaro examines how Bobby was almost shunned from the league because of the disease, and recounts the impact of the important medical discoveries made about the disease since his time.
