This is a terrific cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and the results are fabulous. The buche de noel recipe especially is the easiest, tastiest and the most impressive-looking one that I've found anywhere and has become a popular annual Christmas tradition with my family and friends; I end up baking around a half dozen of them every year for parties and get-togethers.This book is worth its weight in gold if you do alot of baking for the holidays (or any other day, for that matter)!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just for fun
Our family received this book as a gift. Each one of my children enjoyed read the book like a novel.Who would think of a cookbook as kid-friendly reading material? They liked the pictures and stories interspersed within the recipes. Many of the tips presented are the kind a grandma might teach a younger child. Tips like how to get young children safely involved in the kitchen including how to teach using a knife safely. In a world where people have vastly forgotten the meaning of family, books like this fill the gap.The traditions presented are mostly Rabbinic. The items shown on the cover are included in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes and ideas for the family
I bought this book a year ago and rediscovered it on the book shelf.I am so upset with myself for waiting so long to try these recipes with my kids!!!!

Today my daughter made her first challah using the recipe from this book and it turned out absolutely BEAUTIFUL!We took the advice of the author and used the third portion of dough to make some cinnamon bread for Shabbat morning breakfast but we all had to sample it when it came out of the oven.Oh yum! It is delicious. It's so good that there is a little less than half of it left for tomorrow.I had to hide it from the kids or it would all be gone!

We are also making the Friday Night Pot Roast recipe and the whole house smells so good.I use to buy a mixture in a jar for making my brisket (Bubbe's) but this tastes (I had to sample it) and smells just like the one in the jar.Well, actually it smells and tastes a little better because it's homemade. :)

One of the most enduring features of this book are the notes and memories presented before each recipe. You learn many interesting facts, history and the author's own family life. You feel like you are chatting with Joan Nathan over a cup of tea.

Each chapter has a history of the holiday and customs associated with each. Then come the wonderful recipes.

I love that the instructions are written clearly for adult AND child. Each recipe also notes where adult help is needed and what steps can be entrusted to a child.

This is a great book for making memories throughout the year.We are going to have a lot of fun eating our way through the holidays and creating memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of recipes for the holidays!
When Bon Appetit and other prestigous publications give this one rave reviews, that's a hint that you might have a "find"...and they are right. From Sabbath to Passover, there are recipes that are delicious, generally very easy to prepare and clearly explained. Although designed for children, I think thisone would be excellent for anyone who wants to become an excellent Jewish cook. It is like having a crash course in both the essentials and some special variations.

The book is extremely attractive and there are additions which make it special, such as suggested prayers, historical info about each holiday, great illustrations, etc.

Although the vast majority of the recipes are very simple, when one is a bit more complex, there are often step-by-step illustrations. An example would be Children's Cholent, where every single part of the process is pictured, right up to putting the dish in the oven.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of the recipes were unique or new to me.

ANOTHER PLUS: The author suggests which parts of the recipe might be appropriate and easy for a child to handle and which should be done with supervision.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource I use again and again.
I couldn't disagree more with the first review. With two small children, I rely heavily on this book as Jewish holidays come and go and have enjoyed many cooking experiences with my kids as a result.Furthermore, the recipes are consistently delicious! My kids and I have prepared Yemenite High Holiday Stew and Bread for Yom Kippur, Apple-Honey cupcakes, Hamantaschen, Aunt Lisl's Butter Cookies, and the ice-cream cupcake menorah featured on the cover, as well as a tender and delicious challah. There are many suggestions throughout for ways children can take part in the cooking, and often the menu suggestions accompanying each holiday have given me ideas of foods my children will actually eat.As a cook and an authority on Jewish cooking, Joan Nathan is no slouch; her contributions to the New York Times cooking section are significant and her adult-oriented cookbook "The Jewish Holiday Kitchen" is an exhaustive resource of Jewish dishes that is equally wonderful. In fact, I was reluctant to try this book because I doubted she could switch gears and write a children's cookbook that was really useable, but I contend she has done it!I can't imagine my cookbook library without this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A remedial recipe book- very limited CRAFTY ideas
I would not even give this book one star.I was VERY disappointed with this book.I was expecting a CRAFTY kitchen book for childen based on the pictures on the front cover. This book primarily consists of traditional recipes for the holidays but gives instructions such as child mixes this.. adult stirs that.Example of receipes include: grape juice, hallah, chicken soup, matzah balls, pot roast, peeling a pamagranet, etc. There is nothing unique or special about these recipes. If you are buying it for your children- don't. and if you are buying it for the recipes- don't.There are many other better Jewish holiday cookbooks out there to choose from. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you weren't paying attention to mama or baba.....
This book is GREAT!It not only gives you the recipes but it also explains all the old time traditions and the current traditions that come from them.
The author has translated recipes into English and modern cooking terms (like using a food processor). Many good cooks can "tweak" the recipes to duplicate how mama or baba specifically made them but this book is a GREAT way to preserve those recipes that they never wrote down! Many thanks to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adds to our holidays
Festive Ukrainian Cooking has easy to follow recipes. While all of our grandmothers had their own variations, this is a good starting point to get back to our beginnings.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, understandable!
For any Ukrainian food/holiday tradition enthusiast tired of struggling through encoded recipes from "babtsia," this is the book for you!!!It provides simple recipes and introductions to the mysterious art of Ukrainian cooking -- "borshcht kvas,""pravdyviy hryby," et. al. -- as well as modern versions of the old traditions.Makes a traditional Ukrainian Christmas a reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recipes - like mom or grandmother used to make
Used to drive me crazy when my mother cooked Ukrainian foods and never had a recipe.Well, with this book all that has changed.I use it for those recipes where "a little of this and a little of that and then you mix it together" mean little to me.Also has excellent explanations of the different holidays and foods appropriate for the holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
This is the very first Jewish cookbook I bought when I was 18 years old. I have cooked these dishes for my family for the past 10 years, and they have become family favorites. My nephew is always excited when I cook with this book, because he knows that I'm making "Jewish food."

What makes this cookbook a step above the rest its accessabilty and encyclopedic knowledge of several Jewish cuisines. The cookbook is a fusion of Ashkenazi, Sepharidic, and Mizrahi recipes. This is important in my family because we are Jews of Color. My sister won't touch Ashkenazi food on a ten foot pole, yet I've always managed to find delicious Sephardic foods in this recipes that she enthusiastically praises everytime.

My only issue with the recipes is that they truly require more spices than she recommends. Try doubling the spices in her Rosh Hashanah Spice Cake or her kugel. The taste is manna from heaven.

I recommend this cookbook for the beginning Jewish cook. Greene knows how to make you feel at ease and seems to whisper expert advice for every recipes. Even the proverbial cooking dunce can deliver a quality Yom Tov for her family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Soul Food Done Right
My mother bought this book for me about 4 years ago.Since then it has become an invaluable tool in my kitchen to help create wonderful Jewish holiday traditions.EVERY recipe I have tried from this book has tasted wonderful, was easy to prepare, and made me look like a fabulous cook.I highly recommend the salmon croquettes. As other reviewers have said, the additional information the author gives regarding holidays and customs is great.I've even taken the book out during festivals to read excerpts - my guests were really impressed to learn new information about traditional foods served at Hannukah.

I love this book so much I've started to give it as a gift for every new bride I know. The recipes in this book have already become traditions in my new family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of a very spiritual breed of cookbook. Buy It.
`The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Gloria Kauler Greene and `The Essential Book of Jewish Festival Cooking' by Phyllis Glazer and Miryam Glazer are two leading representatives of a great cookbook subgenre which may be unique among all cookbook flavors in that they represent that extraordinary relation between Judaism and food. Like the exceptional `Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Joan Nathan and unlike the encyclopedic `New York Times Cookbook of Jewish Recipes', both books spend much space and words on the practice of kashrut or keeping kosher. But this is not the whole story. There are numerous Jewish culinary traditions which are not directly related to kashrut, such as the traditions surrounding the number of challah loaves baked for the Shabbat or the number of bumps on the challah loaves (The magic number here is 12, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, so the tradition is to have 12 loaves. More practical is the tradition to have two loaves each with 6 bumps created by the braiding of the bread before baking.)

There is one major difference among these three books which is evident in their titles. Ms. Glazer's book deals with `festival' cooking while Nathan and Greene deal with `Holiday' cooking. The subtle difference here is that the festival book does not cover Shabbat and the two `holiday' books do.

To a non-Jew, my guess is that since there are 52 shabbats in a year, while there are at most seven or eight major `festivals', it is much more important to have a book covering Shabbat as well as the yearly holidays. Between Greene and the Glazers, I find at least one other big difference in that Ms. Greene gives far more coverage to the creation of challah, which may be the single most important Jewish holiday recipe in any of these books, as it seems to be the one food which tradition calls for at every Shabbat. In fact, even though Joan Nathan's book combines two books, one of which is on Jewish holiday baking, Ms. Greene's treatment of challah, at least in the details she give for braiding several different numbers of dough strands is the most extensive. Among the recipes from the three books, the amateur bread baker in me prefers Ms. Nathan's recipe, as it uses the least (1 packet) yeast and calls for the longest raising time. She (and Ms. Greene) also use my preferred `active dry yeast' rather than the `rapid rise' yeast.

All three books deal in depth with Jewish holiday traditions, although Ms. Glazer and Ms. Greene seem to have better rabbinical sources and seem to be more dedicated to the details of the traditions. Of the three, Ms. Greene seems to touch me more effectively in her discussion of these traditions than the other two.

All three writers are primarily from the Ashkenazy tradition, although all three also give fair treatment to Sephardic dishes and menus. If you are really interested in Sephardic menus primarily, Ms. Nathan spends much of her space on Sephardic menus.

If you are willing to take a recommendation from a goyem, I recommend Ms. Greene's book most highly, followed by Ms. Nathan's book for her many baking recipes; however, all three are quality books.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DEFINITIVE JEWISH COOKBOOK!
Onc couldn't rave too much about this holiday cookbook. The recipes are delicious, not difficult to make, and a wonderful plus is the inclusion of the history and practices of Jewish customs. These are authenic Jewish recipes from around the world.

One thing I might point out:This book is preceded by the author's "The Jewish Holiday Cookbook," published in 1985.Many of the recipes in this book are included in "The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook," published in 1999.And there are changes. The latter book contains some new recipes, as well as some recipes from the first one. Some of the cooking procedures of recipes included in both books are changed. But one reason I'm glad to have copies of both books on hand is that one of my favorite recipes included in the first and second versions is called "My Mother's Chicken Soup"; I doubt if you will find a better chicken soup recipe if you simmer it as recommended for the full 8 hours. However, in the second version, I find that the exclusion of the only two spices in the initial soup recipe makes the soup less interesting. Those spices are one bay leaf ("optional") removed at the end of cooking, and a small amount of dried dill to taste ("optional") added at the end of cooking. To my taste, they enhance the soup and I can't imagine enjoying the soup as much without them.So to anyone wanting to delve into Jewish cooking seriously and in-depth, I would recommend considering purchasing both versions for a total scope of the selected dish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Jews and Non-Jews alike
I know from my name you wouldn't know that I was Jewish, but that is because my husband is not. I had to tell, that my mother-in-law picked up your book and started skimming while we were Kitchen Kibbutzin' and decidedit helped her understand the holidays and customs better than anythingelse. She HAD to have a copy, so we got her one as (of all things)aChristmas gift! She absolutely loves it. She says that it is so easy toread and the recipees are easy to follow! She can't wait to treat me andthe gang to some of the goodies she discovered from your book. She saidthat it isn't just a cookbook. It is her special reference book that helpsus celebrate and rejoice in the Jewish customs/traditions together.

Asfor me.... well let's just say that I never put it away!It is a staple inmy kitchen as important to me as salt and pepper! That is why it happennedto be out on the table for my MIL to discover!LOVE IT! ... Read more

If you are a teacher, if you are a parent, if you are a kid---you need this book!As with the other "concoction" books, the crafts are simple to make and affordable (cheap!) to make.I got one for my school library and I can't keep it on the shelves!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
Bought the book as used and it was great quality, it was practically new. Also a great price for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book family time book!
This book is full of great craft and art ideas. They are mostly made from simple things you already have on hand (flour, salt, cooking oil, toilet paper rolls, ziplocs, styrofoam cups, etc) and all are non-toxic.
Many of the recipes aren't just non-toxic, but actually edible (and some are quite tasty too).
My children and I enjoyed this series of books immensely over the years. As my children outgrew them I passed them along. However, now that I have grandchildren, I had to buy them yet again, so the fun can continue.
Of all the books of this sort I've encountered over the years as a mother of 5, and a preschool teacher, these are, BY FAR, the best. I recommend them to anyone that enjoys spending a little messy, quality time with their kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Can Be Fun!
My grandaughter is 3 years old. Some of these activities are too old for her, but we've done many of the easier ones together. She and I both love concocting stuff. I know we'll enjoy the other creations as she gets old.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Wonderful!
Every recipe we have tried so far has been outstanding. Special kudos to the chef for the recipe for Buttery Yorkshire Pudding.Previously we had little success with Yorkshire pudding or popovers in our high Colorado altitude (6800 feet). This recipe was a genuine success, when baked in a heavy bundt pan. The entire book brings back fond memories of our many visits to Williamsburg, when we lived on the East Coast. It's not just for holiday time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas & puts you in the holiday spirit!
Let me preface this by saying, I have TONS of Christmas books. They are inspiration each year as I head into the holidays. Sometimes they give me encouragement to shake things up, sometimes they remind me how important tradition is. This book does both!

It is a beautiful book (it's from Hallmark after all), but it has great ideas for parties, wrappings, decorations. And even if you've seen it all before, somehow the editors have given them a slight twist that makes it fresh and exciting.

So, at the top of my box of Christmas books is this lovely title. I'll probably get it out BEFORE Thanksgiving next year (something I never do) and get inspired anew.

I looked at it last year on Amazon, but decided against buying it after having been stung a few times by "holiday books." When it went on sale this year, it went on my short list.

Now, having seen it, I'd probably buy it even at full price. The photos are gorgeous, the paper is beautiful (doesn't it make all the difference when a book feels like a good book should -- not rough and bumpy pages with blurry text?), the ideas are helpful and unique.

It's like one of those Hallmark commercials on TV -- sometimes I laughed and sometimes I cried when I read it. I think you will, too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to plan for get-togethers!
I had already purchased Leanne's Saving Dinner book and loved it. I got this to make having people over for holidays, get-togethers, etc easier.
It has. I dont exactly like all the recipes in it but it gives you great infomation, tips and timelines for making meals and memories. I liked the valentines day chocolate fest and the ideas for a grown-up b-day party. And Thanksgiving Day is not to be missed but you can get this off her website (at least you could for Nov.2007).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Addition
This is an easy to following guide, makes shopping so much easier and takes the guess work out of what ingredients are needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
This is a great cookbook. It follows the same format as Saving Dinner. There are dinners typically associated with holidays (all sorts of holidays) in this cookbook. The recipes do not call for any strange ingredients and they are easy and come out with great results. This is a great cookbook and I'm glad I ordered it.

Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a kitchen staple
Definately a kitchen staple! This covers you for more than Christmas... here comes your Valentines Day menu from the capable hand of Ely.

This book is a tremendous resource for those who are not familiar with Kosher food preparation.I was in charge of a Seder Dinner at a Catholic Church and although I had a Jewish mentor, was so glad to also have this book, since it guided us through even the proper table settings for this beautiful meal.VERY GOOD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about the Seder!
Excerpted from The Orange County Register
April 10, 2003
by Judy Bart Kancigor, author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

Some good things deserve repeating. Zell Schulman's exhaustive Passover
guide, "Let My People Eat," is now in paperback, renamed "Passover Seders
Made Simple" (Wiley). It contains everything you ever wanted to know
or thought to ask about the Seder, the traditional meal that commemorates the deliverance of the Jews from slavery in Egypt.

Calling herself an "ecumenical Jewess" - "I'm a Reform Jew with an
Orthodox heart and a Conservative way of life," she said - Schulman offers
lists for everything from pantry supplies to prohibited foods to Passover
substitutions. She explains the significance of ceremonial items, gives
shopping resources, and offers six Seder menus as well as additional recipes for the eight-day celebration.

Even the novice need not be intimidated under Grandma Zell's encouraging
tutelage. "Don't push the panic button," she advised.

The recipes are keepers: Passover Pizza with a zucchini crust, Shiitake
Mushroom-Bell Pepper Matzo Kugel, Roast Lamb with Garlic Rosemary Sauce,
Chocolate Mousse Tort. All are delivered in her breezy style that reveals her upbeat outlook. "Life is a gift," Schulman told me. "You open the package, and you deal with it."

This carrot salad makes a delicious starter. "It's the best appetizer that you can use for the rest of the year too," she said.

ALLEGRIA COHEN'S CHIZU SALADA (CARROT SALAD)
2 lbs. peeled baby carrots
2 tsp. ground cumin
1/2 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. dried red pepper flakes or ground red pepper
juice of 1 large lemon
2 TBS. olive oil
chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Place the carrots in a medium saucepan. Cover with cold water and cook over
medium heat until the tip of a knife can pierce them, about 15 minutes. Do
not overcook. Drain and let cool. In a small bowl, mix cumin, paprika, salt, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and olive oil together. Add this to the cooked carrots and gently coat them. Let cool for 20 minutes. Garnish with the parsley. These may be prepared up to 1 week before the Seder. Serve at room temperature. Makes 8 servings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I used this book to help me set the table as well as for the recipes inside.I couldn't have had my Seder without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of menus and ideas for Passover.
I had this book for a year or two before I really tried out the recipes one year. They are excellent!

Zell Shulman organizes her book into numerous Pesach menus, such as Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Health-Conscious, Easy to Prepare, and Ecumenical Potluck. There are grocery lists and timelines accompanying each menu and they really help to streamline the task of pulling together a Seder meal.

Even though the layout and organization was impressive, I wasn't sure I would find the recipes to be as good as promised. When I served the Sephardic menu, it was really good!Everyone devoured the food and it felt wonderful to present such a lavish meal that still allowed me to enjoy the holiday and my friends and family in a relaxed fashion.

One other plus: the author includes many additional recipes that help round out the eight day holiday. My reason for four stars:her "Easy to Prepare" seder scares me a little, although in fairness I haven't tried the recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 75 delectable cookie recipes
I bake a lot, and I read cookbooks all the time, looking for good recipes.I went to the library to copy down a few Christmas cookie recipes, but the recipes and photos in this book looked so great I realized I had to buy it.I have NEVER before found a cookbook where I want to try every recipe in the book, but every recipe in this book scans great (usually my thought pattern is:that sounds good... wait, how much vegetable oil does this recipe call for?eewwww...)If you are looking for Christmas cookie recipes, this is the book I'd get.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you will need
I have used this book time and time again, and not only for Christmas. The recipes are accurate, easy and great. The color photos really show how the recipes should look and they will!I have made more that a dozen different types of cookies from this book and each one was good if not great. The only problem I have with this book is that the ingredients are written into the directions. This makes it a little more time consuming when you are trying to get your recipes ready before the actual assemble and baking process.A minor set back for a really great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday cookies that look great and taste good!
I've used this cookie book when making holiday cookies for family and friends for the last several years, and the results have always been a huge hit.Too often Christmas cookies look great but taste terrible - not something to worry about with this book.I particularly recommend the Cranberry-Cherry Pinwheels. They are delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. However, be forwarned that most of the recipes in this book are also found in the new Joy of Cooking.Joy is great and much more comprehensive.I'd recommend taking a look at it before buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for holiday baking!
As the designated Christmas cookie baker in my family, I was given this book about three years ago. It's a wonderful resource for new ideas and rediscovering old favorites. I heartily recommend the snickerdoodles and the orange ginger wafers.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, or maybe the best!

My group at church is loving this Holiday Study at FP4H. It is so interesting reading the daily stories and then journaling to go along with it. It is not too time consuming for the Holiday Season and yet will help keep us on track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study for this busy timeof
Just the right length of study for this time of year when it would be tempting to give up until after the holidays. Stories that are very relatable and inspiring!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stay on track during the holidays!
Now is a great time to order your "Light and Healthy Holidays" devotional to either do on your own, or with your FP4H group. The group that I lead is going to meet six times: the three Wednesdays before Thanksgiving and the three Wednesdays before Christmas. The six weeks of devotionals in this book fit into that time frame perfectly.

This is not a standard FP4H study. Each "day" in the book includes a short devotional reading, then a section for personal reflection and application, almost like a journal. There is not a series of questions and Bible verses to be looked up as in the regular Bible studies. There are memory verses and Live-It Trackers for each week, as usual. In the back of the book are menu & recipe helps for the season, including plans for your Thanksgiving and Christmas Day meals.

Here are the themes and memory verses for each week:

1. Giving Thanks (I Thessalonians 5:18)
2. Goodness and Love (I Chronicles 16:34)
3. Great Joy (Luke 2:10-11)
4. Come to Worship (Matthew 2:1-2)
5. Be Made New (Ephesians 4:22-24)

Very limited information with few specifics - not helpful for someone who is seriously looking for international cooking schools. There were no indexes of cooking schools within particular countries, and the few summaries (which comprised each chapter) focussed more on travel rather than on the quality of cooking lessons germane to each region. The book would have been returned except that the book's plastic packing had to be broken in order to see the table of contents - a process which disturbed "the original packing" and made it impossible to return.Save your money! If you are internet savvy, you will be able to find just what you are looking for via the web. ... From the man who reinvented Thanksgivingcomes--Christmas!This isn't to say that Buddhists, Jews, and Muslimsshould read no further. We're talking end-of-the-year feastinghere. Gather up the family and clear the kitchen counters. Make roomin the refrigerator. The old is about to give way to the new, and agreat feast is the best gift of them all, be that a Christmas feast orwhatever you may call it. Rick Rodgers shows the way with Christmas101, identifying all possible pitfalls and minefields, encouragingmass preplanning so that you, the host or hostess, can also kick backat a certain point and become part of the festivities. There is moreto life, after all, than polishing the silverware.

This slim volumeis loaded with recipes and information in chapters such as "Making aList and Checking It Twice"; "Appetizers, Snacks, and Beverages"(where you'll find Old Fashioned Egg Nog); "Salads, Soups, and OtherFirst Courses" (try Orange and Red Onion Salad with Cranberry-OrangeVinaigrette); "Roasts, Birds, and Other Main Courses" (if you're overturkey, try Crown Roast of Pork with Apple Stuffing and Hard CiderSauce); "Side Dishes and Stuffings" (how about Giant Potato and LeekRösti?); "Festive Breads" (bake up a crusty Moravian Sugar Cake);"Candies" (we liked Chocolate-Orange Truffles); "Cookies" (roll outsome Linzer Cookies); "Desserts" (enjoy Deep Dark Stout Gingerbread);and a holiday menu planner. Does that sound all-inclusive or what? There's even more than the thousand-and-one things to do with turkeythat Rodgers presented in his first volume in this series,Thanksgiving 101.

What's particularly nice about this bookis that Rodgers focuses on the feast, not the setting for thefeast. He knows his business and he sticks to it. "When it comes toholiday decorating," he writes,

if it can't be done simplyand quickly, I don't do it.... My strengths lie in the kitchen. Youwon't find me hot-gluing Styrofoam reindeer. But if you can fit craftprojects into your schedule, be my guest.

5-0 out of 5 stars best recipes
This book has the best cookie recipes! I get rave reviews on the cookies, and the fruitcake is out of this world. people (well, those who like fruitcake) literally beg for the recipe. I have not tried many of the entrees or sides, but they look good. The best things about this book are the great instructions, the timetables, and tips. You know all you need to know about a recipe before you try it. highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars First rate first Christmas book
This book was purchased for my daughter who is setting up her first household. She was thrilled with it.It is has information on decorating, ideas for entertaining and lots of recipes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Christmas *Recipes* 101 would be a better book title
I am disappointed in this book because it is *not* a general book about Christmas preparation, but a recipe book only. With a name like Christmas 101, and what I read in the book description, I was expecting not only recipes but perhaps an overall Christmas timetable, tips on selecting a tree as well as thoughts on natural vs artificial, information on different cultures' traditions other than strictly food based. This is a nice enough recipe book, but is is now what I expected, or wanted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought the book
Recieved this book just the other day. So many recipes I will never use espically for Christmas like Black-eyed pea stew, or Parsnip and leek soup. No pictures haven't found a recipe yet I would actually make for Christmas maybe the cookies? I don't think this book is simple to make it stress free. Not what I expected.I have a ton of better Christmas cookbooks thought I would give this one a try and sorry I did. I could not recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD CHRISTMAS EDUCATION
Having Rodgers' Thanksgiving 101 book I decided to try his Christmas 101 book, too. This is not, nor is it meant to be the all-encompassing cookbook for Christmas. It is a rather slight book at under 200 pages.

More important than the actual recipes is Rodgers' advice and tips on planning your feast, party, decorating tips for the table, music, along with great ideas for new tradtions and ways to spice up old traditions.

Whether it's your first holiday party or you're an old pro looking for new entertaining ideas, Christmas 101 Offers luscious fare with Rick's easy style, including Focaccia with Smoked Salmon and Marscapone, Seafood Chowder with Fresh Herbs, and Peppermint Profiteroles. Classic holiday recipes for prime rib, goose, gingerbread cookies, wassail, and Hoppin' John are covered as well.

Product Description
In Holiday Cookies, baking queen Linda Collister provides lots of ideas for homemade gifts and edible decorations. Little Bakes look beautiful presented in a stylish box, so why not bake Triple Chocolate Cookies, Lebkuchen (the traditional German spiced cookies), or Lacy Brandy Sanps for a truly scrumptious present? And the Iced Star Cookies are the perfect decoration for the Christmas tree. Brownies, Bars, and Cakes make indulgent gifts. The Chocolate Brioches and incredible Truffles will satisfy even the sweetest tooth, or for something slightly fruitier, try the Lemon or Cider Fruit Squares. All of them are gorgeous alternatives to a commercial box of chocolates for a dinner-party host or simply for family. For those who are bigger fans of Savory Treats, bake a batch of Walnut Sables. If you've been invited to a drinks party and you want to come with more than a bottle of wine, bring some of your own Marinated Olives for that personal touch. Preserves scuh as Cranberry and Basil Relish are easy to make and create stunning gifts when presented in a pretty ribboned jar--give them away or keep them on your dinner table for a festive look. Even if you aren't a confident baker, Linda Collister's easy-to-follow recipes will get you making festive treats which are perfect either for serving at home or giving away to friends and family, whatever the occasion.
