Product Description

Rich, luminous fabrics.

Eleven miles of thread.

An uncountable number of stitches.

Clear, sparkling words.

With these ingredients Anna Grossnickle Hines celebrates the lights that brighten the darkest season of our year. In poems and quilts she captures each heartening glow and flicker, from the moon and aurora borealis to the holiday lights of Santa Lucia, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Chinese New Year to one lone candle and a hidden flashlight in the deep, dark night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artistry in Two Forms
The artistry and craftsmanship in the quilts in this book are amazing. What a stunning representation of the new forms and methods of quilting, and what a delightful way to share them!Pairing these quilts with simple poems that capture the light and shine of the holiday season was truly an inspiration. Now I must have her other quilt book!I'm an art teacher and a mom and I can't wait to share this with my students and my kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Beautiful Quilts
Here's a stunning collection of dramatic and magical quilts teaching about winter holidays of various cultures and describing winter sights such as a million-colored aurora borealis and a glowing wash of sunset against darkening snow. Swirling lights and crackling flames flicker bright against deep darkness, and there is a clever depiction of reading by flashlight. An extra treat for adults is the brief explanations of how the quilts were made. "Winter Lights" will warm the senses of young and old. See the author's first quilt book Pieces: A Year in Poems & Quilts

4-0 out of 5 stars leaves out Jesus the Reason for the season
This is a poem book about things that happen in the winter. Each poem is pair with a quilt that was made by the author. The poems are about the quilt that is pictured such as snow themes and holidays that are celebrated in winter time.

All sorts of holidays are featured such as Kwanza and Hanukkah.Christmas was mentioned in one poem but Jesus was not.

This would be great for kids and grandmothers who enjoy quilting to enjoy together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry, in words and cloth.
The poems are lovely, the quilts are spectacular. Yes, the book is great for four and five and ten year olds (I am mother of the latter two ages!) and, pleasing too for 43 and 45 year olds, as well!(the parents of said five and ten year olds) Poetry comes in many forms:letters and words, yes, but also in these fabulous textiles. What a wonderful antidote to a cold, dark grey winter.Check this out; you can't possibly be disappointed, esp. if you notice the figure who looks like he is out of E.J. Keats "The Snowy Day".

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful read aloud book
i bought this book to read to my daughter who is four. it instantly became her favorite bedtime book. i love the illustrations and the poems -- we savor each page, taking it slowly. The page with the faralitos is incredible. I've never quilted, but this book makes my fingers itch! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best way to spend your hard earned money
I ordered this book in hopes of finding something useful for my sons kindergarten classroom. Well the book gets 2 stars; one for each of the things in this book that are of value to me. First off for the price there are no real pictures of finished products, only drawings. Most everything in here is not out of the ordinary. The one thing we took exception to was the Christmas tree options, one suggestion was a ladder? Making a mix CD? Re-gifting??? There were your typical suggestions of homemade cards, candy, and cookies. If you dig deep on your paper craft knowledge, you really do not need this book. What I found of use was the suggestion of a homemade snow globe and painting our own pictures on canvas. Not a really good use of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Save some money this year and still have a Merry Christmas
A Homemade Christmas: Creative Ideas for an Earth-Friendly, Frugal, Festive Holiday is full of ideas to have a lovely, thoughtful, homemade Christmas that won't break the bank. Written for adults, most of the projects are kid-friendly or easily adapted for children.

The book is divided into 5 chapters, each devoted to a different aspect of Christmas crafting. They include Greeting, Trimming, Cooking, Giving and Celebrating. Although there are no photos, there are plenty of illustrations that accompany well-written instructions for the projects. And while there are lots of Christmas crafting books available, the thing that makes this book stand out is the emphasis on using recycled or re-purposed materials. There are projects utilizing paint color chips, glass jars, tin cans, egg shells, old sweaters, galoshes, even twigs and branches from your yard.

Of course, there are many of the traditional suggestions like handmade gift certificates, instructions for a knitted cap, recipes for giftable foods, etc. But even those are time-tested and make welcome gifts.

If you are wanting to make this Christmas less about spending and more about enjoying and gifting in a personal and memorable way, this is a nice book to get you started. If you have kids, you'll be sure to find several great ideas to help them get in on the action.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
The first thoughts that came to mind were: All of these ideas are either on line so why do I need a book to collect dust, and/or the ideas are very out-dated and were "exciting" 5 - 10 years ago.Still, there are a couple of interesting things that would be fun to try with the kids like the snow globes. But we would not buy this book.

Short, not so sweet review, but it's just not a very impressive book (and this review comes from a family of crafters and good cooks). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Storigami
I bought this book after enjoying another, "Fold-Along Stories : Quick & Easy Origami Tales For Beginners" by Christine Petrell Kallevig.

The models in this book is simple, very, very simple. Most adults even begineers prefer simple models with a bit more details, something easy to identify and to fold. Most of the models can be completed in less than 10 steps. This book is definitely not for people who prefer complicated models and those looking for new models to try out.

The stories here stress is on holidays, Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, May Day, and Mother's Day. In some instances, how the holiday arise would be described.

The usual flow goes as follows: The story would start, at a strategic point, a fold would be used to illustrate a step in the story. You will find that the story step synch very well with the folding step.

I find this book suitable for teachers who tell stories and wants to get the children to get more involve in the story. It is also suitable for teachers who teaches craft and wants to add another dimension into the craft.

The downside is that there are many cultures in this world that do not celebrate the holidays described, however, ideas gained can be easily adapted for other holidays suitable for your culture or country. The book is also rather expensive. ... Read more
