Product Description

At last -- the Jewish holidays transformed into exquisite celebrations, graced with sublime chic and elegant ease for the contemporary Jewish reader. Combining the flair of Martha Stewart with the warmth and accessibility of a delightful neighbor, Rita Milos Brownstein breathes new life into traditional Jewish holiday celebrations.

Entertaining in high style creates marvelous holiday memories for your family, your friends, and yourself. For each of the ten major holidays, Brownstein offers suggestions for creative projects that will bring the whole family together and mouth-watering menus that make it effortless to prepare festivities of true material and spiritual splendor. With more than 85 full-color photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step illustrations, this captivating book will motivate you to explore your Jewish heritage and use your imagination to make it your own.

Jewish Holiday Style is packed with dazzling and inspiring ideas. For Rosh Hashanah, host a honey-tasting party to celebrate the sweetness of a new year. If you love the ocean, observe Sukkot in a sukkah with a seaside motif -- even if you live in the cornfields of the Midwest. Make your own Chanukah menorahs -- try a simple cruse of oil that reflects the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple, or an elaborate metalworked candelabra that is sure to become a family heirloom. For the Passover table, create personalized pillows for your guests, which.will allow them to recline like the royalty of old while you serve a lavish yet simple-to-prepare feast.

As part of this eye-opening tour through the Jewish calendar, Brownstein also highlights the historical origins and religious importance of each major holiday with a delightful essay that brings ancient rituals into the modern day. Think of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance, as "a day spa for the soul...the too rare opportunity to get in touch with the things that really matter." Purim is "the definitive holiday of joy and merriment," commemorating a bright moment in the often somber history of the Jewish people. On Shabbat, "appreciate that you are joining the wave of Jews who are kindling their candles as the sun falls, working its way around the world."

At once a handbook of creative ideas and a primer on the spiritual significance of the Jewish holidays, Jewish Holiday Style is the first lifestyle book to address these all-important rituals and ceremonies, an elegantly designed volume that blends sensational crafts and delectable cooking with the richness of Judaism's 3,300-year-old tradition. Bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new looks, here, finally, is the book you've been waiting for. Let the holiday celebrations begin!Amazon.com Review
"In Judaism, since the spiritual and the physical are intimately connected, each has the power to enhance and infuse vitality into the other, creating a divine partnership. This concept of beauty and spirituality is most attainable during the Jewish holidays." So writes Rita Milos Brownstein, in the introduction to Jewish Holiday Style, a Martha Stewart-esque treatment of the Jewish holy days. The book is a colorful step-by-step guide to making the highlights of the Jewish calendar as chic and elegant as they can be. Although Brownstein sometimes gets carried away with her rhetoric (Yom Kippur becomes "a day spa for the soul"), her ideas and instructions (such as making your own Chanukah menorah, or celebrating Rosh Hashanah by tasting various honeys) will add some zest to the oldest Jewish traditions. And even Brownstein's excesses have at least this to redeem them: they always encourage the biblical virtue of hospitality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes...loaded with color photos..great cookbook!
I turn to this cookbook often, not just for the holidays. The recipes are delicious and this is one of those highly visual books loaded with color photos. The matzo ball soup makes the best chicken soup I've ever had. I make it with variations (barley, wild rice) every month. I love this book and am delighted to have found Rita Brownstein. I hope she writes more books. I'll be waiting hopefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly inspiring, a little cheesy.
I've turned to this book again and again for Jewish holiday celebrations, and it often has lovely ideas.Just as often, some of them strike me as rather improbable and silly. On the plus side, the sukkahs she describes making are lovely interpretations of the idea, but on the minus side, trying to follow her directions to actually construct one will make you crazy.BELIEVE ME.I've used some of her ideas for Rosh Hashanah cards and been pleased with the results, but the Purim costumes and mishloach manot baskets mostly seem silly. And make your own journal for Yom Kippur?I don't know, I'm always way too busy to mess with something like that. Many of her recipes are surprisingly delicious, especially her orange-chocolate hamantaschen and the raspberry linzer-torte hamantaschen...YUM!So while it's not always consistent, I am glad to have it in my library nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars adds enjoyment to the holidays
great book for the holidays added alot of fun and meaning to our celebrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Style...
I bought this book for myself, and five more copies for my friends and family. This passover I am planning on making three matzah-cover vases formy pesach table, and I'm also going to have a glass-square sedar plate. These stylish things are chic and inexpensive, plus they look great withany room or setting. The book itself has more knowledge than any otherstyle book: usually books are either one or the other. Is Ms. Brownsteinplanning on writing any books in the future?

5-0 out of 5 stars Why to buy this book
It will help you style up your house on any occasion like Shabbat to Passover. It is a wonderful guide on home decorating of every Jewish holiday. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditions Begin Here
This is a wonderful little cookbook of Christmas recipes from many ethnic groups. Each recipe comes with a little history and background info. The photos almost make you want to eat the page. I haven't tried all the recipes, but the ones I have turned out well. If you want to make some new culinary traditions for Christmas, this is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good cookbook
Christmas is such a special time of the year. It's a celebration of Christ's birth, a time to connect with family and friends and of course, there's the yummy food.

Each recipe in The Family Christmas Cookbook is accompanied by a story or poem from Christmas: The Annual of Christmas Literature and Art that began in 1931 and was published for sixty-five years. The legacy begun those many years ago is continued in this global cookbook with recipes from around the world.

Smorekringle from Denmark brings memories of my Danish grandmother's kitchen at Christmas--the warmth, the fragrance of the food, the singing and storytelling. While making this delectable pastry with almond filling, read 'Blowing of the Yule.'

Coffee Braids are a sweetbread made with cardamom and originates from Finland. It's yummy and while devouring it, read the story Preparing for Christmas.

The Almond Torte is a meringue layer cake with chocolate frosting and almonds. It's mouth-watering good and originates in Serbia. The Serbian Blessing is beautiful.

And the Danish Ris Almande (sweet rice and almond pudding) gives me a rush of nostalgia for Christmases past. I want to return to my childhood and A Danish Christmas Eve Dinner. Perhaps this is a part of my heritage I can share with my grandchildren.

Oh, then there is Hogmanay Shortbread from Scotland, Sandbakkels from Scandinavia, Kourabiethes from Greece, Krumkake from Sweden & Scandinavia (one of my childhood favorites), Noche from Italy, Kanya (West Africa) and so much more. While you enjoy these scrumptious dishes, enjoy reading about the traditions and rituals of the countries where the recipes originate.

A delightful cookbook that will smack you in the face with your past--and you'll love every minute of it. Oh, and then there is the food. It's a good thing.

Armchair Interviews says: Another yummy addition to your cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is why I'm happy to be vegan!
My moms going out of town this weekend so we had an early Rosh Hashana meal last night. We made the whole menu except that we made her apple pie for dessert bc we had 9 apples in the house. O-M-G. My mom was the only Jew at the table and I was the only no-added-fat-vegan and EVERYONE loved the food! My boyfriend had seconds of the cabbage dish even though he "hates" cabbage! haha...and the meal went together very well! Her sour cream was fantastic and really brought all the flavors of each dish together. And the meal was to die for and, honestly, way cheaper than the meat-counterpart would have been for making that huge amount of food. FYI: the CHALLAH BREAD WAS KILLER! It was good plain, with honey or with sliced fruit on top. And the apple pie (in her other cook book) was freakin awesome. It's a childhood favorite dessert of mine. It was sooooooooo good. And I really liked the pastry dough, which I was afraid of having. What a good meal! I had it ALL again for breakfast this morning ;) ahahahahha...my oatmeal will have to wait for another day.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this cookbook!
I am not a "good" cook and I don't know a lot of good meatless meals.... if your the same then this book is for you!LOVE IT!

The only thing I have to say is hide the tofu in the frig!People have tofu issues!!!! I NEVER tell anyone it's meatless or has tofu in it and they eat everything on their plate. If they know or see it has tofu they won't eat it.What they don't know won't hurt them!

My Mom and Dad are meat freaks. Everything they eat is breaded, deep fried and fatty.I have made several meals from this book and the others by the same author and they have no idea. They leave saying everything was GREAT!Ha ha ha....if they only knew!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for holiday meals
Often the most difficult meals for coming up with ideas are those for the holidays, especially when you are having non-vegan guests. This book is a great solution, not only for tasty creations that most everyone will like, but meals that are attractive and good alternatives to those that contain meat.I've made many of the recipes in this book and have never had a complaint on any of them. They taste good, presentation is great and everyone asks for seconds.

The other nice thing is that just because it's vegetarian, it doesn't contain a lot of high calorie ingredients. You can have a festive meal, knowing that its healthy. The recipe portions are large enough that nobody will walk away from the table hungry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Both Worlds
The Almost No-Fat Holiday Cookbook: Festive Vegetarian Recipes

This is one of the BEST cookbooks I've come across in a long time! I am transitioning to a vegan diet (while trying to lose weight) and this cookbook is contains 100% vegan recipes, all with 1g of fat or less--the best of both worlds!

When I first got the book, I started putting Post-It flags on the recipes I wanted to try, but soon found that nearly every page then had a Post-It!

So far I've made my own vegan soy "sausage", soy "chorizo", BBQ "nuggets" and a fat-free hummus. I can't wait to try the rest! PS: Don't let the "holiday" in the title fool you: these aren't just "Christmas" recipes: there are recipes for Eid, Passover, Chinese New Year, etc.--pretty much for ANY time of the year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for everyday cooking
Grogan's book interested me when I realized that my roasted vegetable dishes and other items were adding too much fat in my diet.I have since tried a few recipes and absolutely loved them! They are creative; they work; and they are healthy.I don't necessarily like the inclusion of textured vegetable protein, but I can use tempeh and other items instead. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been....
This cook book could have been good--I don't know because so many pages had been cut out of the used version I purchased. It was a real disappointment to buy something that was described as "like new" and then learn (too late) that so many recipes had been removed.I won't buy this way again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Original and Warm, but Dated
I must give this book high marks for originality and organization, and for thoroughness without repetition. In addition, the book transmits a genuine warmth of Jewish feeling. Harriet Roth does not care to be hip, ironic or vegan. She is just trying to get good-tasting Jewish food on the table with a minimum of cholesterol and sodium. I would like to visit Harriet Roth's kitchen and chat with her while she cooks.

Unfortunately, some of the recipes recall a more innocent time of free use of sugar and processed foods. In addition, the heavy use of nonfat dairy may put off some people (although, in fairness, it is hard to make traditional dairy food without dairy). Most of the recipes are for groups of 6 or more, and cannot be scaled down.

I like this book, but I do not use it much.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good reference for jewish company cooking
I needed a reference for cooking for some Jewish friends....they loved it.I am not Jewish myself but, have prepared some of the recipes for my family and they were very good.I can't imagine I am the best person to ask, but anyway, I enjoyed this cookbook and it's recipes were well-recieved by all. ... With its thorough explanations, lavish full-color photography, and delicious recipes, The Passover Table is the only book you need to celebrate the beloved and joyous commemoration of the Exodus.Amazon.com Review
Susan Friedland wrote The Passover Table in 1994, and it is still one of the mostoutstanding books for this holiday. Before offering recipes, Friedland presents the roots of Passover in Jewish history and in the Torah. She explains thepurpose of particular parts of the Seder, the ceremony that marks theobservance of Passover, including the famous Four Questions.

Food has a central role during the entire seven days of Passover. Recipes inThe Passover Table include dishes served by Jews with roots in northern andcentral Europe, and those whose culinary influences come originally fromMediterranean Europe (Ashkenazim), North Africa (Sephardim), or the MiddleEast. In addition to Gefilte Fish and Tzimmes (a sweet meat and vegetable stew)for Seder nights, the dishes for the rest of the week include Mina dePesha, a layered chicken pie made with matzos; airy, puffed Potato Chremsel;and Birmuelos, Sephardic doughnuts served for dessert or breakfast. Largecolor photos encourage you to try unfamiliar recipes by showing the mouth-wateringresults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Passover Cookbook
This book turned out to be better than advertised. We were more than pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Passover books I have...
This is one of the best Passover books I have. The recipes are new and modern and definitely give an updated alternative to other books that are out there. You will definitely find all of your traditional recipes and many more. For example, the veal pocket with apple stuffing is so amazing that my family wants me to make this more than once a year. Also, these recipes are easy to double if necessary especially if you are serving a large crowd. I have been using this collection for years and had to order a second one when I thought I lost my first copy. Well, it's nice to know that I will have an extra one to give to someone who enjoys cooking for the holidays as much as I do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lavish illustrations but too few recipes
Ibought this book shortly after it first came out, in hopes of improving my Passover repertoire. Passover can be a true culinary challenge for those who keep kosher. No pasta, no pizza,no sandwiches--and two major "dinner parties" (seders) to give! There's nothing like a batch of new recipes to liven up the menu.

Frankly, "The Passover Table" was a disappointment. The book only has forty-three recipes, and many of them are for old standbys like chicken soup, matzoh balls, chopped liver, roast chicken, and a very basic pot roast. For those, any Jewish cookbook will do.Friedland includes a number of interesting Sephardic recipes, but they're not enough to justify the price of the book. The illustrations are plentiful and generally very lovely, but their lavishness underlines the thinness of the content. As for the recipes themselves, I've had a 50-50 success rate for the ones I've tried, and I've had minor problems with most of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passover Table: new & Traditional Recipes for Your Seders Pa
Fantastic Recipes - all work out - I have made at least 80% of them over the past 4 years - and use this book as my staple for the two seders !

Good alternative recipes from the old traditional ones - and each recipe has a picture along with it - for ideas of presentation.

I strongly recommend this book to EVERYONE !

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Passover favorites in a beautiful format
I use this book year in and year out to raves. The recipes are classics and they always work. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to know which Passover book to buy because it has never let me down. ... Read more
