Product Description
Of all Nature's secrets, none have been pursued more eagerly than her aphrodisiacs -- those substances rumored to arouse sexual desire, fan the flames of passion, and boost sexual drive and vigor.Through the centuries the search for aphrodisiacs has produced an array of substances "guaranteed" to enhance sex -- everything from oysters, shrimp, and the infamous Spanish fly to human sweat, bull genitals and powdered rhinoceros horn.

Is there any truth behind the sexy reputation of such fabled aphrodisiacs? Are there natural substances that can enhance sex? If so, which ones? How do they work -- and why?

NATURE'S APHRODISIACS examines those questions, separating fact from fiction, superstition from science in a well-researched, comprehensive guide to Nature's aphrodisiacs and what they can do for you.

NATURE'S APHRODISIACS takes a fresh, candid look at natural aphrodisiacs and brings you up-to-date on what works and what doesn't.You will explore the aphrodisiac power of herbs, aromatherapy, pheromones (odorless sexual attractants), foods, and nutritional supplements. What's more, you will learn natural ways to affect your levels of neurotransmitters and hormones -- body chemicals that control sexual desire, pleasure, and performance.

NATURE'S APHRODISIACS examines psychological aspects of sexual arousal, as well.It offers a variety of natural substances to calm the mind, alleviate anxiety, and make you feel like singing, "I'm in the mood for love!"It also discusses natural therapies for erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, premature ejaculation, and frigidity.

NATURE'S APHRODISIACS is an invaluable quick-reference.It is also a good read. You will explore these and dozens of other intriguing topics:

**The "sexiest," most-hyped vitamin in your nutritional arsenal

**The time of the month when a woman is most susceptible to male pheromones.

**Why you crave chocolate at the end of a love affair

**Over-the-counter and prescription drugs that may be ruining your sex life

**DHEA -- Is it right for you?

**The only FDA-approved herb for treating impotence

**Proteins and carbohydrates: how the order in which you eat them affects your sex life

**Why sweat is a powerful sexual attractant for many

**The hormone most responsible for arousing sexual desire in both men and women

**An herb used in beer that reduces the sex drive in men but increases it in women

**Why the scent of musk is the universal aphrodisiac for both sexes

**The fragrance most sexually stimulating for older men

**Why a low-calorie diet may be your worst sexual enemy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The latest research on natural aphrodisiacs
Nancy Nickell is an educational writer, lecturer, research, and textbook author in the subjects of food, nutrition, and alternative therapies, In Nature's Aphrodisiacs, Nickell's surveys and carefully examines the latest research on natural aphrodisiacs for initiating, restoring, or augmenting human sexuality for men and women. There have been folk lore and folk medicine with respect to substances found in nature and thought to enhanced human sexuality. Nickell's explores the question as to whether or not there are scientific explanations or verifications for everything from oysters to powdered rhinoceros horn. Nature's Aphrodisiacs clearly separates fact from fiction, and superstition from science, as the non-specialist general reader is capably informed as to what genuine aphrodisiacs really are, and what they can do when properly administered. Very highly recommended for personal, academic, and community library human sexuality reading lists and reference collections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This book is very well organized and easy to understand. I do think more recent books are better as they are far more current.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Guide to Herbal Remedies
The book is divided into five sections. It's extremely thorough
How to Use Herbs explains herb use in different parts of the world. It lists types of plants used in remedies. Then it reviews the effects of different herbs on the nervous system, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, etc.It lists sources of herbs (root, bark, leaf, flower, oils, etc.)It tells forms that herbs are taken in (infusions, decoctions, capsules, tinctures, glycerates, syrups, etc.)
The second part of the book reviews Body Systems and types of herbs used for different conditions.A diagram of the human body shows what area certain herbs are used for and gives a page for more details on each. For instance it lists 11 herbs used for PMS.
The third section has the A-Z Herbal Prescriber.Look up the conditon by name (ADHD, colitus, cough, etc.).
Part four covers Herbal Sources, Dosage & Safety.
Part five contains Herbal Resources (addresses and a bibliography) & the Index.

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential reference for any herbalist

** A mirror image of his homeopathic book, which I also recommend**

Asa Hershoff, ND, is a naturopathic physician, chiropractor and homeopath who also uses herbal remedies. What a resume :) He also owns and runs an actual practice, which is a refreshing change for an author of natural healing. Andrea Rotelli, ND, is also a naturopath who uses flower essenses, herbalism and medical astrology. The qualified mixture here holds promise.

This book is more of a reference manual than anything else, so never buy it expecting more than that or you will be dissapointed. It is not an 'herbal', as no herbs are given in detail. It also has absolutely ZERO formulas, remedies, recipes, or combinations. Again, it's a reference - and an excellent one at that.

The first section on How to Use Herbs was fascinating as, although it was short and sweet, the authors go over the history of herbs in different parts of the world, from Global to Asian to Indian, to North American. The history of medicine is always fascinating and enough detail is given here to provide fuel for more learning in other sources. He also includes some small sections of plant constituents, much like Hoffman does in his illustrated holistic herbal.

A different thing about this book is that it's followed by the effects various herbs have, but on the systems, which is how this book is categorized. There are several interesting points brought up in the how to use herbs section, as well as history and info, and all done from an actual healers standpoint, not overly cautious and theoretical, but with enthusiasm and belief. A nice change.

The next is the heart of the book. Each body system is divided, with drawings by Asa, and then the conditions are in alphabetical order.

Frankly the organization IS a bit confusing (you'll see what I mean when you need something and it's not just alphabetical order), but it's doable. Each condition is introduced with a brief note on cause and conditions, and an overview of treatment needed (not just herbal) After this herbs are listed, with 3 - 4 lines under the herb name. On each line is a different point on why this herb should be used, pretty nifty. By each herb name are stars, one being a recommended herb but with a weak effect, and the larger number (guessing five) showing how strongly it affects.

It ends with a brief wrap up of herbs covered.

Overall this is meant to be a quick reference guide and doesn't try to claim itself as anything else. It's good for a cinch, and I always turn here for conditions, along with other herbs. FOr one thing it almost always seems to mention an herb other sources don't , or bring up a reason for usage others don't. It stands out from the crowd because of this, and because of this reason is why I also regard it so highly.

If you're in need of a good reference, here's one to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and to the point!
This book is a great quick reference for the layman and clinician alike. The material is organized well with plenty of references and scientifically based uses. I use this little gem when I am in a hurry and needsomething quick, concise, accurate and to the point. This book is definitely worth having around. I will never get rid of my copy.
Paul Riner M.S.,C.H.,M.T.,L.Ac.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners and experienced herbalist

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult
I think its a good book but its difficult to follow and recommends herbs foreign to the average person's experience. Needs about ten more good pages of simplifying the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Healing Gift
I feel incredible gratitude to author for the dedication it took for her to write this book.I used this book while I was a student, and continue to use now that I am a practicing Acupuncturist.More than theory and practical information, Leslie shares her valuable experiences at just the right times to make complex ideas understandable.

This is one of the only herbal books on Chinese Medicine and Chinese Herbology that both makes sense to the western mind and stays true to holistic principles of Chinese Medicine.

Chinese medical diagnostics and pattern identification are explained clearly. Excellent tables of pattern diagnosis and indicated herbal treatments are given. Clear explanations of common western herbs in the context of Chinese medicine are listed in her excellent Materia Medica.

For the serious student of herbology, this book is invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a try
Good book, detailed and easy to follow.I bought to perhaps help deal with my uti's without antibiotics and so far nothing has helped.I'm still trying though.Still a lot of great information and wroth a read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Healing with the Herbs of Life
This book had alot of good information but it would have been nice if they could have included a glossry of terms of a dictionary for some of the words. I couldn't even find half of the words in a regular dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heal Beyond Symptoms
Lesley Tierra's book is a refreshing look at the old system of energetic herbology. While many herbals focus on healing the ailments, this book introduces the concept of healing the energy imbalance. As such, it is not a reference book for a quick fix. It teaches a different philosophy for using herbs.

Western medicine once used such a concept as the equilibrium between humors. In "Healing with the Herbs of Life", the author uses the Chinese energetic system. She explains why an energetic approach to healing with herbs is more efficient than the ones dealing with symptoms.

This is a very useful book for curious amateur or professional herbalists and energy healing students:

Part 1 deals with herbal fundamentals such as herb chemistry, energy and a materia medica (dictionary of herbs) of 148 herbs from all over the world.

Part 2 discusses the energetic causes of illness, its energy, the process of healing according to the chinese five elements system and a compendium of specific conditions to treat with herbs, always in an energetic perspective and with general guidelines that may apply (keeping in mind that every ill person is different).

Part 3 deals with the energy of food, living with the seasons, herbal preparations.

There is also a complete appendice of resources, bibliography and glossary. An index to identify the names of herbs in their common names, latin names, chinese name and sanskrit name is included at the end.

Completely worth its price since it is so well done and complete. ... Read more
