When our homes feel cluttered and our lives seem overburdenedwith stuff, it's tempting to postpone change indefinitely because wethink we need a bigger place to accommodate everything. Not so,declares this handsomely photographed, advice-filled volume. Beyondreassessing your possessions and getting rid of what you reallydon't need, clever storage strategies include installing above-bedshelving instead of nightstands, using decorative trunks to double asend tables, keeping the floor very clear to retain a sense ofspaciousness even when the walls are packed with shelves andcupboards, or installing pull-out units to take advantage of everyinch of space. Wilhide stylishly declutters every room in the house(even children's rooms) with great-looking and very doableschemes. --Amy Handy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Suggests new ways to think about maximizing room space
This is one of the first books I read which suggested truly individualized ways for home owners, office planners, etc..to think about the way they used their space - rather than suggesting a cookie cutter approach to room and storage function. I really liked that approach.
This point was driven home early in the book where one homeowner showcases a collection of lunchboxes - not something that just anyone would collect - and, obviously, requiring an innovative use of wall space to highlight them.In other, more traditional rooms, other storage ideas were suggested, along with floor plans to make the maximum use of space. There is a strong emphasis on form, function and aesthetics - in short, great ideas which also look good.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment
A few helpful hints among 160 pages of wasted space. Not a solution in the book.Nice pictures, but not practical for the family looking for storage and orgainzation ideas.Even the choice of font and layout make this one difficult to read.If you are looking for a practical home orgainization book (I was looking for a home office organization book), skip this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more...
I was anticipating more forward thinking solutions to the home organization problem.I was not, however, disappointed with the photographs.Having recently purchased the Lighting Design Sourcebook by Wilhide, I knew, at the very least I would be getting some beautiful photos. The book is broken down into areas of the home (kid's rooms, living spaces...)and attacks each one separately offering "stylish" storage solutions. This book is clearly aimed at the homeowner looking to throw out the cardboard closet organizer and add a built-in, not the professional designer looking to supplement a design library with novel storage design resolutions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great plan to a clean house.
The Big Clean was a great read for me. It was a straight forward book about organizing and cleaning your house. I'm not a huge fan of cleaning, but this book really got me motivated. I particularily liked the tips on how to save money, as well as what to do with your old stuff once you clean it out of the closets. The book was well organzied and gives a person everything they need to do in order to get that clean house and then everything they need to do in order to maintain it. And that's exactly what I needed. Additionally, it was entertaining and funny. The best part of this was that life truly does get easier once you have a system of organizing and cleaning your house and this book gave me that. ... Read more

Desk drowning in papers? No room for the car in the garage? Santa still sitting on the roof in May? A less-is-more philosophy is great, but we all still have way too much stuff. The home office swallows up whole rooms, as does the family computer station. Then there's the home gym, the TV room, and the playroom, not to mention our collections - books, CDs, toys. Time management experts agree that when the minor things that take up space in the mind are eliminated, there is room to think about the big things. The same goes for the home. The visual clarity that comes from de-cluttering rooms, finances, and time promotes mental clarity, peacefulness, and contemplation. When everything is organized, it is easier to enjoy the meaningful things in life.

Organizing Plain & Simple is like a course from an expert teacher, grounded in the fundamentals and enriched with philosophy, tips, anecdotes, illustrations - everything necessary to make home and life run more smoothly. Donna Smallin takes a personalized, nonjudgemental approach to explaining how to assess each individual's situation and suggesting where to start organizing - room by room - and then covers how to stay organized. Then she offers advice on organizing time and finances, as well as organizing for the seasons and for special events - the birth of a baby, combining households, a move, kids going off to college, successful downsizing. Smallin presents a broad range of innovative solutions in the running feature "One Challenge, Three Solutions" that includes tips for solving classic organizational issues from a wide range of professional organizers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense
I really enjoyed this book at first, but I never actually put what I read to use.Maybe it is due to the fact that I had already read most of what this book contains. It is all pretty common-sense stuff that you have probably heard of before, but if you don't have a reference like this, it is worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
I found this to be a useful book on how to get organized, and I was already mostly organized anyway, but not being an expert in this area I was looking for help on how to improve and be even better. This book was good for that. I've seen several books on getting organized (unfortunately I don't recall the other titles) but this was the one I liked the best.

Besides having useful tips for getting rid of and organizing all the clutter, it also has chapters on organizing your time, finances, work, home life, and transitions (such as moving, the seasons, your estate), and so on. Most people who have too much clutter have behaviors that are dysfunctional and this book deals with that too, on how to effect changes that will enable you to stay organized once you've finished. This is just as important as knowing how to get organized because otherwise you'll just end up undoing all your good work.

The chapters for organizing the home are divided up by rooms--kitchen, bedroom, family room, etc.--even hallways get discussed. And to get you motivated, the author explains why it pays to un-clutter and to get organized and the benefits of being better organized. Other extras like helpful checklists and an entertaining and practical test to find your "organizing I.Q." were helpful too. There are some "general principles" to organizing that are good to know such as keeping it simple, and breaking down big or complicated organizing tasks into smaller chunks so they're not quite so daunting.

All in all this is a useful book on a topic that most of us can probably use some help with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great organizing reference book
I found this book very useful while starting my career as a professional organizer. Smallin offers a complete resource for organizing everything from individual rooms to time to finances to estates. I like that she also offers do-it-yourself as well as store-bought solutions.

She offers tips and various solutions for common problems as well as calls on other experts to share their advice. I particularly enjoyed the "One Challenge. Three Solutions." sections throughout the book. Here a challenge is presented (e.g. "I don't know how to organize my photos.") and three different solutions are presented by experts.

The book could prove to be overwhelming to a reader picking up the book hoping it will be a magic tool to get organized, but if that person uses it as a reference guide and employs one section at a time, I think it will prove a useful guide to getting organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars space galore
I found spaces in my small apartment that I didn't know I had. Excellent book.
Love my new, uncluttered look and I can finally find things.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK
I really loved this book. I have to say that I think it's fantastic and I am applying stuff to my own life now.
I am sorting through a couple of junk drawers and throwing out papers and magazines. (recylcing).
I really love another kindle book I bought on Kindle because I am a shopaholic and it really helped me
to stop shopping so I don't bring ANY more into my house. That's why the clutter starts with me. I bring
more and more in, even though I don't need it!.Why? I am now figuring it out and seeing objects in a new way
with my new kindle book. The book is great it's called 101 Ways to Stop Shopping and Start Saving on Kindle store.
I didn't buy one
thing this past weekend and that is a huge improvement for someone like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step decluttering
I am still working through this book but finding it to be a great help, guiding me in a step by step decluttering process. This is more than just helping you realize why you have become a clutter bug and attitude changes that need to be made.It helps walk you through the rooms of your home learning what to get rid of and how to organize what is worth keeping.I strongly recommend downloading the free workbook that is available on their web site. It has some great charts to help through the process. There is also additional free information available at their site.I would highly recommend this book to those desiring to free themselves from a clutter mentality.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I purchased this book because it had good reviews and I needed help with all my clutter. What I found after reading half of the book were suggestions on how to throw out things and what I should buy to help with that process. The actual definition of clutter is not excess but rather things disorganized and scattered. I myself have a lot of room in my house but things are scattered everywhere. I don't feel I necessarily have excess, just disorganization. I don't fell like just throwing things out, as they suggest, will solve my problem. This book offered very little, if any, help on how to get the "clutter" organized and be able to function. It also has a section on meal planning which has nothing to do with what I would understand as clutter. I would not suggest this book to anyone unless you are prepared to throw out a lot of what you may want and not shop for things you'd like to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but pulls a bunch of stuff together...
Okay, here's the thing. There is absolutely nothing new in this book (except the binder clip idea - genius! - read the book to find out what I mean). There is no magic pill you can take and suddenly be one of those super organized people. I read a good number books, blogs, etc about organizing your home/office/email/life - flylady can totally kiss my butt, by the way. Nowadays, I pull one or two things from them and go on. It's like that with any self-help book, I suspect. But while reading it, it kind of crossed my mind. She's already done that. Taken the best of the ideas - most were variations of other advise I've heard over the year, tweaked to her own way of doing things - and put them in one book. For someone that doesn't read a lot, this is the perfect book because a lot of the work has been done for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Advertisement for her business....
While there is some extremely valuable information contained in this book, the constant references to "our paid clients", etc. are offensive and distracting for those who truly want to apply the ideas.Apparently if I am really smart, I will apply their "ruler" to my situation and just pay some one to fix my situation and add this book to the "give away" pile!

I have decided not to let the repetitive "commercials" prevent me from getting my money's worth out of the book I already paid for though. After eleven chapters of the propaganda, I just took a minute to get a piece of card stock and a marker and am "editing" out the references so I can use the information without the insinuations that i need to spend more money on the author's website subscriptions or services or cannot apparently apply the information without them! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clutter be gone!
Really like this book so far. Not quite finished. Full of great hints for getting organized and decluttering(is that a word?). I'm still hoping to have my closet look like the one on the front of the book though :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh My, I'm not alone!
Sandra's words are comforting, encouraging, inspiring and right on target when it comes to identifying the Messie! It helps so much to know that I'm not alone. She gives some real practical ideas to use and start right away to overcome some of the struggles being a Messie involves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep Reading
I think this is a great book. It started out a little dry and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed that it didn't have any pictures or diagrams. She offers very practical tips and it has really motivated me to work on my house and to clean out and de-clutter and even to change my daily habits.I would highly recommend this book. It's easy to read a chapter and then go put it into practice.I'm about 1/2 way through and can't wait to read the remaining chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars No substance
As organizing books go, they usually fit into at least one of 3 categories: 1) hints/tips, 2) 'clutter psychology/personality types, or 3) managing (getting rid of/finding storage for).

The author has tried to do all three and ended up doing none. Although the book claims to have one-hour activities, there's really little meaningful substance at all. There's no clear progression where any activity builds on or logically follows another, so the whole thing feels kind of random.

Only a couple of pages are devoted to each day, and these examples are quoted from the book:

* Envision your goals.
* Stick to a system.
* Wear glasses that darken automatically in the sun.
* Serve dinner dishes on the kitchen counter.
* Drop out of a group or club.
* Stop sending Christmas cards.
* Look down the road for trouble.
* Give away unwanted, outgrown, or downright unpleasant items.

That last one is the most disturbing of all. If it's "downright unpleasant," why would you give it to anyone?

If the book didn't have Sandra Felton's name printed right on the cover, I wouldn't have believed she authored it.

If your clutter problem is just annoying, you won't get anything from this book you're not already doing or didn't already know. If you're a serious clutterbug, you won't find anything here that will help you make any major impact on your clutter.

5-0 out of 5 stars May take more than 40 days, but definitely worth it!
This should actually be "40 STEPS (rather than DAYS) to a Well-Ordered Home and Life." I love the idea of becoming Martha Stewart in less than two months, but, unfortunately, it took me six months to get through the book. (I wanted to implement each chapter before moving on to the next.) And I'm still not Martha Stewart.

This is a great book! The author offers practical and sound advice for behavioral change. It's not a book of "put this here and buy this organizing tool." Rather it is a collection of tiny steps to help people change their behavior toward more organized living. The author doesn't want to give people cleaning schedules; she wants to help people maintain clean and organized homes by encouraging clean and organized habits. The book design is colorful (quite feminine, but I'm a woman, so I didn't mind too much) and easy to read. Sidebars and shoutouts are prevalent. The chapters are short making it perfectly bite-sized reading.

Final Thoughts: Definitely RECOMMENDED.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
Since I have watched Mission Organization on television, it was great to review a lot of the tips in the book.I found this book to be a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars HGTV Mission: Organization
I would rate this 3 stars only not the 5 that are showing...a clich.

Nicely done book, but was hoping for a little more in-depth information. It is a great little reminder of things seen on HGTV, but so easily forgotton during are far too busy schedules.

2-0 out of 5 stars no real strategies
The author simply lists some common sense things people do, but never gives any unique ideas or strategies.

If any of these issues describe you or someone you know - Get Order!

*Surfaces layered with everything from the past month (or year)
*Filing systems that are junk drawers of disorganized papers
*The inability to know where to start and how to do so

Sample portion of Chapter 1 From the Book:

Chapter 1 - Harmony
Simplify - The Key to Improving Your Life
“Being in balance is not always about getting more things done in a given amount of time, but giving more time to the things you want to get done.”

Achieving Balance:
It is essential to know where you are headed before selecting the best path to get there. This is especially true when determining your priorities and your goals. When determining the priorities in my own life, I rely on a sure-fire way of making a decision. I ask myself one question:
If I were on my deathbed, what would I regret not having made more time for?
Based on the answers, determine the direction you want to take in various areas of my life. Then create a list of what you want to do, which you can use to schedule the years and months ahead. From that
point, identify and sort tasks into weeks, days, and hours.

When you find yourself saying, “Gosh, I wish I didn’t have to do this, or waste my time doing that,” it is time to reassess your priorities. I learned a great deal from listening to motivational speaker Tony Robbins who said, “Ask yourself a better question and you will get a better answer.” So instead of asking, Why can’t I ever do what I want to do? Why is there so much to
do all the time? or Why do I never have any free time? try asking some of these “better” questions:
What can I do that would be more enjoyable?
If I had more time on my hands, what would I do with it?
What could I stop doing to relieve stress?
What could I give up, even for a short time, that would free up some of my time?
How can I make my work more efficient (easier, more fun, etc.)?
How can I make this space look better?
Where can I put this paper where I will find it again?
What can I do with these things to get them off the floor, yet have
them accessible?

Are you getting the idea?

By asking yourself a more specific and positive question, you allow the creative part of your brain to come up with a better answer. Try this approach any time you are stuck in a situation where an easy answer does not seem apparent. The above idea I’ve shared has been put into practice not only in my own life, but in the lives of many others struggling with similar challenges. My previously over-complicated life caused me
to suffer. The suffering took the form of less time with my children (which my children and I hated), less time with my husband (which my husband and I hated), and no time for myself (which I hated). After becoming frustrated enough to want to make drastic changes, I made a
list of all my commitments and responsibilities, i.e., the number of hats I was wearing. I tracked these over a period of several months. The list was staggering. The huge number of projects I was involved in, businesses I was running, and activities I was scheduling clearly caused the
feeling of doom which loomed over me. I was headed for burnout.

Don’t Put Too Much On Your Plate! ........

5-0 out of 5 stars This book taught me a thing or two!
I've been a full-time professional organizer since 1998, and still learned a lot from this book! There were approaches, ideas, and products included that I had never heard of and can't wait to implement in my garage and my clients' garages.I especially liked the conversational tone of the book, and the various icons--Dollar Wise, Safety, Take it to the Max, and Barry's Best--that offered excellent information.Another helpful feature of the book is that for each type of organizing product recommended there are options to suit any budget.Best of all, you don't have to be a professional organizer to find this book helpful. The ideas for getting your garage organized are complete, straight-forward, and take into account a wide-range of variables.Be sure to read this book before you attempt your next garage intervention!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Garage Organization Book
Organize Your Garage in No Time was everything I thought it would be and more....easy-to-implement ideas and great pictures that not only guide you to the garage of your dreams but also helps you see the finished product before it's done! Not only is it true to its claim that you really can organize your garage in no time--it's fun to read and the strategies in it will help you organize any room of your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I enjoyed reading this book because I felt it was the first organizing book in which the other thinks the way I do. It was a refreshing change from othe organizing books. The topics were clear and the suggestions were practical. It is also unique in the use of images showing products out on the market that are mentioned in the book. I was happy to see things covered that I hoped I would find in a book on garages and was intriqued by others I didn't know about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have read a lot of books regarding garages and this so far is the best one on step-by-step how to do it. The author has experience and knowledge and ability to put it in an easy to read book.
The basis for organizing can also apply to closets and other things.
Book is in a format that allows you to read only what applies to you.
I highly recommend this book for someone starting on this seemingly overwhelming task

5-0 out of 5 stars Good to read before a big kitchen project.
The first time I read this book, I liked her ideas fairly well but wasn't as impressed as I was with _Confessions of an Organized Homemaker_ or _Confessions of an Organized Family_.However, now that we're planning topaint our kitchen and have to babyproof it, I reread this book with neweyes.

I found the discussion of ABCD items to be very helpful; theconcept of work centers was also useful, though I'm not sure I'm going toapply it in quite the way she describes -- our kitchen is so small that itdoesn't make a great difference. She has also sold me on "accruedbenefits" -- make a double batch and freeze half for later. All inall, it was very useful for me, and I definitely enjoy her writing style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chore centers make organization a snap!
Have read this three times and am buying it now.Originally read when renovating my kitchen, helped me plan logically. It was as if a light went on with the chore center concept and keeping things at the point of firstuse, not where everything else in that "category" is kept.Mykitchen is so easy to work in now, no more extra steps getting things, they're within arms reach! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a godsend.
An amazing book that held my hand through the entire organization process. It helped alleviate my overwhelming feeling of dealing with my stuff. What a godsend.

This book was published in 1993, but I, at the least, would greatly appreciate and feel there is a need for an updated version with new ideas and suggestions on how to keep up with today's innovations, etc. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my Bible
I would recommend this book to anyone who ever felt lost in a sea of their own stuff.I latched onto the 'box storage system' right away, read it again and picked up some paperwork tips, after the third time I tried the meal planning calendar and my life has been changed forever.Husband loves it.I love it.Go Pam!
