Boys Town publishes FANTASTIC books on managing students and their behavior, but this book really hits on the challenges inner city teachers face. As teachers, we have to create positive classroom cultures that allow our students to have a safe place to learn and feel accepted.This book does such a great job at walking a teacher through the process of handling tough situations and creating a learning environment.I used this book all the time during my 1st two years teaching.You should check out other Boys Town books. ... This series will produce one issue annually and focus on selected themes each year. Each monograph will highlight the most comprehensive and robust theory and practice. The Executive Board and membership of the Family, School, Community Partnership Special Interest Group of the Amer-ican Educational Research Association serves as the sponsor of this series.

This group will determine the themes and topics for each monograph. The theme for this first monograph is "Promising Practices for Family Involvement in Schools." This volume will address major frameworks for understanding family involvement and government support of family involvement projects in the initial chapters. The following six chapters present a theoretical base for understanding school, family, and commu-nity partnerships and research supporting promising practices. Included within each chapter are examples of research in action, focusing on spe-cific interactive activities or programs designed to bring families and schools together. Such promising practices are organized into chapters dealing with two-way home-school communication, family literacy projects, school-site parent centers, parent- school collaborative governance, and family-school education programs spanning infancy through young adult-hood. The monograph concludes with a chapter on teacher preparation for work with family, school, and community partnership issues.

Besides their research expertise, each author brings a unique back-ground as classroom teacher, parent, and community social advocate to their writing. A very helpful and enjoyable read.The stories really helped to bring the book into the context of our daily lives.It was easy to relate to many of the families in the book...and Bempechat's advice was reasonable and easyto follw.She didn't make the reader feel like there was an absolute"right and wrong" way, but points out some of the pitfalls we, asparents, all find ourselves in when trying to motivate our children inschool.
