The British Hong Kong period began in the 19th century when the British, Dutch, French, Indians and Americans saw China as the world's largest untapped market. The British empire launched their first and one of the most aggressive expeditionary forces to claim the territory under Queen Victoria in 1840, three years after she became the queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The territory that would later be known as Hong Kong was gained from the last dynasty of Imperial China. In the short span of just a few decades, Hong Kong was transformed from a rocky undeveloped mountainous terrain to a major entrepot for global trade. Through the Opium Wars and a series of treaties, the British were able to legitimately claim the territory until 1997. Early social and economic problems did exist in the colony, as there were drastic differences between Eastern and Western philosophy and culture. It is currently an intermediate station on the West Rail Line. The station was built to alleviate surface traffic jams and passenger congestion at Kowloon Tong Station. The distance from Hung Hom to the station is about one kilometre with the journey time of less than two minutes. This station is linked with Tsim Sha Tsui Station of the Tsuen Wan Line by subways (underground pedestrian tunnels). East Tsim Sha Tsui station was opened on 24 October 2004 as a southward extension of the East Rail Line from Hung Hom Station, and served as the southern terminus of the East Rail Line until 16 August 2009. The predecessor of the East Rail Line is the Kowloon-Canton Railway (British Section), which was opened in 1910. At the time of opening, its southern terminus was the old Kowloon Station located in Tsim Sha Tsui, where the Clock Tower stands today.
