First of all, my background and why this book came to be...

Most PHP/MySQL books on the market that I have read were not written for the novice. To be honest, even I struggled with “PHP For Dummies”, although I’ve been working with HTML and another programming environment, ColdFusion, for years. So, WHY was PHP so hard for me? I think it was a number of things, but most of all because with HTML and ColdFusion experience, I was used to a TAG based language. For everything there was a tag, like this:



...which is a ColdFusion tag to output processed information. PHP is not based on tags like that. No, PHP more resembles a (ugh) Programming Language. If you are intimidated by that, never fear - I’m going to do my best to explain the examples in plain english!

So, who is this book for?

This book is for the lonely people who can’t get a da...hold on...wrong book...”I Hate PHP” is for webmasters and designers who have always wondered what PHP could do for them; someone who wants to “do” some PHP and not outsource it. It is best to be familiar with HTML and writing / deciphering HTML code. You don’t need to be a top-notch “I do it all in Notepad” kinda person - just being able to open up a text editor and understand the code is enough. Copy / Paste knowledge is helpful too.

Unlike other PHP books on the market, we are not going to attempt to cover every single facet of the Wide World Of PHP Language. No, we want to grasp the basics of the language, get familiar with it, and get some real-life examples...not have the whole thing shoved down our throat!

What a great and easy way to learn HTML
This book is , I think , the best to learn HTML. There'is all the TAG and they tell you what to do when you have a problem. Frustrating!
I swear the author of this book goes out of his way to make its readers feel incompetent. While full of useful information, this book is also just as full of typos and inconsistancies.

Do you want to know how frustrating it is to try and re-create a page using the code given to you in a book, have the page come out looking nothing like the example in said book, then finding out the reason for the discrepency is because the author actually coded their example differently? Well there's plenty of opportunities in this book!

I now have to learn inline CSS which I believe might have been covered to some extent in this book. I can't remember. That's how badly I want to forget this book! I'm sticking with CSS for Dummies!

Great once you know the basics
Use this book once you have Pence's basic HTML book down. It will provide many new tools to spruce up your exist web programming.

great textbook but needs to professional editing
It is a great hands on textbook. The author did a great job conveying concepts. Easy to understand especially talking about codes. However a lot of typing error and project data or instructional errors. Misspelled in a lot of places. Information inconsistency. Requires professional editing services. I think the author should continue to write these book. Pence is a good writer but need to make sure information, data or examples are consistent. It hinders the student when trying to do the projects.

Earnest & Thoughtful, but Repitious and Full of Typos
This book covers basic CSS. It succeeds in offering a very gentle and fairly comprehensive overview of CSS1 features, with some CSS2. However, his constant warning about the lack of robust support for CSS in browsers is somewhat dated and tiring. The book is also full of annoying typos that at times prevent examples from working--a missing period here, a misplaced semi-colon there. Perhaps to make the chapters (called "Modules" here) independent, there is quite a bit of repetition of the same ideas in many chapters. The gradual introduction of CSS syntax and techniques also seems to incourage the author to use examples that mix CSS and traditional html in ways that are not good CSS practice, just apparantely oversimplified examples to make simple points about transitioning from HTML to specific CSS features. That distinction could be lost on a lot beginners who don't get a more solid understanding of how to use CSS to build more complete and consistent pages and websites. I therefore wish the author would have included more comprehensive examples, rather than lots of smaller out-of-context and disconnected ones. This book is not terrible. I just think you could probably do better now. I would give it 2 1/2 stars if I could.

Very good book for CSS Beginners
This book teaches what it claims to teach. It teaches CSS 1 for everyday tasks you would perform. It also teaches you how to create entire layouts using CSS. I strongly recommend this book to those who have just learned HTML and want to go ahead. This book also gives overview of very basics of CSS 2.

The book is well structured and includes hints, tips and other similar helpful stuff along the way.

Of course reading a book does not really make you a master unless you think and work hard yourself as well. So if you know HTML then this shud be your next step. ... Read more

Not so Hot
I am currently using this book in a class on XML.It has been used sparingly, thank God, by our instructor.The main book we rely on for good advise and examples of XML is written by Elizabeth Castro.If you don't want to waste your money on a book which is not very clear, concise, or written in a well defined and orderly manner, don't purchase this book.I have worked in the field of computer programming and written in 9 different computer languages, as well as, learning others.Take it from me, there are better books on this subject.

CAUTION: Not really a "beginner's guide"
The book does a good job with explaining topics such as using XML as a database and using DOM to interface with XML.It is also a good book if you work in the Microsoft web technologies (ASP, VBScript), since many of the examples use ASP and VBScript to interface with the XML document.

However, I had to give it only three stars because it is not really a book for people new to programming, as this book advertises.A reader does need some kind of programming basics to understand some of the topics.Also, I think that the book glosses over the basics of XML.Even though the more intermediate topics like using XML as a database are explained well, a reader that is brand-new to XML could easily get lost because not enough emphasis was placed on the basics.

If you do work in the Microsoft technologies, and you want to learn and work with XML, then buy this book AFTER reviewing the free XML tutorial on [website]

A waste of time
This book went to the presses to soon.Every example is full of errors.Every example is lacking and fails to show what it is intended to show.To add to my frustrations, online resources are not updated either.There are far too few illustrations.Far too few cross references.I would recommend "The XML Companion" by Neil Bradley, Addison Wesley.Just flick through the books side by side for 10 seconds and you get what I mean.

what code?
just a warning- don`t be convinced by the "free code online" offer- they don`t give you a website, and if you do track it down from the publisher, you`ll discover its painful to use- that combined with the mistypes in the text and its a basket case.

other then that, the book is clear enough, but how can you learn a language without practice?

Frustrated with Examples and Coding errors
After reaching module 3 I became quite disappointed. The example in Module 2-1 is missing from the website and there are many coding and errors in the examples through out the book making it hard for a new comer to really learn what is right or wrong. Non Coder here.
Great for a n00b.Really helped me understand some things.Don't get me wrong PHP stuff is all over the net but sometimes, I hate to say it, we are all not plugged in and it helps to read (bathroom, car, airplane)That is why I don't just use the internet for reinforcement.

good intro to PHP
Most programming is intuitive, you have to catch on or you don't make it in the programming world... This is a really good intro to PHP.What you start with in this book can then be filled in and filled out with online resources and a sharing community of fellow programmers and techs.
And yes, PHP5 is in use now... but don't let that stop you from this introduction if you really want to jump in to implementing PHP for secure interactive content on your site!

This is the best PHP book I have found.
It is very helpful and includes quick reviews as well as practices to help gain hands-on experience. It starts with some very basic "this is what php is" and goes from there. It's definitely for beginners, and could even be for "Dummies." I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn PHP.

Condescending and Incomplete
I, for one, don't expect myself to know anything about a topic when I first start reading a book around it - especially when that book has the word 'Beginner' in the title.However, I DO expect the author to know quite a bit, and to pass on that knowledge.Others may find it excusable that, with recent releases of PHP (meaning 4.2.0 and later), the scripts in chapter four won't actually work with a default PHP configuration - but I don't.I found it infuriating to have such a result, especially since it took me about an hour to resolve.(Kudos to php.net's page on 'Using Register Globals' for explaining things.)
Also, what kind of author calls a project a 'Busy Box?!'C'mon.That's all I can say.C'mon.Osborne has put out some excellent books (such as Herb Schildt's C++ books), but this one is _not_ up to their standard.It's an easy read, and a reasonable way for an experienced programmer to pick up PHP quickly (aside from the aforementioned caveats), but there have GOT to be better books out there.

clear and easy to understand
This is my first review. I don't normaly write them except that I found this book to be exactly what I was looking for. I needed to learn php and I had to do it on my own.I am a complete beginner in this area.
The chapters were clear and concise. The code was explained without 'over explaining" it.
There are small quizes in each section to help reinforce the learning.
I didn't find any problems with the source code.
If you're looking for a place to start with php I don't think you can find a better book. ... Read more

Misleading packaging
Long story short: after getting this book I am still an absolute beginner. I bought MS Frontpage a few months ago and needed something to help me to get my first web site going without having to become an expert in web design or rocket science. I suppose you could call me an absolute beginner.
The problem is: this book is about authoring web sites using CODE. Text editors. Like programmers do. I am not a programmer or an engineer or anything like that. I am an absolute beginner. Let me tell you this - absolute beginners DO NOT USE code. They use wysiwig programmes. That is what defines us - we cannot use code (yet) because we are absolute beginners. That is what defines us. If we were at the level of graduating to code, we would not be absolute beginners anymore.

This is possibly a brilliant book, but I will never know it because I cannot even understand the introduction.

I feel that I have been misled. This book is not what it claims. It is NOT an "Absolute beginner's guide". The cover further states "No prior web publishing experience necessary!" This is bull. (Luckily, I also bought David Karlins' EXCELLENT book Build Your Own Web Site which helped me tremendously and thanks to which I now have a very nice web site, thank you very much). Karlins' book also makes no outrageous claims on the cover, but gives simple tips and instructions which even a fool - sorry, I meant to say absolute beginner - like me has no problems following.

I object to misleading advertising and packaging. I fell for this one. They could easily have indicated on the cover that this book is NOT for beginners and covers only code, but they chose not to. This book is not what it claims to be. Stay away.

this is a really good book
After skimming a sad stack of "learn how to create web pages" books I found this.It isn't so basic as to be close to useless, nor an impenetrable tome of code.It is an excellent introduction which provides the big picture--it is easier to learn how to do something when you understand how it works--and step by step details for those new to xhtml.Don't be fooled by the cheesy design of the cover.This is a well-written book for intelligent beginners and the best choice in this category.

Not For Absolute Beginners is a better title
I am a true beginner, wondering how the heck to get a simple website started. I read the first 5 chapters, and I still don't know. Some very basic information seems to be missing, such as "How do I get the info from my computer to my web page? Can I preview what I'm doing? etc."

Best book for learning html code
I read this book three times then coded my first site.I knew nothing about html prior to reading the book.

It was fantastic to read a book that not only explained in fairly plain English what each tag is and how it works, it showed easy examples and lessons to follow.

Highly recommend this book to those who want to create their own website!

The title is misleading..
Sounds like a 'for dummies' book but is very far from it. Saying 'web pages' is simplified. This book covers site design from scratch minus the details and makes simple work of a convoluted subject. It doesn't show you simple web page stuff but is a complete outline of the entire web site design/development field. Incredible. From this, I can choose what complexities I wish to delve into further without chasing after marginally useful technologies. Being in the computer field since before PC's, I prefer simple straightforward explanations and find techspeak boring. For a book written in latter 2003, I find it far more current than some 2004 books I've seen. the future of the web is moving to simplified (thank you!) and being versed in structured computer development, this is the first time I've been able to garner any excitement for web design.
I've read all the IBM manauals I care to. This book does not talk down to you but it does cover from the basics. Not for the AOL user but more for a Compuserve sort. I'm so glad I chose this as my intro.My only gripe is the additional 'online' chapters located on the publisher's website were to be download files so I expected a pdf or something but instead found viewable pages sans the 'figures' (pictures) accompanying the text. Also, the author refers FAQs and things to his personal website which no longer exists. not kool. But the book's merits (including the price) still warrant 5 stars inmy book. ... Read more

Needs to be reworked.
This is not the best written book.I am learning a lot of stuff about FrontPage 2002, but I while reading the book I get the filling that it was by more than one person.Sometimes the 1st person is used, sometimes it is not.The steps in the books are not always clear and are overly wordy.Some of the steps seem to over explain process that had already be explain earlier, almost as if the author did not realize he had already explain them. You can learn with this book, but unless you're buying it at a very discounted price, by some other book.

Not Good
While this book is good at providing an overview of all of the features that are contained within FP, do not even try to use it as a reference book.The steps are so geared to his specific downloaded examples that you cannot translate the steps to whatever you are working on.More theory and less "...and now do this..." kind of content would have been way more helpful.The number of typos are extraordinary - here is my favorite "...you can set an included page with the text Welcome to automatically change to Merry Christams on December 31."Merry Christmas, Mr. Channathambi!

Excellent Book If You're New to FrontPage
This books is excellent if you are new to FrontPage or web design. The book is easy to read, provides good examples, and covers the key features of FrontPage plus a little more:website design, organization, images, tables, forms (email, confirmation pages, etc.). Though much of FrontPage's features (font, inserting images, tables, etc.) works similarly to MS Word, PowerPoint, or Publisher, I found Kirupa's book useful.

STRENGTHS
1. Easy to read and well-organized intro to the basics of FrontPage.
2. Kirupa has a website ... that serves as a valuable (and free) companion to the book. There, you can download examples of FrontPage functions and designs mentioned throughout his book. There's also discussion forum, among other information.
3. Kirupa personally answers questions via email. I sent him an email with a FrontPage question last night and got a response back from this afternoon. That's impressive.

OPPORTUNITY AREAS
I would rate the book with five stars if:
1. It included a very basic glossary of the key tools and inputs used in FrontPage. Kirupa provides excellent "how to" instructions to do a very specific task, e.g. "Click here, then click there, etc." However, in many cases, FrontPage gives you many other options within the same tool bar function. Without a glossary, it's hard to know why he chose not to click on the other options available.
2. I think there may be an over-reliance on learning FrontPage by rote. I like Kirupa's "training seminar approach", but the shortfall is that we rely a lot on his downloadable examples. Again, we follow his step-by-step instructions, but we don't really know why we click on "this" and not on "that".

Overall, the benefits of the book outweigh the opportunities. One must keep in mind that the book is meant for beginners, and Kirupa does a solid job here. I guess Kirupa taught the basics of FrontPage so quickly and easily that one can't help but want a detailed glosary in order to start learning some of the more advanced functions!

Front Page 2002: A beginner's guide - does a decent job of teaching you Frontpage, but it is overly simplistic.It takes forever to learn core tasks.The main fault I found with the book is that it is NOT concise! In a manual of this type, you want the author to get to the key points, efficiently communicate what you need to know, and move on.This book fails in this regard.That said, to it's credit, if you have the time, it does eventually get around to explaining how to use front page. ...
