Unique book!
This is a very unique book, each page shows another layer through the human body which helps little ones see exactly how things fit together.My 4 year old niece loves it, and is now explaining anatomy to anyone who will listen. It's a book that will last many years and will continue to help her learn more about the body as her understanding of anatomy and her ability to grasp more complex subjects increases.I highly recommend this book for children who express an interest in understanding how their bodies work.

Fantastic & original
This book is perfect for the visual learner. The model in the center has all the organs, bones and systems that move with the pages as you turn them. The information is also just right. The book was recomended to me by my anatomy and phisiology teacher- that's how Good it is. If they can use it as a teaching tool, it's good enough for me!
Best part is, I didn't pay nearly as much for it here on Amazon as I would have at a book store.

Very cool!
I ordered this to do an at-home science curriculum with my son, along with some other human body products.When this came, I thought it was very original and cool!I guess I didn't realize what it would be like when I ordered it, and it is a lot neater than I expected.My 8 year old son thinks it is interesting to look at, and easy to understand.Every page you turn basically removes a layer of the human body to uncover the next layer and descriptions corresponding to the newly uncovered organs, bones, muscles, etc.I have never seen anything like this book.Very unique idea!Great way to give your kids a hands-on experience when learning about the body and to learn how all our parts fit, and work, together.The only thing I took off a star for is the possible durability of this book.The body pieces are pretty fragile, and you have to close the book just so to get it to all fit together.Maybe this is why they rate it ages 9-12, too, because younger kids would probably destroy it.

Great Activities
I'm a former science teacher turned homeschool mom and I'm using this book to study the human body with my kids (grades 1 and 3).I admit that the text in the book is probably advanced for them, but we read through the sections paragraph by paragraph and sort out what they are talking about.The drawings in the book are really well done and help in explaining what the chapter is talking about.
I would have given the book five stars if it weren't for what seems to me to be a mismatch between complexity of the text and the simplicity of the activities.My children are very excited about the activities and get a lot of science out of them.But, I think that older kids that would understand the text right away might be bored with the majority of the activities.

Homeschooling Science
This is the first time I've used a book from Janice VanCleave's series of science books, and I have been very satisfied. We used "The Human Body" as the main textbook for a homeschool science unit that lasted about 6 weeks. I have three kids, two in 4th grade an one in 5th. They have loved the chapters' format--general information with defined key words in bold, along with exercises and activities. What I like most is that the book helps kids THINK about how the body works as a group of systems rather than just inundating them with information. The kids have enjoyed the activities/experiments that correspond to each chapter, and I like them because if materials are necessary (and not all activities require materials) they are household items (like cottonballs, a flashlight, bowls, hot water, etc.) that are on-hand. In addition to the book, we use a notebook to compile the vocabulary words, diagrams, exercises and results from experiments/activities. I am planning to use more of her books in the future.

Science Project Book
I paid extra to receive this book in a few days because my daughter was working on a science project and we needed the book very quickly. I ordered two books that day. The first one I received the next day. This book took almost a week to get here which was way too late and a waste of extra money to have it shipped quickly.

Not so much
While this is full of information, it wasn't really what I was looking for.This might be good for kids over 10/12, however it's presented w/ silly science experiments that they may be too cool for, by that age.
Basically, it's complex science w/ silly experiments.My daughter likes doing the experiments, but she doesn't get much out of them because the science is too advanced.

Be demanding like your children
My five year old is fascinated by the human body so I bought this book in additon to a basic anatomy book, What's the Big Secret? by Laura Krasny Brown and Marc Brown (creator of Arthur books), The Magic School Bus Inside Ralphie and The Human Body by Dr. Marie Rose.

The experiments featured in this book don't take very long to conduct and use the most basic household materials. Not all the experiments seemed instructive for his age but I'm looking forward to future explorations with him.

Because I have such a young audience, I had think up further applications of the concepts presented in order to make the experiments a more effective learning experience for him. For instance, the model lung we made effectively showed how the diaphragm allows us to take air into our lungs but what made a lasting impression was when I showed him how the diaphragm moves during a hiccup. Why wasn't this suggested in the book? A couple weeks later my son showed me how our neighbor smokes 'sticks' so I filled the model lung with molasses to represent how 'soot' from cigarette smoking interferes with lung expansion. The molasses made the model useless (and sticky) vividly demonstrating how 'soot' interferes with oxygen intake. I suspect VanCleave could come up with a better experiment to demonstrate how smoking harms lungs.

Other experiments are not as didactic but create intrigue about the human body. Both my five year old and three year old were thoroughly engrossed in an experiment from the chapter about modified skin cells (hair and nails) that involved testing the strength of different hair types. Although the hair experiment is memorable it's the only experiment offered in a chapter that really peaked their interest.

This book is a valuable part of our home library but I give it only three stars because my kids want to know more so I figure I should demand a little more from the title.

Outside & Inside the Human Body
Atlas of the Human Body is very detailed with both colorful illustrations and detailed text.It is written in a way that non-medical people can relate to.It's like having your own guided tour of the human body...Outside and Inside!You can find out the shape and size of organs and how they function - along with the disorders that each organ may encounter.As a yoga teacher, I appreciate the information in chapter five (The Human Body as a Whole) that features the skeletal and muscular systems - where all the information can be viewed on two facing pages.I use this atlas to accompany information from the "Anatomy Coloring Book" (Kapit/Elson) and some of the information on yoga poses from "Yoga Anatomy" (Kaminoff) to enhance my knowledge and provide more information to my students.

Review from medical student with no anatomy background
I reviewed this book before I delved into the topics of my first year med school anatomy class, and again before the test, and it's a big help. I wish that I had used it to study the limbs before my first exam.It has enough physiology for the first block of med school.It is not enough for medical school for sure, but it helped me put all the ideas from my textbooks together.

The book is old, but not particularly dated. Some of the terminology differs from Grey's anatomy, but it is a good supplementary text.You will definitely need Grey's or Netter's too.

The Human Body in Living Color.
It is a wonderful book for anyone interested to learn more about the human body and to see its intricade working. I never thought of the human body as an entity put together with so many working parts.

The beautiful drawings are a work of art and need special attention. Through this work of art I appreciate my body much more. A wonderful creation.

I would refer this book to anyone, who wants my opinion.

A great collection of information about the human body...
This is a wonderful book. I bought it for my six and nine year-olds, and we've had a lot of fun going through it together. It covers a lot of the science of the human body, and explains things well in a clear yet thorough way. There are over 100 facts and definitions of things covered; lots of "hands on" exercises; hundreds of line drawings and diagrams; and brief biographies of important scientists who contributed to the study of the human body.

All in all a great book chock full of info for kids, especially for the price.

What a Great Book!
I have to say the truth,this book is great. In school I amlearning about health in science,this book gave me information I neverever knew. Also it is very interesting since I want to be a docter when I grow up. Who (my age) knows that you are taller in the morning then you are at night? This book also has a glossary in the back to tell you definitions of bold words in the book that you might of never heard of! life's little quirks
Held does an excellent job of exploring and explaining some quirks of human anatomy. Through a series of interesting and provocative questions, he examines human development and evolution in an entertaining and didactic but rigorous way. Usingthe coined term "bislagiatt," an acronym for "but it seemed like a good idea at the time", and an array of fascinating diagrams with detailed explanations,the author sets out to show how the current discipline of evolutionary development, or evo-devo, can address some of the most fundamental aspects of human form, growth, and development.Questions such as why some parts of our anatomy are symmetric and others are not, why are arms different from legs, why men and women have different size and shapes, and why some of our structures seem ill-equipped for certain tasks, provide the basis for covering much of what is known about evolution, genetics, and development. "Quirks of Human Anatomy" would be quite useful as additional reading for any course on evolution or development. It also stands alone as a very worthwhile, very enjoyable scientific book.
