From the supplier: Shell Petroleum Development Co. maintains considerable influence on the politics and government of Nigeria. The company is believed to be providing valuable foreign capital to the country's repressive regime. Essentially, the company takes part in the government's effort to suppress internal dissent against oil companies. In Ogoni, Nigeria, Shell Petroleum Development Co.'s role in repression is more evident.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and provocative view of human rights.
There are so many intelligent and provocative ideas in this slim volume, it is difficult to do a succinct review. The book consists of two talks given by the Indian mystic, now known as Osho, his biography and a copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The latter document is laudable, say most; not Osho.He points out that its beautiful words hide the ugly reality of barbarous acts committed by governments every day. He goes on to discuss specific provisions of the Declaration. On the claim that we are equal:"There are not even two human beings who are equal--in any way, in any dimension. I don't mean that they are unequal, I mean that they are unique, incomparable, so the question of equality or inequiality does not arise...."(11)On the claim that we are endowed with reason and conscience he shows how we do not live by reason and that true conscience arises from deep meditation and consciousness."Consciousness simply knows what to do, what not to do.There is no question of choice." (27)To the goal of eliminating discrimination in Art. 2 he says, "Everywhere there is discrimination..." against women, the accused and blacks for example. As to the Declaration's so-called guarantees of freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention, exile and freedom to expression and opinion, he cites his own treatment in America and England. In short, Osho shows how the rights written on paper are not guaranteed.Governments violate them all the time unless people are alert, aware and vigilant.Even then, enforcement is lacking. He argues that the only true enforcement arises from inside people, from their consciousness and awareness gained through meditation. The solution to human rights problems is not assertions on a piece of paper but rather the creation of human beings who will respect each other's individuality, freedom and rights. In the second discourse, Osho lays out his own Declaration of Human Rights for the New Man.His vision includes: 1.The right to life (which leads to a discussion of complex issues such as the slaughter during political and religious wars, birth control and death with dignity). 2.The right to love (which leads to a discussion of problems with marriage and nuclear families). 3.The right to leave the body with celebration. 4.The right to one's own search for the truth. 5.The right to an education that includes meditation. 6.The right to freedom in all its dimensions (in cluding freedom to travel and to be oneself). 7.The right to one earth and one humanity, not divided into nations. 8.The right to equal opportunity for the growth of the uniqueness of every individual. 9.The right to a world government which is functional and subservient to people rather than a powerful ruler. 10.The right to meritocracy-type governments. There is so much food for thought here for anyone interested in global political and social issues! It's a great read and bound to generate lots of discussion. ... Read more

Product Description
Hunger, homelessness and preventable disease can no longer be treated as though they were inevitable social ills or solely the product of natural disasters - they are a human rights scandal. Violations of people's economic, social and cultural rights can no longer be ignored. This human rights primer outlines key features of economic, social and cultural rights. It highlights not only the obligations of governments within their own countries but also their international obligations, and the human rights responsibilities of international organizations and corporations. It points to the duties of states under international law to take immediate action to respect, protect and fulfill these rights. Human dignity requires respect for all human rights of all people: there can be no higher priority than the right to live with dignity. ... Read more
