What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Hypertension: The Revolutionary Nutrition and Lifestyle Program to Help Fight High Blood Pressure (What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About...)
I didn't feel like I was reading a typical reference book.It kept my interest and is easy for the average individual without a medical background to understand.Referenced studies are included, which I found especially beneficial as a health professional.Great book I highly recommend to anyone struggling to lower high blood pressure.

5-0 out of 5 stars My blood pressure went down by 20 points
I actually starting using the Dash diet and some of the supplements, not all. In a few days my blood pressure started to go down dramatically. It's amazing how much salt there is in everything. You really have to read labels and of course a lot more fruits and veggies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural". ... Read more

Product Description
It's hard to believe you're dying when you feel fit and fine...but millions of Americans are harboring unaware a condition that can rob them or kill them outright--hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, the most common form of heart disease. Even when hypertension is diagnosed, treatment is usually based on drugs, most with dismal side effects, expensive, and of limited usefulness.

Really effective treatment of hypertension calls for getting at the cause--which, Dr. Eric Braverman has found, often relates to poor diet, elevated cholesterol, excess weight, stress, and biochemical imbalances. With Dr. Braverman's 30- to 90-day program, patients have lowered their blood pressure and, in some case, even reversed the course of existing heart disease.

Based on extensive research and long clinical experience, Dr. Braverman's program can open the way to the longer and better-enjoyed life that high blood pressure and heart disease are silently waiting to steal from us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
As someone who has suffered from hypertension since I was 26 years old, had an adrenalectomy to correct a potassium imbalance that did not correct my hypertension, I am a believer that there must be natural ways to cure disease. This book repeated some of the other schools of though about curing hypertension naturally, but also shared Dr. Braverman's natural supplementation that he uses at his clinic.I took this book to my Internist who is familiar with my struggle to control my hypertension, and I asked her to read the book and come up with a supplementation protocol for me.My doctor reported that she enjoyed the book as it had reminded her of some of the nutrition themes she had learned in medical school. We worked together on a supplementation for my treatment of hypertension.I wish I could afford to go to Dr. Braverman's clinic in New York, but until then I will follow the guidelines on eating, exercise and natural supplementation in this book.I have not yet weaned myself off of hypertension medication, but I have been able to resist adding more medication, which does not make me better, but only more dependent on chemicals to cure disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for heart disease
This is a very good book on how to take care of your heart. Natural way to help improve your heart. Easy to read, lots of good advice. Recomend

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this for everyone
This book gives so much information that is easy to understand and easy to put to use in your life. Even if someone doesn't have heart disease this would still be a healthy way to eat and live your life. The recipes are very tasty and easy to make. Drugs certainly are not the only answer in reducing cholesterol or high blood pressure. This book has helped us in just the first month of using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting!
This is an interesting book, and hard to believe.

It could use more case histories.Surely, they are available. Also, the case histories included do not seem to follow the supplement program recommended. The reasons for such deviations, when not obvious, could be detailed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Drugs are Not the Answer to Heart Disease
What a wonderful idea Dr. Braverman promises - "REVERSE HEART DISEASE, Naturally" with his "30- to 90-Day No-More hypertension and Heart Disease Program" in 198 pages. Who is Eric Braverman? As founder and Director of PATH Medical (the Place for achieving Total Health) in New York City he's "considered one of America's most innovative physicians" according to his publisher Basic Health.

Updating his 1996 research by adding daughter Dasha Braverman's RAINBOW DIET (choosing the right fresh colorful fruits and vegetables) the results to be expected are a "Drug-free, robust life" in one year.

So you ask - How can you do it? Well, Braverman says you can:

Lower blood pressure to 120/80 - 135/85.
Triglycerides and cholesterol to below 200 and increase HDL to above 50.
Discontinue all beta-and alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors.

Just replace with his Special Formula's number 1 to 14.

Then, Reduce Stress with Cranial Electric Stimulation (CES) by sending gentle electrical signals to the vagus nerve in your brain with his RELAX-MATE, a TENS - a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation unit, for 15-60 minutes a day to release GABA and acetylcholine in your brain because it's biofeedback like training for self control and peace of mind.

All that can help you to "break addictive food habits and destructive behaviors". Dr. Braverman defines depression "as anger turned inward" and suggests emotions "contribute to blockages in the large vessels supplying blood to the brain." New science that`s easy to follow and easy to use.

With this book anyone ought to be able to "Reverse Heart Disease -Naturally!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Bloodpressure info
This was a helpful book to obtain information about High Blood Pressure, causes, and tips to reduce.I was looking for ways to help my husband in his need to lower his blood pressure. He is dragging his feet but now I have information to motivate him.

This book + kindle = WIN

4-0 out of 5 stars Book is informative
This book is good but the only draw back is that there was nothing in there that I didnt know.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3-Step Process to lowering your blood pressure
Let me begin by stating that the amount of knowledge that you already have regarding high blood pressure will greatly affect how much you gain from reading this book.Over half of this book covers very basic information regarding blood pressure; For example, what is blood pressure, what is a normal blood pressure reading, the difference between high blood pressure and hypertension, the co-relation between sodium consumption and blood pressure, etc.If you don't have some or any of the information regarding these topics, then you will surely gain alot of knowledge and will really enjoy reading this book.If you know most or all of these topics already, then you will gain nothing from over half of the book.

Now, the other half of the book centers around concrete examples on how you can lower your blood pressure, using a three step approach. The three-step approach, as you would imagine, is composed of stress management, diet, and exercise.I personally gained a world of knowledge on the stress management section, since I already had alot of the knowledge regarding how diet and exercise affect blood pressure.

Although this review might sound like I didn't like this book, that is not the case.I simply had done alot of research on my own, and found alot of the information that I already knew in this book. However, I did encounter plenty of information that will help me to continue to keep my blood pressure at regular levels. I especially reccommend this book for anyone that has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure, especially as an initial research tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice on Blood Pressure Control

    Product Description
Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension could easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet.* Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.* Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level.

High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year.

Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!
Following this book's simple advice, I achieved a dramatic drop in blood pressure and have stopped taking blood pressure medicine.
The author has his own idea about the cause of, and cure for, primary hypertension. This idea has not entered the medical mainstream. Often a researcher with a theory outside of the medical mainstream is bad thing (think about Peter Duesberg, the virologist who claimsHIV doesn't cause AIDS), but in this case it seems like a very good thing. First, Dr. Moore's hypothesis explains some of the puzzles of hypertension, such as the fact that naturally low blood pressure confers better health than drug-lowered blood pressure. Second - and this is the reason you should read this book - following his dietary advice, I lowered my blood pressure from 150/90 to 110/75 - a drop hypertension "experts" assure us is is impossible without drugs. (I should add that I didn't follow the book's diet but simply used its principles to devise my own approach to eating.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to read and learn about high blood pressure
This book was exactly what I was looking for.
Detailed and simple to read about high blood pressure and how diet can affect your blood pressure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great seller!
I am 100% satisfied with Curts books and I have no complaint about this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Helpful Book
I bought this book quite a while ago and found it truly so helpful with blood pressure.I keep it out on my table and read parts of it daily. When eating out, I try to keep my potassium high and salt to a minimum, but if I do eat a restaurant meal (possibly salty) then my next meal at home is one of the suggested ones in the book such as a fruit plate or baked potato.

So far, I've eaten anything I wanted to and found the plans and hints have helped me keep the blood pressure down quite a lot, but now I'm trying to lose weight...still using the things I've learned in the book.

I've meant to write a good summary or review on this for months, but never feel quite educated enough to write it.This is just a great book - I tell all my friends to read it.

Later, I hope to update this review with report of lost weight along with really really low B/P numbers. Not to over-state, but I believe this is one of the most valuable books out there for people struggling with obesity/borderline blood pressure, on and on. It's not recognized enough. I thank the author so much for writing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book.

Informative, straightforward, no surprises nor bad advice, a worthy start to any walking library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for beginners
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.
All Malkin wants is for people to reap the benefits of exercise, all their lives, and enjoy it at the same time. His program is so hassle-free that you think it's under-acheiving, but it works.
With the facts, and a sense of humor, Dr. Malkin shows that walking is the ultimate win-win exercise, with lasting benefits.
He gives you all the basics you need, plus refined techniques, to integrate walking into your life effortlessly. Not only that, you don't have to do it every day, if you don't want to...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!
Dr. Mort Malkin is one of the nation's leading authorities on aerobic walking. He has developed clinics, programs, seminars across the states. Also, check out his other best seller, "Walking, The Pleasure Exercise."

Malkin's first attempt to persuade you to walk aerobically us by convincing you how good you will look. He will focus on the fundamentals of the whole esthetic picture, your weight, shape, posture, presence and grace, yes, grace; he believes the conveniences of modern civilization have made us into sitters instead of walkers. The computer world alone has us sitting more than ever. As for presence, Dr. Malkin says aerobic walking will bestow a more youthful appearance.

You will learn plenty on the aerobic diet guide for reducing, he informs us on carbs, proteins, fats, water, vitamins, fiber, foods with grains, salad vegetables, green and yellow vegetables, starches, dairy, fruits, etc.,

In the chapter called "How Far, How Fast, How Often", he discusses an 8-week program that is simply increasing your pace from 15 minutes at a gentle pace, every other day to 45 minutes at a very brisk pace every other day. That's all that is in the 8-week program, a doable increase in pace and time.

Included is plenty of info on preventing injuries. This is an excellent book...MzRizz

4-0 out of 5 stars For the motivated or advanced walker
This book was fairly easy to read although it can be technical at times. The book is a good second or third step to walking for fitness but tends to leave out the beginning walker and does little to help motivate the couchpotato. The book does give good advice on the importance of warming up andcooling down.Overall a good book, but not for beginners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally knowing what was wrong and how to fix it
Reading this book was life changing for me.Finally I got an explanation for what happened to me and how I can fix it.In a matter of a couple of months, I went from being a fit size 4 to gaining 35 pounds and a huge belly plus having high blood pressure and high blood sugar for the first time in my life.In my HMO, my doctor simply told me I'm aging, I'm 'not that overweight,' avoid sodium and quit worrying. She would not put me on B P meds or send me to an endocrinologist as I'd requested. This went on for years and eventually I was hospitalized with very high blood pressure. I felt desperate. In reading this book I finally found out why and how I can help myself. And so I am. Already I've lost 18 pounds, changed my diet and started exercising again. My blood pressure has dropped like a stone, muscle mass is revitalizing and so is my energy levels.Skillfully written for the laymen, this book is very absorbable and should be read by all adults.

    Product Description
All animals need salt, but humans are the only animals that add extra salt to their food. The authors of this controversial book argue that the deliberate and often well-camouflaged addition of salt to processed foods has momentous health consequences, comparable to the well-documented risks of smoking tobacco. To equate salt consumption with smoking is a strong statement, but MacGregor and de Wardener provide a compelling and forceful account of complex issues relating to the perceptions of salt in society. The authors separate fact from fantasy and cast light on some of the hidden forces working to manipulate and exploit the consumer. The book presents what amounts to a scientific detective story that unravels with startling clarity the jumble of misinformation that has been concocted by the powerful vested interests of the multi- billion-dollar food industry. Along the way, the authors illuminate the rich history and mythology associated with salt, its symbolism, and its manifold socio-economic influences. The book is filled with an amusing and eclectic selection of historical and contemporary illustrations that lend context to this complex topic. Not only does this book have profound implications for the study of public health, but it also serves as an entertaining and instructive account of a part of our diet that is too easily taken for granted and ignored at our peril. Whether you agree or disagree with the authors, this will be fascinating and enlightening reading for all who are concerned with the mounting prevalence of salt in our diets. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but contains errors and not sufficiently comprehensive
Professor MacGregor is to be applauded for his efforts at informing the public about the hidden salt in foods, especially in convenience foods, and for seeking to bring about a reduction in the levels of salt added to food by manufacturers. He and his co-author have enlarged on these matters and other aspects of salt in this book. Unfortunately two glaring errors render the book less than helpful to those most in danger of or most harmed by salt. No mention is made of obese steroid victims, whose weight gain is caused by sodium and water retention, and who would lose much of their excess weight by curtailing their salt intake. And the book states categorically that HRT does not cause these problems, whereas it is, sadly, many women's experience that HRT does indeed cause severe water retention and weight gain. Like the steroidees, obese HRT victims would also lose excess water/weight by curtailing salt intake. Let us hope that if a revised edition is produced these errors will be corrected and that it will also advise that patients taking steroids or HRT should be warned not to eat salt or foods containing salt while taking their medication.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Important Book
Excuse the cliche, but everyone should read this book. After an interesting historical overview on human consumption of salt, the authors present a clear and compelling argument about the strong link between salt/sodium consumption and disease.I recommend that people interested in this should also read "The Salt Solution", which is perhaps a more accessible, shorter, and simpler book with a similar message. This book is an excellent companion to "The Salt Solution" because it lays out, in a more traditional academic style, the evidence from medical research studies published in reputable journals, the indisputable harmful effects of salt/sodium.

This is the book that you (or anyone skeptical of the salt/disease connection) would want to have if you were not satisfied with the credibility of typical trade books and, instead, wanted to see data, graphs, and careful arguments based on primary source research articles.

Also fascinating is the section on the salt industry and food processing industry response to efforts to educate the public about the dangers of salt consumption. These responses are eerily similar to those the tobacco industry ... perhaps not a surprise, given that many tobacco and food processing companies are owned by the same corporation and presumably employ the same lawyers and public relations teams.Read this book and you will realize that salt/sodium is bad stuff that is hidden in large quantities in many common foods. It could save you from early onset of heart disease, stroke, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and other maladies that you can have some control over if you decide to become more salt-sodium aware. This book is a good start to doing that.

4-0 out of 5 stars It'll change the way you eat
Prior to reading this book, I considered myself to be quite partial to salt in meals; a regular dispenser of the white crystals from the receptacle on the table. I approached the subject as a skeptic, believing that our bodies cause us to partake of the right amount of salt to suit ourneeds.

After reading it, my behaviour changed markedly, and I find (asthe book suggests will happen) that my "need" for salt hasdiminished.

The authors' argument proceeds as follows:

-Humans usedto eat much less salt than they do now, and it is possible to prove arelationship between our larger intake today and the much higher rates ofhigh blood pressure and concomitant diseases. Even today, in less advancedcultures where salt intake is less than 3g per day, high blood pressure isvirtually unknown.

-High blood pressure is a central cause of heartattacks and strokes.

-Our physiological requirement is for only a smallquantity of salt; the rest is "addiction".

-If you have high bloodpressure, reducing your intake of salt modestly to 5g per day can have theeffect of reducing your blood pressure. (Tips for measuring your dailyintake are given)

-Excessive salt intake can also be linked with: fluidretention in women; certain forms of kidney disease; osteoporosis; kidneystones; carcinoma of the stomach; and asthma.

-A link between highblood pressure and salt intake is not a new idea. However, vested interestshave conspired (with commercial food interests acting in much the same wayas tobacco interests have done) to obstruct attempts to use this toencourage a reduction in salt intake.

Various peripheral subjects areexplored in the book. For example, it deals extensively and humorously withthe very central role salt has played in society in the past: a source ofwealth and tax revenue, a symbol of wit, durability, friendship andvirility. The book covers the history of salt extraction, and the evolutionof now firmly established links between high blood pressure and heartdisease and other associated conditions.

The thesis appears to berigorously argued (though as a medical layman I cannot be the judge ofthat). Since it was published, the level of publicity about the dangers ofsalt appears to have increased, with some purveyors of processed foodscommitting to reduce the salt contents of their wares. For this reason, Iwould suggest that the book has stimulated debate on the subject; and thatmust be a good thing. If the links are as direct as is here suggested thismay have prolonged some lives already.

Despite the fact that a wide viewis taken of the subject of salt here: history, significance, healthimplications; this book is not all light reading. It is clearly notintended to be an academic paper for publication in a peer-review journal. However there are some parts which may seem heavy reading and somewhatdifficult to understand at the first encounter for medical neophytes likeme.

In summary: a powerful thesis, an interesting discussion of thesubject, don't take it to the beach with you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The high Blood Pressure Solution: Natural Prevention and Cure with the K Factor
I found this book extremely informative. My blood pressure was high normal to mild and my doctor wanted to put me on a diuretic.I had Dr. Julian Whitaker's book Reversing Hypertension and he mentioned the K factor in his book and Dr. Moore's book on the K factor.I ordered the book, read it cover to cover and immediately began the program.Within two weeks, my blood pressure was down 8-10 points systolic and diastolic.Medical doctors care about the sodium you ingest but never mention increasing the potassium in your diet.Diuretics flush out the sodium AND the potassium.Thank you Dr. Whitaker and Dr. Moore for your enlightening book!

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This author maintains that blood pressure can be lowered naturally by maintaining a potassium to sodium ratio of 4/1 in your diet without using potassium supplements.I didn't believe it... until I tried it.Within a week, I went from 150/100 to 110/68.I can't wait to show to my doctor how well nutrition therapy works!!!

I was given this book by my wife after struggling (unsuccessfully) with a sudden and dangerous rise in my bp. I went from a lifetime of normal readings to stage 4 hypertension (190/160) at age 39. Over the course of the next nine months, I was on a variety of anti-hypertensives -- three different bp meds simultaneously -- at high doses with only limited success and terrible side effects. I read this book and a month or so later, decided to give Dr. Moore's theory a try. I followed the K factor diet for three months and also quit drinking caffeine. My bp's plunged within weeks and after a few months, I was off all but one med and that was reduced to a very low dose. My doctors -- including a nephrologist -- were stunned by the results. I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for people suffering hypertension
I was rushed to a hospital with a blood pressure of 175/110 at the age of 37 yrs. I was given a calcium channel blocker pill which reduced my BP to 140/90. Unfortunately it produces a side effect which I cannot stand. I wasthen given ace inhibitor (Hyzaar) which brought my BP to 120/70 butunfortunately produces a dizziness which was so intolerable I could hardlydrive my car. Lastly the medication was changed to cozaar another aceinhibitor which produces a side effects of dizziness which was moretolerable.Anyway I tried to find a natural solution for my hypertension andfound out that this book gives all the answer which was needed to reverseit. After four weeks of high K factor diet ( serum poassium at 4.9 ) I wasable to half my BP pills at a BP of 110/75 and sometimes to 105/65. My aimnow is to stopped my BP pills intake when it is safe to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid the pills- do it naturally
This book details ways for a person with hypertension to lower their blood pressure using natural methods.Dr. Moore is an M.D. and PhD who has done years of research in this area.He concludes that a low level of potassium(K) is a major casue of hypertension. He gives dietary instructions on howto raise your potassium, and lower your sodium. The book is welldocumented and is very readable. It is an encouraging book for those whohave hypertension, but want to try a treatment more natural than usingprescription medications. I recommend it to my patients.Russell TweetM.D. ... Read more
