The state board of education launched what is expected to be a three-year process of setting graduation standards for Idaho's high schools. A 10-member panel that will include people from outside education as well as educators has targeted five subject areas: language arts and communication; mathematics; science; social studies; and health and wellness. While lawmakers approved a 2.3 percent increase for public education for the 1998 fiscal yearfor a total of $705 millioneducation funding will receive an added shot in the arm from an outside source. The Boise-based J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation announced last spring that it will contribute more than $30 million annually to elementary and secondary education in Idaho, including $775,000 over five years to help draft and implement the graduation standards. The Albertson Foundation is among the 50 wealthiest philanthropies in the nation, with assets of $700 million.
