IDL supplies a number of built-in functions and procedures to perform common operations. These system-supplied functions have been optimized and are faster than writing the equivalent operations in IDL with loops and subscripting. In particular, array operations that are performed on the entire array are faster than the equivalent operations performed in a loop on single elements of an array. A common operation is to find the sum of the elements in an array or subarray. Using the IDL supplied TOTAL function is 10 times faster than summing the elements with a FOR loop.

This book was invaluable to me when I was learning IDL, and even now when I am much more experienced, I still use it. The book shows you how you should write code to get the most out of IDL. It deals with widget interface programming, and demonstrates many grahical display tips. It even shows you how you can produce excellent-quality postscript output, which will save you hours of frustration. The book is packed with well written examples which makes the boook come to life. If you're new to IDL, then you MUST get this book. Even if you're a seasoned veteran of IDL, there's probably still a lot that you could learn from the book.

What I needed was a book that went through the basics first (like a C or Fortran book) and then covered the really practical stuff like plotting, imaging, saving output etc. Liam Gumley has done a great job here in showing the reader how to put IDL to work. I also own Dave Fanning's book, and the two books complement each other nicely. However I'd have to give the edge to Practical IDL Programming for it's clear and straightforward explanation of IDL fundamentals, and for very clear and well explained example programs, many of which I now use every day.
