Extractions: The Country Nigeria is a large country located on the West Coast of Africa. It has a physical size of 923,768,000 square kilometres. Bounded in the west by the Republic of Benin, Cameroon to the east, Gulf of Guinea to the south and Niger and Chad Republics to the north, Nigeria is located entirely in the Tropics. It lies between latitudes 4(3 and 140 North of the Equator and longitudes 3(3 and i4~ East of the Greenwich Meridian. The climatic pattern can be divided into two well defined seasons namely the rainy season (April-October) and the dry season (November - March). Temperatures are higher in the north while the south especially along the coast experience more rainfall. In the north the vegetation is sub-tropical giving way southwards to open parkland, and hilly ranges and low level plateau of the central region complemented by the rain forest of the southern states backed by a long belt of mangrove swamps of the coastline including the Niger Delta. Sandy beaches dominate the over 800 kilometres coastline which is intersected by an intricate network of creeks and rivers making up the Niger Delta. The River Niger, third longest in Africa is the countrys major river. Rising from the Futa Jalon Highlands in Sierra Leone, the river enters the country from the western section and wriggles southwards where it is joined by its major tributary, the River Benue at Lokoja and then flows further southwards to discharge its water into the Atlantic Ocean through the numerous creeks and rivers of the Niger Delta. Graphically the River Niger and River Benue which rises from Cameroon divide the country into three parts namely the north, east and west.
