"Returning to his native Chicago after World War II, Nelson Algren found a city transformed. The white-ethnic urban villages he regarded as his home turf were beginning to break up as the middle class and economic opportunity departed the inner city. The flourishing industry and literature that had once placed prewar Chicago at center stage in American culture were both entering a time of crisis. Black southerners arriving in postwar Chicago found themselves increasingly estranged from the economic and cultural resources of the nation." The result of these changes was a new white literature of urban decline, epitomized by Algren, and a new black literature of migration and inner city life, developed by such writers as Gwendolyn Brooks and Claude Brown. She has taught workshops through Elderhostel, St. Stephen's Shelter, People Living with AIDS and has served as a mentor at Chiron Middle School in Minneapolis. She has received grants from Arts Over AIDS and the Minnesota State Arts Board. She also teaches at Metro State University and teaches teen photography in MCAD's summer program. Pete Border is a physicist at the University of Minnesota. He has taught the freshman physics course since 1993, and has recently become very interested in teaching artists and non-traditional students how to visualize math and science concepts with a computer. PCs allow people to operate visually rather than analytically, which vastly simplifies the art of data analysis. Dr. Border has pioneered a course teaching physics through writing computer games and making animations, and has been involved with the "Visualizing Physics" course in the MCAD BS program. Dr. Border has a Ph.D. in particle physics from the University of Michigan, and a B.S. degree from Princeton. Scott Bowman is an adjunct faculty member and learning specialist at MCAD. A graduate of MCAD's film department, Scott's films have been screened throughout the U.S. at festivals and competitions, including Minnesota's distinguished D.L. Maybery Award Competition in 2000. In addition to teaching at MCAD, Scott also owns and operates AniVid Productions, a video, web, and animation production company who has produced work for clients such as Best Buy, InFisherman, and Minnesota Mutual.

Clients are asked to work a set number of hours for a local non-profit or community-based organization in exchange for wages which are given to the service vendor where the debt is owed. The program is funded through partnerships with local businesses, not-for-profits, and faith communities. Bridges to Work - is an empowerment research demonstration program that will operate for 4 years in Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. Extractions: NEWSPAPER COLLECTION DESCRIPTION Purpose The purpose of the newspaper collection is to support the research and teaching needs of the University faculty and students. The Library especially serves programs in the Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as the general reader for a variety of purposes. History of Collection The collection of Illinois papers was begun circa 1914 but was soon expanded to include major United States and foreign dailies. The size and bulk of holdings required that the Newspaper Room, as it was then called, occupy the major part of the basement of the Main Library Building. In 1939, the first full-time professional assistant was appointed. In that year there were 502 titles shelved in the Newspaper Room of which only 61 were purchased. Beginning in the late 1940s, and especially in the 1950s and 1960s, major efforts were undertaken to replace bound newspaper holdings with microfilm, so that by the 1980s film has become the primary format for retrospective files of newspapers. Estimate of Holdings 73,000 reels of microfilm consisting of 369 general interest domestic titles, 312 general interest foreign titles, and 172 subject-oriented titles; and 8,800 microcards representing 13 titles. In addition, the Newspaper Library has current subscriptions to 515 United States and foreign newspapers and more than 3,000 volumes of reference guides, bibliographies, histories, and newspaper indexes.
