Hi, My name is Joe. I am in fifth grade. I like my school because there are kids like me who are Native Americans. Others kids are the descendents of white settlers, and some are the descendents of slaves. We share the stories of the history of our families so we can understand each other better. I like to go to pow wows with my family. Pow wows are times when I can see other indian friends and share the rituals of our people. I also like to talk with my grandfather. He tells me stories about indians in Michigan a long time ago. The first story I would like to share with you is a legend about food. Remember, at one time there were no grocery stores in Michigan. People had to grow or hunt for everything they ate. Because food is so important, they made up interesting stories about their food.

This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

The ERIC Clearinghouse for Social Studies/Social Science Education (ERIC/ChESS) is one of sixteen subject-oriented clearinghouses that compose the ERIC system. The heart of this system, the ERIC database of education-related literature, contains nearly one million citations with abstracts, drawn from a variety of disciplines. Citations to journal articles, teaching and curriculum guides, bibliographies, research reports, and conference papers are included. The ERIC database is available free in many large public and university libraries and on the Internet. The listings below are drawn from the ERIC database and include both teaching materials and general background information on the topic. The key to obtaining the full text of the materials cited below is the unique ERIC number assigned to each item in the database. Journal articles, denoted by "EJ" numbers (for example, EJ549890) can be copied at most academic libraries, borrowed through interlibrary loan, or purchased from article reprint services such as UnCover, UMI, and ISI. Research reports, conference papers, and other materials besides journal articles are denoted by "ED" numbers (for example, ED398110); paper or microfiche copies of most of these documents can be purchased from the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS), 7420 Fullerton Road, Suite 110, Springfield, VA 22153-2852; (800) 443-3742; (703) 440-1400; <edrs@inet.ed.gov>; <http://edrs.com>; or copied from an ERIC microfiche collection, available at many libraries.
Teacher Education And The Normal School Movement In Indiana paid for his club expenses.23 Such boarding clubs had long been a part of the Indianacollege scene and often in the spring after common schools had ended http://www.connerprairie.org/historyonline/isns.html
Extractions: Teacher Education and the Normal School Movement In Indiana Timothy Crumrin Though many felt that teachers were born, not made, the Midwest was also home to a coterie of progressive educators who believed in teaching pedagogy (the art and science of teaching). This idea led to the growth of "Normal," or teacher education, schools and colleges. In Indiana, the "official" normal school was Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute. ISNS was founded in 1865, but did not open its door until 1870. Other, private normal schools such as Central Indiana Normal School in Ladoga and Central Indiana Normal College in Danville also existed. Normal schools sprouted across the nation between 1870 to 1890. Normal schools rose upon the tide of thought that believed teaching was a "science" which could be taught and learned just as any other science. This was diametrically opposite the view held by many who felt teaching was an inborn faculty or talent, or that no formal teacher training was necessary. Many who esposed this view were precisely those who pushed young, untrained teachers, unprepared for their daunting, into country schoolrooms. Even the Superintendent of Iowa Schools did not think teacher training indispensable to classroom success, but instead pointed to what he considered the four primary characteristics needed to teach: knowledge of subject, uprightness of character, a desire to improve, and common sense. Untrained teachers and their quality (or lack thereof), though, were the major complaint issued against rural schools by the "educational establishment." One Wisconsin school committee claimed that "poor teachers.... are the bane of the rural school." Officials at ISNS saw teacher education as a "logical necessity." These differing views notwithstanding, it is obvious that there was often a wide gulf between the quality of education offered rural students and their city cousins.
