General social science students concentrate on two or more social science areas. Some social science majors take education courses in order to be certified as teachers. Others use the undergraduate general social science program as preparation for graduate study in particular social science fields such as geography or history, or in professional fields such as business administration and law. Many four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's degree programs in general social sciences, a few offer master's degree programs, and most community colleges offer two-year programs that can be transferred to a four-year college or university. General social science programs usually include courses in all or most of the following subjects: Anthropology Criminology Economics Geography History Political Science Psychology Sociology Programs usually also require basic courses in physical education, humanities, mathematics, English composition, science, and business. Indiana University and Ivy Tech State College announced today (Nov. 24) that beginning with the second semester of 1997-98, all IU campuses will accept 10 general education courses from all Ivy Tech sites. According to IU President Myles Brand, prior to this new arrangement, IU required a signed articulation agreement between specific IU and Ivy Tech campuses before course work could be transferred. That policy excluded those Ivy Tech campuses that were not within close proximity to an IU campus. "Now," Brand said, "IU will be able to accept the Ivy Tech course work without the requirement of the articulated agreement." He added, "This agreement comes as good news to all Indiana students who wish to continue their higher education, not to mention the benefits it provides our respective institutions. This cooperative effort between IU and Ivy Tech puts the best interest of students first a primary goal of all institutions of higher learning." Ivy Tech State College President Gerald I. Lamkin echoed Brand's sentiments and said, "Ivy Tech State College thanks Indiana University for this historic agreement and President Brand for his leadership in making it a reality. Students, who now will have greater flexibility in pursuing their higher education objectives, will benefit most from this landmark agreement. However, Ivy Tech believes the agreement also serves the best interests of the two institutions, and will help the state of Indiana realize one of its most critical needs increasing participation in higher education."

Over the last three years, legislative initiatives and administrative programs have been established to address a wide array of reading and literacy issues. The policy areas that have been addressed include: new academic standards for reading, research-based early intervention programs, replenishment of school library printed materials, diagnostic reading assessments, phonics curriculum guidance, evaluation of beginning elementary teachers reading instruction skills, and increased support for adult education programs. With the endorsement of 26 statewide reading and education associations, the Indiana General Assembly supported the Indiana Department of Education's 1997 Reading and Literacy Initiative for a Better Indiana by appropriating $14 million for new grant programs. Specifically, these funds were targeted for the Early Intervention Reading Grant program ($8 million), the School Library Printed Materials grant ($4 million), and adequate funding for the state's adult education programs ($2 million).

After (a) discussions with Arnold Arons and (b) discovering that standard instruction was as ineffective for science as for elementary-education majors, I gradually became involved in a development, dissemination, and research program to improve introductory physics education at the local, state, and national levels.
