Extractions: Go to Press Releases Page Indigenous Representatives Gain Access To OAS Experts Meeting February 23, 1999 Indigenous representatives recently gained unprecedented access to an important meeting of the Organization of American States. Thirty indigenous leaders, lawyers and indigenous rights activists from North, Central and South America secured permission to participate in a meeting of the Committee on Political and Juridical Affairs of the OAS Permanent Council, February 10- 13, 1999. The meeting was initially called for governmental experts only, to review the draft American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples . Indigenous representatives successfully argued that indigenous leaders and indigenous experts also should be permitted to participate in this important human rights activity. This opening of the doors of the OAS was a breakthrough for indigenous peoples and also for civil society representatives from environmental, human rights, and development groups who too have been insisting that the OAS permit regular democratic participation by non-governmental organizations. A plan to establish an OAS civil society accreditation system modeled on the United Nation's non-governmental system is being considered at this time. The precedent just set by indigenous representatives should help advance that process. Regular participation by non-governmental organizations in OAS activities would serve to broaden access of civil society to the multilateral development banks and other international institutions as well, and would be a good example of how all national governments should relate to civil society at home.

After having exchanged and analysed various points of view on the course the Permanent Forum is taking, the participating organisations identified their lack of participation in its progression. However, in response to this reflection we confirmed our resolve to participate in the process of making eligible indigenous representation as South America proposes and from this moment forth we will take an active role in the development of the Permanent Forum's activities.

The expedition collected ethnographic and archaeological artifacts, photographed and measured native peoples, contributed to mapping the headwaters of the Amazon, and participated in establishing the Peruvian border with Ecuador. The expedition began in December 1906 and ended in April 1909. The Harvard Observatory at Arequipa, Peru served as the base for three separate excursions to the interior. Principals William Curtis Farabee, PM Assistant in Somalogy and expedition Field Director, and Dr. Edward Franklin Horr, expedition surgeon, participated through the duration of the expedition. Recent Harvard graduates and ethnologists Louis J. de Milhau and John W. Hastings participated through the end of 1907. The expedition was funded under the patronage of Louis J. de Milhau with contributions from John W. Hastings. The expedition was aided by President Roosevelt and U.S. Secretary Root who provided it with diplomatic letters of support. The Inca Mining Company of Tirapata and the government of Peru provided some expedition transportation.

Indigenous peoples comprise 40% of the population but control most of the terrain of our small Andes coastal Republic of Ecuador. Largely they live in the countryside and are either subsistance farmers or workers in construction or any other work requiring meticulous skills. Especially here in the province of Cañar, indigenous people (native Americans if you will) are prized for their honesty, skills and dedication to detail. In an effort to produce informational websites descriptive of life in the Ecuador Andes, we have produced this webpage about the native indigenous people in our area. 100% of our employees are native Americans with whom we work and interface daily. Without exception, we work solely with native people for a number of moral and just reasons. We interface with them constantly and actually, we are one big family.
