Their vivid stories illustrate how these powerful tools can enhance teaching and learning. The site includes 50+ annotated resources. One of the most important but least understood aspects of using information technology in educational institutions is the human component: the interrelationships among humans who *use* information technology as well as the relationships between humans and the technology (and information systems) medium. Extractions: Bridging the Divide: Using Standards of Technology Integration to Eliminate the Divide When it comes to standards to abide by when integrating technology into any classroom or culture there are many things to consider. Before technology can be used in teaching, the teacher must understand how to use the technology. Students must also be taught how to recognize the difference between the "good stuff" and the "bad stuff". Beyond a cultural application, the technology being used also needs to be understood. This will make it so that teachers and students alike can be prepared to be active citizens in the world of technologically advanced tools that they will find themselves in. By becoming competent in technological areas, Native peoples will be more likely to use and demand more technology, overcoming another part of the Digital Divide. As one teacher expressed in response to the survey, training teachers to be competent with technology is one of the first issues involved in integrating technology into culture and education. (see Survey Studies show that only one third of teachers nation wide feel that they are qualified to integrate technology into their curriculum.

Extractions: More than US$300,000 in classroom technology donated to enhance learning environments San Antonio, TX - June 17, 2002 - The SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada and SMART Technologies Inc. announce their joint donation of more than US$300,000 in interactive classroom technology to support the Intel Teach to the Future program in North America. Intel Teach to the Future is a worldwide program to help teachers integrate technology into instruction and enhance student learning. To date, 500,000 teachers in 25 countries have completed training through this program. Pre-service educators and in-service teachers participating in the Intel Teach to the Future program learn from other teachers how to effectively incorporate technology tools and resources into their lesson plans. Both students and teachers are clearly benefiting from this program. In a 2001 survey of U.S. teachers, conducted nine months after they completed the program, 84 percent reported that using computers improved their instruction and 80 percent found that computer-based lessons enhanced student learning. "SMART chose to participate in the Intel Teach to the Future program because of its reputation and dedication to improving education worldwide," says David Martin, chairman and CEO of SMART Technologies Inc. "The program's goals are in synch with SMART's commitment to enhancing the learning environment for both students and teachers."
